A crazy winter storm drove me here a few weeks back. We left the Bay Area early in the morning and despite all indications that hwy-88 was open, we arrived at a closed gate 6 mi outside of Kirkwood. After waiting hours and holding in my morning beverages we finally gave up and turned around. Ham's Station was clearly used to dealing with people who desperately needed to use their facilities, so they happily lent out their bathroom keys but also had a tip jar if you felt so inclined for their graciousness. We decided to take a break from sitting in the car and got some lunch. I love how they offer hamburger patties in 4, 6, or 8 oz to suit your mood, since burgers obviously don't keep well as leftovers. The sweet potato fries were really good, the regular fries were pretty good as well. The portions were large - we were both stuffed and after not skiing and only driving all day we were not even hungry for dinner that night! The service was also fantastic - the staff were friendly, empathetic to the stories of all the skiers and snowboarders who stopped by to eat and drink their feelings. The ski hut ambiance was welcoming and cozy, and they have several fan heaters running to keep everyone toasty. I highly recommend this place as a stopover to or from Kirkwood! read more

Do not stop here if you can avoid it!! Stopped here on Sunday July 21 about 12:15pm. Sat ourselves at a table and were brought menus within a reasonable time. Menu was limited but that's ok in a small place. After just a couple of minutes a gentleman, who appeared to be the owner, came to take our order. I asked for the fish sandwich and was told there was no fish or chicken - limits the menu for someone who can't eat beef :( That's ok, I ordered the grilled ham and cheese, my hubby ordered a burger. Both come with chips or, for an extra charge, fries. We stuck with chips. A few minutes later 2 young men (20-25 years old) came in and seated themselves, just as we did! The owner? told them he would "have to send them down the road and wouldn't be able to serve them". There were 4 of us in the seating area and 2 people at the bar!! A family of 4 came in a few minutes later and were told the same thing, they had 2 young! children. Our food arrived and it was blah!! The burger was served on a hot dog bun!?! This is a business with a sign near the bathrooms that says the bathrooms will be closed if people don't buy items or make a donation! 6 people were turned away during our very brief visit! Stop at Cook's station, which is only 5 minutes away! Cook's Station has a larger than expected menu and the 3 women working there on Friday July 19 seemed happy to see each person who stopped in - no matter how brief or extended their stay! Stopped in to see an old friend today who owns HAMS Station on the way to Reno, found out after 11 months of the county beating on him about his permits we were the first food sale he had prepared in 11 months.....told me he had almost forgot how to run his kitchen.....anyway had a burger and fries, was good to go, sorry he's having so many problems, but being in a 150 year old bar and grill was very cool.... read more

The hospitality was 5 stars. We were looking for something vegetarian so they accommodated us with a meatless mushroom burger that was delicious. The fries were hot and crunchy and the onion rings were delicious. They were shy with the bacon on the bloody Mary's either. read more

My Husband and I LOVE this place. If we are hunting/camping in the area we just eat our meals here and I can catch the 9ers game when on! Tom mostly runs the place on his own with a great gal that helps sometimes. He does all the cooking, waiting, bartending, himself. Occasionally, he will run out of things because c'mon people its not like he can run to Safeway for your non-beef fru-fru needs, and at least he is honest enough to refer you down the road if he's out! (we stay anyway, because he is so like my hubby and a great personality!) If you want a fancy meal with a wine sommelier, or a chain restaurant with overpriced premade crap you can get anywhere, or if you are vegan, vegetarian or otherwise restricted keep going! BUT if you want yummy, home cooking it's here! Bottom line - if you're not a snob and love good old stories and camaraderie stop in, you won't be disappointed. read more

We had to make a quick trip to Tracy, CA today, from our home in Dayton, NV. Stopped here for breakfast. I had a pancake and some fresh fruit which was 2 slices of watermelon. My husband had eggs, hashbrowns and sausage patties. My pancake was very good and huge...filled the whole plate. The sausage patties that came with my husband's breakfast were good (I "stole" a bite). They were big and he was only able to eat one of them. Service was great, friendly waitress. Will be sure to stop again when passing through the area. read more

