Haven't been here since way before the pandemic and was pleasantly surprised. They had taken out the conveyor belt delivery system that always had some pre-made options (unwanted options kept passing by). The menu now reads like a "regular" sushi bar even though they don't have a glass case of their offerings in front boffins the chefs. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our fresh and well prepared dishes. The quality of fish has always been great. You can tell it is fresh! I can't speak to how their dine in service is, we have always done take-out and have never had an issue. Hana Sushi is one of my favorite places to pick up takeout sushi. They've close down the dining area anyway, it's only takeout at this point. We usually call in our order, drive down & pay. Last night there was a 30 minute wait. Which means they're busy. Good! We ordered the Hamachi roll, lava roll, the spider roll & 1 order of the house salmon nigiri. The sign is faded so it's easy to miss but definitely worth checking out. The hamachi roll comes with spicy ahi inside so it's double the yummy. The spicy ahi donburi could've been spicer in my opinion but it was still great quality, good portion, comes with ocean salad AND tempura crunchies under the spicy ahi layer (surprise!). Great sushi and great value! My fiancé wanted sushi for his birthday dinner, so we got Hana takeout and tailgated at the beach! It was our first time ordering food from Hana so I ordered how I would usually order at any sushi restaurant - three rolls for the two of us. Opened up the to-go boxes and OMG those rolls were huge! We got tamago nigiri, the rainbow roll, futo roll and hamachi roll. All were really good, though maybe the pieces were a bit too big to eat elegantly. Would definitely return! read more

So, it's been a while since FPO and I came to Hana Sushi. This is the same location as before (Yelp shows it as closed but it's not, just renovated ). The renovation was about five months ago and the place looks really spiffy. The good, the taste quality is still there and the service is still terrific even though it's all new faces; the bad, prices went up and the portion sizes got slightly smaller. Ok, first off, wanted some cheap "Americanized" sushi. Knew the other choices from here to Kahala mall all skewed heavily traditionally Japanese without "spicy mayo with crunch" type rolls. We walk in and no one tells us it is seat yourself. Ok, we do. all good. Then all of a sudden two costco plastic bottles were placed in front of us, "Here's your water." then he was gone. Looked at menus, placed them down and the girl finally came and took our order. Simple. one order salmon sashimi, and two rolls. One being the salmon garlic roll. We specifically ordered it NOT to be seared. Also got the lava roll. Lava roll came out first. 6 well cut, but fowl tasting slabs of salmon. Dipped it in a lot of soy to overcome that putrid bad fish taste....then bam, out comes the Lava roll. Ahi poke was placed ontop of a CA roll. Ok, decent. Good Poke, dry CA. roll. Lastly out comes the salmon garlic roll, and it's......COOKED. At this point no one had come to ask how it tasted, or to give us dishes. We used a napkin each as a dish between the plate the sushi came out on and our mouths. We decided not to even say anything or complain. We ate it, neither of us like cooked salmon, but the asparagus inside made it tolerable. Very disappointed and would not recommend. As for ambience, there is none. The place doesn't have decor or anything making the booths nice or noticable. It looked like a space with tables put in and a lot of odds and ends in the kitchen. I eat a lot of sushi and have weekly cravings, so when you know there's a place like Hana Sushi in Hawaii Kai where you can do a takeout and get your sushi fix, quick...you're set. I think it is a new owner now and this place is better than before! The service was amazing! The food was great. I am a big Ikura and salmon fan so I tried their Don bowl and it was yummy! Hana Sushi just completed an interior renovation and the new place looks great. They took out the broken conveyer belt which took up a lot fo space, now they have room for 4 top tables along the window side. The menu also got a renovation, they removed some items and added others. They no longer have ramen, but they added three different styles of udon, they also added an oyster shooter, which was FANTASTIC. Food still tastes just as good, however, last night the sushi chef that made my tekka maki didn't do a good job and rolling the sushi or having a sharp knife. The roll was loose and the sushi was pinched when he cut, because his knife was not sharp enough. Food in general, but when making Japanese food it not only must taste good but it must look good. If it doesn't look good, it loses some taste. This is favorite sushi place of mine, so I'll be back. read more

We've been a repeat customer for many years, however our last visit, the service was horrible. When our order arrived, we had no plates, napkins, only one Shoyu bottle and no ginger / wasabi. When we asked for the ginger and wasabi they only gave us ONE. When asked for all 7 of us, the server said he "could but it would take a LONG time to make all 7", really? We felt he said that because he didn't want to do it. I asked for a 2nd bottle of water and it never arrived. Sad that this business owner has lost a loyal customer. I ordered take-out from Hana Sushi. The person who took my order was polite, though he messed up, so I was grateful that he recited my order. Corrected, no problem. I ordered 3 Philadelphia Rolls (my favorite sushi), 2 Ikura, and 1 Umi. I picked them up, they were ready in ten minutes. First off, I was disappointed when my two orders of ikura came back with four ikuras. I mean, kind of a ripoff. Second, I ordered Umi, not a lethal looking red roll. We live right up the road so this is the closest place for us to get our sushi fix. We've only ordered take out so i can only speak for the food and its decent. This last occasion we ordered the fried squid legs which were super thin and tasted like jerky and didnt come with any kind of sauce. My husband ordered the hamachi kama which he said was OK. We also ordered the sunset and lava rolls (both contain spicy ahi) which were again, just OK. I don't eat too much raw fish but my husband said the quality of the ahi wasnt too good. I also had the ume maki which was basic. Another thing is they don't give enough shoyu packets, we only got 3 for our entire order so make sure to ask for more if you need it. read more

Spicy ahi, scallop mayo, garlic seared ahi, negitoro, the gunkans and nigiri are all decent. Their rolls are hearty and filling. I love Zaru soba but found theirs lacking. The soba came out luke warm and not chilled, same as the dipping sauce. Other than the soba being disappointing I recommend Hana if you're not wanting to leave Hawaii Kai for sushi. There's only 2 sushi establishments in the town of Hawaii Kai. This and Sushi Man. I've gone to Hana Sushi since it first opened. It started out as a small sushi take out place and then it eventually became more of a dine in restaurant. And then they found a much more bigger establishment in the same town. I enjoy their food. The owner is nice and friendly. I haven't been disappointed. I won't lie but it can be pricey but it's the value and quality of the food they receive. It's worth it. We've been loyal customers of Hana Sushi for years so I'm extremely disappointed by the service we received this evening. The customer service has always been awesome and the food is great so we have ordered from Hana Sushi quite frequently. Tonight, my husband called in a take out order. When he went to pick it up, he was informed that they didn't have the order in the computer. No apology was offered for this error and he was told they wouldn't be able to fulfill the order as they only had enough sushi rice for those who were those who were seated and had already ordered. Always wanted to try this place and glad we did. My boyfriend and I came here for dinner. The staff was very friendly and attentive. It wasn't too busy so we decided to sit at the booths. We ordered the poke bowls. I had the Kim Chee one & he had the spicy ahi. For an appetizer, we shared tako karrage which was nice and crispy. We were served miso soup that came with our poke bowls. Food was delicious and we didn't wait long. The portions were pretty big and very tasty. The fish just melted in our mouths. In between the rice and the poke was tempura flakes.
