Lots of beautiful cafes and boutiques to enjoy around the area once you eat. The pub itself does not have much room to sit inside and eat - there are 2 spaces : 1 with ice cream the other with more seating. About 50+ varieties of ice cream and espresso so there is something for everyone. If you enjoy walking, then this is a great spot to be as there is a buch of things to see around nassau street and Princeton university itself. The only issue is parking - very limited parking ( try parking a little bit away from the area (i.e. by the housing behind the library) if you are not able to find parking or just wait at your location to allow someone else out before parking. Why does Princeton have all the BEST ice cream spots?! I absolutely LOVE the peanut butter, black cherry, and strawberry ice cream from Halo Pub. Their prices are low and the ice cream tastes like childhood. Lines get long sometimes, but there are plenty of places to sit inside. It literally feels like you got thrown back a couple decades because of the decor (very old ice cream parlor feel). for a pretty tiny area, downtown princeton sure does have a lot of ice cream offerings. halo pub, thomas sweet's, the bent spoon... and multiple fro-you stops too. it's hard to wrong with any of them. if you're looking for creative, artisanal flavors with vegan options and are willing to pay $$ for a small amount of high-quality ice cream- definitely head to bent spoon. on the other hand, if you're looking for some creamy, locally produced, typical ice cream flavors, run to halo pub... but be prepared to wait in a line outside the shop- it's a busy shop in the summer / any time the weather is nice! halo pub is a princeton staple- located behind palmer square on hulfish street, close to the corner of witherspoon. in order to keep quality and freshness a top priority, they source all of their dairy for halo pub and halo ice creams from local dairy farms- this also has the benefit of decreasing the costs. you can get a huuuuge cup or cone for about $2-$3! and though not as creative as some of bent spoon's options (you won't find corn bacon ice cream here!), halo caters to just about any palate- strawberry with chocolate chunks, butter pecan, rocky road, mocha, vanilla bean, amaretto, peanut butter, black cherry, cookie dough, etc etc... you get the point. yes, there's sorbet too. yes, there's soft serve (including non-fat soft serve) also. try the peanut butter. yes, there are sprinkles (no, not jimmies) and other topping options/ yes, there are waffle cones in various sizes, sugar cones, etc. yes, you can get a milkshake. yes, you can sample before committing to a flavor. oh, there's fabulous coffee too. and ice cream cakes and desserts (in the adjacent halo fete... which also has a few tables where you can devour your treats). bonus: they have live music on saturdays during the summer months in the small area just outside the storefront. read more

This rating is based purely on the service of the staff, who were so incredibly rude I thought I was on some kind of hidden-camera practical joke show. I started off in the bakery section where the man in front of me asked for 2 of their ice cream sandwich looking things to which the girl behind the counter said "I...can't...understand... a...word...you're...saying". Typing that doesn't do it justice.Just imagine it being said in the rudest most condescending way possible. Then came my turn. I asked what a tartlette was. She said, "maybe you should look in the tartlette section". I stared blankly. Clearly I hadn't found it on my own and needed assistance. She then looked under the counter and said "oh I guess we're out". Next I went to the ice cream section. Another woman behind the counter asked if she could help me. One of the three best ice cream spots in Princeton, NJ. I have an affinity for Thomas Sweet since I grew up on it but recently I've been more into Halo Pub and The Bent Spoon. Can't go wrong with any flavor. Organic, fresh, and fantastic. As someone who has been here well over 80 times (Quite literally), this is definitely the best ice cream parlor in Princeton. I find myself craving their simplistic flavors over Bent Spoon's overpowering rich taste...but if you're looking for a wow factor, you won't find one here. If there's one thing Princeton does well, it's ice cream. Halo Pub is among my favorites, for several reasons: selection, price, serving size, and quality. Every time I walk in, I'm overwhelmed by the selection of flavors. I usually ask to sample a number of different flavors before committing, and they happily oblige my indecisiveness! When I finally committed yesterday (I went with Strawberry Chocolate Chip because they were out of Strawberry), I got 2 scoops in a cup. 2 scoops really means 4 scoops, which made me want to jump behind the counter and give the server a hug and a high five. read more

