Judging by the positive ratings, HOPEFULLY they have improved since I first found myself at Happy Veggie. My mom and I check out virtually any vegetarian restaurant that opens in the area, so we were pretty interested in seeing what they had to offer. Unfortunately, it was a pretty dismal experience. This was about a year ago, so they had JUST opened at the time and evidently had a lot of work to be done. The entire place seemed to be operated by an old woman and her son, who was busying himself in a makeshift kitchen upstairs. Steam from the kitchen was billowing at the cieling downstairs, paint was peeling off the walls, but there was nice seating available and little paper flowers on the tables. The woman did not know how to read a word of English or much about american money; my mother and I had to show her how to identify and calculate our order. This was the first indication that maybe things were getting off on a rough foot at their restaurant. Our food took a LONG time, which we occupied talking about yoga and spirituality and food with the owner; she was so grateful for us helping her that she offered me a job! She explained her family's reason for opening happy Veggie, and their philosophy on making good affordable vegetarian food. She really was the sweetest most genuine little old woman, and if anything I'de be glad to sit and just talk to her! The food itself wasn't too bad flavor-wise and had a lot of potential. Their fake meat products sometimes had a questionable texture, and my wraps still had some kind of plastic sandwich bag stuffed in the middle of it. Infact, both times I returned to Happy Veggie, the food was okay, but there were bits of plastic or paper bag hidden inside. Hopefully they have straightened things out in there, because the owners were AMAZINGLY nice, the flavor was good, they just needed to sort out the non-food items ending up in their food... I'm going to rate 2 stars based on my experience and maybe pay them another visit in the future to see how things compare to my previous encounter! read more

Happy Veggie is awesome. I loved this place even before I went vegan last year! My favorite dish is probably the spicy lemongrass chicken, but when I'm not looking for something spicy, I'll go for more basic dishes like green bean chicken and broccoli beef. We also usually end up ordering appetizers - either the refreshing spring rolls or chicken drum sticks. I need to stop ordering my favorites though, so I can try the rest of the menu! Next time: crunchy casaval rolls and Mongolian beef? Their pan fried noodle dish is interesting, and wasn't what I expected. It's a bowl of veggies and sauce, surrounded by triangular pieces of fried rice noodles. The first time I ordered it, I couldn't decide if I loved it or hated it.. but I found myself craving it later and have ordered it several times since! The noodles are unique and definitely tasty, but don't order it expecting traditional pan fried noodles. The vegan pho is good, but a little pricey ($9). If you want a cheap and filling lunch, come between 11-2:30 for the lunch special ($7-8), which comes with an entree, rice, and soup. The service is always super friendly. The only time I had to wait for my take-out order, they gave me free pumpkin soup! :) OH! And definitely save room for dessert. Shortly after becoming vegan at the first of the year, we were recommended to try Happy Veggie out. When we first walked in it was a busy Saturday night but we were warmly greeted at the door. My husband and I sat down and examined the wide variety of delicious vegan options on the menu. I ordered the Curry Soup and the Crispy Veggie Nugget Salad. My husband order the Pho and a side of steamed vegetables. One word for the Curry Soup: Amazing! The Crispy Veggie Nugget Salad is so tasty with the light rice wine vinegar dressing. My husband said that he could eat the Pho everyday. The atmosphere is very warm and friendly and the staff always greets us with a smile. Now it is a tradition to go to Happy Veggie every Saturday night and order our favorite dishes from there. read more

