I was looking for a dim sum place in Boston's chinatown and Hei La Moon continuously came up in my searches. I came here on a Sunday morning and waited about 15 minutes for a table of 2. We had our own table. There are tables downstairs and upstairs. I'm glad we were seated upstairs because I felt like there was more space between the tables and we still had the dim sum carts come by. We were able to order everything we wanted and did not feel like we were missing out on anything. We were immediately bought tea, without asking which type we wanted, but that was fine. There were a lot of people of all ages and ethnicities at Hei La Moon which was nice to see that dim sum is multi generational and across cultures. I ordered the typical dim sum dishes and everything tasted very fresh. The total for 10 dishes and tea was about $60. I can't wait to come back. The turnover of tables is pretty quick. My wife and I were looking for a change from seafood and Italian on our 3-night stay in Boston. Dim Sum seemed like a fun diversion and Boston has a cool Chinatown. Whenever I travel to a city with a Chinatown area, I always seek out Dim Sum. We have it regularly. With some help from fellow Yelper's reviews (although mixed), we landed at Hei La Moon for lunch. We arrived at around 12:45 on Thursday. The restaurant was pretty large and was about ¼ full. One of the servers sat us immediately at a table for two. The restaurant itself was very clean and spacious. A server came by quickly with tea and menus to order Dim Sum. No carts here, just order a la carte. Menu was pretty straightforward, with photos of many of the dishes, tying them to their corresponding number on the menu. We ordered the chive dumplings, shrimp hargow, pork shiu mai, beef ball, pan fried turnip cake, bean curd rolls and curry beef tripe. Here is my rundown on how we felt about each dish: Chive Dumplings: really tasty and chive forward. I love that taste, so it was a 5/5 for me. Shrimp Hargow: delicious. Their version is as good as any I've had. 5/5 Pork Shiu Mail: I usually couldn't care less about this one, because they usually are ho-hum. These were great! 5/5 Beef Ball: We don't usually order these and they were kind of uninteresting. Like a bland meatball. 3/5 Turnip Cake: Usually love these, but their version had an odd, kind of fishy taste to them. 3/5 Bean Curd Rolls: Loved these. Super flavorful with a light delicious sauce. 5/5 Curry Beef Tripe: This was a very tasty version of beef tripe. Light curry flavor. 4/5 Water was not offered but happily brought when asked for. Additionally, if you like hot chili oil or vinegar with your Dim Sum, you'll need to ask for that as well. Servers were always present, so you just need to flag someone down when you need something. Overall experience was really nice. We actually enjoyed it enough, that when we came back through Boston 10 days later, we came back for another round! Beautiful place for tapas style Dim Sum. If you want to try multiple items and wanted to try small portions. I highly recommend this place in Chinatown. The restaurant is open till 9:00 pm, however, the kitchen closes at 8:30 pm. If you are planning your dinner around 8ish, there are high chances that you might not get most of the items. I also like the way that the order sheet has a small picture of most of the items. So it is easy to relate and order. read more

Hei La Moon is always a good option for dim sum in Chinatown. Glad they moved locations to be right in Chinatown and took over the old Chow Chow City (RIP) building. We went on a Friday afternoon and it wasn't too busy. Most dishes were good, with my favorites being the chicken feet in black bean sauce and shrimp hargow. They give you a double sided menu where you mark what you want, then they bring the dishes to you. There are also some pictures of the items which is helpful. Service is ok. read more

Was really excited to check this place out, but didn't really live up to my expectations. Maybe they're too high, coming from the Bay Area, but I think the bar could have definitely been higher. They did not have quite a few standard dumplings available, not sure if it was a one off inventory issue or if they just don't have them on the menu--shrimp and chive dumplings for example. That doesn't seem right to me". He said yes and take our credit card. If there are 5 different sizes of dim sum (small, medium, large, xlarge and T size) why they are the same price?? Later, I said I wanted the receipt. First, a different lady came back and gave us a total money receipt. Then I asked for the itemized receipt and the paper that they circled our dishes. She came back with only the itemized one, when I already said I wanted both twice. Could we ask again? Yes we could, but that would be the third time and if they want to make it right, they would do it first hand. Keep in mind we tipped them disregard all of this disaster above. 