June 2024: Price per ounce= 69 cts/oz Happy Yogurt serves your fro-yo and toppings for you, and then you pay by the ounce. I can guess you lose alot of business this way. Some fro-yo fans have alot of fun building their own fro-yo creations. I asked for Mango and Vanilla, 50/50 mix, half full, with Lychee Balls. My fro-yo was very good. Super icy and with a thick texture. Very slight chalky taste, and a little tart. The Mango flavor was good. The Vanilla was rich and creamy. Service/ Value: 69 cents/oz is cheap. I have reviewed 20+ fro-yo places around the SF Bay Area, and the current avg price is 70-79 cts/oz. Plus, it's full service. My half full cup was $8.14. I didn't ask about the tare (cup) weight deduction. Atmosphere/Parking: Decor is old and outdated. Can't go inside to look at toppings up close. Hard to find parking. Cute little yogurt shop with 4 dispensers. Today the flavors were tart, strawberry, cake batter, and salted caramel popcorn. It looks like a family owned business and the owner was very nice. It was quiet because it was a windy typical sf day. Toppings were plentiful, and they had fresh fruit even though that's pretty expensive these days. My favorite toppings were 7 kinds nuts, marshmallow sauce, and cheesecake. They had the usuals like almonds, popping boba and graham cracker crumbs. Not much to write in terms of this place. It seems like it's run by a family and they don't care much about their customers. The lady behind the cash register is not very friendly. When I came in with a friend, we asked to try some samples of the yogurt flavors and she was not having it. There were only 4 flavors to choose from and before we decided what we wanted to get, we wanted to make sure we knew how each of the flavors tasted. Each time she would let us try a different flavor, she would go back to her seat and give us a dirty look... I really didn't like this attitude. Once we decided what yogurt to get, we took our time with toppings and once again the lady seemed irritated. I really felt as if she just wanted to be left alone and our presence was very bothersome to her. In terms of yogurt flavors, they were really quite strange. There wasn't anything really appealing. The toppings, such as the fruits were very fresh and all the dry candies/cereals/nuts were well-kept and organized. Originally I thought that parking was the main issue around this place, but in reality it is the combination of parking and the horrible customer service. Mom and pop fro-yo shop right in the middle of the Outer Richmond! If you live in the area, you know there aren't very many frozen yogurt places around. I've been to happy yogurt maybe 10+ and will continue to go! Ada, who runs the shop, is the sweetest and always lets me sample all the flavors before I commit. There's only 4 flavors at a time and she switches them every week (but always has plain tart present). I like this system better because it forces me to venture out of having a go-to flavor! It's a self-serve froyo and toppings bar. There's tons of options--everything from fresh fruit to your typical candy toppings, AND THERE'S MOCHI (obviously this is my favorite part). For such a small place, this frozen yogurt shop evoked big feelings. Due to COVID, they are take out only and the store employee serves the yogurt to you. There was definitely a language barrier and when I asked to sample the yogurt, I got a large serving of it instead. Luckily, it was the flavor I liked. She gave me all of my desired toppings, however, when I asked for strawberries which are on their topping menu, the store employee groaned on her way to get and slice them. I already wasn't feeling great about the situation and then she put the 2 yogurts that we got on the scale and BAM $17. First of all, if I was serving myself, I would've gotten a fraction of the yogurt. At no point did the store employee ask me how much yogurt or toppings I wanted, which made me fill like she filled up our yogurts to the brim to get the most money. I could've gotten some better tasting and more unique gelato/ice cream/frozen yogurt for half the price somewhere else or at the grocery store. I think that whole concept of self service is that cut the middle man. If you cut the middle man, you'll get cheaper but you may loose communication between people because it's not necessary to have any conversation to anyone! Happy Yogurt is about a 5-7 min walk from my house and I usually come here out of convenience to fill a self serve froyo craving. I wouldn't say they have the best froyo but its decent and the people that work there are fairly nice. There is only one size and its 35 cents an ounce. They also have frequent buyer cards, however you need to at least get 3 dollars worth of froyo and toppings in order to get a sticker. Probably one of the big issues here is space, they don't have much of a selection of flavors. They have: -Original: which to me tastes like they added a bit of lemon in it to make it more tart. meh - Their second flavor they change every 8-10 days So far I they have had: -Cake batter: sweet and not reallie anything special -Boysenberry: which i am sad I missed since I love Boysenberry :( -Bubble Gum: has only a mild taste of bubble gum flavor to it I hear that this Friday it will be changed to either pineapple or Green Tea. I am hoping for GREEN TEA :D. They have a decent selection of toppings which consists of fruits, dry toppings (ie granola, different cereals, different candies) I am wondering how fresh the fruits are since it seems like they put it out in the morning and when they run out, they are out. Some toppings tat are a plus for me is they have mochi!, and they also have rainbow mochi. I am reallie starting to like putting organic granola in my froyo too to make it much healthier. People, this is what entrepreneurship is all about: A cute, tiny little walk-in closet that sells self-serve froyos at 35 cents an ounce. They carry only one froyo machine and two flavors, tart and vanilla with tart being the only fat free item available. After a good swirl of both flavors, my toppings included juicy logans, lychee jello, and powdery mochi ($3.50). I must say, that the tart yogurt is the equivalent of Pinkberry and the idea of having logans as topping is original and worthwhile. My froyo did not melt easily and the overall quality is quite good. Serving is very friendly and down to earth. If I were to judge this place against the big three: Pinkberry, Red Mango, and Yogurtland, this place would likely to earn a paltry two stars. However, judging