So I am only giving this place one star (for now) I was looking for a soul food place to go to, an since I wasn't in B'more I could go to angies soul food. They did not have more half of their menu; the lady did suggest trying their other store in MD, but it was over 40 miles away, since I was in DC in the middle of the afternoon. I would swear this was a laundromat or check cashing place from the outside. It has only counter seating by the front window and we ate in. It was good. I get beef ribs every chance I get since they aren't common where I'm from. Theirs were tender, slow cooked, and slathered in sweet barbecue sauce with sliced bread on the side. Good flavor, though I don't think these ribs were smoked as someone else said, given the color, flavor, and texture of the outside. They were satisfying either way! Sides: Greens were flavorful and not mushy. They actually felt healthy! The cornbread stuffing with gravy was well seasoned though sweeter than I'm used to. They clearly use their own baked cornbread. Dessert: Mmm. Banana pudding. You expect Nilla Wafers, but this was almost like bits of cake. I was into it. Portions at this place are insane. BBQ ribs have pleasant smoke flavor, potato salad is right in there, and mac 'n cheese is old-school good. The sweet potato pie is widely known--it's smooth and layered with flavor. There's a huge photo of Henry holding his famous sweet potato pie on one of the shop's walls. What a thoughtful homage to him. Staff is friendly. There's very limited seating; always get mine to go. Open on time or put signs up to say why you are not opening. Arrived at 11:15 to find it dark and doors locked. Sign says they open at 11. Waited to see for any activity and saw someone moving around but still not opening. Saw several people come up to pick up orders and eventually leave. About 11:45 an employee knocked on kitchen window and they let her in. During this time saw them taking food orders to a container. I try to support black owned businesses but with all the ways to communicate and they don't have the decency to let their customers know why they are not opening? Amazing!!!!!!! I came here yesterday after the zoo and ordered lunch with my boyfriend. We haven't found many good Soul Food restaurants in VA, so this was pretty exciting to find. My boyfriend ordered Fried trout with mashed potatoes and collard greens. I'm not much of a fish Easter, but this was very delicious. Lightly crispy and seasoned to perfection. The sides were amazing. I ordered the half chicken friend with macaroni and green beans. I took one bite and instantly told my boyfriend i wanted to order another dish for dinner. We ordered the 2 pork chops with yams and cabbage, and a slice of sweet potato pie. This place is amazing and I was so happy to find such a little gem. Everything is amazing and delicious even that strawberry lemonade. There was an issue with a customer getting their food before another customer that came in first BUT the woman behind the counter handled the situation very well while the customer was super upset. I had a craving for some good fried chicken. I spent 1.5 hours researching various places around my location in DC. I kept going back-and-forth between recommendations and even went to some other websites to find a good place. Henry's had good reviews and was within a half an hour walk from my location so I decided to give it a try. It's sort of out-of-the-way, definitely not in a touristy area. It's a super small shop with a very small waiting area with a few counter stools. Staff is friendly and efficient. The menu was simple and included some seafood and ribs as well as fried chicken. Their menu also included desserts including peach cobbler, sweet potato pie, and more. After I ordered my chicken I noticed a lot of folks coming in ordering the whiting fish. That must be super popular. It looked to be like mostly locals ordering so I felt like I'd made a good choice. I ordered six chicken wings and peach cobbler. It came with cornbread. Everything was delicious. The chicken was not greasy at all. They offer you hot sauce and a special sauce that's a bit sweet and spicy. I used both. I ate every bit. One my favorite parts of the meal was the cobbler. It had a delicious ginger flavor and lots of dough. It was probably the best I've ever had, including my own cobbler which is really good. Desserts were sweet potato pie and banana pudding. We all agree collectively that the food was alright. 