This place is great for groups! Lots of dishes, large portions, and a fun atmosphere. They had a pretty decently sized drinking menu, two of our group got the seasonal Dokkabier (yuzu something?). Our waiter was initially fine, efficient but not necessarily friendly or anything great, but at the end, when he heard we were celebrating a birthday, he seemed to brighten up and said he would bring over a free beer. Super nice of him and appreciated the service. The restaurant reminded me of the ones in Korea with the lighting and style. There's plenty of large tables and booths for big groups. We ordered, the Kimchi Fried Rice, Seafood Pancake, Garlic and Pepper Fried Chicken (although we wanted the Sweet and Spicy one which they didn't have that day), and Kimchi Jeongol with Ramen. All of the dishes were delicious, with big portions. We definitely over ordered and had a lot to takeaway. At the end of the meal, we asked each other what were the favorite dishes, and everyone seemed to have a hard time picking since it was all good. Would definitely recommend checking this place out! It's always nice to see a Hanshin whenever you're travelling because you know you're guaranteed good food, good drinks and good vibes. I was actually surprised that NorCal had a Hanshin because there isn't a HUGE Korean presence here, but I wasn't complaining. This looks like it's the actual franchise, owned by no other than Paik Jong Won himself. This Hanshin Pocha isn't in the Koreatown area -- it's in Oakland, and to be completely frank -- the location was a little random. I may not know much about the area so I could be wrong, but I just thought it was a little random where the location was. We came here after dinner and wanted some post-dinner drinks and just to chill because who doesn't want alcohol? We came on a Wednesday evening, so the place wasn't too busy -- While the interior was nice, it did slightly lack a pocha feel and felt more like an American sports bar. It looks like they also have patio seating in the back but it wasn't available -- the tables and chairs were all just stacked up. We ordered the jjampong tang and got some sojus to scarff down. We wanted to start with only one bottle but our server insisted on getting two becuase there were five of us. I mean -- we were going to get 2, but we just didn't want our soju to be lukewarm by the time we were ready. Anyways -- drinks are drinks. They taste the same everywhere so I won't comment on that. The jjampong tang was decent. I feel like ATL's jjampong tang was much better... In fact, it tasted a lot like ramyun soup.. Like we could definitely taste the powder in there. We weren't complaining though -- anjoo food is always manifested with MSG so it's not a huge issue, but I was just expecting a little more. Overall -- we had a good time and we were able to get tipsy which was our goal. They open till 2 but the place was relatively empty. Clean Korean pub vibe. Food was great and service was above and beyond. We tried tomato sauce geran-mari, diy rice ball, fried rice, pork bbq with cheese, soy marinated blue crab, and jeon gol (like Korean army stew). Pork BBQ with cheese is is must have. Soy marinated crab was pretty good. Tomato sauce geran-mari was beyond pur expectation good. Fried rice didn't come out as grilling hot as expected and was spicier than we expected (we were expecting crunchy scorched fried rice on the hot stone but ours wasn't that hot as temperature wise) The service was above and beyond. They were very good at giving us water. Our bbq pork and cheese got cold and hard as we had a variety of food on our table to enjoy. I asked if we could get it reheated. They happily reheated for us AND gave us more cheese (I believe they may of overheard us with low spicy tolerance and accommodated us). I strongly recommend this Korean Pocha especially for late evening cravings and social gatherings. read more