A Princeton institution for very good reasons. The ice cream is not in the same league as bent spoon and it's OK, it's much more affordable yet still delicious. You also get a drink and a pastry for less than $5, which makes it (unfortunately) unique in Princeton. The decor is very homey with some funny excerpts from old local newspapers. I stopped by Halo's to try a latte after sampling a bunch of different coffee places in the area. To my delight I found that the quality was up to par with the rest if not better and half the price!!! I paid $2 for a generously sized tall mocha latte. I confess I drink lattes weekly and usually they are at least $4, especially around the Princeton area. My mocha latte was so delicious. Instead of using fake tasting syrup they actually melted dark chocolate and blended it into my latte. Divine! A must stop if you're looking for a great, reasonably priced latte-which are so hard to find. Certainly a gem in the area. read more

As a former employee (a long time ago, like maybe in 98) I couldn't give this place 5 stars even though i wanted to. Why? because i know they still hire degenerics (like i was) to manage this place and often times it's not as clean as it could be, and the napkins arent refilled or the garbage piles up too much, etc. but other than that it gets 5 stars for numerous reasons. 1) it's family owned and the owner despite being a scrooge like character keeps the prices below margin in order to provide a service to the community (don't worry he makes money from Halo Farm in trenton) 2) the ice cream is authentic and good. seriously this is not generic stuff, it is the real deal. 3) seasonally they have egg nog ice cream which is good especially IN a cappucino 4) they have espresso whipped cream which is awesome (and also the source of the stolen nitrous chargers, whoops) 5) milkshakes are the bomb 6) chocolate covered peanuts in choc ice cream with peanut butter ok, just go here. read more

Halo Pub, in my opinion, is better than the neighboring T Sweets, based almost solely on the quality of the ice cream. Now, I'm not gonna knock the wonderful mixed treats that the magical machines at T Sweets create, because those are unique and delicious. But, there is nothing better than a scoop of mocha chip and mint chocolate chip from Halo Pub. This weekly occurrence most certainly helped my 10+ pound weight gain while writing my senior thesis (that and the AMAZING free brownies and cookies at Murray Dodge, aka Heaven On Earth). I could get an ice cream at Halo after dinner and walk around in downtown Princeton everyday for the rest of my life. The whole experience is just so satisfying and relaxing. Halo Pub has a great atmosphere, imagine dark Pub/Bar turned modern/art infused ice cream store. They have tons of flavors, all homemade. Last time I was there I got the Crme de Menthe with chocolate chips on a sugar cone, with chocolate sprinkles. Delish! And it's so nice to get the ice cream to-go and just slowly walk around downtown and window shop, especially on these summer nights. read more

They still use the old-fashioned manual espresso machine (as opposed to the automatic machines in Small World Cafe and the super-automatics of Starbucks)--this makes all the difference. Some of the finest ice cream I've ever had - it melts in your mouth. Prices are just unbelievably low here - I once bought ice cream for three (with toppings!) for less than six dollars. They also have a case of excellent homemade glazed doughnuts, and they serve coffee and espresso. Their cookies-and-cream ice cream is great. Sometimes it can be a bit disorganized when you go into the main room - the ordering line isn't really in a defined space, and the size of the crowd can get pretty big. There are two rooms in here - to the left is Halo Pub proper, where you can order ice cream, coffee and dessert. To the right is Halo Fete, which has really cool pastries made completely out of ice cream and where Halo Pub customers can sit down and eat their ice cream. Halo Pub runs its own dairy in Ewing, so they use locally-produced milk in their ice cream. The Ewing dairy also sells their milk in branded cartons - you can sometimes see Halo Farm cartons behind the counter, which I think is pretty cool. This is the only ice cream shop I know of that has a dedicated dairy to supply it. And it's awesome that they changed their cash-only policy and are now accepting debit and credit cards! The ice cream tastes really natural. My go-to order is the chocolate peanut butter ice cream with hot fudge and Reece's peanut butter cups on top. Prices aren't bad, especially for Princeton.
