This is my new favorite restaurant in Houston. From valet to exit, service was great. The decor and ambience were warm and welcoming. There is a huge lounge area with couches and tables. Last night was my first visit, so I have not sampled much of the menu, but what I had was excellent. Onion rings are served on a vertical stake and cooked perfectly. I'm a big connoisseur of Brussels sprouts, and these were among the best I've had anywhere. My entree was the brisket stroganoff, unique and excellent! For dessert, my wife and I split a huge slice of some of the best pecan pie I have had. I look forward to coming back and trying more items from the extensive menu. The prices are quite reasonable for the quality of food and service. I think this would be a great place for a first date or a family celebration. There is also a large party room for private events. My friends and I decided to try Haywire for a girls' night and "cowgirl dinner" after seeing the restaurant online. It looked like a nice upscale place, so we were excited to give it a try. The restaurant itself is very nice--while not extremely upscale, it has a welcoming environment where guests can dress however they feel comfortable. When we arrived for our 8:30 p.m. reservation, we unfortunately were not greeted right away. The host took about 5-7 minutes to acknowledge us as she was upstairs. After about 15 minutes, we were finally taken upstairs to be seated. As we entered the elevator, we were informed that the restaurant had already run out of the "cowgirl dinner," and no one had reached out beforehand to notify us, which was disappointing since that was the main reason for our visit. Once upstairs, we noticed the restaurant had a beautiful rustic-themed ambiance that really fit the concept of the place. We asked our server if substitutions could be made so we could still enjoy the cowgirl dinner, but she was unsure. After about 30 minutes, the manager stepped in and worked something out for us, which we truly appreciated. He was very accommodating and helped both our table and another group of women with a similar issue. The steak and fries were amazing and definitely a highlight of the meal. However, the salad dressing was not our favorite and the lemon drop martini was not the best in our opinion, though everyone's taste may differ. Overall, while the experience had some bumps in the beginning, we appreciated the manager's effort to accommodate us. I went to Haywire with friends last year and had the most amazingly tender BBQ ribs. They were so fantastic. Last night however, we went back and I was so excited to get the ribs again. They were terribly over cooked, hard a chew. Not fall off the bone as before. I was so sad. I only ate half and brought home the left overs for lunch today. I just ate them and was reminded at how terrible they were. Not sure what happened. We had a fantastic waiter though! Beautiful restaurant. read more

This was technically my third visit to Haywire in Memorial City, but my first time sitting down for a regular meal. I went with the chicken fried steak and made a last-minute call to swap out the green beans for cornbread--easily the best decision I made all day. The chicken fried steak was solid, with a tender cut and a crispy exterior. The jalapeño gravy added a nice kick and tied the dish together. Mashed potatoes were nicely whipped, though a bit mild in flavor, but the gravy helped with that. The real standout? The cornbread. Slightly sweet, moist, and just delicious. It's the kind of side that could steal the show. Of course it didn't make my photo, oops! Overall, a satisfying meal that left me full but not overly stuffed. We went here for Mother's Day Brunch Buffet and it was not good at all. I was looking forward to the cold shrimp and smoked salmon. The shrimp was so overcooked and rubbery. The salmon was, well I have no idea how to describe it but it was different and not in a good way. I went to try the prime rib and it was very tasty. I looked at the buffet where they fish, chicken, vegetables, etc were and 3/4 of the pans were empty and the serving area a mess. This was just not a good experience at all. I know many restaurants are overwhelmed on Mother's Day so I am taking that into consideration, but if you are going to put on a show, do it with excellence. Clean the space. Fill the trays. I will preface this review by saying it is admittedly harsh (for justifiable reasons). As perfect as Haywire's vibe, service, and cocktails were, one dish made my brunch experience there subpar. We went for a birthday brunch of 12 people. Haywire's rustic, open space with warm-wood and leather Texas aesthetic give it a modern country feel that isn't too kitschy. For the size of our group, service was pretty attentive and kindly accommodated splitting checks and us bringing in a birthday cake with no issue or upcharge. The cocktails were amazing. 10/10. Everyone raved about their drinks. My Front Porch Swing was so good I got it twice, a well done balance of citrusy and sweet. The espresso martini seemed to be a hit as several people ordered them. The blueberry biscuit and queso with pork appetizers were delicious, a perfect match of sweet and tart and smoky savory. The mini kolaches had good flavor but were a overcooked, turning hard once they were tepidly warm. Now here is the rub...If you are a southern themed restaurant in the South and have chicken and waffles on your menu, it should be one of the go-to staples. And in a city like Houston with nationally award winning chicken and waffles, it should be at least good if not great. Haywire's chicken and waffles was bad. Like I didn't finish it bad. The chicken tasted like something from a fast food restaurant or frozen and pre-breaded from a bag. The waffle was hot but already soggy when it came to my table, most likely because it had been pre-poured with syrup--an absolute sin for chicken and waffles. And despite this, I still needed more syrup as the waffle was somehow also dry with a grainy, unpleasant texture. Of the four people who got this dish, none of us were happy. The other ordered entrees seemed to be good. Friends at the table, as well as past reviews from my parents, imply the dinner menu is more solid. As I said, I would be willing to try Haywire for dinner, but I can't say if it will be any time soon. read more