Vegetarian food at its finest!!! The pho is SO good. How can pho be this good if it's meatless??? I don't know what they do but it's great. We were served asparagus soup on the house to start, and we were a little weirded out at first i.e. "uhh asparagus soup?? that sounds kind of... nasty..." but were VERY pleasantly surprised by what we got. I'm not even sure what was in that soup besides asparagus, but it was light, tasty, and very refreshing. Their meatless chicken curry is also really good. Again, I don't know how they do it, but the chicken tasted like chicken, and the curry was well done. If I lived in Torrance I'd come here all the time. Plus it's not all that expensive. I plan on eating my way through the menu. Seriously. It's less than a mile from my house so I can call in the order, walk over, pay, head home, and if a vegetarian hobo doesn't mug me, feast. The owner is super cute and really friendly. She pitched her thanksgiving tofu turkey (tofukey?) meal to me while I was picking up my order and it.. actually sounds pretty good. I'm not technically a vegetarian (I don't eat things with four legs and try to only eat chicken and fish) but if I had more money I would eat from Happy Veggie forever and happily embrace the lifestyle. I got the curry (soy) chicken with brown rice. The soup with it was pumpkin.. seriously tasty.. and then the potstickers. Probably wouldn't get the potstickers again -- I like mine crispy on bottom, but they tasted fine. I sorta wish the curry chicken had more vegetables.. like bell peppers, zucchini etc. More color. It was just a uniform shade of vibrant yellow. The brown rice was surprisingly good - seemed more hearty than just brown rice. The portions aren't oversized but they're generous. Service, interior/atmosphere is great. Food is pretty good for a vegetarian place. I have never understood the need to create fake meat if you are vegetarian, but it is what it is. Can't bring myself to order a 'chicken' or 'beef' and veggie dish here... Husband and i share the pho and banh xeo every time...both are huge portions. We also get the cassava rolls. First time we went here hubs went as far as saying it's the best pho in the area that he's had (we are lacking good Vietnamese cuisine in the south bay). I'm the vietnamese one and i don't really agree - it's just not the real thing; it's delicious but not comparable. The best thing about their pho are the king trumpet mushroom slices - yum. Came here yesterday with my friends and I have to say, i'm a fan. I ordered the pho..which was not too strong and the broth wasn't overpowering like other pho places that have tried to do too much. Smelling it before i dug in it had a fragrant floral appeal to it. All the vegetables are fresh and i even sampled my friends curry which was really good to. It's not your typical pho spot and if you love meat go to little saigon but if you're looking for something hot, light, and delicious for a warm day and your from the beach cities like I am ....Happy Veggie is a must go. I heard about of this place from the locals. I actually wanted to go to pho pch. It was closed.. I had craving for pho as usual so tried their pho:) On their menu, it showed as their speciality dish too. Since it's a vegetarian place, it had black mushrooms, Chinese cabbage, radish, leaks, green onions, carrots, tofu, atsuage tofu, fish cakes and vegetarian meat balls. My wife and I went as a result of the amazingly high reviews for this place on Yelp. The lady working there was certainly friendly. I had "chick'n" with broccoli, which I liked, and my wife had "chick'n" in pineapple sauce. The chicken substitute seems to me to be very similar to "Veat" which is available in supermarkets. The food is all vegan, and it was pretty good. The water is infused with an orange slice, which was surprisingly refreshing. I also had a slice of vegan cheesecake, and this dessert wasn't grainy-tasting like some other vegan desserts I've sometimes had. The prices were a little steeper than I would have thought or expected. For my "chick'n" and broccoli, the cost was $9.95, plus a recent $1 surcharge for "chick'n", plus $2.25 for brown rice, plus $4.50 for my vegan cheesecake, plus tax and tip. For a small veggie place in a strip mall, this seemed higher than I expected. The nice lady did give us a small bowl of squash soup as an amuse bouche, which was a nice touch. Overall, we had a good experience, though I don't think Happy Veggie lives up to the amazingly high reviews in Yelp. read more

Light, tasty vegan vietnamese food with friendly service Our favorite south bay vegan restaurant. What we usually order: Dumplings: beautiful and light Pan-fried noodles - the shrimp looks, feels and tastes like the real thing. I think it is mochi. Clay fish pot - Looks like real fish, tastes like it, and the texture is similar. Pho. It's a delicate broth since it is all veggie, although I wish it were a bit more savory (Although it probably means that they don't add MSG, which is a good thing). I don't like the fake meats that much, but I still order it every time. I also love that they have vegan flan! I think it is tofu pudding. read more

I'm so sad that this place has gotten so bad recently. It used to be one of my favorite places. The food was affordable and yummy, there were a lot of good options and I love going to a place where I can have anything on the menu! But recently the service has been soooooo slow, basically non existent. The last few times I've gone in I've actually had to get up from my table to get service. But now I won't be going back because the last time I went my partner got food poisoning from the veggie curry. They get 2 stars because they have the best faux beef I've ever had, the Mongolian beef dish is bomb and I'm sad I probably won't have it again. read more

Why must I love eating furry little creatures when the vegetarian variety can also satiate my hunger? My name is KC CAT and I am a meat eater... but with places such as the Happy Veggie I may have to rethink my food choices. The Happy Veggie is not much to look at from the outside, but please do not be fooled, it really is a great place. Crunchy Casaval Roll: I was impressed by the freshness of the ingredients. This is what makes the roll as good as it is. I especially loved the fact that I could taste the basil. Very good indeed. "Chicken" Curry: Genius! Using sweet potatoes and yucca in this dish give it such a buttery flavor! Vegetarian Tiramisu: I'm not sure that I've ever used meat in any of my tiramisu, so I guess it's safe to say it's regular tiramisu. I don't think it's fresh made though. It was a bit icy and the server told us there have been times when it comes out very hard from the freezer... :/ I wouldn't mind returning. I can always appreciate vegetarian cuisine. read more

