Now something to know about dim sum restaurants in Hawaii, don't expect a quiet meal with a priority in customer service. It's a very loud, rustlin', pretty fun and entertaining environment. You'll see the portable grills and trollies making their ways through the isles of tables with restaurant attendees shouting the names of different dim sum in hopes you'll grab a couple. We ordered a couple of goodies, including some of my favorites like the tripe and black bean spare ribs just to name a few. Not going to lie I was excited to try Happy Days. Maybe because we went after lunch time around 1:30-2pm ish most co-workers were eating lunch. I seen one worker even taking a nap.. lol. Service was definitely slow. We had to wait awhile before ordering and it wasn't good since we were starving. However, the lady was kind. When we wanted to order the dim sum, they told us we had to order two orders of each item. Also, lots of things on the menu was sold out or not available which sucked since we came for the dim sum. This is just a quick comment about the food we had at happy days. First of all it was packed as it is Chinese New Year's. The beef broccoli was excellent. The stuffed duck was very good. Probably my favorite dish. But the Jai was one of the worst I've had. The Jai at the Neighbor restaurant up the street, Duk Kee, was much better. Happy days was mostly Long rice, and very bland. I don't remember it being this bland last year. Just to be fair at Duk kee the jai is slightly sweet for those of you who don't like it sweet you may not like Duk kee. But the one they had an oyster. Not easy to find a Chinese restaurant to like. There are not as many as there used to be. Starting going to happy days for their dim sum and then occasionally for dinner. My husband wanted to eat won ton mein so since we were in town we went here for lunch. I called first because some restaurants are still not open for dine in. But this restaurant was. We walk in and yes they are practicing CDC complance. 6ft social distance on the tables and they still give you menu if you want to order instead if ordering through their dim sum carts. But after you order through their menu they wipe it down with sanitizer. I had their oyster sauce chicken with cake noodle. MY husband had hes won ton mein. My cake noodle was good and plenty full. Service was horrible. Water was not offered when we were first seated. I had to ask for it twice and when we weren't given water, I went to the front where you pay to ask for water. I was a little disappointed that all the new customers after us were given water but we were simply forgotten. Some of the food they offered were cold. We picked the char siu from the rolling clear cart and it was given to us cold. I had to return it. They did give us another hot order of char siu but we were at the end of the meal. No apologies from any of the staff when I addressed the 2 incidents. They did not offer a discount. I would have appreciated some sort of acknowledgement of any of the issues that I addressed. Happy Days never disappoints when you are craving dim sum :) this is one of my fav places in the island to get my dim sum fix. I don't come for the service (the employees aren't exactly super friendly, and you order dim sum from the carts usually), but the food is always delicious. During this COVID-19 madness, I picked up some dim sum to go. I called around 9am, and asked for pickup at 1pm. When I arrived, I was happy to see a huge line of people (all wearing masks ) . However, I was hoping they'd have things organized better, and that I'd be able to pick up my takeout order since I ordered earlier that morning. Nope.. I waited in line for 20 minutes, and employees looked disorganized and scrambling- taking people who are there to put in an order, and those who already put in an order on the phone, at the same time. Well I had my Won Ton Mien in soup. The portion was more than I could finish. A bowl filled with noodles and five won tons. A hefty portion of choy sum and a sliver of char siu.The won tons are filled with pork and a little shrimp. Some places stop putting shrimp in their filling. Side note you pay for the large portion. No small size. My wife ordered the oyster sauce chicken on cake noodles. Needless to say we have lunch for tomorrow. The noodles were crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. A perpetually busy neighborhood chinese restaurant serving Cantonese comfort food. Still using dimsum carts rolling between tables offering a varying amount of dimsum. Noodle dishes are okay, tasting seem missing something with the gravy too wet/watery. Although the tables are cleaned, the updated menus feel greasy. The cashier area is very crowded with one line of people making/waiting for their take out as well as the patrons paying their bills. Perhaps a dedicated cashier handling the payments and a waiting area for others for takeout orders would move the people fsster. My