The food was similar to what you've had in any local Chinese restaurant. The Columbus Reddit group had hyped this place so much that I was more than ready to be dazzled. Ordered it via Grubhub and was just not that impressed. It was okay, but nothing special. I decided maybe we needed to try it in person to get a better feel for it. The place was absolutely empty when we arrived and while we were there for lunch no other diners came in and nobody came in for carry out. Our waiter was definitely bored and not very helpful even though he asked if we'd been there before and was told no. He brought our meals out each one separately and our appetizer (which was ordered 5 minutes before our meals) after we'd already all gotten our meals. Not very professional. Ok the native has returned home. For those of you who started reading my reviews since last year, this foodie is back to it. For those of you who haven't, I'm an Ohioan who spent the better part of the last two years on the west coast. For me it's a real hard find when it comes to Asian food(try me I'm serious). I walked into Helen's just thinking about the typical Asian-type restaurant, the one with the general tso's and the pizza and the soft serve. Those are places that are great in their own right, but when you want authentic...They leave more to be desired. I am completely satisfied with the service provided at Helen's Asian restaurant. As much as the word "Szechuan" gets thrown around, I'm not sure I've ever really eaten the cuisine until today. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend checking out Helen's Asian Kitchen. The place is nothing fancy, but I didn't visit for the decor. The Chinese menu is great, because it has translated titles and many of the dishes have full-color photos to help one visualize what the dish actually is. I chose Spicy Boiled Beef -- I think -- and steamed white rice. Helen came by to warn me that it was spicy. The portion arrived and it was huge! Enough for my family to eat, except they don't enjoy spice like I do. It was spicy, but not too spicy for me -- not even close -- and not so spicy that it scorches the palate. In fact, I was surprised at the subtlety of flavor... It was a wonderful broth/gravy rich with celery, garlic and onion. The cuisine was a surprise and the restaurant was a surprise, thus the five-star review. It was a delight to stop for lunch on a weekday and hear smooth jazz tunes playing from their baby grand piano. The mirrors that line all the walls take you back to 1980s decor. On to more important things? Helen's dumplings. Yes, packed with seasoned pork. A juice explosion when u bite into em. Just the right amount of shabam makes her creations so good. I've taken Helen's dumpling class at The Commissary, so I've had her brick-and-mortar bookmarked for quite some time. I was so happy to finally check this spot out even if it was late on a Sunday. It's easy to miss this place, so just pretend like you're going to the Days Inn, and it will literally be in their parking lot. You can't miss the 'Grand Opening!' sign that's been up there for going on 4 years. It's not much to look at from the outside, and the inside isn't any better, but I guess you do what you gotta do when converting it from an old strip club. I can't say we had any issues with the service here, but we were one of two tables by the time we got our food. They seemed to be fine with getting us refills. The Xiao Long Bao will take awhile to come out, so put the order in early. We did, and it still came out well after our entrees. We ended up grabbing an order of the crab rangoon, but you could probably pass on that unless you're really craving it. It's not going to blow your mind. As for main entrees, I went with the Sichuan Dry Fried Beef, and the girlfriend had the Pork in Garlic Sauce. Both were deemed 'Spicy' on the menu, but the pork wasn't too bad at all. It was delicious though, and they give you a ton of it! The garlic sauce was addicting, and I had to keep myself from eating her whole meal before mine came out. The lady warned me that the dry fried beef was spicy, and it does look intimidating when it comes out, covered in red chiles and Sichuan peppercorns, but it didn't light my mouth on fire. The flavor was fantastic, and it reminded me a lot of Chongqing chicken. The guy behind us must have heard me say it wasn't too bad in the heat scale, because he claimed his mouth was burning up, so I guess it all just depends on the person. I will say there were definitely pockets of heat that will numb your mouth, and that's exactly what I was looking for. The little slices of mixed throughout only upped the taste of the dish. I'd order this