My first time ordering to-go here and everything was fantastic. We just moved from California and all the other pho places looked very gentrified. I like my pho places looking like the grandma works in the back and the decor isn't the main focus but the food quality is. We ordered the Singaporean Stir-Fry, Salt and Pepper Shrimp, Calamari (similar style to the salt and pepper shrimp), and pad Thai. Our favorite was the calamari dish. Kudos to the sauce which was a lime and coconut milk mixture, which was complimentary to it. We actually wanted to call and order more but decided we would wait for the next to-go order. Pricing is different out here and these items were reasonably priced compared to other places. Will be ordering from them again. Would refer this place! read more

Super disappointed, as this is my first time here, and I wasn't impressed. The hostess is super friendly and helped me figure out what I wanted, as I haven't had Vietnamese in awhile. I went with the Singaporean with shrimp and a Vietnamese coffee. The hostess took other orders while my coffee steeped. Most places, I get the coffee and watch it steep and pour it myself, but this once, they mix you up for you. I waited several minutes before she brought it over. But it was delicious, sweet and strong. But then my food came at the same time. The steamed broccoli was cold, and I thought the shrimp would be stir-fryed with the vermicelli, but it was separate. The sauce was thin, and I couldn't mix the noodles with the stir fry and get a good flavor, like I usually do. After I grabbed some chili sauce and soy sauce, I got a good flavor on the noodles. The food was good, but the cold broccoli and small portion size for dinner is a turnoff. I suppose if I come back I'll order an app, but I am not impressed. I think next time I'm headed home, I'll walk over to 888 instead. When I get Asian food, I like to have enough for leftovers, while being satisfied with the meal. Not the case here. read more

This is a really good spot. It's hidden in a strip mall, but is pretty spacious. The staff is amazingly friendly and helpful. I came here with a large group (10+). Several of the people I was with had questions or wanted suggestions. The guy taking our orders answered everything with a smile. I got a tofu sandwich, and it was so good. I absolutely want to come back and try something else. Everyone had only good things to say about their food. Some ordered the curry, others the pho, and I heard lots of praise for the braised pork. I took off a star for it being a bit dirty, and the fact that my sandwich came out later than I had expected. Got take out here after a long day out. Got spring rolls, lemon grass banh mi with pork, and seaweed salad. The banh mi was great. Honestly, I liked it even better than the famous Saigon Le Vendeur and at a much better price. The spring rolls could've been better, but they were pretty much lukewarm by the time I ate them, so not necessarily the fairest tasting. Wasn't a major fan of the sauce they serve it with. I enjoyed the seaweed salad, but pretty much on par with what you'd get in the sushi section at H-E-B. Took them about 15 minutes to prepare, from phone call to pick up. First of all I must say the owner here is so nice! He took as well as served us our order with much hospitality so I must say the service here is quite great. My parents were craving viet food and came across this place online. They seemed to enjoy their pho and said it was better than some other pho places in Austin. I tried it and it was more of a light pho, didnt feel very heavy. It wasn't mind blowing or anything but if you're really craving pho I wouldn't sway you from going for it. I myself had the braised pork belly and it was delish!! Definitely one of their speciality dishes that is a must try. Cooked to juicy perfection. The meat is soft and tender and falls apart. The spring rolls and dumpling are all solid choices too although I'd complain that they don't add pâté to the Bahn mi so if that's your jam you may stick with other options. I order takeout from Het Say for lunch or dinner probably three times per month. I grew up eating the Vietnamese food cooked by my Vietnamese stepmother and her mother, who lived in our house with us. Het Say is hands down consistently the best Vietnamese in South Austin. There are several other Vietnamese places right on Oltorf and of course many in South Austin. I've tried so many of them and Het Say rocks my world. This place has gone through the wringer in terms of prior ownership and names, and was always a spot I avoided after one particularly bad experience. So when I saw that the name and seemingly the owners had changed, I was extremely curious. The menu and website are well maintained, and have intriguing options. I went with the egg rolls, salt and pepper shrimp, and a stir fry noodle. The egg rolls were great, had plenty of meat inside, would recommend getting them if you're a fan of good Vietnamese egg rolls. The salt and pepper shrimp were fine, but it was no different from the kind you'd get at a buffet, and for $8 it was a bit steep for what it is. The noodles I was greatly disappointed by sadly. They weren't really sauteed with that smokey/oily taste I normally like from a good stir fry. I added some veggies and shrimp, and it really jacked the price up as well which didn't help too much with my perception of the place. All in all the place has certainly gotten better, no denying that. However, that bar was pretty low, and it wasn't a vast enough improvement that I'd add this spot to my rotation of places I like to go to. The area has a few other spots that are just simply more established, cheaper, and tastier. Worth a try if you want to mix things up a bit though. read more

