I'm a lover of fish and chips, and there's just not many legit spots around anymore. I saw this place on Yelp and was hopeful, but I was not impressed. Food is cooked after you place your order so you know it's freshly cooked. Portions are large, prices are small. I wanted to love it, but it just lacked flavor. Even after salting it, and dipping in vinegar and tartar sauce, it wasn't very flavorful. Don't get me wrong, the food was not bad at all. It just wasn't the best I've fish and chips I've ever had. I didn't like that they charge for tarter sauce. I don't mean that they charge for "extra" sauce; they change for even one small container to go with a 3 piece order I get that it's a mom and pop joint, so they have to make a profit somehow, but I feel like tarter sauce should be included with you order. The owners were very sweet and chatty. For that treason alone, I'd say try this place out. You might like the food. Service was exceptional, which is a rarity these days. read more

So simple, yet SO good!! Located along Union in the same plaza as Gyros, Burgers & More, Harbor Fish & Chips serves deep fried fish goodness in huge portions. Some co-workers and I came here on a rainy day hoping to warm up with fried fish and salty chips. It seemed the best bang for our buck was the Combo, which came with a large churro-shaped fish, three shrimp, onion rings AND fries. By the time we opened up our lunch back at work, the to-go bags were almost soaked in oil... good, now I don't have to waste napkins dabbing the oil off haha. Came here to satisfy a fried shrimp craving. This place is truly a hole in the wall, mom and pop operation. Went on a Sunday night, the plaza was empty, but there were a good amount of customers in line here. I ordered the family combo, 5 large pieces of fish, 10 shrimp, onion rings, and fries (all fried and delicious) for $40. The food was a bit greasy (what do you expect, it's fish and chips), but not overly greasy. Fish was nice and flaky, and the shrimp were a decent size, not tiny. Paired well with the tartar and cocktail sauce. Fries and onion rings were good too. Overall, I would come back to satisfy my fish and chips craving. The ambiance isn't great, but you can't dine in anyway because of Covid. Good fish and chips for the price. read more

I've driven by this place for years now but never stopped in. This past week I started to again look for a place that had Fried Mushrooms on their menu and this lace popped up! So today I decided I needed a snack and went off to check it out. It's a cute mom and pop store with a reasonable offering on menu. Prices are fair ( ignoring that everything has gone up I'm recent years) nice place to stop by for a fish and chips meal for sure Of course my goal was Fried mushrooms and settling a Clam Chowder craving. Well , the mushrooms were tasty and I quite enjoyed the clam chowder. I also ordered chips because ... well why not right? And found them pretty average but good enough. Clearly a nice little place that I will Visits more, especially as the older couple who own and run it have been having a challenging time with increased costs and slower biz. Like so many of the independent restaurants in San Jose, this small, family owned fish and chips is place tucked away in a strip mall. According to the Yelp listing, it was formerly an H. Salt Fish 'n Chips, but it is no longer affiliated. The owner has done their best to give it an "English" feel, with British posters, a seaside mural on the back wall, and the obligatory red phone booth. This place is fine, with decent portions and is relatively inexpensive, so you can fill up for cheap. They cut the fish into long strips - kind of like a giant fish sticks. There is more seafood to choose from, including shrimp, scallops and calamari, that can be added to a combo, or make up it's own meal. They also offer onion rings, fried mushrooms, artichokes and zucchini, in addition to fries, so there is plenty of variety. The coating is crispy and crunchy, and looks like a traditional British beer batter, but based on the taste I'm not sure they use a recipe with beer, which is crucial. That ingredient is what gives the fish 'n chips a savory depth and richness, which I feel is missing. The batter takes on more of a tempura texture and flavor, which is fine, but you may be a little disappointed if you are craving something authentic. read more

This is one time where I was done wrong by the yelp reviews. Let's roll. Came to Santa Cruz for a quick family trip. I was craving fish n chips but Santa Cruz has nothing good to offer. Stopped in SAn Jose area and decided to try and find fish n chips. Based on the yelp reviews, we found Harbor. The nice Asian lady seem to have trouble knowing the menu but we worked through that. I ordered a family meal and some fried mushrooms. The food was pretty fast. It was time to dig in. The food was not greasy which is a good thing. They use nice thick cuts of fish. So my wife and kid liked the fish and the fried shrimps. I personally thought the fish lacked a salty flavor. Definitely needed a lot of tartar sauce. The shrimps were big boys. Nice. The mushrooms were HORRIBLE. That right there was a total waste of money. In the end, I was not personally impressed with this place. Would I come back, not at all. read more

So I'm a bit conflicted here. I personally, don't really care for the food, it's too heavy for me. However, other people that I know like the food a lot. I really like my fish with a light moderately seasoned batter. This keeps the fish moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. HF&C uses a heavy batter, on everything. It left me feeling a little bloated not bad, just funny feeling. The quality of fish that I had was good and fresh and it seems like they change the oils so they clean, which is good. But it's just not my taste. In conclusion, it's not bad, I know people that would give this place a 5/5, for me it's more like a 3/5, just average but some people really like the food. I personally probably won't be back, I'm just not a fan of deep fried everything. read more

So sorry, but the restaurant is not clean. The gentleman taking counter orders did not wash his hands. The iPad I completed my payment on was covered in sticky finger prints. Cash handling, food handling, sauce handling... without washing. I ordered the Combo, 1 fish, 3 prawns, 3 onion rings, & chips. The prawns were my favorite. I asked for cocktail sauce and it was very tasty, but I did wrap all of the bottles (tartar sauce, cocktail sauce & ketchup) with napkins before handling, as they were all communal used and the bottles were sticky. Strangely the fish was a a little tough. There is good potential here! But, most importantly, please clean your restaurant and the communal containers. read more

Dang! This little fish & chip shop is so good! My husband and I decided to try them one afternoon for lunch (April 2021), they seemed to be doing limited capacity indoor dining and we opted to grab a bunch of stuff for takeout. The portions are really big! We decided to share a couple things and got the two fish & chip entree along with a side of coleslaw, cup of chowder and onion rings. The batter stayed crispy on the ride home and was nice and crispy. The fish was mild and flaky. The onion rings were really good and the chowder was solid too. This place one of those hole-in-the-walls that are a total gem Fish pieces are HUGE and quality is good, and the battering is perfect in my opinion. Didn't need to add salt or pepper because tartar + hot sauce did the trick. They also give out ranch to-go if you ask. Came here with a friend on a Friday afternoon and the place was packed! Line was pretty much at the door the whole time but service was still super friendly, so props to them. Had to order ours to-go because there was no seating. My friend really liked this place. Me not so much. The prices are very reasonable. It seems to have lots of regular clientelle. 1 turn off was that the staff (which seems to be a family) were all kind of unkempt, aprons very dirty and wrinkled. Place was kind of sloppy and worn down. I didn't know what to expect and it didn't certainly wasn't a fancy place but we were very pleasantly surprised. We placed our order to go and everything was made right then. We got the combo and clam strips, both with chips. Can't have enough chips. The combo came with a huge piece of fish, shrimp, onion rings and more chips. Everything was very good with just the right amount is breading/batter and although it was all fried, of course, nothing seemed too greasy. We also ordered some cole slaw which was very good. This place is pretty popular. There were lots of customers in the restaurant and the phone kept ringing with orders. I probably won't recommend this place and go back again. It is in a shopping plaza and we stopped by based on yelp review when I took my kid to a school activity. The food was just OK, the fish and chip probably was the worst we have ever had. greesy and not very tasty. The place was medium size but not well decorated.
