This is easily the worst bar in Jersey City. When me and my friends walked into the bar we were pushed and made fun of by the staff and stared at by the patrons. The beer here is cold and cheap. The beer is exceptionally cold, I don't think I can think of a place that serves colder beer in JC. The fries are good (I have never eaten anything else here). Generally, this place is chill. This is a place you can drain a beer or five with a friend while kinda paying attention to the sports on the TV's. There are bars with better, liquor, food and cocktails in JC. But if you just want cold cheap beer and some awesome fries, this place can't be beat. read more

I decided to come here due to the good reviews. I went on a weekday and I had better, there were really no specials and I get a better deal at Bennigan's. I had the pleasure of meeting Mayor Healy and his lovely wife last night after a very sad hour attending Officer Seals wake with a friend. The burgers are great and the jukebox is overworked. First time in Jersey City, greeted and welcomed by the owner and a brother. Easily my favorite place for several reasons: Prices Quality for said prices Bar food selection Friendliness And this one is a little biased but super convenient to walk to for myself. If you are around Grove or Journal Square, it's definitely worth the several minute walk. It's charm comes from it's simplicity - a huge bar where there is always a seat, an old school juke box, people buying rounds (yes, they ring the bell if you buy one for the house), and cheap beer (you can't beat $3 pints!). So, if you're looking for that, then yes, it's a 5 star bar. As for the service - always friendly. They are attentive and will actually make small talk with you in an effort to get to know their patrons. I'm new to downtown so I dont' have ties to all the political types in JC. This bar is close to my house so I started going because it was convenient. I've never once felt uncomfortable or out of place (I'm a woman in my late 20s). One yelper mentioned pushing and shoving - um, I've never even seen it that crowded to have to push your way through - so not sure what that's about. Also, I have to question some of the negative reviews. Yelpers are always so quick to give you a play by play about their negative experiences. It doesn't get much more local than Healy's. The bartenders are friendly, the beer is cold, the food is solid, and the jukebox has been known to pump out some great tunes. This is a beer and a shot type of place. No fancy wines or craft brew can be found here which is perfectly fine. This is the kind of bar where you come to unwind. It's not a bad place to start or end your night. I came to Healy's on St. Patricks Day after hearing about their 'shortest' parade. The parade was indeed short and lively, we loved it! For the festivities they had extra taps and a grill going in the back and the ability to drink in the street. We waited about 20 minutes to grab 4 beers but what else would you expect on St. Pattys? We'll be going back to check out the place on a more regular night and try the food. Slainte! read more

This is the WORST bar in Jersey City. I completely agree with the other posts about it being an unfriendly, even hostile environment. Bartenders are rude, food is bad and beer is even worse. If you like Bud and Bud Light you might want to go there, but otherwise steer clear. Patrons were heckling my friends and I when we were just minding our own business. The old man bar atmosphere wouldn't bother me as much if the bartenders and patrons acted like respectful adults. I greatly regret going there and hope others do not have to experience the same. Very blue collar divy cop bar. Cheap beer and decent jukebox. I've had dramatically different experiences over the 7 or so times I've visited. I've met 2 bartenders(one an owner) who were extremely attentive and friendly. And 3 other bartenders who ranged from inattentive to plain rude. It's an odd feeling to be overtly ignored in a mostly empty bar. I was more surprised than offended. We have been to Healy's twice during the day, we were doing a renovation a few blocks away and came in with work clothes on, nobody cared. We were hot, tired, thirsty and hungry. Healy's Tavern was perfect. We sat at the bar, downed ice cold suds, had delicious simple bar fare, got a reasonable check and left. I walk by this place multiple times a day when out with my dogs. Finally stopped in Saturday night with some friends visiting from out of town. Good local bar. Service was great. Probably the greatest bar i've ever been to. no BS, good crowd of people, drinks are cold and fresh, always super clean, no hipsters. A true Jersey city bar, and should be used as an example for others! On the 16th of January, I went to this bar to meet a friend for his birthday. We had only chatted before on Facebook, and today I decided to buy him a drink. When I got to the bar, it was pretty empty save for my friend and (the owner?). Not unexpected though, since it was a Monday and MLK's birthday was observed. While the bar itself was nice, what really impressed me was the bartender (Patrick). I've never been there before, but the he shook my hand when I got there. That's never happened to me before. Love this place, the crowd tends to be older but honestly this means no gross looking 24 year old is going to be hitting on me. The bartenders are all fantastic and the food is generally amazing! Chicken fingers are the food to get there along with nachos which can tend to be a little spicy because they put chili on top. The Healy Boys have really turned this once dim and dreary dive into a warm and vibrant watering hole. Everyone who lives within two miles of this place should make it a point to come here and everyone who lives within a few blocks of this place should make it a regular stop. They have ice cold Yuenling on tap and even the house red wine is surprisingly good. The beer is extremely cold and the service can't be beat: if it's not the owner himself behind the counter it's probably a relative or close friend of his. The menu is limited but well done (especially the fresh cut boardwalk fries that go good with everything). If you're looking for a sushi roll or a goat cheese walnut salad, you're in the wrong place; this is a bar, not a café trying to be a bar or a bar trying to be a café - just a bar, so you can check your tofu and mineral water at the door. Instead, pull up a chair, have a beer and a burger, and watch the game or B.S. with the friendly staff. Finally, and this is a big one for me, BEST JUKE BOX IN JERSEY CITY!!!!!! I stopped into this local haunt just last night with my fiend Jerome, was pre-gaming before the GBV show down the street. This, is one of the coolest places to just chillax. It is very much a neighborhood place, yet, if not from the area, you won't get roughed up or looked at weird, even if you were that weird guy last night trying to hi-five strangers. The beer selection on draft is not extensive, yet "ok" since you will most likely be chatting/killing time at a place like this. Nice people. The couple to my left were very engaged in watching in Jeopardy, and talked to me about some of the topics. The jukebox is super old-school (which I love), you can only play the discs inside, so, a lot of CCR, Talking Heads and James Brown. The bartenders were great. Oh, the food was good, affordable, and came out rather quickly. I could see myself watching a ball game on a Saturday afternoon at this place, like, really watch a game and not just be checking my phone, hoping someone likes what I posted on facebook. read more

This place is a good spot to great a drink. It's certainly an older crowd (not a place you'd go lookin for ladies), but a friendly atmosphere. The Healy Bros who own the joint and run the bar are good peeps. They care about the customers, and work hard to make their establishment run well. There are a bunch of flat screens with sports on, which is a HUGE plus for me. I haven't tried the food, but I've heard good things about it. When I went in with a crew the other night, we ordered a bunch of drinks, and posted up at the bar. Whichever Healy Bro took our order was super welcoming, and didn't demand us to pay cash or leave a credit card immediately. He trusted us to enjoy our cocktails, and then pay when we were ready to bounce. That's a BIG bonus in my opinion. When we were ready to go, he shook all of our hands, and thanked us for coming.
