Somewhat shady dimsum place for luring tourists and the uninformed. Don't let the colorful menu and popularity fool you, a lot of red flags. Different from other dimsum places is that this place didn't ask us what kind of tea we wanted. Most traditional dimsum places will ask what kind of tea you want and you can ask for black tea puer, chrysantheum, oolong, dragonwell etc. But here they straight up dropped a standard pot of tea at the table and they still charge you $1 per person for it. That's usually done at run of the mill chinese restaurant's that aren't serving dimsum traditionally. I tasted it and definitely was a normal class of tea that's no where near the quality of places like Mings or Windsor. For $1 per person tea charge, the expectation is able to choose a tea type and it should be of at least sufficient quality, but it didn't happen here. Second red flag is the prices. They didn't give us any menus but instead pointed to the QR code on table. This opened up the chowbus site with all the dimsum, entrees, rice and noodle dishes. Here is where the deception begins as the prices for most of the dimsum was $5.95 a dish which was actually pretty cheap compared to most places. When we got the check, it was actually $8.95 a dish. WTH? When we asked to see a paper menu, the dimsum listed had no prices next to them, they were blank! If you read further down (see screenshot) there's some text that says "Prices subject to change without notice". So they basically can charge whatever that day and you won't know until you get the bill. There was no signage, posting, or waitstaff letting us know of the dimsum prices. Third - Food The fried shrimp chives was deathly cold. Per pic, apparently, if you push a cart full of fried food around in open air dollar tree foil trays with no warmer, in a fully air conditioned dining room, things tend to get cold and congealed fast. Doesn't matter to them, they'll still server it so we can bit into frigid fried shrimp that's got a congealed oily core. The rest of the dimsum was so mediocre, myself who grew up on dimsum and my mother who is an old school dimsum lover, was so disappointed, we didn't even finish. The only good dish was the wonton brisket noodle soup. Although it was good, it can't save this place. Overall, I miss the old Hel La Moon that was originally on beach street. The Hei La Moon of today is just a greedy shadow of its former self that preys on tourist money and relies on its previous prestige and location to survive. read more

We decided to go to Hei La Moon because we wanted to try a place in Bostons Chinatown. From the beginning the expierence was a little weird. Pretty good dim sum experience - you've got the ladies pushing the carts old school-style; all the usual suspects food-wise (including chicken feet and tripe); and our group of six luckily didn't have to wait at all even during lunchtime on a weekend. They have two floors so chances are good that you don't have to deal with a long wait. Some of the dishes were better than others but overall, we stuffed ourselves silly for about $25 per person including tip/tax, which is a steal in this day and age. My favorites: The shrimp har gow - Generous shrimp filling inside a nicely doughy wrapper. The tofu pudding with ginger syrup - I'm usually not a big fan of this dessert, as the sweet level can get too subtle and all I'm eating is tofu, but they nailed the syrup to tofu ratio. I could've eaten a bowl of this myself (the highest compliment coming from me). The siumai with shrimp and mushrooms - Amazing mushroom flavor. The spare ribs were all right, a lot of gristle and fat, not a ton of meat. Egg tarts were similarly standard: you can get much better ones at any of the Chinese bakeries a stone's throw away. The fried pork buns needed some more of a golden crispy bottom. My least favorite by a mile was the cold garlic cucumber salad. Eating it, I could taste something a bit off with the cucumber, like it wasn't the freshest. My stomach was kind of gurgly and sour for the rest of the day but it also could have been any of the other things I ate. If I came back, the cucumber salad is the only thing I wouldn't get again. I liked that the service was a notch friendlier than the usual gruffness. The restrooms here had that stinky smell, that, if you've ever been to mainland China and used any restroom there, you know what I'm talking about. read more

We are visiting from NYC and all the reviews we read said this was the best restaurant for dimsum so we had to try it out. We ordered 3 dishes to go and the total came out to a little over $20. We got the spare ribs, chicken feet and beef rice noodles. The spare ribs were mediocre, chicken feet were standard but the beef rice noodles were delicious! What a huge difference from dimsum! I should've known not to come here for dinner since all the Yelp reviews only rave about the dimsum and there aren't much reviews on the dinner portion. We ordered 4 dishes and came out to over $120 before tip. Definitely on the pricier end! We ordered the peking pork chop, lobster with ginger and scallion, half a fried chicken and spinach. -The peking pork chop was terrible. The sauce was way too sweet and tasted very fishy. The pork chop didn't even taste like it was fried and the meat was very gamey. -The lobster with ginger and scallion was terrible too. The lobster was small but pretty meaty but it was lacking a lot of flavor. -The fried chicken was SO dry! It was inedible and hard as a rock. You can barely chew on the meat if there was even any to begin with. Picture for reference. -The spinach dish we requested was spinach in soup with salted egg yolk. We ended up getting the dish with century year old egg with crumbles of an egg yolk. Mediocre at best. The service during dinner was terrible too. I was told Boston Chinatown has delicious Chinese food and Hei La Moon did not disappoint. The XLB soup dumplings were piping hot for take out. I also highly recommend getting the shu mai. The staff were efficient and friendly at the front while I waited for my takeout. It was busy for President's day weekend but they made sure to be attentive and polite. The prices are especially good for a dine in dim sum place! If you are dining in, there are two floors of seating inside and it seemed they were very efficient at getting guests in. I've been meaning to check out Hei La Moon for a while, but honeslty, I'm much more of a fan of Dynasty. However, I will say Hei La Moon wins in terms of interior decor. I came here on a weekday for dinner and it was pretty empty. I'm guessing this is because they don't bring around the dim sum cart in the evenings. They also had a regular Chinese menu, but we just ordered the dim sum. We ordered a few dim sum items, but nothing in particular stood out to me. The steamed buns weren't quite as fluffy as I'd like them to be, but they were still solid, and the rice noodles were pretty standard. I'd never tried tripe before, so I have nothing to compare that dish against. Not sure I'd come back based on having had better dim sum elsewhere. read more