Really nicely decorated interior, great lighting and just good vibes in general! Came here for dinner with a couple of friends and we were easily seated as a table for 6. There was a lot of yummy things on the menu but we ultimately got some soups, a chicken and some spicy pork with cheese. The best dish of the day had to be the spicy pork with cheese, it was just the right amount garlic, spice and the cheese was so yummy! Everything else was good but just kind of what you expected it to taste like, nothing too special! We also got a soju cocktail and that was as expected as well. I've gone here a couple times with friends, price is pretty standard for oakland and the food is great, we especially liked the raw marinated crab and will be back for more. Other things we tried were: dumpling w cheese, pork with cheese, tofu soup, egg soup, steamed egg, grilled squid, and seafood pancake. No complaints on the food, everything was yummy. The only thing i can think of is that the steamed egg texture wasn't what we expected, and it tasted just like scrambled eggs, so probably wouldn't get that again. As for service, it could be better, the first time was great but the second time was about 2 hours before closing and the waiter was very curt and seemed like they didn't want us there. There was one other table besides us and the store was empty but there was virtually no service besides once to take our order and once to come back to give us the bill. My fav things are the diy rice (I love making the little balls for everyone), the brisket soft tofu (they use silken tofu and it's pretty other-ingredient and soup heavy for a soon tofu stew but damn it's really tasty), and the crispy pork pancake (it's like thinly sliced pork belly cooked to a perfection and then stuck on top of a dank, rly thin garlic chive pancake - wtf. Mmh...I had high hopes for Pocha after reading Yelper's visits and review, but was sorta disappointed after last night's meal. Firstly, let me just say it's a great gastropub w/ appealing menu options but also kinda limited on variety. Secondly, maybe we just didn't order their specialities like the chicken feet or bbq pork w/ cheese side dip. We ended up ordering a lot of egg dishes like the cheese omelette w/ gravy and steamed egg. Both tasted fine but it was just so-so...granted it was a nice size portion, but kinda unappealing. See pix. We also ordered the boneless chicken w/ fries and the pork stew, along w/ DYI rice balls. Loved the taste of the stew, which was rich and hearty and delicious. But everything else tasted mediocre. We attempted to order their crispy noodle w/ seafood, but it didn't make to our table, they just took it off our bill, prob went to a different table. Staff was nice and checked on us often, while whisking around a handful of other tables. Delivered water and napkins galore...they were happy to oblige. The place is huge w/ very hip and modern vibes. Great place for drinking soju and shooting the sh*t w/ your chingus...perhaps we'll try again during the day. This review is little over due. I was super excited to try however I was very disappointed. As a Korean person I have certain expectations on chain company group restaurants from pak- Jong-won supposed to provide consistent taste so it doesn't ruin their brand which this place wasn't the case. We even notified the front however he was saying everything was served correctly. Food had no flavors and they did not follow the correct instructions because clearly tasted different from LA and Korea - dak bal(chicken bal) chicken. Pork belly cheese fondue was okay probably the best out of their order. Omelet - I asked for no sauce they put the sauce anyways. Whatever I won't be back. I will wait to go to LA location. Definitely disappointed hope they can follow and listen to customers feedback (which I told the Korean manager didn't even ask for any discounts or anything just coming from a true concern he was keep on saying he doesn't know why) Hope they can come out train the staff and make sure keep the good taste like other locations l. read more

Came here on a Saturday night and got seated right away for dinner. Vibe is super chill and it seemed to be a nice hangout spot for people. Started with the DIY Rice Ball, which was fun to make into little ball to eat but you can all just stir it up in the bowl and eat it that way. I liked eating the rice ball with Pork BBQ w/Cheese, which was hot and full of flavor. We also got the Haemul Bokkeum / Seafood Stir-Fry, which had plenty of seafood with some yummy noodles. The last item we tried was the chicken feet and I am not a fan. It was way too spicy... to the point that you couldn't really enjoy it. Also think the portion size is way too big; would have been better if they have a smaller appetizer portion for us to try. Prices are reasonable and service was quick. The fried dumplings with cheese was good, so my son was satisfied. There was something off with our pork. Just not fresh tasting and it left a weird aftertaste. I ordered this dish last time and it was really good. My wife's spicy squid tasted burnt. We tried to eat it but could not, so we sent it back. A waitress comes back and says that they can only give us a 10% discount. The chef tried our food and said that there was nothing wrong with the food. We were really shocked because I've never heard of a restaurant doing this. So I was like so we didn't eat it and we have to pay 90%??? Long story short, after some more back and forth, we didn't want to order anything else, but since they wouldn't just give us a refund, they let us order something else, which was a good compromise. But overall the experience left us not feeling very great about this place and will not return. read more

YUMMM--DELICIOUS. Trust me when I say that this place will get crowded in a few months. So go try it out now before you have to wait in line! I always wanted to try Hanshin Pocha in LA, but never got the chance. So when I saw that this place opened in Oakland, I was so excited. Importantly, it did not disappoint. All of the dishes we tried were so flavorful (all perfect soju pairings). If you are getting the chicken feet or the pork/cheese dish (veryyyy spicy, just the way I like it), highly recommend getting something non-spicy on the side (like the rice balls, any of the egg dishes, etc.). Your tummy (and other parts ;)) will thank you later. The prices were reasonable, the service was great, and the ambiance was on point. No reason for me not to return.