Just when I think I've exhausted all my vegan options, I stumble upon another great find! My husband stopped in to pick up take-out from the Happy Veggie for dinner. I think it's a real test of a restaurant's service when you order take-out from a sit down venue. This nondescript little restaurant blew me away with their outstanding food! We had the spring rolls, yellow curry and the veggie wrap. The portions were so large that we had leftovers for lunch the next day. The ingredients were so fresh and flavorful! I definitely recommend this hidden gem in the South Bay. P.S. To all those people giving low marks to vegan restaurants... Disclaimer: I am not a vegan, I will never be a vegan. That being said, Happy Veggie damn near converted me. Their pho is unreal and I'm still amazed at how a broth can taste so good without any meat. I can't say enough about how hood it is. I also recommend their fried noodles, which weren't quite what I was expecting but the sauce is mind blowing. I could eat anything as long as it was covered in that awesome-sauce. Great vegetarian selection and I was told they could make anything vegan. For my first visit I tried their pho; so good! Loaded with veggies and large pieces of tofu. The broth was delicious and flavorful. The portion was very big and can easily be shared with a friend (or 2 if you grab an appetizer). During my visit, the temp outside was almost 90F and it didn't feel much cooler inside. No A/C, just a large fan at the end of the hallway. No big deal, but good to know if you're someone sensitive to that. Service was nice and I was served quickly. HOWEVER, I do believe there was soy sauce in their peanut sauce, as I've had some celiac issues since eating there 2 hours ago. Thats my own fault, I should have questioned it rather than trusting. Came here with the girlfriend for dinner. Read many good things about this place so we decided to give this place a shot! She wasn't a fan of pho, so she got the Szechwan Chicken and I got the Crispy Veggie Nugget Salad. The Crispy Veggie Nugget was very very good. The nuggets...faux beef nuggets I think...were rather tasty and the salad overall with the dressing was very good. My girlfriend enjoyed her chicken as well, and I tried the chicken and it was very very good! Almost thought it was the real deal. Just a quick tip though. Funny thing is, I'm not even a vegan, but my boyfriend is so we googled some vegan restaurants around the area and the name of this one caught our attention. I was pleasantly surprised! To start, the waiter was extremely observant, attentive, and polite. We were quickly served the Jasmine tea to enjoy while we reviewed the menu. The food was absolutely delicious, full of flavor, generous helpings, organic, and one of the best meals I have had the pleasure of eating in a long time. I myself ordered the eggplant with tofu and basil which was so good I wanted to lick the plate. My mama ordered the Mongolian chicken with brown rice and remarked that it was exquisite and more than enough for two meals. I was taken here by my very smart acupuncturist! He frequents this place often, so you just KNOW it's healthy! We got amazing service, but part of that was because the owner knew the doctor we were with. Either way, they seemed VERY kind, helpful, and focused on service! We got: Vegetable dumplings (Pretty good!) -Rich and thick and yummy Pho (Umm delicious) -Comes with lots of bean sprouts and thai basil Chinese Broccoli Noodles (On the plainer side) Spring Rolls (Yummy!) -Comes with delish peanut sauce! I'm not a vegetarian and I love this place. I love the pan fried noodles and vegetable stir fry. I have had other dishes with the tofu meat and they were all delightful. The owner is always polite and open for conversation. The service is above average. You always get complimentary water and a plentiful portion of whatever you order. Wow, I can't believe I'm only the second person to review Happy Veggie! I went to Happy Veggie for lunch today and had the Broccoli & Soy Beef lunch special for $6.95. I don't know if its customary, but soup was served and it happened to be a great raw zucchini soup that was very satisfying. The water had been flavored with slices of orange which was a nice touch. The Broccoli & Soy Beef was soooooooooo good! It had a black bean sauce that was delicious and included some actual chinese black beans which had that intense flavor that you don't always find in such sauces. The broccoli and carrots were cooked perfectly. The white rice was also really really good. They brought out some red chili sauce which I love and I usually ask for but I didn't have to ask...nice! As Damion M. mentioned, it was hard to believe that wasn't real beef. It was crazy how good it was. This was seriously the best meal I've had in a long time!!!!! Thanks Happy Veggie. I'm not a connoisseur of Vegan restaurants (because I'm an omnivore), but this place is unbelieveable. I do however, think that I am qualified to talk about Asian food and Happy Veggie delivers all the flavor that traditional Asian food is known for. Prior to my meal, I was very apprehensive about eating faux chicken, but I was reassured by my friend, so I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken. One bite and I swore that they overheard our conversation and served me real chicken. I couldn't get it around my head that what I was eating was soy-based and not actually meat. Small place full of goodness. I had the lemon 'chicken'. It was peppery and super tasty. Also the Mongolian 'beef' has jam packed full of flavor. Won ton soup was light and yummy. Every dish had tons of veggies and the brown rice was really good. It was sort of grainy and whole. Definitely not mushy. Worth checking out with vegetarian or even carnivorous friends. Thought it was overrated. Haven't been to many vegetarian places, so I'm just comparing this to other regular pho joints. 1st off the large bowl of pho is $9. How r u gonna charge me that much w/ out the meat? Ya there was a little tofu, mushrooms, and some imitation chicken, but no meat, which didn't come close in quantity to the meat other places put in their pho. If u're gonna take away the meat than make up 4 it w/ the equivalent amount of the imitation stuff. The menu says the large feeds 2, ya right. I could've easily killed 2 bowls. I get a lot more food at Saigon Dish, and especially at Pho Hoa. Saigon Dish charges $6.25 for an XL, and Pho Hoa charges $5.75. Now how does it taste? It tastes a little sour probably b/c of the mushrooms. It has a slight hint of sourness, kinda similar to the sourness in hot & sour soup at a Chinese restaurant. Overall it wasn't bad. Bottom line: If u like pho and u're a vegetarian, u might like the pho here, otherwise, get ur pho at Saigon Dish or Pho Hoa. I was looking for a local place to eat some soup, i was feeling sick and my friend just got out of the hospital and i thought why not go to a place where we can eat healthy, feel good! This place was just what we needed I tried the wonton soup with Bok Chok and Ive never tried it like that and now i love it ! and it was the best. I was slated to join my meat eating friends for dinner last night and was in dire need of a vegan alternative prior to joining them all. Happy Veggie came up as a viable option. I embarked. The place is very small and welcoming. We walked in and there was a heterosexual couple sitting, staring at me and my 2 friends that were with me (they, too, are vegetarian/vegan). The owner welcomed us and sat us immediately. It was nice. She came over and smiled and engaged us. Very delightful. We were given ample time, without pressure, to order. I ordered the Pan Fried Noodle and will only speak of my dish as this is what I had, not my friends' choices. The dish was a large portion, especially for the price. It tasted pretty delicious, but was a bit oily for my taste. Yes it tasted good, but it was just so oily. However, I know plenty of vegans who love their oils. I am not one of those vegans. The veggies were still crunchy and minimally cooked--I did appreciate that as I could still taste the veggies. The place was comfy and inviting. The owner/server was nice and engaging throughout the evening. When I am back in this area, I will certainly eat here again. Good food, great atmosphere. read more