3*'s is a the best they will get from our group. The ribs were ok, they were tender but it seemed like the were cooked in the oven. The catfish and chicken was tasty. It was seasoned and fried well. The collard greens and cabbage were seasoned and just ok. The Mac & cheese was a little salty and it seemed like they used a liquid cheese sauce. It most definitely didn't have the extra melted cheese on top. Most of us ate a little and tossed out the rest. Now those yams taste like they were from the can. They hooked them up tho. The Coleslaw, Cajun fries, and cornbread were ok, nothing to scream about. We all agree that the lemonade didn't have enough lemon in it. It wasn't tasty at all. Delicious, I think my mouth started watering just thinking about the meal I got a few months back. For starters, the portions are huge for a $12 plate (you got breakfast and lunch in 1 plate), so we're off to a great start. I came in during a random time of day somewhere between 4-4:30pm and only 1 other person came in so this might be the time to come in. The fried chicken pieces are big and tasty, the potato salad got the right amount of acidic and salty, and man, that mac n cheese could be a meal on it's own! I wish I had also bought a sweet potato pie since I am sure it would have been damn good, (and the shop says they have the best sweet potato pie so why wouldn't you want to try it), but next time I am town I will definitely get a pie for sure! I am a white Jew from L.A., and with that comes, shall we say, "standardized' expectations of what food is "appropriate" for a wedding. My husband and I were visiting from RI and I found Henry's on my yelp app. We love mom and pop places, and this was so worth the visit. The food was absolutely amazing, the plates were loaded with food. I had the smothered pork chops and my BF had the meatloaf dinners - the servings size are generous (comes with two sides of your choice and a cornbread). Fantastic! I would give this place 10/5 stars if I can! I found it on Yelp so I could get some great soul food to celebrate Juneteenth and black people in June. I ordered the fried chicken, Mac and cheese and yams. The meal came with a biscuit as well that was so warm and soft. When I say it hit the spot, that's an understatement. The chicken was so crispy and flaky, the Mac and cheese was creamy and delicious, and the yams were so great as well. I had enough chicken leftover for a second meal the next day. I also got the sweet potato pie that was so warm and reheated well during the next few days. I learned that when I couldn't place an online order or get through on the telephone. Instead, I walked over and placed three orders of fried chicken and an order of turkey. We had a mix of sides: mashed potatoes, candied yams, soul fries, cornbread stuffing, and mac and cheese. Everything was deliciously home made and hot, which I really appreciate, even on a scorching day like last Friday. The fried chicken had a wonderfully crispy but not top of the mouth scratchy texture. It's juicy and steaming on the inside. We also ordered two servings of banana cream pudding - very good and fulfilling. In fact, next time, we really don't need that much but it's great because we had leftovers for days. I was craving soul food and Henry's was the first to pop up so I tried it. I gave them a call and placed my order in advance in case they were busy. As soon as I arrived, I realized how difficult it is to park in this area and would recommend you to come with an extra person or park across the street w/ your emergency signals on. For the exterior, it looked like Henry's had a lot of history as the decor was slightly on the vintage side. Once I walked in, I was greeted by one of the employees whom I thought was pretty nice for the most part. I provided her my name and took my order home. My order consisted of half fried chicken, collard greens, potato salad, and macaroni + cheese. The chicken has a good crisp to it and still managed to be juicy at the same time. The collard greens was delicious and seasoned well. The potato salad seemed like it was over cooked and drowned in Mayo so I didn't enjoy it much. The macaroni and cheese wasn't that great either as it was mushy, loaded with black pepper, and lacked in the cheesiness like most Mac. With every order, they provide a complimentary cornbread which was a bit too dry so I didn't finish it. I should also mention that they're mostly takeout but they do have a few bar seatings inside and two table outside of you choose to dine there. read more

Vacationing from Philly and wanted to try some good soul food read the reviews on Yelp and from the reviews seemed like a great place to try. Ordered the rib platter with Mac and cheese and sweet potatoes with a side of greens and sweet potato pie for desert, after we paid we was informed they didn't have any sweet potatoes, disappointed but ok. Not an eat place so took back to hotel smelled good but flavor was not there at all. Greens and cabbage had no flavor, mac and cheese was subpar,ribs where drenched in bbq sauce figured out why they were burnt, hard and not edible. I had the fried half chicken which came with a breast, thigh, wing, and drumstick. The chicken was fried perfectly; very crispy but so juicy on the inside. The meal came with two sides. I did the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. This is it! Fantastic food made to order. Friendly