3.5/5 overall! I've only been here once to get to-go for a snack of shrimp hargow and steamed "peach" buns for my friend's birthday. Hargow was 3/5 with the shell being nice and chewy but the filling being a little off to me given it was mini pieces of chopped shrimp inside instead of a full piece of meat. I love dim sum and Hei La Moon did not disappoint. This was my first time visiting in many years and I miss the old location. We got seated immediately and the carts were rolling. My dim sum knowledge is pretty mid and unfortunately if you don't know what you want, they keep moving. We just started pointing to things that looked familiar and most of it was hot and tasty. We got a couple trays that we didn't know what they were and did not enjoy. It's somewhat of a gamble if you choose something you dont like cause you still have to pay. Hei La Moon is definitely my go to place for dim sum in Chinatown. Although they can get very busy on the weekends, they are always able to seat us in a relatively speedy manner. We love that we can still experience the traditional cart style dim sum during the weekends and they have so many options to choose from! We always order their siu mai, rice rolls, har gao, and spareribs. I really enjoyed their chive dumplings and tofu pudding as well! Their dishes are pretty standard and consistent, which makes it a great everyday dim sum place. I do wish that they provide vinegar and chili sauce at every table instead of having to ask for them every time. Additionally, because the restaurant can get very busy during the weekends, it is sometimes hard to flag down staff for requests or to pay the bill. I went relatively early for dinner on a Monday night so service was quick but I can see this place getting extremely busy around peak dinner time. I usually don't care for Dim Sum, which is generally plain, bland, food that's usually overly salty, overly sweet & sugary, tons of starch, and sea food is their general vibe, but this had a mix of all kinds of things, that I could see myself returning again. I tend to prefer more Northern Chinese cuisine, and this actually had Northern stuff options. So, I was overall pretty happy, despite it being a Southern thing. My group of four decided to stop by for weekend dim sum, especially after hearing about this restaurant's popularity. The dining area is huge, which made indoor, distanced seating extremely simple. However, the service is very traditional -- the waiter will not help you unless you call for him and he almost seems cold. Even after speaking to the staff in Chinese (usually you get better service), my table was still generally ignored and we had to wave the staff down. There are no dim sum carts due to covid, and we ordered by filling out a menu. My group ordered the beef chow fun, scallion pancake, ha gow, turnip cake, egg custard buns, shu mai, steamed rice roll with fried dough, gai lan (broccoli), and egg tarts. My personal favorites were the egg tarts, steamed rice roll, and gai lan. The egg custard buns were also well-liked in my group. The portion sizes are big -- I've literally never seen a steamed rice roll so large at any dim sum restaurant. The ambiance is nice. They mostly played American music when I was there. Country and pop specifically. It's a really large place. It has two floors with a lot of seating on both. I recommend coming here with someone who knows how to speak Chinese or has dined here before. The restaurant is big and gets packed at peak times. Nicer ambiance than most good dim sum places, love the congee and that's the staple so it's important. In my opinion, the Chinese are right, you can only enjoy eating this sort of food if it's a celebration, and there has to be too much food so no one has to worry about eating the last piece. We decided to celebrate being in Boston. It's the third largest Chinatown on the mainland, and this was the first restaurant we walked by that had only Chinese looking people sitting down. It turns out from overhearing conversation that they were all Americans but the choice still turned out to be serendipitous. We were in on an off night so it wasn't busy and we didn't get the push carts but we did get prompt, accurate, and efficient service. My two favorites were the chive pocket ("excuse me, I speak Chive") and the non dim sum salt and pepper shell on shrimp (which one eats whole, head, tail, shell and all). Actually there were four other dishes I liked just as much but I can't remember what they were called which is what happens when I order by checking off boxes next to pictures. My go-to for cart-style dim sum in Chinatown right now. There's a parking lot right next to it, which is super convenient for Sunday brunch. This place gets PACKED, but service and wait time are fast. The bathroom is also clean too! Always a plus. Hei La Moon is one of the classic dim sum spots in Boston that I've been to loads of times, so it was a little sad to see a half-empty dining room when I stopped by for a late lunch on a Wednesday (and the basement floor was entirely dark! ) As with at many dim sum restaurants during the pandemic, we ordered on a paper menu rather than via the more traditional carts of food being pushed around the dining hall. We stumbled upon this while "walking while starving" fooled by the busyness of the restaurant we assumed this was a good spot to eat at since there were patrons galore...wrong. We were quickly seated with no instructions however being a millennial, i noticed the QR code on the table and scanned in. We came around 12:30pm on a Sunday. no one ever asked if we wanted to order from the menu items like lo mein, fried rice, etc. instead we were assumed to be here for the dim sum. the dim sum leaves MUCH to be desired like a warm (not even hot) temperature. out of the almost 6 things we ordered only two were warm enough to see faint steam. they place a tea kettle on your tables without your permission or ordering and charge you $1 or $2 per person at the table. it took someone 20 minutes to refill my water cup despite numerous people walking around with water pitchers. also, no one ever asked our drink order. when we left a tip that did not meet their liking we were harassed and bullied into tipping more despite informing them our our grievances with the lack luster service and food quality. would NOT recommend or return. read more
