My favorite bun is the Egg Donut - it's literally a marinated hard boiled egg inside a bun - SUPER GOOD. Small bakery located inside Mitsuwa. The chocolate donuts are my favorite, they have a different texture than American donuts and they are really delicious. Boston cream donut without the hole and has similar texture as the chocolate donut but it also filled with cream, it is very good too. I have tried other breads and were ok but not as good as the ones I described, but everybody has a different taste so you should try them if desired. Chocolate donuts are sold out pretty fast so you need to go early to get them. read more

This bakery inside Mitsuwa is everything of goodness! I love getting breads here! They have thick and thin Japanese white bread for sale here. Now they offer half bag size too so if you don't want to buy a full loaf, you can buy half. It is pricey but it is so good. I also like their other bread, the darker brown swirl loaves one, I forgot that they're called, but they are more expensive. Their chocolate cream puff is also delicious! Oh my days, this place serves heaven in cups. The matcha soft serve and the coffee milk jelly drink is just *chef's kiss* =) I loved the bitterness of the matcha and the addition of some golden graham cereal pieces at the very bottom, which were super crunchy and added an extra "special touch". I noted that she even asked whether you would like your ice cream in the paper cup or the drink cup that would come with a lid, probably taking into consideration whether you were eating it on the go. I go out of my way to get the matcha soft serve here! I love the mixed flavor and that you can get cereal at the bottom (included in the price!). The cashier usually asks me if I want it but if they don't mention it, make sure you ask! It's like a cinnamon toast crunch type of cereal that adds the best texture to your soft serve. I've only had amazing experiences here. The cashiers are super nice and the line moves quickly if there is one. I'll have to add more treats to my next visit since I see they have some drinks and pastries available too! read more

Located inside Mitsuwa marketplace ! Before I start this review, I just wanna say major props to the staff who have drawn the ikemen and cute anime girls for their menu items. Really a delight to see. I came here on a Thursday morning at around 9:30 AM. No line whatsoever. I got the: 1) Spicy Curry Pan: -Standard curry pan, but with some chili powder and spices sprinkled on the outside. You get a lot of this spice and it gives a little bit of heat, nothing too hot to handle. -Regular curry filling, comes with carrots and potatoes. -A bit oily, but they wrap it in paper and its own wrapper, so it doesn't leak out. 2) Regular Curry Pan: -Similar to what I've described above. If you don't want extra powder getting everywhere or are not a fan of spice, then get this! 3) Coffee Jelly Caramel Milk: -I've never had coffee jelly before and I don't really drink coffee either, but this was really good! -The milk is super sweet and it balances out nicely with the coffee jelly (texture similar to grass jelly). -They give LOTS of coffee jelly in the drink. All the way to the top, so definitely worth it. -Since it's quite sweet, when I got home I kept drinking it, and then added milk, then repeat to get more bang for my buck. This was all around $10. A nice early morning treat. I definitely want to go back to try other bakery items and hopefully their soft serve. read more

It had some custard inside and the outside was nice and dense. The coffee jelly was okay but that might be because I'm not really a coffee person...when you get to the end it's really watered down so maybe just ask for less ice? The way I see it, Japanese bakery always slaps, especially with unique takes on their pastries. Had to try the matcha tiramisu on a cup, I mean no explanation is needed for that unique take. The size was massive, had to eat it two to three times. It was okay, I love the fact that they put it in a cup making it more enjoyable to munch on. Very unique take with each layer expressing different flavor profile, cream, cake, jelly. Yes, jelly. I was hella surprised how they have jelly in a tiramisu. Personally, was alright for me, but if I could make any improvements I would definitely hold back on the cream. Just the cream on top is too much for me, having less cream on top would have made it much better. Not only that the jelly was a pretty interesting take which is nice but not too necessary in my opinion. Overall it is not bad, I think they are putting too much into what should not be a simple yet sophisticated dessert; the saying goes less is more, which I think they should do. But for reals though I heard that you can get cereal here and it wasn't on the menu so could be like a secret menu type of thing. The matcha soft serve here was on the bitter side when it comes to matcha but unlike other matcha soft serves I've had, this one was more concentrated and you can taste the earthy matcha flavors. On top of that, it is also creamier (thiccc-er) than others, which I value in ice cream. The cereal topping I got was similar to a cinnamon toast crunch but without the sugar all over. Together, the dessert as a whole wasn't super sweet but it definitely satisfied my dessert stomach. If you don't have a humongous sweet tooth, I would recommend the soft serve here!! read more

