Great evening outdoors. The children played while the adults visited over a delicious meal. We also enjoyed the live music.

It had been awhile since we went here for dinner. We usually go for breakfast. I love their breakfast tacos and haven't had a problem when we go in the morning. Tonight, however, was different. The hostess was super sweet. Sat us really quickly and there were not a ton of people around us, which I was super appreciative for. I had an emotionally hard day, and I ordered a glass of wine which was on special. The bartender brought an open bottle of beer and set it in front of me. Ok, honest mistake. Maybe she was training, maybe she read the ticket wrong... who knows. Things happen. I work in the industry, I totally get it, I wasn't mad at all. My husband was going to order a bottle of beer with his meal anyway so he offered to keep the one they brought on accident. Problem solved, everyone was happy, it so was not a huge deal. What got me about the incident is that the waitress talked smack about the bartender to us after everything got straightened out!!!! Who does that??? The bartender must have overheard the waitress and came back to apologize and interrupted the waitress to do so. Probably because the waitress was talking crap to us about her. In front of her. I excuse myself to go to the restroom, and the restroom is a hot mess. There is a sign in the bathroom that a renovation will be starting soon, and thank goodness for that. I turned the hot water on, got the soap, and when ran my hands back under the water I almost scalded myself. Their hot water heater is on point! The meal was ok, I've had better from them before. The tacos were wet, almost like the lettuce and tomatoes weren't drained before they were put on the tacos. They tasted ok, but they were super messy and hard to eat. The same waitress from earlier got my to go box, left to get the check and when she came back with it, she dropped it off on the table and said "Can you believe all that sh*t that went down in Orlando? Can't believe the government is trying to take our guns..." and walked away. While I will not go down the rabbit hole on that loaded political statement, this was neither the time nor the place to bring up politics (because doing that with strangers is never a bad idea...) AND you use a curse word to your table. I promise you, I swear like a sailor at home. Curse words don't offend me, but I definitely don't use them around guests at my place of business and I expect the same courtesy from a waitress in the same industry. We thought about not tipping her, but we also understand that sometimes tips go to the hostesses and other staff. In retrospect I should have tipped the bartender and hostess directly and circumvented the waitress. The manager, who was also really friendly, was bussing tables and running orders. We should have told him about our waitress as well. It seemed like we just got the bad apple, and man was she rotten. read more

Horrible service. We were not welcomed when entering and sat ourselves. We waited for 15-20 minutes without anyone acknowledging my family, so we picked up and left. We've heard of the poor service here and that's exactly what we got. Lesson learned. read more

This is my favorite place to eat. Excellent cheese enchiladas and guacamole chalupas and beef fajita quesadillas!

Just so-so. If you want great Mexican food, go across the street to Las Fontanas. Hard taco shells were bland and pretty much non edible. Stuffed Chile relleno was good, but rice and beans uneventful. A positive is that when they have live music on the deck, it is a nice place to be. We came here on a Sat morning on our way to the Austin airport. I ordered a two hard taco with beans and rice dish for breakfast. It was good. The customer service was fine. The salsa is a bit spicy. Honestly, nothing great about this restaurant as there are many great ones in So CA. read more

Herbert's is the best! One of my favorite spots, both the New Braunfels and San Marcos locations are awesome. The staff is quick and friendly, so is the kitchen. I try something new every visit and I haven't found anything I don't like yet. The margaritas are delicious and the cold beer is reasonably priced. I will never eat at Herberts again or recommend it to anyone. Granted my spouse did make a mistake in his order but to be charged for two orders is absolutely wrong. Food was good, very tender beef. Salsa bland- I like more spice. Waiter was very nice.

Decided to try this place out again , because the outside patio is so nice to sit and enjoy. Our server seemed like it was his first week but he did a great job. My problem is the food. I'm writing this from bed because shortly after having the "big boy" burrito .. I'm pretty sure I just got food poisoning from the beef fajitas in the burrito. I have been going to Herbert's for over 25 years and they have never disappointed. I have friends that live out of state and when they come to visit they always have to go to Herbert's first. Their staff is quick and they know my family and I by name. Great food and great prices!!! read more

HORRIBLE service, even from the owner. I heard the owner tell another waitress "that we could wait" because he wanted her to get another table their drink order...mind you we had been waiting at a dirty table for 20 minutes for someone to come clean it and bring us chips/salsa and take our drink order. Food is average at best, even on a good day when there no one there. If there is more than two tables on the patio, might as well expect to wait DAYS for service. I've been there twice and service was so so the first time and God awful the second. We won't be going back...we'll try Taco Bell next time. read more

I have no idea as to why this place is always packed. The food is disgusting, greasy, and smelly. Literally. It was so bad that I couldn't even finish my tacos. Good location. Was packed but still felt they had enough parking. Seating inside and outside. We checked in outside. We were told they had a table big enough, just had to clean it. 20 minutes later we still didn't get seated. Checked to see how much longer you be seated. They said it would be 20 to 30 minutes more because they have the table you a smaller party. Still not upset went to see if they had any tables inside. They had not waiting and a big booth available. Got everyone ready to be seated and they took is you a different table. Took a while for our drinks(tea). Ordered our food but we still had not gotten our food after 20 minutes. Used the restrooms and both were dirty and the males didn't have soap. The changing table in the woman's restroom was still dirty with feces. Finally decided to leave and has you pay for the drinks and not refills we got. Everyone knew how long we were there but nothing was done even by the manager. Hope everyone gets treated better but don't gor when it's busy because they will just give you excuses. Also we were there on a Sunday after 2 pm. Still no food when we left at 4 pm. read more

