Came here on a Friday night and got to sit on the top floor over looking the reaturant. I had a signature elmo cocktail and ordered off of the devour indy menu. I had the shrimp cocktail, Cesar salad and the 6oz filet. The table also ordered calamari. The elmo cocktail is delicious and super strong, worth the money. The shrimp cocktail was superrrr spicy. I read reviews and only had a small piece of horseradish but it still hit me like a truck, at least my sinuses are cleared. The calamari was amazing and one of the best calamari dishes I've ever had, the sauce that came with it was also perfect. The salad was a perfect refresher beforeq the steak. The ambiance was nice and we were thrilled that it was open late after a late cheer comp. We also could get there from the inside. The food itself was not very delicious, although it was trying to be. We got the penne Alfredo with chicken and the cod with mashed potatoes instead of green beans. The cod was delicious and fresh tasting but everything else sat under the heat lamp for too long! The potatoes and remolaude sauce had a crust and the pasta was dried out. The service was not fabulous, but it was after 10:00, so I'm giving that a pass. They did hand us a dish that was covered in something, which was pretty gross. I'm guessing earlier in the day might be a better experience. The bread they brought out was delicious although we already had toasted ravioli, so we tried to go light on the rolls. We really enjoyed the meal and were pleased to learn that the kitchen is shared with the famous St. Elmo's steakhouse. The food and service is top notch! The waitress went above and beyond to make it an upscale experience. The patio was covered and a dredging spot for lunch. I was surprised to see they had a lunch menu which three course specials. They were such great deals! My husband has celiac and has to eat gluten free. The manager came out to check with us and assured us he would take care of my husbands allergy needs. They had a separate gluten free menu. I can't get over how nice the manager was too! I understand why this place has such a poor rating. You would think it would be great but it's really not. You would think that people in Indianapolis would know how to do a steakhouse right, even a mid tier one but nope. I also want to preface this by saying I am very sincerely kind to wait staff in general. I say please, thank you, ask how they are, make eye contact. I think working in food service seems like the worst job and I appreciate that it's a grind. I just want to be kind. I have trained myself. All that said the servers at the bar were rude. I remember thinking oh I don't think I'm the cause of your problems. She warmed up but it's not my job to communicate that I am being nice so you then choose to be unawful. The host was also really awful - kind of dismissive. I checked a roller bag and the person who returned it to me did kind of a pass-by without acknowledging me. I also noticed that my bag and briefcase were just sort of sitting out and available for someone to steal in an unlocked office when I was done eating. It just lacked professionalism. I ordered French onion soup and I have never said this before in my life but it had too much cheese on it. You would think this was not possible but this was like a caricature of French onion soup. I got a steak and mashed potatoes. The steak looked pre-grilled and tasted like it too. The mashed potatoes were from a vat where you could still see the outline of the scoop. In short, basic. Basic AF. I actually reduced the rating from 3 to 2 starts upon calm reflection. I periodically spend time in Indianapolis and do considerable business long distance in Indy and Carmel. My overall observations are that many of the people should move out because they are obviously unhappy. Life is too short to eat this food or spend too much time here. read more

Although I don't eat here regularly, I have been dining with this Harry and Izzy's for ten years. I used to come over for a nice lunch when I worked on the circle and really appreciated that they have a special lunch selection that makes it easy to get in and be fed without being late back to the office. Now that I am retired, I just don't get downtown for lunch as often, so it required a planned visit to get reacquainted. Surprisingly, I had never reviewed this place before. It has been well maintained and while convenient for lunch, it still has all the finery that makes for a nice evening meal with the white tablecloths and black napkins. I don't feel I have to dress up to dine here, but would feel comfortable in a suit s well. We parked inside the convenient parking garage of the Circle Centre Mall although there isn't any signage in the garage telling you were to go to find the restaurant. There are some stairs and escalators involved, but we managed to arrive and because it was a weekday lunch, didn't need reservations for our party of two. A moment's wait and we were shown to a table that had a nice view of the restaurant as well as windows for viewing outside. Our server Maggie did a fine job of getting our orders placed. They do use that Rorshach looking doodle to scan with your phone (hate those) but did have a printed lunch special menu that I found very useful. My wife and I got very similar meals, both opting for the filet sliders (extremely tender and well seasoned bites) served on Hawaiian rolls. The sliders came with a horsey dipping sauce that wasn't overpowering, just nicely balanced. One of the odd things was that the "side" included a cup of soup. Because it was a side, the soup wasn't brought out early, but served with the sliders. I would have liked to have had it early. The soup was a tasty Tomato Basil, with croutons which I really enjoyed, but my wife found to to be too heavily seasoned. She upgraded her salad to a wedge salad while I went with the a delicious Hearts of Romaine salad with candied walnuts and a rosemary vinaigrette. We both enjoyed the salads a great deal. Then to finish off the meal, we also had a choice of desserts. She went with the fudge brownie with ice cream and whipped cream while I chose the creme brulee. Again, excellent choices and left us feeling very pleased with our decisions and glad we made the trip downtown to get out of the boring routine of summer holiday BBQ and pizza. I never order a steak out. I feel like I can always make a better one at home. However, after being in Indianapolis for nearly a month on business, I decided I needed a steak. I was given recommendations for several steak houses. But decided to go to Harry & Izzy's as it appeared a little more casual. Normally I order a ribeye, but they happened to be out. To their credit there was a huge convention in town that brought in about 70,000 people, so I ordered a New York steak medium-rare instead. It's not often that I get a beautifully cut steak cooked to perfection when I'm eating out, but that's what I got. I had fries with my steak as well, say what you want about that, but they were cooked perfectly as well. The service here was outstanding. It was such a great environment, not stuffy at all. Everyone really appeared to be working at the top of their game. I will certainly be back again if I find myself in Indianapolis. This is what a steakhouse should be! read more