from the two flavors they carry and the variety of colorful toppings, I believe the entrepreneur spirit of this place has earned them a three star endorsement. To increase its level of success, all they need to do is to keep the tart flavor and then add or rotate with another, like taro or mango, to further the intrigue for the locals in the area. Better yet, they should consider creating other flavors that nobody else has, like red beans or pink guava to the repertoire to gain a competitive edge. Happy Yogurt was one of those places for me where I just had to go back a second time to test out the waters thoroughly. Sometimes, when I enter into certain restaurants/shops, it's hard for me to gauge a good opinion/review the first time around. I'd hate to give a place a low rating if I didn't thoroughly examine everything about it (price, atmosphere, service, etc.). The first time I went to Happy Yogurt was pretty much a flyby moment. It was on that unusually warm weekend; I figured a cup of froyo would be nice on my walk to Walgreen's. Even though I had read lukewarm/less-than-stellar reviews from Nobu K. and Lolia S., I decided I would test out Happy Yogurt for myself. Yesterday, I went back again, despite the gloomy fog in the air. The first time I went, there wasn't anybody present, not even the cashier. When the cashier did come out of the hiding area, he wasn't too friendly towards me when I tried to make conversation. Minus one point on that aspect. However, yesterday, I was greeted with a friendlier cashier, and she at least made conversation with me and helped me with the clumsy covers for the toppings. Plus one point for that. Service, therefore, is uneven; I know it's a self-serve place, but the least the cashiers could do is be a little friendlier and helpful. The decor is cutesy, like all the other froyo places; I like how clean Happy Yogurt is (see my review update on Icebee), but I'm wondering if it's so clean because it's not really frequented as much by others as, say, the more central froyo shops. Still, it seems like a place that's meant to cater to a younger crowd, perhaps the local high school and elementary school. The directions on the wall are a little redundant (I would assume most people know how to get their own froyo), but it's helpful nonetheless. For a self-serve place, Happy Yogurt only offers two flavors. I'm not sure if they switch up the flavors, but both times I went, they only had plain tart and nonfat chocolate. Since I still have an unfortunate aversion to chocolate, I went for the plain tart both times. The machine works very quickly, so be careful not to let the froyo cup runneth over. Now, about the toppings buffet: there's no need to have both the germ guard/shield AND individual covers for the toppings. Have one or the other, not both. Their germ guard "window" (I'm still not sure how to call them) is placed low enough to where, if someone coughs, the germs won't go directly onto the toppings. However, with the germ guard AND the covers over each toppings...well, I felt clumsy with the covers, and it wasted a bit of time just trying to take off each cover and then putting it back on. At least the cashier helped with the cover the second time I went, but the first time, the guy just watched me be clumsy with the covers. Hmm. As for the actual froyo and toppings: the tart flavor is okay, not as great as other locations, but not completely horrible in my opinion. It was firmer than Icebee's, but still seemed to melt a little quickly, even on a gloomy mild day like yesterday. The fruit toppings were fresh for the most part; the topping bins were pretty full, which can be read as either a good or bad sign (good = they keep it well stocked to be prepared for any rushes; bad = they don't get too much business so the toppings are sitting out for awhile untouched). Pricing is still $0.35/ounce. Since this is the only place in the area that sells froyo (aside from Quickly next door), I'd settle for it if I had a horrible craving that simply couldn't wait. However, next time I'll make sure to scout out other froyo shops (I need to get to the Sunset soon...) when another craving hits. read more

They are SO happy... seriously... they were so sweet and nice and friendly, and not in a fake way, they were just nice-- a guy and a girl-- both times I went... a month apart.... and both times... only one flavor was working... and it was the tart one. I'm not a big fan of speaking to the cashier or employees unless necessary, but don't worry I'm not introverted. They score on the self-serve machines and stuff. YEAH. I like their flavors and especially tart, they have this section where you can test try the flavors before you get the full-on size. Score! Granted, they only have two flavors and one of them always being the original tart... I'm ok with it. I'm so indecisive that this helps. It's a surprise every time to see what flavor is there. The first time I came here it was pistachio and that was surprisingly delish! The staff is super helpful. There was one worker who recognized us everytime and was just very friendly. Now I just call them to see what flavors they have before I venture out. Sometimes I think everyone is just spoiled by the selection of flavors. I'm ok with being limited. I am only giving a poor review because the hours of this shop are really inconsistent. We walked about 20 blocks to go here on Saturday. The shop opens at 1pm. We arrived at 12:55 and waited till almost 1:30pm. After a nice walk and the expectation of some froyo, it was super frustrating that the staff did not care to open their shop on time. There was no sign stating they would be late, and we also called their number listed online. We ended up leaving because we had no idea when they would even show up, and we were starting to get hungry. Contrary to the slightly dated reviews on Yelp, Happy Yogurt now has two froyo machines! I discovered this little place on a bus adventure yesterday, and, despite its somewhat modest exterior, Happy Yogurt made a great impression. The owner is so sweet, the store so neat, the toppings so varied (Happy Yogurt has chocolate rocks! Chocolate rocks! And lychee bubbles!), the pistachio flavor so delicious, and the price so good (35 cents per ounce, I think?) If I lived closer to Happy Yogurt I swear I'd grow fat on ice cream's supposedly healthier cousin. However, as it is, I'll only be able to binge on the light, airy froyo when I make the occasional journey to Fresh & Easy, another mindblowing discovery in that neighborhood. read more
