The inside of the restaurant overall has a nice atmosphere, appears really clean. Was pretty empty on a Friday night though. Service was fast and the staff was friendly. However.....the food wasn't the greatest. Dumplings were severely overcooked and mushy, most had no flavor. Tried the soup dumplings, they weren't hot at all, pretty much room temperature. Dim sum that was not good: Soup dumplings: lacked flavor and broth was room temp and seemed stale Sesame balls: tiny, lacked sesame paste inside, no bounce or crunch when you bite into it Steamed pork buns: dry, lacked flavor and pork filling - seemed like they were frozen before. Reminded me of grocery store buns from the freezer aisle Shrimp rice noodle roll: super tiny and barely any filling and no flavor. I am so amazed by its quantity and taste of the items after an online order that i am so hooked. That being a good pick up line to grab your attention, lets go for the actual review. I have seen that mostly when you are placing an online order, the experience of eating at home is not as good as eating at a restaurant. That being said, we all are in the same situation since the covid-19 has started. Although, i can definitely say that this place makes sure that the packaging is good enough to recreate the same experience as in a restaurant as in an online delivery. I've said it before and I'll say it again. I hate Bryant "Bmac" M. Yeah, the Columbus Community Manager. Yesterday's lunch with him just gave me one more reason to hate on him. We had lunch together here, yesterday, at his recommendation. It's a "new to me" restaurant, so I was up for it. Long story short, I got some of the best Shrimp Phad Thai I've ever had. The portions were generous and the flavors were spot on. I wanted to go back again today. I'm craving their Phad Thai right now and in my book, that's Bryant's fault. Being Northern Chinese these folks specialize in dumplings / buns. He got the Chinese steamed buns and really enjoyed them. I can't remember the filling and I didn't partake, but Bryant's buns did look very interesting. As others have noted, the location used to be a strip club so there are more mirrors here than an amusement park fun house. Thankfully they took out the poles. There's a baby grand piano which looks totally out of place, that is until the owners husband starts playing. He's really good folks. I was told he also sings opera. So take strip club mirrors, a baby grand piano, an opera singing older Chinese guy playing piano, some really good flavorful food in a place right next to the freeway and you get a oddly cool restaurant that I just have to go back to way too soon. Disclaimer: I am a huge Chinese food snob. I was born in Toronto and my parents are from Hong Kong. I've grown up surrounded by authentic Chinese food. While living in Rochester, NY I would travel to Toronto frequently to satisfy my Chinese food cravings. However, now that i'm living in Columbus, Toronto is too far of a drive and authentic Chinese food is not as easily accessible. Time to look for viable Chinese food options in the Midwest. Challenge accepted! My friend XD recommended checking out Helen Asian Kitchen and it turned out to be a great recommendation. She helped to order in Mandarin during my initial visit. She ordered twice cooked pork, fish-fragrant eggplant and salted duck. I enjoyed all the dishes. The soft and sweet eggplant contrasted nicely with the spicy pork and crunchy celery. The flavors were authentic, well-balanced and subtle as opposed to the overly "sweet and sour" dishes you commonly find at other "Chinese" restaurants. The salted duck was the most interesting dish out of the three. It is served cold, so that may automatically dissuade the average American palate. It's also not recommended for people who dislike non-fried duck skin, which has a gelatinous quality to it. But for the adventurous, this dish is a great pick. The salt brings out the natural duck flavor. I visited again soon after and ordered the pork dumplings and the fish fragrant pork shreds (Yu Xiang Zhu Rou Si). Again, I enjoyed both dishes and the portions were huge. I ended up eating the leftovers for dinner later that day. An order dumplings came with 14 pieces. They came out with a great soft homemade wrapping. I'm spoiled by one particular dumpling shop in Toronto, so the dumplings were just okay. I thought the pork stuffing could have used a bit more herbs or spices. The fish fragrant pork shred dish was amazing. It's a little bit on the oily side, but that's how it's served traditionally. It's a Sichuan dish that's served with shredded pork, fungus (mushroom) and bamboo shoots mixed in with some red chili and vinegar sauce. This dish has sweet and sour components, but well-balanced and not overpoweringly so. Helen and her husband (I think?) are super friendly. They are proud of their dishes as they should be. Their food has been consistently good both times I have visited. They might be a little pricier than the average Chinese restaurant, but I'm happy to pay a small premium in exchange for quality food. I don't mind the semi-squalid ambiance of the restaurant either. It's all about the food and so far I keep going back for more. read more

