This is a super solid Chinese restaurant in a bit of a run-down Asian strip mall. The plaza is inside a 99 Ranch plaza with some of the stores unoccupied, so it's got a bit of that depressing vibe. The workers are all Chinese and they allowed me to practice my basic Chinese, it was so much fun. They also offered me a spoon to pick up the roasted peanuts, however I graciously declined and commented that I was not a weak foreigner who was incapable of picking up peanuts with my chop sticks. The food was amazing. It's not exactly a hole in a wall place, but it's definitely not going to win any beauty contests. There are two restrooms for each gender and the upkeeping was prestine. I shoved the Mongolian Beef and most of the Hainan Chicken with 3 bowls of rice into my belly. The Mongolian Beef had a great balance between the meat and veggies. The Hainan Chicken was the chilled variety with the yummy ginger oil. The chicken was well seasoned inside out like a duck and the flavoring wasn't lost in the chilling process. The service was super friendly, expedient and attentive. I wouldn't of expected this quality of food from this plaza or from this storefront. I'm glad I came here on a family's recommendation, it's 20 times better than the stuff sitting in the heat lamp at 99 Ranch :) read more

Not sure what happened to one of our orders earlier today. Everything looked good, except for a couple of dishes. 1. First, the fried chicken didn't look like a normal Chinese fried chicken, and everyone at home (including our guests from overseas) noticed the same. Not only that most part were burned (that you can't really see and tastes a crispy skin), but the meat was so dry. 2. Next was the fried calamari, which seemed to have been cooked on used and dirty oil. I just found myself the most delicious Chinese cuisine in town. I enjoyed their Hainan chicken so much, super moist, smooth, and flavorful. The house special lobster, selected live by the chef and freshly cooked, is incredibly tender with savory flavors. Their deep-fried crispy chicken, perfectly cooked to order with rich flavor inside and out--no dry pieces. The walnut shrimp is generous portions, crispy & tender. The beef fillet is exceptionally soft and flavorful. The interior is very clean, and although the service may need a 10-15 minute wait due to made-to-order cooking, the delicious flavors make it well worth it. Located in a large plaza, ensure you park in the non-20 minute parking spots unless you are getting takeout. Solid 5 stars, can't wait to come back. Early Chinese New Year dinner with the family. They had a special on their lobster, so we ordered it and it was divine. Also had hot and sour soup, black mushrooms (but it came with broccoli which was not mentioned on the menu), seafood clay pot, and chicken with salted fish fried rice. Although the broccoli was not described, it was perfectly cooked and paired well with the black mushrooms. The hot and sour soup was a little spicier than expected but taste was good. The seafood clay pot included fish, squid, shrimp, and tofu. The tofu was silky and the texture of the entire dishes paired well with rice. Speaking of rice, this is my hubby's favorite one and they do a fantastic job here. It's a must order each time we come. read more

Sad to give this update only months after our wonderful visit on my dad's birthday. It seems the quality of Happy Bee has greatly declined. Came with my parents tonight and ordered three dishes (ones we usually get) and all were extremely off. The soup was weirdly sweet, noodles were bland, hainan chicken was off. We voiced our opinions to the waitress (who is related to the owner), and she seemed very shocked and told us everyone thinks the food is good. They have since changed chefs since our February meal but according to her, there have been no complaints (ok lol) she was so bewildered she asked if she could taste our leftovers. We said sure. She tasted our noodles and said mm it's not as flavorful as usually huh? Well, it's better not to eat too salty! And after trying the soup she was like mm I've never had this soup before so I can't say. Such weird behavior lol. Why try our leftovers if you're going to just be defensive. She went on to explain their chef has 20-30 years of experience (irrelevant if they just don't cook well) the whole experience just left a bad taste in our mouths (pun intended). Just take the feedback and apologize - not defend and basically blame us for our taste buds lol. Solidified us never coming here again. I arrived at 11:30am to give them some extra time (since it was Thanksgiving) and unfortunately the lady said that my order was not received. Even though they took my payment. I was not very happy about it and she said that I had to place an order and pay again, and that I should dispute the charge with my credit card company for the original order. Was so happy we visited this place. Even thought they opened last November, this was the first time I've been here. The staff was great and very friendly. Free peanuts while you wait for your food! We got the chicken pan fried crispy noodles and the French beef. Both are amazing. Not too salty and not too greasy. Best if all there's a free tapioca and red bean dessert after your meal. The inside is not too big, but plenty of seats that can accommodate even a large party. Bathroom was clean. Interior was clean. Did I mention the staff members were great and friendly? Tried this restaurant per my best friend's recommendation of Rice on Dish, but the dishes she liked have changed since the restaurant transitioned to Happy Bee Kitchen. I got the house special chicken ($13.95) and orange beef ($14.95) to-go. It was a 15min wait, and the food came out super hot and fresh. I tried both dishes immediately when I got to the car, and it was so hot that it burned my tongue lol. House special chicken was delicious fresh - crispy and saucy. Orange beef was ok. Portions were decent. By the time I got home (20mins later), both dishes were soggy and the chicken seemed a bit overly salty at that point. Some Chinese foods are good or even better the day after, but both of these are best enjoyed fresh. The service here is better than most Chinese establishments; the ladies are super nice. I would come back and dine-in to be able to enjoy the house special chicken fresh, but I would probably go elsewhere to get my Chinese food fix. read more

