So, we escape the stress of reality and get away to relax in Key West. We spot Harpoon Harry's on corner. Looked like a cool place and Yelp said good things so in we went. Nice menu. Friendly staff. Decent prices. Kitschy decor. All was going well and then comes on Fox News and Tucker Carlson blabbing about politics. Everything we wanted to get away from. And to make matters worse some lady who was friendly with folks behind the counter came in and was selling her F Joe Biden crap. Whatever your politics are - keep it away from my meal. This place seemed cool but quickly turned into what appeared to be a hangout for right wing fascists. read more

Everything about this place is amazing. We came for lunch but they had a breakfast menu so that's how we rolled. We were seated immediately and our waitress promptly came and took our bevy order. If you are in Key West, even for a day, make it a point to stop here for breakfast. It's a liiiiiiittle off the beaten path (i.e. a little walk from all the Duval St. action) but the low prices, quality of the food, and service make it worth the trip. We went after being told by many folks they serve what is the best bloody mary on the island (appropriately titled "The Bloody Harry"), and since trying it myself am a believer. Not only do they provide an entire garden of a garnish, they get the spicy/hardy/tomato balance just right. And its always nice when you can taste juuuuuust a little bit of vodka to remind you its there. ;) As for food, everything our party tried was excellent. Personally I went for the 'Lobster Po Boy' which was scrambled eggs with sausage gravy and huge chunks of delicious lobster, served on a toasted english muffin, and with a side of roasted potatoes. Everything was melt in your mouth perfection. We never felt rushed, and the joint was comfortably crowded. Our server was friendly and not overbearing but made sure we were well taken care of during our visit. The food was average, which is what I was expecting coming to a diner type place by the boat docks. The following is what I was not expecting. It is no secret that I am not some skinny chick eating salads all day. I would say I am fat and most people if not all people would probably agree. I was approached by the waitress there you started the conversation off by say "I don't want you to get mad but I really want to share something with you". She proceeded to tell me how she had seen a long time friend who had lost a bunch of weight. When she asked him how he said by taking this all natural pill. Of course this all natural pill cost x amount of dollars (sounded like an Amway kind of thing). I was trying to be zen like and recognize that this is her path and turn it into a postive. Yeah it didn't work as I am still on the otherside of the country irritated by it. To top it off, once she was done with me (and I said I was really happy that she was so excited about this and wished her luck) she pulled another associate aside. That aside just happened to be across from my table and very loudly explained the program again to this associate. Really? Well this fat A$# was going to order another bloody Harry (which was really good, lots of horseradish) and sit and enjoy the enironment, but I wound up simply leaving. I might add that once I was not in agreement to jump for joy over the magic pill, it was everything I could do to get service again. On a possitve note at least she didn't see me a year ago...there was 1/3 of a more of me to love ;) She may have suggested a two pill plan for me. read more

A fun joint that serves a solid breakfast. The special was a Heapin' Harry... home fries topped with sliced ham topped with two eggs topped with cheese topped with gravy. If they topped it with anything else, they'd need a front end loader to get it to the table. I attempted to eat one and it was great, I just couldn't find the bottom of the plate. As good as the breakfasts were, the service was actually the highlight of our meal. The staff was warm, funny, and efficient at the same time while dealing with a large breakfast crowd. Our server, Debbie, was a hoot. When she discovered it was our 50th anniversary, she handed the bill to my son with no questions asked. No one questioned her authority. She then proceeded to offer me marital advice on the care and handling of a wife. Before we left I politely asked her to stand on a chair so I could get her picture. I thought she was going to slap me with an egg. I'd go back to this place even if the food was bad just to revisit Debbie. read more