again in a heartbeat. We were pretty full by the time the Xiao Long Bao came out, but we managed to muscle them down (They give you about 8-10, but they're pretty small). I didn't think they were that great, and my girlfriend was a bit disappointed in the lack of broth in quite a few of them. This place may have a reputation for soup dumplings, but you should honestly come for the rest of the Sichuan dishes, because they're delicious! The pricing might seem a little high at first glance, but the portions are large, and the care put into the food doesn't get much better, so it's totally worth it. Everything I said in my previous review still stands, but I'm dropping two stars because the service that I've gotten during my last two visits was a combination of incredibly obnoxious and inconsiderate. During one of those times, the owner kept insisting to me that I was Korean. Normally, that wouldn't have been a big deal, but he continued to call me that even after I (a) corrected him, and (b) did so in Mandarin. Also, I am literally made in China (born there, got the fob shot for proof), so don't try to tell me what nationality I am. To be fair, that in itself wouldn't have bothered me enough for me to lower my rating. Rather, I'm doing it because of what transpired during my most recent visit. We had ordered three dishes, and the third dish took *forever* to come out. As in, the first two plates came out, and we were completely finished with those two (and already full) for over 10 minutes by the time the third dish came out. What was the reason, you ask? Is this a complicated dish that takes over half an hour to cook? NO. Apparently, the only person who knew how to make this dish was the owner, and he wasn't at the store at the time. So, rather than letting us know that we would have to wait a while if we wanted this dish, they just let us sit there. And wait. And wonder where on earth our food was. They also acted as if it was the most natural thing in the world to make us wait an extra 20-25 minutes for one of our orders. This is the definition of poor customer service. The dish itself was decent, but nowhere even near worth the wait. It was a tofu soup! Making it probably took less than 10 minutes. I would've rather ordered something else (or not gotten anything at all) than had to wait for so long. For all you naysayers out there who argue that legit Chinese restaurants aren't known for their service, I contend that they're not known for *attentive* service. They won't be checking in on you to see how you're doing or if you need a refill or water, but they will give you very fast service. All I want is to order my food and have it served in a reasonable amount of time (which has always been the case at other good Chinese restaurants). Anything that takes longer than 30 minutes to come out (especially for a reason as poor as "the only person who knows how to make it isn't here yet"), I expect to be TOLD of that circumstance. In honesty, I probably will be back next time I want Chinese food because the food quality has been consistently solid every time, but I'm going to inquire very closely about their ability to bring me my food in an acceptable amount of time. Helen's is directly behind the Waffle House. I think there used to be a Go-Go bar there. A chinese restaurant has got to be a heck of an improvement. And Helen is doing all the right things when it comes to getting new business. She even recognized my voice from my earlier phone call The restaurant is very nice, with Chinese lanterns hung everywhere and the reading section up front. As for the food, I started off with a bowl of wonton soup. That was followed by an order of spicy wontons. And I mean they were SPICY!! My last course was a pair of egg rolls. And we absolutely loved Helen's husband playing piano and singing Italian operas. He's VERY good, and we loved the blending of unexpected entertainment with letting him share his art and passion. Helen, the owner of Helen's Asian Kitchen, is from Northern China, so it's really no surprise she makes a mean dumpling. That's what Northerners are known for. They're the equal of Ying's (see my review), although they're a tad less rustic as befits a dumpling coming from the area outside of Beijing. To be clear, I'm referring to the steamed dumplings, not the xiao long bao (soup dumplings), which I do not recommend. Recently, she's also branched into Sichuan cuisine. "Best in town!" the waiter bragged (which is no small feat given that Imperial Garden and Fortune already produce pretty stellar Sichuan food). But I have to admit, he was right. We had a couple standards - chicken stir-fried with chili peppers, and ma po tofu - and