The atmosphere with the outdoor seating playground (especially with kids) gives Herbert's 5 stars...the food 4 stars, typical service is a 2-3. On this occasion however negative stars are warranted. Came to dinner for boys night, me and my two boys, while my wife had girls night with friends. Sat outside so kids could play, which they do immediately and I know what they get, it's the same every time. Sat down at the table and a ninja server comes out of nowhere and drops off chips and salsa....last time anyone came to the table! I sat there for 20 minutes eating the chips the ninja server brought me. Servers came to other tables around me and took orders, cleared tables and brought drinks. I got up and so my patient kids could show me what they built next to the host area and we left as I told the host he could seat someone at my table since I had sat there for 20 minutes and nobody came, no apology from him other than "would you like to talk to the manager?" So hopefully the people waiting for the table my family was at got some service after the host talked to the manager who had walked by and said nothing either. I think my "server" must have also burnt their hands on those chips that came, because those chips were fresh and hot!! read more

This time the service was really bad.!:( We had three different people from our party of 12 to ask about our drinks 30 mins later I guess they finally figured out who was going to wait on us although the waitress could only take non alcoholic drinks so several people in out party waited even went inside to bar to our ourselves. Food came out no silverware ask for that 3-4 times by time we finally received our food was cold.:( Finally when almost finished eating they bring pitchers of water, tea and soda! My wife and I have eaten there 3 times. Every time the food was good, the service was friendly and the drinks were on point. We sat on the spacious deck each time and enjoyed the beautiful weather under big trees with our two Labrador Retrievers, who were welcomed and treated as royalty. The carne guisada is my go-to eat. Food was ok other than I found a toothpick wrapped up INSIDE my enchillada and another underneath both of them. The waiter did say they normally have toothpicks sticking up out of enchillada to indicate what kinda meat and he pulld them out before delivering them so he knew I was being honest. I've been eating Mexican food (tex mex) in south Texas for my whole life. As familiar as I am with pretty much every Mexican restaurant around, Herbert's does not deserve the reputation other reviewers have created. First, the new location has great atmosphere and the patio is a great feature. I have eaten here at least once a week for a couple of years,, and while the food and service are not 100 percent perfect every time, most of the time I would give them an A. Their cheese enchiladas are the best in NB, as is the chile relleno. The only thing I consistently don't love are the chips. Margaritas are good too. Don't let harsh reviews turn you away, give Herbert's a shot for yourself. read more

We gave Herbert's second chance yesterday. The location is easy to find. The property is beautiful. Interior well appointed. Very Clean Restrooms! The wait staff was friendly and helpful. However, we found the food definitely not to our liking. TEX-MEX is our favorite. This was not, in our opinion, TEX-MEX. The enchilada meat was overcooked and hard. The tortilla was hard. The cheese tasted like processed cheese food...not real cheese. The enchilada sauce had very little flavor. The taco was bland and the meat was overcooked. The refried beans were bland. The rice was OK. We always see lot's of cars there at lunch and at night. This is strictly our opinion. We know many people really like Herbert's. Everyone has a choice. Ours is not to go again. read more

My husband and I went Tuesday afternoon. We arrived for an early dinner at 4:45. Once the hostess came she said we could sit anywhere. We chose a booth close to the front. After sitting there for 20 minutes with no service we chose to leave, especially after watching a waitress and the hostess leaning over the front counter playing with their phones. There were other patrons there being served by one other servers. No wonder they have a sign up saying Hostess and Servers needed. read more

Herbert's is great, we eat here at least twice a week and it It's always good. The food is cheap and we have onl had bad service one time out of probably fifty visits, the other 99% of the time the waiting staff are always on point. Cheese enchiladas and JR's Special are very good and their breakfast (served until noon) really hits the spot. read more

I LOVE Herbert's!!! My boyfriend and I eat here at least once a week! I can understand how there may be a few complaints about service, but thankfully everything else makes up for it! We have walked in right before close before and they stayed open just to serve us. I absolutely LOVE their salsa! And my boyfriend and I both love their enchilada sauce. The best restaurant for dining. Friends had a great time on the patio. The weather was excellent. The service was great but my favorite plate is the grilled sizzling fajitas. I love Herbert's. It's my second favorite restaurant behind the one in San Marcos. Their food is great, and they have a nice outdoor area. However, today on my visit, our waitress brought us chips and salsa. A few minutes later, another waitress, Mexican woman, maybe mid 40s, had chips in her hand and apon seeing us (My dad and I), she exclaimed "Goddamnit" when she saw our chips. Use to be our favorite spot, but lately servers walk right by customers who are waiting to be seated. Servers taking way too long to take your order and very long for your order too. Made several requests for heater turned in, sugar for coffee vey poor service ignoring customers. Won't be back. 1 hr so far no food. read more
