High Scores Arcade is one gnarly spot! My friends and I are in downtown Alameda often and it makes me wonder why I haven't stumbled upon this place sooner. This arcade consist of every known classics game that you can think of. Every machine seems to be in good condition and still in its vintage-original form. My group of friends and I randomly walked in while walking to our cars at 10:45pm. Not knowing they will be closing at 11pm, the owner welcomed us and told us we can play for free til the store closed. SWEET! All staffs were friendly and helpful. The price for playing games are $5 per hour or $10 all day. You had to do a double-take didn't you? Such a great deal. Games that we saw and/or played were: Street-Fighters, Rampage, Metal Slug, Fix-it-Felix, Tetris, Pac Man, and Donkey Kong. Worth checking out if you're in the area..it'll definitely bring back some nostalgia. Four stars because I only spent 15 minutes here. This place literally is my childhood dream made real and improved upon. The black lighting, the jukebox blasting 80s hits and the games, the glorious glorious games. If you've ever seen Wreck It Ralph and didn't get the games referenced, most are here, even Fix-It-Felix. $5 for an hour of all the games you want or $10 for all day. You know what $5 in quarters used to buy me back in the day? 10 minutes or so of getting my ass whooped on street fighter 2 and another ass whooping that evening from my mom when she found out what I did with the quarters for the laundrymat. We had a blast here. I can't wait to bring my kids here so they can see how we used to do back in the day. read more

What a gem! For a very reasonable price you get to play unlimited games for an hour. For those of us of a certain age you can go back and finally beat those memories of your youth that you never had enough quarters for! The place has a great variety and they rotate out with more cabinets, and several cabinets contain multiple games you can choose from. A great idea excellently executed. read more

Probably one of the best throwback arcades I've ever been in given the diversity of games. You don't need to read this if you're looking for a litany of video games available: just know that they have classic Mario Bros, street fighter, and some version of Michael Jackson's Moonwalker on one of the multicade (allows up to 4 players at a time) machines in the back. Oh yea, Double Dragon is there too. Super nostalgic place at night if you remember what the 80's were like and how awesome it was being a kid or happily immature adult during them. Thanks to High Scores, I was able to satisfy my vintage (childhood) video game fix. I'm definitely not as seasoned a player as I used to be, because I was pretty terrible at many of my favorites such as Q*Bert, Paperboy, Star Wars and others. Many of the games work exactly as intended, but some of the games with multiple directional controllers such as Robotron and Smash TV had glitches where the joysticks were sticky or did not like to register certain directions. A few games that I wanted to play, like Frontline, had no credits for free play, and I was too lazy to ask the attendant to open the cabinet and click some credits. The only way I could think of High Scores Arcade being better (aside from some game maintenance), is if it were High Scores Barcade. Maybe for their next venture? A brew or a cocktail would definitely enhance the experience. read more

Everything is well kept and maintained, the place is immaculately clean, the staff genuinely cares about gaming and the experiences of the customer and the prices are excellent. Luckily you won't have to worry about dropping that last quarter here at High Scores Arcade, as a $10 flat fee grants unlimited play for the entire night. That's right, unlimited. In our world of refills costing .50 cents and overage charges on phone bills, unlimited sounds so perfect, which is exactly what High Scores is. You've got a great variety of games to choose from. Going for the classic standards? Then gobble those energy pellets as Pacman or drop some blocks in Tetris. Wanna drive? Then lay some smokescreens in Spyhunter. Feel like throwing some punches? Then toss some Hadoukens on Street Fighter or bicycle kicks on Mortal Kombat. They've even got the Fix-It Felix arcade game from Wreck It Ralph for a dose of familiar for the younger crowd. Really, the only drawbacks is that there's no food or drinks which is highly understandable considering these are retro machines and I wouldn't trust some 7 year old with balance issues carrying a large soda to be playing on them. There's also no public bathroom anymore here since according to the hilarious sign on the door, the poop smearing bandit has struck their bathroom and ruined it for everyone. This really is one of my favorite new places to go on Park St. Perfect little addition to the neighborhood. Gonna do my best now to try and set some high scores of my own! read more

