Fish review is regarding the Costa Mesa location. On several occasions while I have been sitting in drinking my coffee I've had the opportunity to observe the employees. One of the employees an African-American with a large afro appears to be high on some drug. He moves very slowly his inefficient and how he picks up empty cups rather than putting a group together he does them wanted a time as if he's trying to take up time and not do his job. Absolutely phenomenal! The honey vanilla latte was pure perfection... chef's kiss! Smooth, rich, and not even a hint of bitterness. It was hands down one of the best lattes I've ever had. I also tried the breakfast croissant and a few other goodies, and everything was delicious. I even brought home a bag of their espresso coffee grounds, and the aroma alone smells like heaven. First, for those newer to OC, a little history lesson about Kean. Kean was founded by coffee pioneer Martin Diedrich and his wife Karen. Martin Diedrich is the original founder of Diedrich Coffee, which was sold to Starbucks in 2006, and opening the Tustin location marked a return to the exact site of his very first full-scale Diedrich Coffee coffeehouse. So when you come to Kean, you are coming to a special place that is tied to the history of coffee in The O.C. Needless to say the coffee is roasted in-house and is excellent. I always buy an oatmilk latte here, and the coffee taste is deep and aromatic. Definitely one of the best in Orange County for the pure quality of its coffee. For Orange County, the location has a nice community vibe. Eclectic mix of tables, but there aren't always enough of them, so it always seems packed. Staff are always extremely nice. Appreciating the history, great coffee, and community feel is one thing, but you should know in advance that they do not offer wifi here. That is my only complaint and the only reason this gets a 5 and not a 4 star. I suppose if they want to maintain a certain vibe they don't want people working there, but I would be happy even with a one-hour time limit on wifi usage. read more

I came to Kean Coffee to get some work done since I saw they had a large seating area. However when I arrived most of the tables were taken. I didn't see many outlets. I use my hotspot for internet but another customer was asking me for wifi, in which I recommend they ask the business. The noise level was high with a lot of folks coming here to chat over coffee. I decided on their iced Caffe Borgia ($7) with regular whole milk and a Roasted Veggie Quiche ($8.50) because they were out of the meaty quiche I would have preferred to order. The quiche was okay but pricey for a snack. The iced caffe Borgia comes served in a glass if you dine in. I didn't really like the coffee though. As a coffee lover, it's rare I don't like a coffee spot but I actually tossed most of the drink. Definitely not looking to come back. It doesn't really have the atmosphere I enjoy or products I like to consume. read more

I've come here many times over the years. It's one of my favorite coffee spots in orange county. I stopped by while doing something.church stuff early in the morning on July 4th. Interior is clean and staff was friendly and professional. Restrooms are always clean. Good choices of teas and coffee and also some food options available all day. Plenty of patio seating shared with several other businesses and also parking is available shared with other businesses. However, it is sometimes difficult to find parking if the other businesses are busy. Highly recommend this spot. read more

Nice place to stop and get coffee. They roast beans in house and sell beans as well. Pastries are also enjoyable. I ordered a honey vanilla latte and guava cheese pastry, both good. Service was average. Expect to wait about 10 minutes with average customer volume as they spend more time of curating each drink. 4/5 largely based on coffee as I feel the customer experience can be improved. One piece of feedback is that the menu should be reorganized. There are espresso drinks on several of the menu panels but then one space specifically that is titled espresso drinks which would imply the others don't have espresso. For example, the house specialties are listed on a completely separate panel as the espresso drinks, would've like to order one of those had I known they were offered. Essentially you have to read the whole menu with the way it's currently organized you can't just search for tea or coffee sections or you'll likely miss something Importantly you can't study or work here. They intentionally don't have wifi or outlets available to foster a different customer experience. Many of the clientele were reading or knitting which was pleasant. While I support this, it's not made know to customers by signs or anything - you would have to look on Yelp beforehand to know. In addition, I've been to other Kean branches that offered wifi so unless this is a new policy or the branches are owned independently it's important to make customers aware they can't expect the internet at this location in particular. I was caught off guard and had to leave immediately as I needed wifi at the time which was unfortunate. Seats about 25 inside, patio also available. Bathroom under lock and key. Kean Coffee has been a coffee staple in OC for a couple decades, and in my opinion was one (if not the) of the original craft coffee house that is truly above the rest. They roast their own coffee in house for starters, and have a menu that gives you plenty of options that will satisfy even the pickiest of coffee drinkers. The baristas know their craft, and will be patient and take care of you if you are new to coffee and starting out! Inside the cafe is a dream, you definitely will feel like you are a part of the show as so much happens behind the counter. It isn't too loud for a date or to study, and there is plenty of space for even a solo night out. My go to here will always be the coffee shakes. These are hands down what separates Kean from anything else! I prefer the dark chocolate but honestly I don't know how they perfected this drink. The boba straw is appreciated as the drink is THICK. Give Kean coffee a try, and I promise you this will be on your list of cafes to visit on the regular. read more