a new dish, dry-fried cauliflower. They were all excellent, renditions equal to what I've eaten in Sichuan. The one problem is currently the menu is only in Chinese. I've translated it and posted it to the photos section of Yelp; see my photos. This is seriously one of my favorite spots in Columbus. Helen and her husband are super nice. She remembers my face and asks me where I have been if there is too much time between visits. I love that. I was so lucky to have been there for lunch one day when her husband took to the piano in the middle of the restaurant. Wow - he played and sang so beautifully. I will forever remember how wonderful that experience made one of my first visits here. The food is incredible. Period. The hot and sour soup is the best I have had anywhere. They have soup dumplings - as well as a large variety of other types of dumplings. All so so good. Crab ragoons are yum. They have a serious menu (or two) full of options - everything I have had is great. Pad Thai is my all time favorite - do yourself a favor and try it. I mean it - you won't be sorry. Okay, so my rating may not be fair because I used a food delivery service and didn't get a chance to actually dine in the restaurant to experience freshly-made-to-the-table food. With that being said, we ordered the Mongolian beef and an order dumplings. I mean, if you see a restaurant offering fresh, hand made dumplings...you're going to try it! Right? Am I right? Maybe it's just me...okay, let's move on...the dumplings were pretty good. The meat to dough ratio was nice. They were too chewy, or undercooked. The Mongolian beef had a nice grilled flavoring and the rice was a bit too dry for my taste. Sadly, my husband got a headache after eating his meal. I know if you go to a restaurant, you'll see (or you should see) which items have MSG in them. I don't know WHY this is still a substance allowed in food. Now, before you go jumping down my throat (which I'd only prefer if you had dumplings with you, and only maybe then), I'm not saying they use MSG. CarryOut Order: Decided to try this place out for dinner tonight. I've seen a few Yelp buddies try here and figured, why not? First I will say the food is made fast and very fresh. There is no sitting around waiting for orders and that is something I appreciate. We ordered the Mongolian Beef and Sesame Chicken. I also had the Chicken Egg Roll. I loved the flavor of the beef. I've never had it before. I was not a fan of the excess of onion, my mom loved that touch though. The chicken was nothing special. It tastes just as any other that I have tried. The Egg Roll was a complete miss. Lastly, I ordered a Coke. I think it is absolutely insane to charge $1.99 for a cup of coke and fill it literally half way up with ice. Yum, yum, yum. Helen's Asian Kitchen is by far the best Chinese restaurant in Columbus that is located in a former strip club. Indeed, if I may be so bold, it's the best Chinese restaurant located in a former strip club ANYWHERE. The first thing that anyone who has visited Helen's will tell you to get is their dumplings. We've never had a bad one, but if you can get only one style make sure to try the soup dumplings. Filled with delicious broth, they require a bite-and-slurp when eating. Otherwise, you're apt to get hot delicious juice all over the place. Once you try them, you'll understand why people eagerly sign up for Helen's dumpling making classes at The Commissary. The dishes off the "Chinese menu" (as opposed to the "American" one) are also top notch. They have some really great Sichuan entrees. If you're craving that numbing mala sensation, definitely get the cauliflower dish or the chicken and chili peppers (note, there are two chicken and pepper entrees. One has bone-in chicken pieces. So double check to make sure you're getting the one that you want.) We also like the pork in garlic sauce, it's a nice mild compliment to the spicier options. Finally, we've had great service at Helen's as well. They've always patiently walked us through the menu options and explained dishes when the names haven't been enough to give us an idea of what they'd be like. Stopped by this location last minute on a Saturday afternoon. We were the first to arrive which was fine with us. The restaurant is a little hard to find tucked away behind a Waffle House and in front of a Super 8 hotel. Nevertheless, we were quite surprised when we entered. It was extremely clean and nicely appointed... very nice upscale decor. We ate at the bar. There was an older gentleman running the whole place. Did pickup with patrons after a bit. We ordered the egg drop soup. It was so good. Also had the spicy cauliflower and hot fish. Boy