I live local and would not recommend this place. I waited outside for more than 45 min. with my handicap son. When we got home the cook had burned our burgers black on one side. They also want you to "donate" they call it to use the bathroom. They are on a well and do not pay a monthly bill for water. Plus the bathrooms are locked and you have to get the key from someone. I let them know what happen and they made this big offer, Then never heard from them again. If they do that to locals what do they do to tourists? Pass them by. read more

Would give lower if we could. Very odd, unfriendly staff. Dark, kind of creepy store. Disgusting bathroom that smells like cigarettes and poop, no soap/water, no toilet paper AND they asked for donations for using it. If you are desperate in a snow storm, it's a place to stop. Been needing a good place to stop off at for drinks and or food and with Hams Station now open under new ownership we finally have it. This is the best little cafe/bar with a great atmosphere, friendly staff, cold drinks and awesome food! From breakfast to lunch I can say I have not had a bad meal. With dinner being served On the weekends I can't wait to try that and I can guarantee if it is anything like Breakfast and lunch I will not be disappointed. Finally Hwy 88 has something else awesome to share besides its views and fall colors. read more

Stopped on our way to virginia city to have some food and bloody Mary's, order 6 bloody Mary's 2 not spicy, the lady starts bitching right away how she has to make them different, we ask for a menu in the mean time. She comes and tells us the Bloody Mary mix is gone and can't be found. Do we want something else to drink very rude. Then you hear the man and lady (that work there) argueeing over who was going to cook. WOW we were the only people in there she then walks in and says are you sure you guys want to eat here? Wtf who does that? A couple of friend had got drinks and asked for a Togo cup they got styrofoam cups poured their drinks in it and We got up and left. Less if I could. We drive through 88 a lot but never had time to stop. Today we are sorry we did. We walked in and there was a guy behind the bar and a trailer trash lady sitting at the bar. They both just stared at us so I asked if I just sat anywhere for lunch. The lady said yes. We sat and my husband left to use the restroom so I ordered his coke and an Arnold Palmer for me. The lady, who ended up being our waitress gave me a blank stare. I said lemonade and tea. She shook her head and said no electricity just generator and water. So I ordered a water but they did have coke for husband. He came back and I left to use the restroom. By the time I got back he had changed his order to water and said the crazy waitress was not happy about the change. Even though she had not opened the can yet. I ordered a grilled cheese and fries. Then my husband ordered s grilled cheese but had the nerve to ask for bacon and onions. The crazy bitch then went stupid. Said the cook would be pissed. That they only had a small grill and we needed to understand that this was a 260 year old building. When we got up and left she screamed at us to go back to the city. Can't say if the food was any good. We will never stop here again. They need to leave this place to the wolves or real professionals. If the place was more inviting they might do well. Truly unique & historical, but a bit edgy. Tom & kelly are doing their best to extend an 1862 Sierra Nevada survival stop. If you are looking for a brass & fern bar, fawning to your every need, this is not the place for you! Our group of 7 stopped in today. Tom was crabby with the credit card machine, but after 10 minutes we had Tom laughing and we had a blast! You get what you get but its good enough. Built only 54 years after the gold rush started, Ham's Station exudes the rugged history of this area. A full bar and restaurant in a remote location like is a pleasant surprise. It's a great place to come in for a quick drink when they're putting the chains on your tires. They also sell the bug spray and basics you'll need in the summertime. I've had breakfast here too and it was first rate. The potatoes were not soggy or burnt but cooked to perfection.The slab of ham served was particularly flavorful. The toast too was neither soaked in butter nor simply served with a blob of butter in the middle. It was obvious the cook took pride in his food. The bar decor is an irreverant celebration of living on the edge of civilization. This funky place is a true hidden jewel not to be passed by! read more
