We stumbled across this place just looking somewhere to eat. It is a downstairs cellar type of restaurant with a bar. Our server was really great. I ordered the steak sandwich and he ordered a burger from their special menu. The steak and burger were cooked perfectly, but lacked flavor. We also ordered their calamari which was amazing! I would go back to try it because we did eat there rather late so I'd be interested to try their food during regular hours to see if it's better. read more

I've admittedly been sleeping on Highland Tap. Silly, silly me. I have been to Highland Tap more than a few times after the hours of 10pm to indulge in their bar offerings. This visit was totally different - it was lunch time! Down the dimly lit stairs I went and I was greeted by a lovely lady asking if I wanted to grab a table in the dining room. I declined and told her I'd grab a spot at the bar for myself and my colleague. The bartender would've taken care of me regardless, but the dining room was empty and there were a smattering of folks seated at the bar. I placed my drink order (a refreshing Long Drink over ice + a lime) and started perusing the menu. I don't know if you know this about me, but I'm a huge fan of goat cheese. I love it. Like, a lot. As soon as I laid my eyes on the peach glazed grilled chicken salad, it was over. No need to continue searching as this salad would make my belly very happy. I am happy to say that I was not wrong. Delicious Springer Mountain grilled chicken with a peachy coating atop a massive pile of spring mix, strawberries, blueberries, Georgia pecans and of course...goat cheese. It was so good, I couldn't help but clean my plate. One of the better salads I've eaten lately....but with all that (delicious) goat cheese, it probably wasn't the healthiest. I originally put my name on the list for Fontaine's but the wait was 1.5hrs. So my girlfriend and I just walked around for a bit and we happen to stop in front of this place. We were looking for drinks until our reservation was ready. After we entered, we found that they had rockerfeller oysters, which is what we really wanted, I'm so glad we did, after eating the scrumptious oysters, we just decided we should go ahead and eat dinner. Let me tell you. it was more than what I expected. We found a gem and had no idea that we would be coming back to this place again!! I had the ribeye, mushrooms, loaded mash and collard greens. Wow, probably one of the best medium priced rib eye steaks I have ever had. First steak I have ever had where I felt that eating it with the sauce actually detracted from the experience. GET THE RIB-EYE. And don't forget the restaurant.com coupon!! The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and had a delicious slight char to it from he grill. The first bites just literally melted in my mouth. It was that tender. The steak was perfectly seasoned, so much so that I felt that I didn't need to use sauce at all. The sautéed mushrooms were cooked perfectly tender but still with a bite of bite to them. And seasoned perfectly, salty and pepperr-y, but still full of that delicious mushroom-y flavor. However, the mashed potatoes were only average, nothing really stood out in them for me. They totally smooth, but they weren't chunky. It was kind of like it was having an identity crisis. The crab cakes were crisp, full of crab meat, and paired perfectly with the chipotle aioli. It came lightly breaded and fried on the outside which gave it light crispness to it on the outside without causing the inside crab meat to be oily or greasy at all. The light seasoning on them allowed the delicate sweetness of crab to shine though. YUM. Definitely get them. The complementary bread with homemade butter was absolutely delicious. Slightly sweet, soft, and so moist. The homemade butter had a hint of honey infused into it and that just put it over the edge. It was so good that I ate 2 loaves there, and ended up asking for taking home 4 small loaves which I proceeded to share with my friends (they absolutely demolished them) But if you're coming here, save room for dessert!!! The cheesecake was absolutely delicious. It's not what you think of when you think of a chocolate cheesecake. The actual cheesecake is split into 2 sections, the top section which is a chocolate chip mousse (which has the perfect cookies and cream taste to it) and the bottom section which is the actual cheesecake. The butter graham cracker crust is studded with chocolate chips, and on the side is a dollop of smooth whipped cream. YUM. I literally had to pull myself away because it was so good I wanted my friends to try it. Every dish I had here was amazing. From the crab cake appetizer, to the Rib-eye Entrée and ending with the chocolate mousse cheesecake, I enjoyed (and devoured) everything. This place was on the top ten list for Creative