My husband and I rented out High Scores for a private party earlier this month and it was a great experience. All our guests said that the event was the best adult birthday party they ever attended. We were able to relive our childhoods playing some awesome 1980s arcade games. Meg and Shawn were super-nice and helpful in setting up the space to accommodate drinks and catering for us, and price was ultimately very reasonable. They were especially right on in recommending a restaurant down the street, Spice I Am, to provide catering for the event. We've also been to the arcade during regular business hours and it is a ton of fun for adults and kids alike. I love that they have the option for just 1 hour entry (very reasonably priced at $5) if you only have a short while to visit and also that they offer an all-day pass for $10 too if you want to game until your eyes are blurry. High Scores is an awesome addition to the Park Street entertainment scene and is a great fit for Alameda. My family will be back regularly. read more

I just left this place. And let me tell you. I had lots of fun. I paid the &5 dollars for an hour and they have a selection for everyone. for the racer, the killer, the fighter, & the intellectual. It was really fun. There are pictures posted on here where it looks really packed and maybe it being a Wednesday afternoon it wasn't as busy so I had LOTS to choose from. They have the classics! Definitely coming here again. And they also have gift certificates! They have black lights so it's a little dimmed in there but it gives it a great vibe. It allows you to see the video game screen ever better. And they have some pretty awesome art work on the wall. Also behind the register you can see a "High Scores List" it's pretty cool. Traditional arcades have pretty much been extinct since the mid-90s. I think I can speak for most people when I say I was overwhelmed with joy when I found out that High Scores (formerly located in NJ) would be opening its doors in Alameda. You won't find rows of redemption games here, folks. This is the real deal. You'll find many classics like Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, Tron, Star Wars, Millipede, etc. There are a few 90s titles like MK3, SFII and Final Fight as well as a couple of driving games. They constantly rotate games in and out to keep it fresh. The owners, Shawn and Meg, are good people. They are very passionate about classic arcade gaming and it shows as soon as you step foot into High Scores. You will be greeted warmly and you will experience the lights and sounds of a classic arcade. This place is really cool. I love that you just pay one fee and (which is super reasonable) in order to play for a couple of hours or all day. It's perfect to take kids with you because you don't have to continuously be pulling out your change or paying for more coins for them to keep playing games. You can play at ease knowing the kids will be good for however much time you're there. They have a variety of games from back in the day and even though it seems as though it's packed, people eventually move around and you can try out other games while (at least from my experience when I've gone). They also had some garbage pail kids cards, which was nostalgic. Parking can be tough at times but we always expect to walk some distance. I recommend others to check this spot out. read more

First time visiting the Bay area... I was looking for something to do that wasn't just a typical bar on a Saturday. If you get a chunk of time and want to spend it like a few decades ago, this is a neat spot. The $10 entry is pretty easy to spend in what would be $0.25 or $0.50 increments if you had to pay for each game. I'm super glad this place exists, and Alameda, with its strangely retro vibe the minute you set foot on the island, is the perfect place for it. -0.5 stars just because even though I have no right to do so, I hold the business accountable for not being an endlessly expansive twisty-turny dream palace of every video game I ever loved. This is a tiny little hole in the wall with a bunch of old school arcade games such as PAC Mac, Tetris, Donkey Kong, Tron, Joust and the like. They charge $6/hour but call themselves a "museum" so if you are a parent/adult along to supervise your children you are required to pay the $6 fee despite the fact that you have NO interest in playing their antique games!!! What a joke! Who drops their children off and leaves them unsupervised? Oh yes, and let's not forget, as with any other place in or near SF the parking SUCKS!!! read more