were they both scrumptious. We will be back again. Thanks to Yelp, I found this place for dinner. Otherwise, I would never have gone here. It is is a weird location that looks a little shady. The restaurant is a little strange inside too. I am a fan though as the food is authentic Chinese and made right. I would be a regular if I lived in Columbus. The service was quirky but I was very happy with the pork and pickled radish soup. It hit the spot. Had I had company, I would have ordered some dumplings too and other dishes. The soup was very filling though and I had no room for anything else. It set me back 8.95 for a big bowl. Have had takeout twice from here. Sometime I need to come back with friends and see how things are, fresh out of the kitchen. First time - the xiao long bao are very tasty and live up to the hype, even after ~20 minutes in the car on the way home. 2nd dish was the cumin beef, which was basically beef and a ton of onions in a bath of fairly unimpressive brown sauce. Honestly, I couldn't taste much cumin. 2nd time - I looked more carefully at the menu and the pictures available (I prefer a "drier" entree) and picked the cilantro pork and the hot pepper chicken. Both much better than my first experience. The cilantro pork is bright and nicely spiced, but I felt like there wasn't much depth to the flavor. The hot pepper chicken was great - lots of ginger in there, adding to the flavor. Thick slices of fresh garlic, somehow miraculously sweet despite not having been cooked very long... that's a neat trick. LOTS of hot peppers in both, and this isn't the kind of place that says "would you like your dish that is clearly marked 'spicy' to be mild, medium, or hot?" Waiter didn't speak English hardly at all, we had to point to order, and if we had a question, that didn't really work either. Lemonade tasted like water with food coloring. I'll use my catchphrase, "good not great." I had a lunch combo: egg roll, egg drop soup, Mongolian beef. I know, I should have explored the menu more, but I was in a hurry and just wanted to get a baseline. I'll go back for more authentic dishes. All of my items were fine, just not stellar. This has quickly become my go to place for authentic Chinese food and whenever I'm in that mood I order a little bit too much. But almost everything I have ordered here has been great, and knowing that a majority of the food is made from scratch is another reason I come back, also it's very convenient to where I live. A tip to anyone that doesn't know make sure to order from the traditional Chinese menu because most of the great dishes are on this menu. For appetizers I've had the Spicy Wontons and Sichuan dumplings, both are great but if I would pick a favorite I would go with the Sichuan dumplings. The scallion pancakes are a nice little snack and made fresh. For entrees I first had the Hot Pepper Beef and I was expecting a sort of chili pepper heat and instead the peppercorn was too strong but not in a bad way. The pork pan fried noodles are tasty and not greasy and enough food to feed two. The Ma Po Tofu was a spicy and the tofu was a nice changeup to my carnivorous ways, but I don't know if the dish is better or worse than other places because it was my first time ordering it. One of the best dishes is the Hot Pepper Fish, the light tasting fish was well seasoned and spiced but still balanced. Now the star of Helen's is the Xiao Long Bao, order it every chance you get and you will not be disappointed. The food here is really good. I've only been here once but I was impressed with the quality of all the dishes we ordered! We ordered some apps but my favorites were the entrees: -Crispy Salt and pepper prawns: Huge fried prawns (be warned, the heads are still attached). Frying the prawns makes the shells crunchy and delicious! -Honey walnut shrimp: Jumbo shrimp with a thick and sweet honey sauce. Similar to coconut shrimp I've had at other places. -Stir-fried Eggplant: Yum. The sauce on this dish was really good. Must try. -Three cup chicken (off of the Chinese menu): A classic dish with a sauce made of only 3 ingredients (soy sauce, rice wine, and sesame oil). Very tasty but comes with bones in the chicken pieces. -Boiled fish in chili soup: Very spicy broth but the boiled fish is so so delicious! I'm not sure why this place was empty during lunch on a Saturday although I did see people picking up to-go orders. Our group left feeling so happy and satisfied. This place is really yummy. The food was way less greasy and tasted much fresher than your average Chinese takeout joint. The mala string beans were crispy and flavorful, although not as spicy as I would have liked. The wonton soup was very good, too-the broth was delicious. My husband loved the veggie lo mein. I wasn't that crazy about the fried rice that came with the lunch special. It looked like brown rice with tiny pieces of egg and was bland. The xiaolongbao, while tasty, wasn't what I expected. They were the smallest xlb I've ever had and not very soup-y. Plus, these were the most expensive xlb I've ever had ($9.95) but I believe Helen's is the only restaurant in Cbus that makes xlb, so you're paying for the uniqueness, I guess. read more

