We were looking for a bite to eat, and most of the restaurants in the area were already closed (heads up tourists, this happens around 8-8:30pm Monday-Thursday) when we stumbled upon this absolute gem!! The service was impeccable. The food amazing!! I highly recommend the Fuji Yama roll. It was outstanding, if you love Unagi!! The Kobe beef roll was amazing. Miso soup was on the sweeter side, which I thought was unique. Mochi ice cream was also cutely decorated with whipped cream and chocolate sauce! Solid sushi plus skewers with an excellent yellowtail collar. We also enjoyed the Midnight Oysters (garnished with egg and uni), Maverick Roll, beef tataki and Kobe beef roll. Stayed for the weekend in HMB and chose Hangetsu based on the options for nigiri and sashimi. It was a fantastic experience sitting at the sushi bar, the chef was attentive and knowledgeable. We got almost all of the chef special nigiri options and the standouts were Black cod, toro, and the chu toro. Very fresh fish and amazing flavors. The two servers were attentive to the whole busy dining room, busing their own tables and caring for takeout orders. The rolls were super tasty and the fish to rice ratio was decent. We ordered the lion king roll, caterpillar roll, Kobe beef roll, and the Hamachi carpaccio. We got our food within 10 minutes, super quick on a weekday evening! Simple decor with lots of windows to watch the hwy traffic. This is my girlfriend's and my second time going to this place. The restaurant decor feels traditional and clean. The service is excellent. We ordered a bit of everything: cold tofu, pork ramen, Lion King roll, and even some chef special sushi. All of the food is good but it's the chef specials that really stand out. My review: Rolls and hand rolls were tiny, a little overpriced for the size. The crunchy lobster roll had spicy mayo even though nowhere on the description did it say it's spicy. We don't eat spicy . The ikura tasted weird. We ordered about the same amount we normally order, at other places, and can't say we left satisfied. We could of easily eaten another 2 rolls but with the service so slow, (it was busy, so not complaining about the wait time) and it getting late, we didn't have time to wait, as everything took forever to come out. Son's review: I ordered a California HAND roll, but instead I got it in the form of a normal roll. Tried something new, the crunchy lobster roll. I dipped it in soy sauce and it slipped right out of my chopsticks and splashed in the soy sauce and made a mess. Then I took a bite and my mouth was on fire . The menu never said anything about spicy mayo. I went to the bathroom and yup you guessed it, the bathroom was haunted. The lights are always on as we've driven by countless times. On a whim we had a Valentine's dinner and sat at the bar. The atmosphere was nice and rather relaxed, staff was friendly and attentive and the food was delicious! We also ordered the Wagyu Nigiri which is topped with shaved truffle and we accidentally ate it too fast to photo. Maybe the best bite of the night. I genuinely struggle to understand the high ratings here, and I'm starting to suspect they are for the fried rolls or non-sushi menu items (note, there aren't a ton of high ratings from locals) . Unfortunately, they earned this 1-star rating based on the lack of freshness of the fish. We first tried Hangetsu when it opened a few years ago and were disappointed by the quality of the fish in our rolls, so we avoided it. Fast forward 2 years, I was desperate for sushi & since it was pouring rain and our favorite sushi place in town doesn't deliver, we decided to give Hangetsu another chance via DoorDash. Sadly, the core issue remains: the fish in both rolls we ordered was again, noticeably not fresh as evidenced by the food poisoning the morning after. I hate to give a local restaurant one star, but if a sushi restaurant can't deliver on fresh fish, it fails on the most essential front. read more

I really hope this is not the same food I see highly rated on Yelp. I hope that I just got a different chef, because this was mediocre at best. We ordered teriyaki chicken, the lobster crunch, rainbow roll and the giant. The rice was barely seasoned and lacked any flavor whatsoever. It was rolled in such a way that there was hardly anything inside and rice and seaweed dominated the roll. The rolls were loose and fell apart, and the fish was not fresh and tasted like the fish that Safeway serves with their roll. There was no saving grace because these rolls were so expensive for what you got. I wanted the sashimi but it was so expensive compared to the quality you get elsewhere in the bay. The teriyaki chicken was a good amount, and was decent. It was grilled and had the bottled teriyaki sauce. The agedashi tofu was ok. Though the sauce was waaaay too salty, and you should be able to sip the sauce, not the case here. My favorite was the miso soup though, also salty and I think they added a lot of miso paste and soy sauce. Service and ambiance: nice location off the highway, and it's small enough to be intimate. Back patio has some seating as well. We constantly had to ask for things and no one asked if we needed anything. They don't have regular sized plates so we ate from a tiny tasting plate until I asked for a bigger one. They left us waiting for some time, even if they were cleaning the table next to us. No eye contact was made and it was difficult to get anyone to our table. Without any drinks it was about $80. I won't be visiting again. read more

I've had carryout from Hangetsu before but have never eaten in before. That was a mistake. Eating in, especially in the VIP room, is to be experienced. The room aside, I really enjoyed my meal. I had the miso black cod, which is a favorite and was as good as the best I have had (at Morimoto Philadelphia). The nigiri sushi were all fresh and delicious. I had the mackerel and salmon belly, and my son shared his o toro with me. Finished off with some mochi ice cream. And a Sapporo. What's not to love. See you again next visit! read more