Harry & Izzy's has an excellent layout that surrounds a large circular bar, with tables around it and on a few different levels, which really breaks up the space nicely. Pro Tip: Lunch is the more affordable option if you're looking for value. The professional wait staff was ready for my small group, and brought out water and drinks from the bar quickly while we waited for our orders to arrive. Everyone on staff was excellent, cheers to the team! I ordered the lunch prime rib-eye, and it was so delicious I almost ordered a second one! This was my first visit (despite being in Indy several previous times) and I know that H&I will be on my itinerary for every future visit. She fully knows the menu details, every element of the bar, offers positive/honest opinions when asked, and then completes the experience with a great personality during service that is attentive and accurate. The shrimp cocktail has already been fully covered in reviews (loved it!!), my sliders met all the positive descriptions I'd read earlier, but my surprise moment was perhaps the most simple . . . the fresh house chips (not fries) had a dip that was extraordinary. A thick french onion dip with extra ingredients. I'd love to be able to make it myself. The dining room is ultra-clean, and the servers do a superb job of backing each other up. Not worth the price. Steaks were excellent, but the sides were not great especially considering the price. I ordered the Chicken in Wild Mushroom Demi Glace with Mashed Potatoes. The chicken was slightly dry. There were no mushroom pieces in the "demi glace". It was NOT a demi glace and had a bitter aftertaste. The mashed potatoes had (cheddar?) cheese in them and it didn't go well with the chicken. It only tasted good with the side of sauteed mushrooms added. Each part was fine separately, except the bitter gravy, but it was nothing special. It is something I would expect from Applebee's at a third of the price. The Ribeye steak was very good. It was properly cooked with an excellent sear. The sauteed mushrooms side was delicious. The restaurant was pretty, but the entry was small and awkward for waiting. The Brussels sprouts were terrible. They were not good. The sprouts were not caramelized, and the dressing left a strange aftertaste that was unpleasant. They also don't show the Cubs game at the bar, only sports news. My rum and coke was delicious, but didn't have the H & I stirrer which would have been useful and a fun addition to my scrapbook. Flavors were mediocre. Service was good. Restaurant was clean. Decor was lovely. Don't play the Cubs game in the bar.Not sure if she was unwilling or unable. read more

So this spot has the same owners as its neighbor St. Elmo's steakhouse, they have a few of the same dishes, shrimp cocktail and they buy their steaks from the same place. I booked reservations on open table. I wasn't sure if they would be needed or not since we are from out of town. We were staying near the restaurant and could access the restaurant from the center Mall. We were promptly seated. A few suggestions were made and our experience began. My hubby ordered a beer, domestic they have a hand mail of ipas on tap. I ordered a lemon drop martini. We ordered the shrimp cocktail, this is not for the faint at heart. I'm a horseradish fan so I love it!! We also ordered the calamari. I had the radiotoni pasta, my hubby ordered the jump scallops and my kiddo ordered the sliders, filet, Po boy, and chicken. How can we come here and not order dessert. My hubby and kiddo has crime brûlée and I had the peanut butter pie. The pie was like you were punched In the face with peanut butter. We picked this restaurant based on the number of Yelp reviews. There is no dress code and although we didn't have a reservation, I would recommend making one. We were here on Indy weekend after the parade and was told no reservations were available but you were welcome to the bar. There were a good amount of tables and we got lucky to find one after 5 minutes. Our waiter was also bartending so we had to wait awhile for service - give her a raise! Once we got help, service was quick and attentive. It was a tad bit past their lunch hour but they let us order off their lunch menu - 10 ounce prime rib for both of us. The regular prime rib lacked salt and Izzy style tastes like A1 steak sauce with a black pepper crust. The fried green tomatoes were delicious and the green beans were heavy with red bell peppers. Dined at H&I with my family to celebrate my birthday. We had a great experience and the food was delicious as always. This has been a family favorite in the area for a long time now. The shrimp cocktail is a must. The cocktail sauce is so good... and it hurts so good! I highly recommend, but just be careful as to how much cocktail sauce you try on that first bite. You've been warned. :) I got the 6oz. filet cooked medium with the green beans as my side. It was cooked perfectly and the green beans were also very good. I asked for the Harry & Izzy steak sauce, but it was just so-so in my opinion. I prefer A1. Otherwise, everything was great and my family all enjoyed their meals as well. Since it was my birthday I had the choice of a dessert. I got the creme brûlée and it was rich, creamy and perfect with that sweet, crunchy top... agh, craving it now.