They close before scheduled or advertised time. We went 15 mins before closing time but had to return. 4. They messed up with our order. They served beef item while we didn't order it. We are veggie...my wife vomited (in restroom) knowing she had eaten that item. She didn't eat anything else there. Later they said everything is veg. My bf and I went here since we were looking for some healthy eats in his hood and you can't go wrong with a place called Happy Veggie. We did the dinner special where you can get an appetizer, two entrees, a dessert and tea for about $30. We chose the curry soup which was so savory and awesome, but the faux chicken tasted kinda funny. Of course I'm coming at this from the perspective of a meat eater so that may not mean anything to veggies. For my entree I had the chicken curry since I usually get that when I go to any Thai restaurant. I wanted to compare. This was pretty good but I would have loved it if it were actually spicy. Wasn't spicy at all. But I wasn't too disappointed. Still tasted good. The potatoes were a little bit sweet for some reason though. Oh and the brown rice was oddly sticky but again, no big deal. The thing I loved most was the cheesecake which apparently is made with tofutti, agave and graham cracker crust. It was SO creamy. I wish they actually gave us two slices instead of just the one to split. Boo. We're definitely coming here again. The prices aren't too bad, it's nice and low-key and the food is decent. But again, I'm a meat eater so my standards may be very different from those who eat vegetarian all the time. read more