After countless recommendations, finally made it to Helen's (Helen?) Asian Kitchen. I went during lunch and the place was fairly empty. It's quite obvious that the location used to be a "gentleman's club" as there are mirrors everywhere and a giant ceiling where the stripper pole used to be located, pretty funny. Helen herself was our server, she was quite nice. I ordered one of the lunch specials, a simple fried rice/meat combination. It was decent enough, not bad, but definitely not a great tasting dish. I would best describe it as 'bland' or flavorless, at least compared to what I was expecting. I got a side of their hot/sour soup and an egg roll, both were pretty good. Came for the Xiao Long Bao, stayed for the amazing food. This place is a hidden gem and is best for sharing a bunch of different dishes with friends. The highlight of our meal was the sliced beef combo in chili oil. We ended up getting two! My other favorite was the hot pepper chicken. Came here on a late Sunday evening. We were the only ones in the entire restaurant. It is a bit out of the way and google map took us to some random location initially, but we were able to find it okay. They have a regular American Chinese menu and a separate Chinese menu. We ordered from the Chinese menu, which had a good selection of dishes. We got pork dumplings (good, not great), the garlic vegetables (outstanding!), the boiled beef in oil (good), and the twice cooked pork (very good). All in all an excellent meal, and lots of food. The ambience is not terrific, but not bad either. The main attraction is clearly the food and Helen's Asian kitchen clearly delivers the goods. Helen, the owner and server came and sat next to us after our meal was ordered. She seemed tired when we walked in and initially we weren't sure if she would send us on our way, but she warmed up pretty quickly and had a nice chat with us. In the end, much to our surprise, she even gave us a dish of General Tso's chicken that someone had ordered to go, and didn't bother coming to pick up. We are visiting from out of town. This place was in the parking lot of our hotel. The place is nice and clean; the menus are AWESOME! The food is kind of pricey, but you get a ton of it, so it is worth it. The food was delicious! My friend didn't like his food. Helen stopped by our table, and after discovering that, she replaced it with something else. She was very attentive and kind. Wonderful place!!! read more

The location is pretty sketchy, and not easy to find, but I was expecting that going in. The interior looks kinda dated and the decor was lackluster, but again, I expected that from the online reviews. We were greeted immediately when we walked in, very friendly staff, but the service was lacking. It was a Saturday night, but not that busy. As far as the food, I was really looking forward to the Xiao Long Bao (soup dumplings), but they were our least favorite! They had NO SOUP inside. The meat filling was ok though, and we were so hungry already, so we ate them anyway. The Shu Mai were pretty good, but not great. Still better than the "no soup" dumplings. We also ordered the beef with rice noodles, and that was our favorite! Great flavor, the noodles tasted homemade and fresh. Lastly, we had the Scallion Pancake, which was pretty standard, but good. I've seen some great pics on Instagram and great reviews, and I was so excited to finally try this place, but I'm not sure if I'll be back. read more

Screw the negative reviews, this place SLAPS. from the basic ass American Chinese food like general tso chicken to things that seem to be a little bit more traditional everything was really yummy. Except for the wonton soup, that needed more seasoning. They use real vegetables like leeks and I really like leeks so I might be biased to this place. The food didn't feel too greasy and the sauces are pretty good. General tso chicken is my go-to when I'm sick, and I haven't been a fan of any place I've gone to except for here. We even ate the leftovers the next day and we never eat the leftovers. They have these awesome balls that are covered in sesame seeds and have red bean stuff inside of them and they're really good.