This place was recommended by my friend Natalie and her husband. The first time I came here was back in 2017 give or take and I've been coming back at least yearly since then. It was so good then and it's still good now. I make every effort I can to come here when I'm in Boston, to get my dim sum fix. It's just got everything you expect in a traditional dim sum place. A variety of dishes, check. A staff yelling at someone or about something, check. Asian Aunties and Uncles eating, check. I always order my staples such as siu mai, har gow, beef balls, chicken feet, and pork spare ribs in black bean sauce. I know what I like and I order the same thing and these dishes never fail me. Great place to bring a party to enjoy dim sum with plenty of seating available and an atmosphere that's not excessively busy even on the weekend. All the items I tried here were done fairly well, with all the dim sum favorites from char siu bao, sesame balls, egg tarts, siu mai, shrimp dumplings, and more covered. The portion sizes were quite good as well and the meat used was a little more on the fatty side which I prefer. I also like how in general each item was fairly warm, so that I got to enjoy the intended texture of each dish. I would give this dim sum location 3.5 stars if I could. First off, this place is HUGE - two large levels so plenty of seating. I think we waited less than 10 minutes on a busy Sunday afternoon to get seated. It was very packed and had a lot of non-Chinese patrons, though that isn't so surprising for Boston I suppose. I liked that they still have the traditional dim sum carts here, a rarity in dim sum places these days. Got to practice my Canto which was nice, though may be more difficult for the non-Chinese speaker to visit (I'd recommend going with someone who knows what to order). We got the standard fare: shumai, ha gao (shrimp dumpling), lotus leaf sticky race, some fried noodles and gai lan (a Chinese vegetable), turnip cake, and egg tarts. Everything tasted decent but not mind-blowing. The egg tarts had a strange smell that made them a little difficult to consume - not sure what that was about, probably would not order again. Service was good, we had to ask for ice water a couple times but not a big deal since we had the tea and there were a lot of people to serve. Note that this restaurant is in a new location inside a building that has a different name (Good Opera) in front. There's also a smaller shop inside that sells boba drinks (to go?). Not a bad place to grab dim sum, but there are other restaurants nearby that might be slightly better quality. read more

This is the restaurant you go to when you just want some reliable dim sum and a family style meal. We got a good variety -- shiu mai, har gao, seafood dim sum, pork and chive and more. We ended the meal with some of their egg tarts and split a coconut mochi and both were just the perfect textural bites. They weren't the best dim sums I've ever had, but they were pretty tasty (some of the pan fried skins were undercooked and the seafood dim sum skins were falling apart). I haven't been to Hei La Moon since 2016 when my family came for my graduation. And to my surprise they moved from their old location outside the gate! It was always a hit or miss, not with the food but with the service. I had a friend with his family visiting and expected it to be a big group of us so I chose for us to come here. I don't know if this was always a thing but they serve peeking duck and the server builds it up for you instead of yourself and I love that little detail. I had heard from several sources, those who'd been and those who hadn't, that there was dimsum still in Chinatown, but the best would be in Quincy. If I really wanted to venture into Chinatown, Hei La Moon would be the only place, and I totally get it. To be honest, I think their ha cheurng fun was even better than most places in New York, but I'm taking that to the grave. I haven't been here before, so I'm not sure if this place got a face lift during the pandemic, but it was a beautiful dimsum parlour with great art and light fixtures. I really appreciated that they still had dimsum ladies (or well, women) pushing carts around that reminded me of childhood. I also appreciated being able to speak my native tongue (Hoisan wah) and finding out that the owner is from the same village as my parents -- I would say it's a small world, but the Chinese diaspora has lots of patterns. The service here is somehow worse than regular dim sum service. The waitress seemed very annoyed that we asked for extra napkins. It's pretty spacious and has half a second floor for more seating. The food here is even more disappointing. You'd expect the dim sum in Chinatown to be good of all places. The texture of the chicken feet is not good. Do not be scared of a long wait, they have a big space and things work fast. You'll likely be seated within 30 minutes, if not less. While most items are fairly standard here, there were a few items different. Fu Pi Juan (tofu skin rolls) is a plainer in look and taste, much simpler. Service was TERRIBLE! This morning... Food was typical, nothing I need to go out of my way for . But the service was terrible I got called out for my 10% tip saying it was tooooo low ! First of all tipping isn't a requirement and they're service was less than average. No one was smiling, not once did they ask us if we needed anything. We were driving back from a quick trip and decided to swing by Boston area and found this place on google. We decided to try it based on photos and authenticity of the food we saw. It was indeed delicious. Carts came to our table as soon as we were seated. They were super nice and very attentive. We had loads of yummy shrimp filled dumplings, we had sticky rice rolls, the best stewed chicken feet that was super tender among other things. We loved our sesame balls and custard buns for dessert.