My coffee was delicious, I ordered it the way I wanted and they made it following instructions. Enter the dilemma; upon my arrival I was briefly stopped by the barista who questioned my latte order, stating "just so you know, this drink has 7 shots of espresso in it, did you mean to do that?" I did felt like she was talking down to me a bit and or unnecessarily trying to interfere with my coffee intake. This has happened before, but I also used to be a regular and the crew just knew it wasn't a mistake or anything to have a conversation about and let me go on my way. But when you're in a business like this it's not a good practice to question the customer about what they want, especially after the drink was made -- that feels especially wasteful and why even have the option in the app if they'll try to talk you out of it? read more

Outstanding local coffee roaster and cafe. Used to buy my beans from the owner's father when I was an undergrad at UCI in the early 1980s. The father (Carl Ernst) not only designed the actual roasters but also brought up hundreds of pounds of dry, "green" un roasted beans from his own "finca" (plantation) in the Antigua region of Guatemala. By far the best beans I have ever had. Was so happy when I saw a few "branches" of Dietrich Coffee shops pop up in LA (WLA/Sta Mónica and Malibu after my graduation and return to LA. Was so very sad when I had heard of their sale to Gloria Jean(?) and subsequent closure (no more Dietrich Antigua for me..! :( Was so heartened to hear that Martin several years later had opened a shop close to the original location on 17th and made a point to visit on a day trip soon after (and as I do every time I find myself anywhere within the OC). There was one of dad's/CE's roasters and a pretty broad selection of beans from a variety of individual small growers from several "appellations" within Guatemala and several other regions. I make a point of and always look forward to visiting and picking up a cup to enjoy and beans to take home. read more

Saturday Morning, the place was packed and most tables were filled. It gave me Starbucks vibes from about 15-20 years ago. Ordered the almond croissant and grasshopper. Grass hopper was a mint and vanilla combo. This ended up being an odd combination where the mint and vanilla were slight but muted. Overall it was interesting, but it wasn't something I would ordered again. The almond croissant was a run of the mill almond croissant, for 5 bucks you can probably find other options. Overall vibe, possibly visit again when I'm in the area for a regular cup of coffee. read more

The one big problem is that I came in there trying to find a KEAN COFFEE that is served by BAGELS & BREW in Lake Forest (21771 Lake Forest Dr, Ste 100, Lake Forest, CA 92630), but there were these issues: 1. KEAN COFFEE roasts this WHOLESALE ONLY for Bagels & Brew. It is not available for sale to the public. Flavored coffees are not sold to the public at the location. 2. The knowledgeable person did not even know what beans were used in the wholesale coffee. It was not even possible to identify what beans or ground to buy, even if the flavored version was not available. 3. I like SMOOTH and MELLOW light roasted coffees. They are hard to find in the STARBUCKS type era of Burned-to-a-crisp, dark, French Roasts (which I hate). Had to just simply try buying light roast coffees, but I still have not found this yet. Gave up and started buying COFFEE BEAN & TEA LEAF - L.A. Brew LOS FELIZ. It was closer than the Columbia Gesha I bought at Kean. Not a lot of light roasts available for purchase, and they are still very pricey at over $20/pound. None are really smooth and mellow. read more

The only thing I didn't love was the interior--it feels quite old-fashioned, with furniture that looks 30 years old. I understand it's part of their theme, but as an interior designer, it didn't really work for me and made the seating feel a bit uncomfortable. I was browsing new coffee shops, and I was excited to see on the menu there was a manual brew pour over option. I walked in and was embraced with the warm decor and ambiance, and I knew this shop would be a comfortable place to hang out for hours. When I ordered my pour over, I was given the option of 6 different beans to choose from, which you could also order by the pound. I chose the Peru beans since I was intrigued by its mild, soft, and light taste profile. The menu price said MP, and I paid $5.25 total for my cup, which I thought was a very fair price. After waiting for a few minutes, I was able to try the coffee, and it did not disappoint. The coffee and light and went down smoothly. I now knew why it was described as mild and soft. The coffee has a delicate mix of tart with a sweet and slightly bitter aftertaste. These flavors became more pronounced as the coffee cooled, but the coffee still was smooth. I very much enjoyed my cup and would love to try their other beans one day. read more

Stopped by Kean on a bustling Saturday morning and no surprise how busy this place gets. The staff was friendly and attentive and very focused on making sure coffee was made to perfection, I usually get the matcha but I wanted to try the Turkish latte- it was definitely more on the bitter side but still delish either way. They had an array of scones, wish they hadn't run out of the coconut flavor (next time) but we tried the spinach and mushroom quiche and the Raisin Bran muffin which was so incredibly soft and flaky. I loved how spacious it is inside with many seating areas to get cozy on a rainy day like it was this morning. I had never heard of Kean but seeing that I was in the area I wanted to give this place a try. So glad I did and happy to report I will stick with my Matcha next time read more

I grabbed some Colombian coffee and coffee from Nicaragua for my fiancé. He loves coffee so much. Especially Colombian coffee. I wanted some treats and a refreshment. It was hot outside and I was parched. I got an iced tea for the liquids, and a churro croissant. It's called a churrosant technically. But it is two pieces of bread, twisted together, baked and sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon. The bread itself was very dry and or stale. So, that killed it for me. But the cinnamon and sugar flavor on the outside was nice. I just wish the bread was fresh and not so dry. It was so dry; pieces were flaking off when you tried to get a piece. Nice idea, poor execution. Still a good stop for coffee and iced tea! read more