We had a high top table on the second floor with the most comfortable seats, and a great view of the the surrounding area below. The drinks were flowing and the service was great. I had the hamburger with a wedge salad and fries. Everything was delicious! The bourbon smash is very good. Slightly sweet and crafted very well. Reservations are suggested. Had a reservation and was running late we called to see if they had a grace period or if we needed to cancel. They told us they had a 15 min grace period. We get there and the host didn't even look up to greet us! Had her head down looking at the iPad. Said "are yall ready to be seated" like no after we are 10 mins late we wanna stand and talk to you.. we respond yes.. Still looking down at the iPad she points and says you can take the stairs or elevator someone can help you there. So we walk up the stairs no one is there. So we're just standing around. We had to walk up to someone and ask them where to sit... they sit us in the very corner a sever comes to greet us after almost 10 mins. Might be able to self park around somewhere but probably not worth the risk/hassle. Unsure if it was because we were young but we received butter knives to cut our steak & once we asked for proper knives we received an attitude from waiter. I've been wanting to try Haywire for a while now so when my daughter decided to go there for her birthday I was excited. They have valet parking, which is $5. The ambiance is nice. Downstairs there is a bar area and what appeared to be a lounging area. I believe all the dining room seating is upstairs. The dress code is casual, I wish I would have worn my boots instead of heels. It was a little noisy because of a table across the room but it was manageable. Our server was nice and attentive. The food was just okay. We started with the lump crab dip and mini elk tacos which were a little bland. We then ordered the Bone-In Cowboy Ribeye steak with grilled asparagus and Mac and cheese. Some colleagues were in town so we stopped in for a team dinner. Love the location and the ambiance. When you arrive you can either valet for $5 or self park in the garage. The downstairs bar and entrance are very stylish and welcoming. Very Texas rustic chic. Our party sat upstairs near the bar at a high top table. Service was good the waiter Bradley was very attentive to our large party. I originally planned to order the Texas Redfish but they were out of that and the Bass. So I got the blackened catfish shrimp with mashed potatoes and corn. Everything was prepared and seasoned well. The potato were creamy and delicious and that corn was so flavorful. I didn't get the cornbread but one of my coworkers raved about how delectable it is. I didn't have a cocktail this visit but I plan to go back and enjoy the bar and hopefully the Redfish. *BRUNCH REVIEW* Haywire absolutely nails the Texas ranch-inspired ambiance--it's rustic, cozy, and effortlessly stylish. The upstairs main dining room where we were seated for Sunday brunch had a warm, inviting feel, and the downstairs bar and lounge area looked like an ideal spot for happy hour. Unfortunately, the food didn't quite live up to the setting. We started with the Kolaches & Queso, which sounded amazing on the menu--house-made pretzels stuffed with local jalapeño cheddar sausage, paired with queso blanco. In reality? Just okay. Not bad, but not nearly as flavorful as expected. For my entrée, I went with the Steak & Eggs, featuring wagyu sirloin, roasted potatoes, and eggs. While the steak was cooked to my requested medium, it was incredibly tough--like, you better have some strong teeth tough. I gave up after eating about half. My friend ordered the Barbacoa Chilaquiles, and...Y'ALL. There was no barbacoa. As in, not a single bite of protein on the plate. When we pointed this out, our server was quick to fix it, bringing out a properly made dish, but how does a mistake like that even happen? Service was decent, and I can't stress enough how much I loved the aesthetic of this place. But in a foodie city like Houston, the food itself has to deliver--and this just didn't. I visited Haywire two nights in a row. Both were work functions. The first night was open bar appetizers and a buffet type meal for 40ish people in a private room upstairs . The service was great as was the food. The second night I was with a much smaller group of 10 tucked in an area just to the left of the entrance. Everyone enjoyed their meal and I do t think you could go wrong with anything on the menu. If you are staying in the Memorial City area or the Westin next door .... All I can say is wow about this place. Haywire has been in Houston for about a year or so ago and it's a shame it took me this long to check it out. This location is one of 5 throughout Texas and I believe they originated in Dallas. I don't give props to Dallas often, but I gotta give credit where it's due and thank them for giving us a location here. Houston's location is in the Memorial area in Gateway Memorial City complex. They have complimentary valet as well as a covered parking garage. Haywire is two stories with 9 different event spaces throughout that can accommodate groups as small as 10 people all the way up to a 100 people party barn that's separate from the main building. I don't know many other restaurants in Houston with options like that. The way I would describe this place is upscale country. You got the country western theme throughout but it still feels somewhat fancy inside. From the minute we walked in until the time we left, we had excellent customer service. My group of 7 had Isaiah as our waiter and he did such a great job. He was super friendly, prompt, and knowledgeable about the menu. We came for a later in the day brunch and were seated right away with a reservation. The brunch menu has everything