last review was for their lunch time dim sum. This time it's for their dinner menu. We ordered a lot of vegetable dishes and strangely, all of their dishes tasted the same to me. We had a sliced beef dish, steamed bass, tofu with mushrooms, cold ginger chicken, chicken with vegetables.... after a while, the dishes kept coming out and I didn't feel like eating more because everything sort of tasted the same, with different ingredients. We were sitted right away as their lunch rush didn't start yet. Never go to eat when you're starving, you'll order way more then you can eat which is what happened today. Growing up, my parents would take us to dim sum weekly. Back then, I thought it was boring because they ordered the same dishes every time. Over the years, I've grown to appreciate dim sum because it is so much more than just eating. The art of dim sum is actually all about taking your time, having a conversion, sipping tea and sharing lots of different little dishes. I must have passed Happy Day in Kaimuki hundreds of times over the years. This is the first time I've eaten at Happy Day. In fact, the only reason why we met at Happy Day is because my family was getting together and my cousin thought it was the most centrally located restaurant that would work for everyone. Dim sum at Happy Day is decent and the food is solid. They aren't going to win awards for the best tasting dim sum or having unique dishes. However, what they serve is hot, fresh, and tasty. The restaurant is a bit old and worn but our dishes and utensils were clean. Service is spotty. The dim sum carts came around a few times but we did have to hunt them down to get more dishes. An order placed when we first arrived for minute chicken cake noodles, took nearly 45 minutes to arrive at our table! The lack of service was actually comical because my cousin kept getting up to get more utensils, napkins, water, tea, and food throughout our meal. The adjacent table noticed and commented that he should get tips for his service! Parking is in the public lot behind the restaurant. It can get crowded during peak mealtimes and weekends. My classmates and I were starving after an exam and lecture one afternoon, so we took a 15 minute drive to the other side of town, parked in the Kaimuki municipal parking lot, and ended up at one of the round tables here. My friends and I unanimously decided to get together for our luncheon at Happy Days. A few of my friends in the group are pretty much regulars at Happy Days. I'm one of them that got to try the Restaurant for the first time. Parking was pretty easy. The parking lot was pretty full because it was lunch time but we found parking pretty fast. Walking into the restaurant, my first impression was: it needs a clean up and maybe fresh paint? No sooner that we sat down, the dim sum wagons came around. Everything looked good and fresh. So much to choose from. The variety was pretty much the sane as other dim dim restaurants. We did have to try the dim sum. It was good but I wanted more filling in it. I loved the look fun noodles with pork. It was tasty. We did order the house crispy noodles which was delicious and one serving was a lot! The waitresses and waiters were super nice. They were busy because the restaurant was about half full, but they made sure to check on how we were doing and refilled our tea kettle and water glasses. I am not sure what happened to the lunch plate. Rather than I ordering dim sum for Chinese New Years at work, we decided it would be easy to do the lunch plate. I tried to be proactive to call in advance, but it took me three tries over a four hour period to finally be able to place an order, this was the tues before Chinese New Years. For $11.50, the price is pretty cheap. It comes with chow mein, Chinese chicken salad and 5 dim sum (custard tart, char Siu Manapua, pork hash, shrimp and chive gau, and a mochi rice ball). The portion from a previous year was super small. The lettuce in the salad was pretty wilted. The dim sum seemed to be smaller than the dim sum from the dim sum cart. I found a piece of nail (ewwwwww) in the sticky rice chicken - okay, I know a lot of Chinese restaurants here aren't held to the highest sanitation standard but this is GROSS! Congi is pretty much the only decent thing. Service: they were quick to roll the cart over, but no one came over after to refill the tea. We got a set menu and my tip is to take your time with each dish because you'll get super full half way through... i blame the honey cashew shrimp (always bomb). If you don't know what to order, just get the set menu, they usually have the most popular dishes for local and tourists. We ordered four lunch plates and two dinner plates all the same price. My lunch plate was good. The shrimp and chive piece was fishy but everything else was great. I wanted hot mustard with shoyu and they came prepackaged. Well they are definitely on the hot side! Needed more shoyu for my poor nose.