Once upon a Sunday morning hangover, my friends and I did not want to go far for our ritualistic Pho fix. We decided to try this new place out. Being the alcoholic champ that I am, I wasn't desperate for soup like my perishing buddies so I decided to order the Thit Kho (Braised Pork Belly and Egg). Unlike most Viet restaurants I've been to, this place seems to be Americanized with all of the menu items in English so I could only guess what the Viet dish is supposed to be like based on the English translation. My friends were way too hungover for me to trust their judgements on their Pho orders but here are my thoughts on the Thit Kho: I was a tad disappointed when my dish came out with only 3 small pieces of meat that consisted mostly of fat. Other than the lack of quantity, I must say it was well seasoned and the sauce was on point. If you are craving Thit Kho, there are not a lot of places that serve it so I give this place props for that. Also, the Vietnamese Coffee was bomb. read more

I don't know what authentic Vietnamese food taste like. But what I do know is that this place was phenomenal. I had a great experience. They do counter service and I prefer it that way. Food was served quickly and man oh man was it worth every penny. I had the bao buns: 4/5 . I been to momofuku in nyc and I compare all buns to those. This says A LOT about these Braised pork belly: 5/5 . This dish was damn good. Like whoa. Packed with flavor and melt in your mouth meat. The rice was cooked to perfection! It's really affordable and exquisite. Highly recommend. Restrooms: 4/5 they did the best they could with what they have it's obviously renovated from an old crappy bathroom. First time going here because I saw the menu and was attracted by the braised pork and braised catfish. I ended up ordering shrimp spring rolls, braised catfish, and jackfruit smoothie with boba. Atmosphere and server: you order in the front table before you're being seated. The guy was extremely nice and helpful with selections. The atmosphere look like a typical viet restaurant. I went on a Sunday night and it is quite quiet with soft music. Spring roll: it was kind of a disappointment to see the spring rolls wasn't as authentic because of the ingredients they chose. Peanut sauce was good tho. Braised cat fish: the sauce was a bit oily but depends on who you are as a person, perfect texture and taste. Reminds me of home cooked meals. It would have been wayyyyy better if they have an option for a small bowl of canh/nc lèo on the side, since the braised dish can get a bit salty sometimes. Instead they have a bit of salad on the side, it's a healthier option definitely, but the selection of the green just makes it look like they toss it on to decorate the dish. Husband I were looking to try a new Vietnamese place and saw that this place had good Yelp reviews. I called and they said that there was no wait to be seated at 7PM on a Sunday night. Don't come here if you are looking for ambiance for a date night. Do come if you want excellent friendly service and wonderful food. We had the pork egg rolls , Yellow Curry Chicken and the Lemongrass Pork Bahn Mi. The egg rolls were average, but made better with the dipping sauce. The Yellow Curry was amazing (we will order it with every visit). The Bahn Mi was tasty. Next time I'm getting the pork belly with egg that was recommended. I tried the braised ginger catfish since it was the closest thing to ca kho I could find in Austin and it was close to how my mom makes it. There are bones in there so be careful. It was kinda meh. Didn't really hit the spot. The name is Vietnamese but it tastes more Filipinos, Thai or something. Not authentic.