6/10/23 This was our original plan, to return to Happy Bee but El Rocoto was on the table...until we're told its an hour wait....so eff that!!! LoL My sister called & was told there's no wait at Happy Bee & fortunately it's only 6 minutes away.Saturday night at 7 pm-it was actually packed but my sister got there before us and scored seating for 13 people. Thankfully, my dad is not picky unlike my mom, It's his birthday after all. We were welcomed & the crew recognized that we're returning customers & thanked us for bringing the whole family this time. Our wonderful servers were Kimi & Tony. After we orders, it didn't take too long until the food arrived one after the other. My mom was actually impressed that they were had our food out so quickly We ordered: dry style beef chow, fun, spicy eggplant, fish fillet with vegetables, deep fried tofu, deep fried calamari with spicy salt, green beans w/ garlic sauce, Hainan Chicken French style beef, both steamed & fried rice. The French style beef was savory, soft & tender-it was delicious! As a matter of fact, either we're all hungry or the food was just really good, it got smoked in a matter of minutes! The dishes are a bit on the smaller portion but it was just right for our group, no leftovers except for the rice. Of note, they do run on the salty side so we'll definitely ask to go easy on the seasoning next time. It was late in the day so they ran out of the mini boba pudding for dessert but we were given the usual orange slices to cleanse our palates, sweet & juicy citrus though. I've eaten here twice, and the food is definitely delicious. For two people, the proportions are appropriate. My family dined in here on June 10th and we are a family of 13. Now, with the many dishes we ordered, I think we should have mentioned if they do family-style, meaning the proportions should feed at least 6 ppl appropriately. Because the entrees we received were fairly only to feed 4 ppl. So we ordered at least 8-9 dishes and nothing was left to take home. I've eaten at another Chinese restaurant and serves more food than here. But note, the staff are very welcoming and friendly. Now, you must arrive here before 7pm because their dessert of hot tapioca runs out quick. We missed out on that, but that doesn't take away any stars whatsoever. They give you sliced blood oranges as the refreshing part at the end of your meal. Highlights on what you should try here are;  deep fried tofu with large tofu pieces nice and juicy, deep fried calamari with spicy salt, Hainan Chicken ask for hot and crispy as this may be cooked to room temperature/colder, French style beef- indeed this was very tender and flavorful for the carnivore lovers. Beef Chow Fun dry was also very good with the green onions. Don't forget the Seafood w/ Tofu in Clay pot as it was my favorite. Best with hot steam rice, too! I give them a plus for taking us here at 7PM on a Saturday, no waiting y'all. It was not as expensive as I thought, as we ordered quite a bit. I came here with my parents and their friend (all born and raised Hongkongers). I think this place is one of the few times that I barely heard any complaints about the meal! So great win here! We ordered the Clams in Black Bean Sauce, Salted Fish and Chicken Fried Rice, Dry Beef Chow Fun, Salt and Pepper Pork Chops, and Salted Fish and Eggplant. If you couldn't tell from our dishes, we like our food saltier than most. So needless to say, we felt that it was lacking that extra flavor in the clams, the chow fun, and the pork chops. The salted fish added plenty of flavor to their dish. Even for me, I felt the chow fun needed just a little more. However, it was cooked perfectly, with the taste of wok fire. The pork chops were nice and crispy, and we were actually served good cuts of pork! Other restaurants where I order this dish, usually give me very fatty pieces and sometimes don't taste the freshest. So I really liked this dish here, but the fried garlic and peppers only sprinkled in the middle of the dish could not compensate for the lack of coating missing around the pork pieces. The black bean sauce for the clams was good, but I felt it needed some extra time in the wok. They were nice and huge, so some of the bigger pieces tasted like they were underdone. There was also a bit of sand in the clams, which was rather unpleasant. Both salted fish fried rice and the eggplant tasted more oily than I normally prefer, but the meal was good overall. Most dishes were around the $14-$16 range and served in a generous portion size. They may look like a smaller store on the outside, but it's actually very nice and spacious! They also have an updated interior that was clean and had comfortable seating. They were not stingy with the AC either, so no sweat. Was a guest for a family's christening reception. We basically took over 2/3 of the restaurant for about two hours. Menu was ordered ahead of time so food was quickly served for the entire party without any delay. Waiters were very polite and efficient. There was so many of us who ordered Thai iced tea that they ran out, I was offered a black tea milk on ice and that was also good. Place is a smaller space, seems to have loyal customers because people continued waiting outside while we dined. Food is supposed to be regionally from Canton area, according to the waitress I asked. The honey walnut shrimp was plump and tender with a slight crunch to