Spicy stir fried cauliflower absolutely loves up to the hype. It has the perfect amount of mala spice and is incredibly filling for a vegetarian dish. I've never had a bad order from Helen's, but the cauliflower is what keeps me coming back again and again! read more

Stopped in with my wife. Heard so much about this spot on Yelp, facebook, google, etc. Had the place to ourselves at lunch today. Had a complimentary couple bites of appetizer. Ordered soup dumplings. They were cute little bite of yummy pork goodness , steamed. Temperature was very warm when we were popping them in our mouth. Also had Mongolian beef and rice. Very tasty and enough we both had some. Then came the stir fried cauliflower. Bubbling as it arrived at the table, it was very flavorful. My wife avoided the large pieces of hot chilies, and found the heat level nice. I at the big chunks with the dish and it was not too spicy for me. I do advise two or three side orders of rice...this is a great portion size of veggies... enough for 3 or 4 people. My wife had water and I had hot green tea to drink. This was a really nice experience! We tried the crab Rangoon and the general Tao shrimp. The Rangoon was very tasty, super creamy and in a classic triangle shaped wonton shell. The shrimp was also delicious, had a nice crisp on it and a very good size. Next time I would definitely order extra sauce, as the sauce had a very nice and rich flavor and complemented the shrimp and its breading very well. This is another placed I discovered through Yelp. In reading the reviews, I noticed that if you mention that this place used to be a strip club, you get mentioned in the highlights for this restaurant. Now I would think that this establishment would get tired of being associated with a strip club. I'm told that for a long time when you went into this place, you could tell that is used to be a strip club. As far as the fact that it used to be a strip club, that is somewhat significant to me as this is my neighborhood and I'm happy to see a new restaurant succeed this in this area. Now that I am in my second paragraph and have now mentioned strip club 5 times and even started talked about the food yet. Today I took my wife, daughter and grand daughter here. My wife mentioned that she went here with friends a while ago and you really could tell that it use to be a strip club (6). However, walking into today she said the place has been remodeled. I thought it looked great, and a bit different than any place else. Another thing I learned from the Yelp reviews is that first generation Chinese people really like this place and their "authentic" offerings. That seems to be their niche. However, they do have an "Americanized menu". When it comes to food, I don't care that much about authentic, I just know what I like. I can't help but feel like the Americanized menu is an insult, but it has the stuff I like. Frequently when I go to Chinese restaurants I start with the Americanized offerings such as General TSO to see if I like it and then branch out from there. In many Chinese restaurants they have a notion that American's can't handle "spicy". I laugh in their faces. Most of what they offer as "spicy" wouldn't qualify as mild this this former and retired Wing King . They did offer to make it "extra spicy" I ordered that with Brown Rice. My daughter ordered the Worsugi (sp). I was in the mood for a Cola, and asked if they had Coke or Pepsi and was told both. This means it comes in a can and no refills. They do give you a glass and ice. In the end, the food was good, the restaurant nice with an interesting décor. We will frequent this place and recommend it to anyone to help keep nice places in our neighborhood. I'll update more once I go back and try other dishes. read more

Really liked this place. We stopped in after going to a nearby climbing gym and were famished. They had plenty of vegetarian options for my wife, and some nice inventive dishes on top of the traditional Chinese restaurant fare. I went with the Salt N' Pepper shrimp, which paired nicely with the Ma Po Tofu (nice and gingery) and green beans that my wife got. The shrimp were huge and delicious - waiter was kind enough to explain I should eat them with the shell on still with the way they were cooked. Great meal and a great price. read more