My wife and I make a habitat out of trying to scope out the best breakfast place when we go on weekend getaways, and I think we won the Key West round by picking Harpoon Harry's. It's a cute little, old school style breakfast place, about a block from the water and everything was great. The service was fast even though it was packed (we waited for about 10 minutes to grab a table), everybody was helpful and nice. The food (as it should) stole the show. I had the Western Omelet and is was AWESOME! My wife, the french toast and bacon platter, she loved it as well. Another new place on our most recent trip to Key West, Harpoon Harry's has been recommended to us many times over the years. Finally, we agreed to forego our normal breakfast rut and give it a try with some friends. We were not at all disappointed. First, this place is very popular, so if you don't arrive early, expect to wait for a bit. We only wound up waiting 25 minutes, which was not the end of the world. This is a pretty typical diner as far as atmosphere goes. Nothing fancy, but very local feeling. Once seated, a friendly server quickly took our drink orders. I had heard the bloody marys were spectacular, so I gave it a try. While it was very good and a solid bloody mary, I don't think I would put it in my top 10. But I'm a bit of a Bloody Mary snob to begin with. Food-wise, they had a pretty extensive breakfast menu with lots of typical diner favorites and a few with a twist. I opted for a basic bagel and lox. It was fantastic and for about $7? No way! Nice fresh bagel, generous portion of smoked salmon and of course, capers, onion and cream cheese. Awesome diner-style breakfast! After feeling less than impressed with the free breakfast at our inn, my friend and I wandered down to Harpoon Harry's for more of a meal. Loved the decor: a friendly, '50s diner vibe with fun stuff on the walls. Also loved the service. Everyone who worked here was SO nice! From the host to the lady who grabbed me some splenda when I wandered up to the counter asking for it, everyone seemed happy and really glad to help. The food was also good! I got the standard breakfast (eggs, bacon, etc.) with Cuban toast. Loved that the Cuban toast was an option! My friend got a bagel/lox special and was happy too. In all, everything was great! The waitress also took our order, someone else brought out our food and she never came back. Someone else also brought over the check. Weird customer service. Less than pleased with Harpoon Harry's. From the start, it wasn't going so well. We walked in and there's a sign that says to wait to be seated. So we stand there and wait. Two employees at the bar, knowing we are there waiting for seats, just look at us with no acknowledgement. After quite a long, awkward moment, one says, "would you like to be seated?" Well, duh. We got two glasses of water, my boyfriend's was dirty. He ordered pancakes and I ordered a Cuban egg sandwich. I'm from Miami and I'm Cuban so I know these sandwiches, and this one was less than mediocre. Pretty bland and the cheese was hardly melted. And for about $9?! Get out of here! You can get a much better Cuban egg sandwich in Miami for $2-$3. Rip off. My boyfriends pancakes looked sad and his syrup was very watery. Harpoon Harry's is a great place to grab a good meal for a great value. The folks there are very amiable and helpful. Service is quick, as well. I came in off a quick dinner and was very happy with the albacore tuna melt. In moment of weakness I found they also have great cake and pie made by a local bakery. We have eaten here twice while in Key West. The first time was for lunch and I got the CBLT on rye with potato salad. My husband got the rib special. It came with fries and coleslaw. Everything was good and the service was quick. The second time we went for breakfast and got the country fried steak and corned beef hash. The sausage gravy was really good. I ordered eggs on the side because I don't like everything mixed together. They were happy to take special requests. Our server, Judy did a good job. Wow, this place really left me happy. The host was super nice, and let me know about the longer wait. Which was fine by me, I had time. When I sat at the bar Annie was very quick to greet me, even when the restaurant was busy. I ordered the biscuits and gravy and a side of home fries, which were absolutely delicious! I added a bit of their house hot sauce for some spice and it was just perfect. I ended my meal with a cafe con leche. Which hit the spot at well. My total for my meal was less than $15, WHICH IS INSANELY FAIR! For the amount of food I got, and knowing prices in key west, I was very pleased on my food total. The wait staff is friendly, foreign, and quick on the refill. A full bar is unusual in a diner, but it's Key West, so why not? Revelation lies in a side dish. Drawn in by the lure of free wifi and frustrated by the underplanned reality of a dead battery, I wanted to order something small. Nobody likes a freeloader. "Cuban Toast, please." "With cheese?" the waitress inquired, expectantly, "Yes. With Cheese. Thanks!" it was seventy-five extra cents. The plate, a six inch loaf of pillowy Cuban bread bisected, stuffed with simple yellow American Cheese (irony!) and hot pressed to flaky crispness without and molten cheese love within, and only set me back $2.50. A bottomless cup of coffee was another two bucks. In the end, I had an amazing accidental grilled cheese sandwich and maybe the cheapest breakfast in the Keys. If you're like me, you hate omelettes where the egg simply "blankets" the ingredients. This omelette was thick all the way through, with the cheese and vegetables scattered throughout. The Cuban egg sandwich was pressed, so the bread was nice and crispy on the outside. Inside? Diesel. Side potatoes were good too, but had to take a back seat to the main attraction. Service was quick and friendly and the prices were reasonable. Will definitely come back next time we're in Key West. Hoping the lunch is as good as the breakfast! read more
