My daughter and I tried this restaurant on our way home from skiing. We didn't expect much because the older posted reviews under the previous ownership were quite poor. The restaurant was cozy, warm and inviting. I had the BBQ , garlic mashed potatoes and homemade coleslaw and the portions were substantial, the price was reasonable and most importantly, the food was delicious. My daughter had the chicken strips under the kid's menu. She said it was delicious and had 2 meals out of it. She said "Mom if this is the kid's menu portion, what must the adult's portion be?" Our waitress was so attentive and friendly. Everything was perfect. Please try this restaurant for yourself. The menu was extensive for breakfast, lunch and dinner. First time we had been back here since the new owners took over. They have done a fantastic job of remodeling the restaurant and they are in the process of finishing up the cabins which they will rent out. Everything was very clean and fresh looking. However they still kept the nostalgic look of Hams Station which is very cool. We had breakfast here and it was fantastic just the traditional bacon eggs potatoes and toast but everything was fresh and delicious. We will definitely be stopping here more often now that it has the new owners. read more

You cant check your google msp here, but you (and your friend) also cant phone, text, email, facebook, or do anything but eat, drink, and talk. This this the last stop up the mountain before silver lake. Sells a few extra items, toiletries, ice. Owner/operator Tom was more than helpful with direction. Attitude was a refreshing comically cursing and offbeat friendly. Limited menu. We had western burger, chilli burger, and fries. French fries: shoestring and awesome. Hamburger: frozen patties, just edible. Chilli burger: hormel chili Beer : no draft, good selection bottle beers, Gordon Briesch was plentiful. Id recommend sitting at the bar, talk to Tom, get a couple orders of fries and drink bottle beer. Ask Tom about the "Bob's Family Steak and Lobster" special. FYI: you cant get steak or lobster or likely find anyone named Bob here. Bathrooms available to customers, and clean enough to use as a toilet. Stopped by to eat at 6:25, grill still going full of food, hours on the website and Google both say 7 PM closing I asked if I could eat outside or inside. He just said we're closed as patrons went in and out. And then when I asked him "no extra food or quick meal lying around I could purchase?" Traveling with a group of 5 cyclists on a non-profit ride and due to some mechanical failures, we found ourselves a full day behind schedule and without a place to sleep. Thanks to the folks at Ham's station we found ourselves well fed and warm. They let us pitch a tent behind the restaurant and we proceeded to enjoy some of the best chicken pot pie of our lives. Bob, the resident cook, has been at this for 14 odd years and he's perfected his art. Of everything we tried on the menu, we'd recommend it all. Thanks again to the Ham's team. Excellent place with fantastic food and a great vibe. I passed through Ham's Station with a group of 5 cyclists. The hosts were warm and inviting, and the view from the balcony is stunning. Bob, the chef, cooks delicious comfort food, which is great to refuel with at the end of the day. I recommend the pot pie for dinner or breakfast burrito in the morning. The coffee is also great! Loved this 1800s restaurant. The server (the wife of the mom and pop operation) was working so hard, and still paid attention to every one and every little detail, despite being shorthanded and having to help a sudden crowd. We just took our time, and the friendly service, massive portions, and tasty food did not disappoint. I imagine that many of the guests here are just passing through, but this spic n span yet rustic gem should be viewed as a cool little destination worth planning as a stop on the way to Kirkwood or Tahoe. My dad and I just finished a delicious prime rib dinner. The salad was fresh, generous and very pretty. The prime rib was amazing and a huge hunk of meat! With crispy potatoes, yummy corn and superb au jus. Add to that the really nice people and the cutest kid ever helping out! Ended the meal with really yum apple cobbler and left happy and stuffed. This place is a life saver. When your jackass "I'm from the Bay Area so I'm smarter than these mountain people" buddy who cant even board a blue says that 1/8 tank is enough gas to get from South lake to Jackson, bypasses the station at Kirkwood even though we are on fumes and the gauge reads ZERO miles of gas left for 25 miles, Hams Station saves the day. Cooks station is closer, but they have no gas. Hams has gas, chains, snacks etc. and who cares if its 3.50 a gallon, Jackass can pay 5 bucks a gallon for all I care. He's the know it all with the Audi, he can afford it. As a rule of thumb , don't leave Jackson without at least a 1/2 tank of gas. In fact if you have lived in the mountains at all, you dont let your tank fall below 1/2, you never know if when you are going to get stuck and need the gas for heat, fire, etc. read more

We came back from a very long exhausting hike. This was the first food place we saw. We stopped and sat down only to find out that they weren't serving food. We were sad...... but the older gentleman asked if he could get us something to drink...... of course we said YES! He brought us all what we wanted and he told us they were on the house. I love this place, always stopping here on the way to Tahoe or when I'm lost looking for the free campsite on Ellis Road off Hwy 88 which, btw, I did last July. No, I really was lost. The guy running the store said I was about the 5th person that was lost for the day! We came here when we needed camp supplies on the way down the hill from a day trip to Silver Lake to kayak and fish (Bob-not me!). Of course it's a bit pricey, most joints like this are...cool thing is they serve food and ice cold beer from the tap too, one of which I enjoyed thoroughly after a day on the lake. Extremely disappointed BUT the Bloody Mary's are good. Made the effort to give Ham's a try after reading all the positive feedback. The menu was very minimal but the worst offense was cold food. The toast (not really toasted) consisted of barely warm bread with butter smeared on it. The biscuits & gravy, we just flat out did not like, and it was cold, as well. This place is a hidden gem!!! Me and my partner were on our way up to Kirkwood to ski, and I needed some food. We didn't expect much because this place is kinda in the middle of nowhere but we were so shocked when we got in the restaurant. We heard they had reopened and were excited to try it out. The food was very good. We happened to be there when it was busy and it didn't matter. The people are extremely friendly, and were worried about the service. We assured them all was good. I don't usually get the bun when ordering a hamburger, but when I read it was a "homemade buttermilk bun" I had to give it a try... and I was NOT disappointed. Drove up country on a beautiful chilly March day to the new Hand Station. The inside has been cleaned, redone and quite comfy and inviting. A few of the bar stools were needing to be replaced but considering all of the money the new owners have invested in updating, cleaning and remodeling the cabins on the property, additional new barstools are probably "on the list." I Service was prompt and courteous and were were introduced to owners and some of the clientele at the ba We ordered the "Friday's only" prime rib and chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto with mushroom gravy. Everything was cooked to perfection and a salad was substituted for the starch with a smile. I With all that said, the only disappointing part of the meal was even though prime rib was cooked perfectly, medium rare, the meat was tough for prime rib. Hence the 3 star and not a 4. Although they are likely having to keep a close eye on their expenditures, the Rib is their special Friday dish and it should be outstanding. I think it would be a good idea to upgrade the quality of the meat. Definitely plan on returning to Hams Station and enjoy the food and hospitality. I will order the Prime again and they offer a skirt steak I'm looking forward to trying. Lovely people and good food. Give a go and enjoy. read more

I ate and rented a room here back in the late '70's early '80's. It was super sad to see its decline. I was one of the last people to go in and buy a shot and a beer many months ago. Gary and family have renovated and reopened with an attention to preserving the timeless aesthetic. Food/service and drinks are very good and I will once again be stopping here on my trips up to and back from Kirkwood. Sounds like they may even have cabins to rent again by 19/20 ski season! read more

This place has always been an Amador county staple. Stoped today in the way to the hot springs best meal I've had out in a while. Fried pickles are heavenly. Had prime rib sandwich special was wonderful. My boyfriend had a burger that had jalapeño poppers on it. If your going this way do yourself a favor and stop. read more