This place popped up in my radar and since I was in the mood for Vietnamese, I was hoping that this place would be as authentic as it can get for South Austin. When I went inside, I was greeted with friendly service from a guy who seems to personally run the front end of the house. I looked around for the menu and was a bit disappointed by the limited Vietnamese offerings compared to what I'm used to seeing, but at least I did not spot a single menu item that costed over $10. I also noticed that they sell beer, which means they already obtained a liquor license despite it being a recent addition to the South Austin dining scene. I tried three different things, none of which were really remarkable. Egg rolls ($3 for 2) were okay, consisting of bits of ground pork, glass noodles, taro, mushroom, carrots. Het Say Special ($8.50) which consists of a choice of protein (beef in this case) stir fried with onions, garlic, broccoli, napa cabbage, mushrooms and carrots in a "delight" sauce, and rice vermicelli (can opt for white rice) was a good portion, but tasted generic and the quality of the beef was disappointing, as if I had ordered some Chinese take-out. Braised Pork Belly & Egg ($9) was a pretty-looking dish (instagrammable) consisted of the proteins being braised in coconut juice, fish sauce, garlic & onions, but tasted over salted and surprisingly spicy, which is something I would not have foreseen unless if I knew that they were trying to reinvent the bun bo hue. This dish also would have been better if the pork belly was seared first, and if the accompanying side salad was better dressed (too light in dressing, and looks uninspired - more so than the other salads I see in the pictures on Yelp). Unfortunately, I'm not sure if I would return. And considering that South Austin is full of mediocre Asian restaurants, I still would be more inclined to the other ones simply because of the larger menu, and also maybe for having slightly better quality ingredients. Note: In their webpage, it looks like their menu is more expansive than what I saw in the restaurant, and I'm not sure why. read more

We stumbled across this place after our first few choices in the area were either closed or too crowded - so glad we did! The food was delicious, plentiful, and inexpensive. It's not a huge menu, but I actually liked that - too many places spread themselves too thin and offer 100 different dishes but don't do any of them well (looking at you, 888). But here's, it's a more focused menu done well. They also had a surprisingly great selection of beers! What really surprised me, though, was the service. This place is counter-service (then they bring your food to the table), but our 'cashier' was more knowledgeable, helpful, and friendly than the average server I get at a full-service restaurant. Knew the menu, offered suggestions, even double-checked when he overheard one of us mention a food-restriction to each other but forgot to mention it to him. Well lit, clean, plenty of parking (it's in a strip-mall) My only small complaint, I wish they'd look into more eco-friendly to-go containers. Styrofoam is as bad as it gets. Great value, but also a good menu. There are a few things on their menu that you don't see elsewhere or in combination. There are many places for pho, but there aren't as many places for the bao, traditional braised pork belly and eggs, or banh mi. While their takes are different than most any others I've tried, I chalk that up to familial traditions and differences. The service is polite and they are happy to make accommodations and eager to make suggestions. Tip: if you're on keto (I am but wasn't when I first started visiting this place), ask for steamed veggies or salad and tell them you don't want the buns, rice, or noodles (in case you order the bao or pho, for instance). read more

I've been here a handful of times and I think I'll definitely be a regular customer. The beef pho is some of the best I've had. The broth is super delicious, and quite clear, an indicator that there was lots of care put into the making of it. And the noodles are really wonderful! The have a nice bite and don't seem as though they get mushy quickly. I've had the egg rolls and the lemongrass banh mi as well, both delicious. Growing up in a Vietnamese household in Southern California near Garden Grove probably makes me bias. But overall, the food was okay. The beef pho broth was a little lacking in flavor and I think the water used for the broth gives a slight aftertaste. Thit kho is my favorite childhood dish so, again, biased. The flavor is there but a little diluted. I did, however, really enjoyed the calamari. It was very unique and reminded me of salt n pepper prawns. Having not been here since retirement where I worked a mile away & then the covid shut down, we decided to make the trip from NAustin just to eat here. Tony was finally able to reopen to dine-in & I was craving the Vegetarian Pho. This place is amazing and the owner is an absolute doll. My guy used to work with his aunt who owned the establishment a few years ago under a different name. It's a long-time family run local business and I support this place 100%. The veggie pho was just perfect, noodles nice and soft, veggies cooked yet still crunchy. Tofu spring rolls were rolled perfectly as well. Everything was fresh. My only "complaint" is that I'd wish they would serve smaller portions of the Pho - it's a LOT of food and I can usually only eat 1/4th of the bowl - the rest goes home despite the noodles naturally deteriorate in the broth when not "freshly made".