staff. No where to really sit except at the window. Food was in a styrofoam tray. The plate also came with cornbread which was very moist. I tasted the mac n cheese which was amazing and seasoned well. I also tasted the ribs; the sauce was amazing! The banana pudding was great; it had the wafers, pudding and small bits of real banana (not brown). Parking is horrible but that's expected on U Street. Ive eating from here on numerous occasions and was always satisfied with the food but today (Sunday 9/10/23) I got the worst meal I've ever had! My boyfriend and I were strolling down U street on a Saturday morning looking for a cheap spot to eat lunch. All we saw was gentrified, over-priced restaurants until we stumbled upon Henry's. My boyfriend, who went to Howard, remembered it from back in the day and we decided to walk in. The interior is very unassuming and has a few seats by the window to sit down. Our host, Gwen, was incredibly sweet and patient as we perused the menu. We ended up getting fried chicken and the turkey wing dinner which comes with stuffing, gravy, and two sides. We ordered mac and cheese and greens as our sides. You can't find turkey wings at just any spot on U Street. And let me tell you, these turkey wings were succulent and falling off the bone! The gravy was rich and thick - everything you want gravy to be. The stuffing only complimented the gravy and wings. The fried chicken was the BEST damn fried chicken I've ever had and I'm from the South. The breading was crisp and crunchy and the meat inside was tender and juicy. I highly recommending ordering the fried chicken if you come by. The mac and cheese tasted like grandma's mac. The collared greens were so good I don't want to attempt to make my own ever because they will be nothing compared to Henry's. Overall, between the low prices, delicious food, and friendly atmosphere,we definitely will come back to try their famous Sweet Potato Pie as well as the rest of their menu. When I tell you I am so happy I ate here for lunch!! the portion sizes are great, the flavor is great, and their hospitality was southern! The only negatives I have are, the restaurant signage deserves to be more prevalent, I almost drove past it if it wasn't for the illegally parked cars waiting outside lol. I didn't think I would be in the mood for food at Henry's. And then I saw beef liver and pig feet on the menu and ended up lugging around a second takeout box for the rest of the night. Yup. Not my brightest moment. I went with the oinker toes with cornbread, fried okra, and mashed potatoes. I contemplated the cobbler, but rationalized that if I couldn't fathom eating lots of real food, I may as well skip the extra sugar. I reveled in this decision after seeing the frowny lines on Justin C and Mrs. D's faces at both the hot and cold versions. I tasted everything while it was fresh to pass fair judgement, and shared my leftovers with my pops. Cornbread: on the dry side, with a reasonable amount of crumb. The flavor was alright, but I prefer a moister texture. Let's say two and a half stars for this since some of this is personal taste. Fried okra: nice popper size, no slime at all, but bland. You taste the batter way more than the vegetable itself, which just tastes like fryer oil. One star flavor disguised in three star technical execution. Mashed potatoes: the gravy was the only thing keeping this from dropping below two stars, and that wasn't particularly great either. The potatoes needed seasoning-- salt and pepper at the very least if you're going to skip the butter. Pig feet: yum. Piping hot, it was the right amount of sticky gelatinousness that afterwards made my fingers look like I'd been sneaking some selfy-selfy. As leftovers, all the good texture was still there, with enough moisture retained in the fat to keep the skin from turning to leather. Most of the exposed marrow had seeped out during cooking and I encountered a shard or two of bay leaf in the nooks and cranies, but neither observation keeps this menu item from an easy four stars. Come on, I'm snarfing this down facing the street, do I look like I mind? Even my da was impressed. "Really? You didn't get this from Asian deli? Wow." Service attitudes ranged from efficient to terse, but I'd probably sound like that if I was working inside a wall of oily air without goggles on. I guess when you're a grab-and-go counter you don't worry about those standards as much as you should... but maybe invest in a doorstop for your own health? The plastic chair outside is a fairly random gesture. The space in front of the registers is scant room for the formation of a line that most but not all regulars respect. I'll come back for the trotters again, but after reading other reviews my only deviation from the plan will be an attempt at their fried chicken. And seriously, out of 49 other reviewers no one tried the liver? I guess I'll have to pioneer that on my next trip. read more
