The bento box came with soup and salad. Soup was actually pretty good - I thought they had a generous amoutn of seaweed and tofu and the soup was flavorful - not watered down. The sushi was fresh and presentation was nice. Portions were generous too. I did not taste the chicken teriyaki but it did look yummy and my son did eat it all so it must have been good if not decent!:-) Seems to be a lot of locals frequenting this place. I would come back heere again and try the other bento options as well as a la carte sushi.

The three course menu is double the portion of the seven course menu. You're getting about the same amount of food, If you want variety, go for the seven course menu. That's what we did. You can also opt to wine pairing each course. Our table wanted a combination of cocktails and wine. I asked the sommelier for drink suggestions to bring out the best flavors of the dishes. He suggested a sparkling rose for the first couple of courses and then a red for the remaining course. We ordered the bottle of red for the table. I felt like the drink choices were great enhancements to the dishes. Our first dish was a mini caviar tart, with a mussel in a citrus bath, and a cherry "juice". We loved the cherry juice. It was very unique and felt like it was solely made from cherries. It didn't have a lot of extra sugar in it. The caviar tart was nice and light. It was a one bit dish. The mussel was good too, but I felt like the pickled veggies were fighting against the citrus. Our second dish was an early girl tomato and ahi salad. This was a great dish with fresh flavors. The third dish was a saffron pasta with fava beans. I'm not usually a fan of saffron, but I couldn't even taste it in this dish. I liked the addition of fava beans. That was a nice twist. The next courses were the trout and duck. I liked the light feel of the trout and the delicate flavors. The mint was a nice touch. The duck was equally great. It wasn't too gamey and I liked the jus that accompanied the dish. We swapped out the planned stone fruit dessert for the chocolate and coffee dessert. I can see how the stone fruit dessert would have complimented the light feel of the whole menu. I kind of wish I would have had the menu as the chef intended it, but I love coffee and couldn't resist the other dessert. It was definitely a heavy dessert. It was very rich with great flavors. Lots of seafood, rich and flavorful without becoming too heavy. Add the ocean view and I'm already happy. The gumbo surprised me too. The flavor reminded me of the Gulf Coast / Houston-style gumbo I've had in Texas - not something I expected to find in Half Moon Bay, and very good. Fried calamari was done right: thin coating, thick pieces of squid, tender inside and not over-fried. The pesto gnocchi was also excellent. The seafood paella was more mixed for me. The seafood itself was extremely fresh, but the rice was a little mushy and stuck together. For paella, I really want the grains to stay separate and distinct. Great raw materials; rice process needs optimization. :) And somehow I forgot to photograph the lobster roll. I've had it before and yes, the price has gone up, but at least they didn't solve inflation with shrinkflation. Still a LOT of lobster meat, and the buttery roll hasn't mysteriously become half-size either. Respect. Now the sourdough... Sorry, but QC has to say something. Moreover, the manager came back and handed me my receipt and credit card - still he did not say anything, but just placed it down on the table. I have never met a manager in my life who was taciturn, withdrawn and disconnected. It would be in his best interest to connect, communicate, stay consistent and problem solve when a customer has an issue. I limit my time in restaurants that does not provide a positive experience. I will not be returning to this business, simply for the reasons stated above, all need improvements. My dog did not even eat the steak and she loves steaks!