One of my favorite asian restaurants in all of Columbus, tucked away in an unassuming spot behind a Waffle House. Don't let the location deter you because the food is so good! Helen's has been on my radar for so many years. I just never get to the north side much anymore, so I always forget about it existence.... until, I had a strong hankering for some Xiao long Bao (soup dumplings), which brought me to their doorstep. The place is one of those old dilapidated Hojos of the mid 20th century, but they've done their best to make it comfortable, and it was clean! Although Dim Sum was being served, which offered some delectable options like Siu Mai, and various fried dumplings and options, I was here on a mission. The service was good and friendly. The restaurant was completely empty, which was disappointing, but we came later for lunch, so perhaps we missed the Sunday rush. Anyways, lets get back to the dumplings. They were indeed delicious and made with love. I think I could only be completed swooned and woo-ed had they offered more options for fillings, but the basic filling they offer, is A-OK. These are the nice smaller variation and not the larger sized dumplings that can be offered. There's just a little bit of soup, so no self-napalm here! I was getting nervous that they were not going to offer the traditional dark vinegar and chili sauce, but my woes were soothed, and it was at the moment, I knew they were legit, and they weren't treating us like just a bunch of fat mid-westerners, but we did have to grab some chop sticks, as none were provided initially. This made my stomach so happy. I no longer need to travel hundreds of miles for a good xiao long bao. I have a nice little place in my neck of the woods. Super-Score!!!! read more

Bbq pork buns: tastedjust like a pork bun should taste but the filling, made mostly consists of sauce, fat and barely any actual meat. Shrimp and chive dumplings; saw a previous post from someone who said it tasted fishy. They were right....not that it tasted spoiled more so like they used dried shrimp to flavor it?? I ordered sweet and sour chicken and it seemed like the chicken had not been cooked, it did not appear or taste the way it would usually, and the sweet and sour sauce had to be rewarmed. My order was also incorrect. I had ordered steamed mixed vegetable and I received steamed boqchoy instead. I've ordered in the past and have had similar experience, but have given the benefit of the doubt that they must've been busy. This is the last time I'll give it a chance. Let's get this out in the open - yes, they are in a crazy location that looks totally sketchy and you might not want to leave nice things visible in your car. But you do want to go there anyway, because the food is awesome! Things to know: 1) They have multiple menus - get the one with the more authentic foods on it, you will be pleased. 2) The soup dumplings are very yummy, but they are hot, so let them cool off a bit and then eat in one bite - let it explode IN your mouth (and not on your shirt) 3) They have special "theme" nights - check them out if you want to do more than just eat (think: Karaoke!) It might take a bit longer for your meal, but just sit back and relax, have a sake or a beer while you wait (or a pot of hot tea). You can also order a few items at a time, if you aren't sure how much you want to eat. DH and I had a good variety of foods and I had leftovers enough for 2 more meals when we finished - I especially enjoyed my black mushroom dish and he had the bibimap without the spicy sauce. So if you want something a bit more authentic and a bit different, give them a shot. read more

After attending a Yelp event here I could not wait to come back and try it on my own. I got my favorite dish from the Yelp event the honey walnut shrimp. It was just as delicious as I remembered. The cantaloupe in the dish really goes well with the salty and sweet of the shrimp. Also got an order of the pork and soup dumplings. The soup dumplings were even better than I remembered. If you check in on Yelp you get a free order of crab rangoons also. I really enjoyed those as well. The restaurant is very clean and service was quick and friendly. Finding the restaurant can be a little confusing but once you do don't let the exterior deter you. It is really nice on the inside. There is a real pretty skylight in the middle of the dining area I wish I got a picture of. I will definitely be back. read more

I ordered from Uber eats some Chinese tonight. I literally did not eat my dinner. This has to be the most disgusting meal that's ever been presented to me. I ordered the honey walnut chicken expecting fried chicken covered in hot honey sauce with pieces of little walnuts throughout the entrée. What I got were pieces of fried chicken drenched in mayonnaise. Literally mayonnaise. When I called and complained they said I could come in and choose something else.Then I am pretty sure the manager told me that the honey sauce was supposed to be mayonnaise. We have heard tons of great things about Helen's Kitchen from friends, specifically about the vegetarian dishes and authentic cuisine. This trip we tried the King Pao Chicken, Xiao dumplings, and House Cantonese Pan Fried Noodles. All were delicious, and I was especially impressed with the noodle dish. The noodles and sauce were very flavorful without being overly greasy or heavy. The Kung Pao dish was just the right amount of spice also with delicious sauce but I would have liked a few more vegetables, which is why I docked one star. The dumplings were very good and we plan to go back to to try the other types as well as the cauliflower dish that everyone seems to rave about.