from starters, soups & salads, brunch items, burgers, and lunch entrees. We started off with some cocktails. I went with the Cowboy Carajillo. It was a perfect brunch drink because it was like a hybrid old fashioned and espresso martini. It was very good. On top of the nice cocktail selection, they have a nice collection of spirits and wine as well. A few people ordered the Crispy Pork Belly Bites for starters. These little bite size morsels was like eating meat candy. They were cooked perfectly and had a sweet glaze. It was topped with pickled fresnos that gave it a nice bite. When it comes to southern, American cuisine, there is only one right choice if it's on the menu. The classic chicken fried steak. I did my research and also was told this was a hot seller. It usually comes with mashed potatoes and sautéed green beans but I went with mac & cheese and charred broccolini. When all of our food arrived, the wonderful aromas hit us right away. At first glance of my CFS, it looked like the batter was thin and not crispy. I was wrong. They used wagyu beef and the breading was seasoned to perfection. It was topped with one of the best creamy jalapeno and sausage gravies that I've had in a long time. I would say that this CFS alone might be one of the better ones in the city. The sides were also really delicious. They know how to season food here. Every component of every item was executed flawlessly. I tried bites of the crab cake benedict as well as the chicken fried chicken and egg biscuit. Both the crab and chicken were really good, but those biscuits were top notch. I wish I had room for dessert because they had some of my favorite, next time. Overall, I'm glad i finally crossed them off my list. This may be one of my new faves in town. We just had my dad's 80th surprise birthday at Haywire in their party barn area. The party barn is private and located right outside of their restaurant. I highly recommend them if you're looking to have a really nice party for 100 people. Everything was perfect for what we needed. Planning went smoothly and they executed it with precision. Booked a large party for my partner's birthday. Despite my best effort, I missed three people on my RSVP count, but they quickly accomodated us. Our server was Ezra and he did a good job managing all the requests, being extremely polite and of course getting our orders right. In fact, the only mixups that occurred happened because the staff who brought out the food didn't bring the ticket numbers so we had to a few extra passes until everyone had what they needed. We ordered the Chef's "Favorite 4" and each item was good. I particularly liked the mini elk tacos. Overall everyone liked the queso. I ordered the venison chili and thought I wouldn't finish it in anticipation of dinner, but it was so good, I ate all of it and the cornbread that came with it. Side note, the cornbread had enough sweetness and butter and it was soft - the perfect pairing. I ordered the meatloaf for my main at Ezra's insistence that it was good. I will admit when I ate it that night, I wasn't that impressed but a few days later when I ate my leftover, it was really good. The standout on the plate for me initially were the green beans - I'm not a green bean person but had already subbed my potatoes for mac n cheese (no bacon), so I decided to keep those and I'm glad I did. The combo of onions and seasoning was just right. This is the place to go if you want to try other types of meat beyond beef, chicken, pork and turkey, but need to dip your toe in the water without fully committing to a meal. There were enough items for everyone in our party who had different tastes to find something they like. Most everyone took home a box because the servings were good. One detail in particular I appreciated is the care they showed for the kids in our party. Ezra made sure to get their order in early so that they wouldn't be hungry waiting for the adults. Those are the little details that matter and make the experience. Will go back as now I want to try the chicken fried chicken and get some more chili. read more

I came with a group of friends for a birthday dinner and was pleasantly surprised by the decor. The restaurant is actually located on the second floor but on the first floor there is a bar/waiting area. I also saw a private room and some outdoor seating as well. Their theme is western but also trendy at the same time with chandeliers and nice iron doors/windows. The restaurant wasn't very packed but service was a little slower than what we expected. We were all looking around ready to place our orders for food and drinks. We started off with some shared appetizers and drinks. The menu includes some salads, steaks and mains like chicken fried steak/chicken/etc. I was surprised to see steaks on the menu ranging from $40-250 as for that price range I'd probably just rather go to a nice steak house instead. After the appetizers I had the guava margarita, Butcher's Cut Steak Salad, and some cornbread. We were sad to find out once our food all came out that they were actually out of fries which they failed to mention earlier so we settled for some onion rings instead. The steak was well cooked and not too chewy. I felt in general everything I had was saltier than I prefer but not unbearable. We ended the dinner off with some bread puddings which were a little hard and dense. Overall, it was a decent dinner. I didn't have any major complaints about food but also was not super impressed. I can see it being a nice spot to catch up with some friends. Service was okay, they didn't really say or come by much. I would have gladly ordered another drink but they never asked or gave me the chance to. I stumbled across this location from a girlfriend who invited me to go out for happy hour! I love me a good HH so of course I say yes. We ordered some of the best French 75s I've had to date. I even tried the Bourbon blast which was also delicious. Now while I wasn't a fan of the Elk tacos, found them to be wrote quite mid, luckily the waitress was lovely. The place is beautiful too.