the outside. Sautéed green beans also stayed crisp tender & very green. Chow fun noodles came with large slices of chicken and isn't something I would usually get at other Chinese restaurants but was a nice change from the usual egg noodles. They served a peppery fish dish that was really quite good, and was called the house specialty. Mapo tofu was made less spicy to be eaten by younger children and it was also quite good. Fried rice was served with shrimp and green peas, small diced carrots and egg - I prefer my fried rice this way, not browned with soy sauce. Peppered tender beef cubes with asparagus was also quite delicious. This is a good spot for lunch or dinner. Very busy parking lot shares space with Lee's sandwiches and Katrina's Mexican restaurant, all located in the same plaza as 99 Ranch supermarket so parking was a little packed. I think a better name might attract the best kind of customers to this restaurant, which serves authentic, home-style comfort food from Southern China. There are so many Chinese restaurants in Cerritos and Artesia that it's hard to stand out, especially if it's located in a busy shopping center, but Happy Bee serves up the real deal. The name implies Westernized Chinese food or Asian Fusion, but the menu offers so much more. The dishes were not too greasy or salty, and not only are they more healthful, they taste better too. We ordered the stirred friend string beans, bamboo shoot and pork, walnut shrimp, the fish fillet and eggplant clay pot, the watercress spinach, and the Hainan chicken (a whole one). All were delicately and masterfully prepared, and the service was top-notch. The staff was able to accommodate a single serving of Hainan chicken by adding two more dishes to it. The hainan chicken is the yellow-skinned chicken that's full of flavor and comes with two sauces, rice, and pickled vegetables. The house special pan fried noodles comes with seafood, meat, and Chinese broccoli with a gravy sauce on top of the crispy noodles. Plenty of sauce too! Hello new restaurant in the 99 plaza! Sam Woo or Cannan have always been our go tos but my recently Elite brother picked this spot. Who am I to get in the way of his promising Yelp career? Lol. - 14.95 Dry style Beef Chow Fun: tons of beef, no char on the noodles which was disappointing but still a good overall dish. Lots of crunchy soybeans for texture; yes!! - $14.95 Braised green beans: a tad oily but lots of tasty meat and chili topping - $30 Whole crispy deep-fried chicken: my Hubs favorite dish. Phenomenal crispiness without being overly dry. 10/10 would recommend!! - $14.95 Chicken chow mein: great flavor, fresh veggies, perfectly cooked noodles Overall flavor profile and freshness of the ingredients are top notch. You get slightly bigger carb portions at Sam Woo but IMO less protein. I spotted Happy Bee Kitchen while waiting for my Dim Sum from Dim Sum Hut which is only two doors down. As we entered, we received a friendly welcome and complimentary peanuts after we were seated. Browsing through the menu, I noticed that no lunch specials were available. We ordered the Honey Walnut Shrimp, Kung Pao Chicken, the Beef fried Rice, and Thai Tea. The food arrived fairly fast looked delicious, and was steaming hot. The Shrimp dish was plentiiful, but I didn't enjoy the taste of the walnuts. The Kung Pao Chicken portion wise was pretty skimpy. It was seasoned well and was enjoyed by my husband. The rice was good, but my suggestion is to not order the beef. It was a bit fatty and a regrettable choice for us. This is our go to Cantonese spot. Used to be "Rice On Dish" - there was some transition but a lot of the popular items are still on the menu. The stand outs are: - house special eggplant (battered, fried and tossed in a yummy peppery sauce) - fish & eggplant claypot (sooo savory and tender with melt in mouth fish, eggplant and tofu - super satisfying) - beef & turnip stew (this gets gelatinous in the fridge so you know it's chock full of nourishing collagen & bone broth! It's fall apart beef tendons seasoned with five spice like flavors) Acceptable when you crave it but not so unique: their hot & sour soup and pan fried noodles. Some of my favorite dishes are: House special fish filet - big chunks of fish lightly breaded with a spicy and salty seasoning, kind of similar to black bean sauce but drier. My favorite dish. New place for authentic cantonese, opened Q4 2022 it seems like. Great service and great food, on par with any other authentic place I'm used to eating around in OC. (I grew up in the Bay Area and am used to eating Cantonese food up there, some 626 dabbling here or there) Hainan - 7/10 - decent and good taste. Skin color looks darker but taste of chicken is fine. Sauce is solid, they give A LOT of quantity of that sauce. There are better. But I'm not disappointed or really complaining about it. It could be like... whiter and way fresher meat? If you know what I mean but I'm thinking most recently of some really nice upscale places in the Bay Area and I don't expect every Hainan to be like that. Eggplant & Fish - 9/10 - Fish on this is SUPERB. GREAT flavor, very flaky inside, cooked very nicely. Can't comment but the eggplant lover I know thought this tastes great, Tofu is good too. Some crispy texture despite the thick sauce and tastes great. Beef - 10/10 - maybe too peppery but flavor is super good. I think it tastes fine, LOTS OF ONION which is amazing so you can eat every bite with it and your rice too. Green Onion Pancake - 6/10 - Looks and tastes homemade... not as crispy throughout, more chewy and the green onion flavor is there but just not exactly the kind that I'm used to. I've eaten home made ones by restaurants and this is one of them that's fine and good since they use lots of green onions in it clearly but ... overall it's missing the flavor that it "should" have since I'm just used to even the ones that're frozen...