Every sh*tty arcade game you loved all under one roof. Apparently it's $5 for 60 mins and $10 for unlimited all day. But I have to be honest, my wife and I walked in, and no one tried to charge us. So it was basically free. All the arcade games with no need for quarters - everything from Mike Tyson's punchout, to ms pacman to paperboy to skate or die. Machines are old and controls are a little janky at times, but these are 20-30 yr old machines. This place is classic, down to the 80's music jukebox playing hits from the past. read more

Simple and sweet. Small venue with old school arcades lining each side and a mini room of a few more games in the back. No need for coins as you just pay $10 to play any game. Although, the coins would be useful for the versus games like Street Fighter. I definitely appreciated how they have hand sanitizers and step stools available. Seriously, this place is 5+ stars!!! A group of friends and I practically spent all day here (dorks, I know)! Great variety of games and the best part is the unlimited play. If you've never beat an arcade game before, here's the place to do it. You could easily spent $10 worth of quarters in a couple of hours at a traditional arcade...so why not just get the all day pass? They allow you to bring outside drinks in - they just ask that you sent it at the front desk. The wristband will allow you in and out access. Can't beat it - video games and good food in the area. I have a lot of nostalgia for the 80s and video games in particular, so when I noticed on yelp that there was an arcade just 10 minutes from my humble abode I practically teleported there. Not only is it a killer deal ($10 for ALL DAY GAMES?), but they have pretty much all my favorites. Jr. Pac Man is one of those games I heard about when I was a kid but never got to play until I was an adult, and I play it whenever I can. High Scores has TWO OF THEM. Super Pac Man too, but that one's pretty lame. High Scores makes the long weight til the CA Gaming Expo next year a non-issue. High Scores is simply awesome. I was really happy when they opened their doors here in Alameda. A very welcome addition to Park Street. Not only are the arcade games straight from the 80's, so is the groovy lighting and background music (think pre-Hagar Van Halen, Journey, etc). I love businesses that are consistent to their theme. The collection of games is impressive. Galaga, Space Invaders, Defender, Frogger, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Pac Man and much more. They also have a "multicade" machine that allows you to choose from a couple hundred games. Five bucks for an hour of unlimited play is a great deal. Especially for me, since I haven't played most of these games since the 80's (most of my games ended quickly on my first visit). You can also play all day for $10. I highly recommend that you watch the movie "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters " (trust me on this), and then head off to High Scores. read more

Have you ever wanted to time travel? If you're interested in High Scores then the answer should be "yes". You should head to this time warp in Alameda. Stepping into this establishment you will feel like a teenager in the 80's instantly. This amazing collection of games in one place was overwhelming at first. I wasn't sure where to start but I knew one thing, one hour in here would clearly not be enough (do yourself a favor and buy the all day pass). I'm not going to name all of the games I wanted to jump into because this list would be massive, just know that you will find something to play and someone to play it with. I went around 5pm on a Friday and it was pretty low key. From some of the photos though it looks like it can be poppin' a litter later in the evening. Five bucks for an hour or ten bucks all day! This place is a must! I came across it while searching for a nice spot to take my boys out and well Yelp suggested this spot, I said why not since by the pictures it seemed kind of nice. For the most part, I really enjoyed my time here at High Scores this past Saturday. They have a pretty decent selection of arcade games and the interior of the place is a huge throwback to the dark and loud arcades of the 80's/90's. However, for as much fun as I had, there were a few things that I thought could be better. They have a lot of emulated/multigame cabinets there with won't be an issue to most, but playing a classic arcade game with an LCD screen doesn't feel right. Still, most people will not have a problem with this and this is just me being picky. The other issue I had was the fact that the back wall of arcade games was where their Super Street Fighter II Turbo machine was located. While it was great that they had the game, the entire back wall of arcades are so compressed that it's near impossible to play that game comfortably with another player. I don't know how they will fix that in the future without moving to a larger space, but I do hope that they are successful enough to do so in the future. read more