Their normal drink is just coffee jelly milk, so they added coffee jelly to milk tea for me. They asked if I wanted to adjust the sweetness level, so I asked for 25% sweet. Every time I go to Mitsuwa, I always try to make a stop at Hamadaya. My most recent visit about a week ago, I picked up some thickly sliced toast, an donut (red bean donut) and their hot dog bread. Everything was super delicious. I also like that they sell their toast in both full and half loaves. I got a half loaf this time because I just didn't want that much bread and it was the perfect amount. Their an donut has been a favorite of mine for at least the last 10 years. The flavor and quality have stayed consistent throughout the years. Price is a bit steep for their pastries, but you're paying for quality. Oh yeah, their matcha ice cream is delish too - perfect treat on hot summer days! Definitely give this place a shot if you've never tried it before! read more

I had high expectations because of all of the reviews and I felt like I would enjoy it because I don't like overly sweet things. I'm also lactose-intolerant but, honestly, does anyone care? Anyway, this drink was underwhelming. It literally just tasted like someone poured milk into a cup and put some coffee jelly in it. I didn't hate it but I didn't love it either. I ordered croissant toast (boloniya plain) 6 big ones and 1 small one on Saturday for pick up on Monday morning at 10 am. I asked for freshly baked ones because they were for gift. I was told that the freshly baked ones won't be delivered until 1:30 - 2 pm, although sometimes they do come earlier but they can't promise. They guarantee that the toast will still be very good even it's from the day before. So I told the guy if he's able to ask for the fresh toast to be delivered earlier (1pm) to give me a call and I will come to pick up at 1 pm instead of 10 am. I also told him that I live very far from Irvine so I need to schedule my visit properly. He agreed. He took down my name and my phone number. He never called. Which means that I still have to pickup on Monday at 10 am instead and get the day-before toast. So I came on Monday 10 am. I was so shocked when I was told that they only have 4 big toast and 1 small one and not 6 big that I preserved. I was so mad & disappointed! So I drove down to Irvine for nothing! And, I had to cancel giving 2 of the boloniya to my friends! But the worst part is, after I got home and tasted mine, it tasted nothing like what I expected. It is stale, and not fresh at all! Coffee jelly milk tea- milk tea flavor was strong, sweetness is adjustable and jelly is soft and easy to drink through a boba straw. Bavarian creme pastry- slightly crunchy edges, custard layer on top was good but kind of sticky. Would skip this one next time Boston cream donut- soft chocolate layer, incredible not overly sweet but very silky custard center with a donut that is slightly towards cream puff texture. Hamada-ya is a Japanese bakery located inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace in Irvine. It is located at the front of the store near the checkouts. The bakery is so small that you order what you want at the counter here. Some of the baked goods are not even on display, but shown only in pictures. In addition to baked goods, they offer soft serve ice cream in flavors like matcha and vanilla along with Japanese style sandwiches. Tried the curry donut ($2.50) here and was disappointed. First off, they use chicken instead of beef. But the chicken seemed like it was grounded so the taste was indiscernible inside the curry pan. All I could taste was potato and curry. If you want a curry pan, I would recommend going to Cream Pan in Tustin instead. There are plenty of Asian bakeries in Irvine to choose from. Based on my initial experience here, I feel like there are better options if you are looking for Asian style buns and pastries. However, I would consider going to Hamada-ya again for their soft serve matcha ice cream which seems like what many of the recent reviews are about anyway. read more

I have tried pretty much everything from this bakery. The reason that I gave them 4 star is their strawberry shortcake was disappointing. It was most dry strawberry cream cake i have ever eaten. Other than that, soft serve green tea ice cream and coffee jelly are the best. Pastries are not that special but matcha tiramisu cake cup. I hope my honest feedback helps. read more