Loafing's best burger in Atlanta. My boyfriend and I had to come in and try it for ourselves. This place is downstairs, so all you see is the sign if you walk by it. FYI- they do have parking int he back. We didn't know so we parked far far away, oh well. We started with the muscles as an appetizer. They are pretty good, nice and garlicky & it comes with 2 big hunks of garlic bread for dipping. Between the 3 of us, we had plenty. Our burger: it was great. Wasn't my favorite ever but we liked it. **it's $11 ($1/2 off on Tuesdays so $5.5) but careful because if the waitress asks if you want cheese, jalapenos or bacon on it. It's $2 extra per. She didn't tell us it was extra so they lost a star for that. You gotta be honest from the beginning, they also forgot to add the bacon to my boyfriends burger and charged it on our bill. He got 1/2 fries and 1/2 onion rings as a side. I got mac and cheese. The sides are awesome, you could also get a loaded potato, asparagus or spinach and a few other options as sides. My friend got the prime rib sandwich. He ate every last bit so I know he liked it. He got fries with it. We like that the fries are big, crispy and made just right. Props for that! For dessert we got carrot cake. My friend said it was the best he'd had in a while. So this score is kind of an average of my first review and my second experience. On this visit, my date and I had a late Sunday dinner. Not a ton of options late hours on Sunday. So thanks for being open! We were seated quickly. I ordered a burger with fries and added a side of brussels sprouts. My date ordered the prime rib. BACON SEARED BRUSSELS SPROUTS. Man, that sounds so good. In reality, not so much. The sprouts were huge! And they were not tender enough. I tend to prefer my sprouts more on the roasted side so these were just not cooked enough for my liking. The burger was rather bland. I only ate half of it as it was pretty hefty. I took the other half home, but didn't even bother eating the rest. Yea.... And I am a burger lover. Description of THE ORIGINAL STEAK BURGER: 1/2 pound, ground in house, hand partied and wood fired with tomato jam on the side. I added cheese. Was not a big fan of the tomato jam. Really good food in an unassuming environment. This restaurant is known for its steals, from what I understand, and for good reason. My girlfriend got the steak Oscar and is still talking about it a day later. I'm not a meat eater so I went with the special, the red snapper topped with lobster atop a jalapeno grit cake with a veggie medley on the side. This meal was to die for. The portion was almost too big for me to finish but too good to waste. Even the veggie medley didn't disappoint. We also got the escargot appetizer, which was a twist on normal escargot with a pastry bread and cheese on top. So good. So, so good. The escargot itself was great--huge snails and very fresh. Overall this was a great exlerience. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is the noise from the bar in the next room was a lot. It's cool that you can show up here as you are. No reason to dress up, but you certainly can without standing out. But the bar right next to you is a nitty gritty hole in the wall, and that can keep things from feeling as fancy as the food suggests. read more

Honestly, the best meatloaf I've ever had. Even our college student that hates meatloaf thought it was great. The steaks were evenly cooked to the exact medium rare that the others wanted. He had the the House New York strip steak and the bacon seared Brussels sprouts. He loved the steak. He said the Brussels sprouts were good, but not great. I had the Lobster Burger with a mix of onion rings and French fries. I loved the fresh cut fries. The onion rings were just okay. There wasn't enough batter & it was bland. The burger was very tasty. The lobster was a great topping. We both ordered beer. They had a nice selection to choose from. The waitress was very knowledgable about the options. Well I met my husband at the bar here in 2001. Been here several times for drinks and hand full of times for dinner. Tonight was last minute decision with hubby and two other friends. Highland Tap is a VA Highlands staple, and one of my personal favorites in the neighborhood. Established in the 80's, this spot exudes a vintage steakhouse feel, and is probably one of the coziest spot in town. The entire restaurant is located down a flight of red-carpeted stairs, and it feels like you are in a basement, with dark wood and stone accents with red-vinyl barstools and booths contributing to an old fashioned feel. Their gin martini is the best deal in the neighborhood- simple, strong and ice-cold, served old-school with a sidecar, making you feel like you have two (or three) drinks for the price of one. This time, we sampled from their menu of typical, no-frills steakhouse offerings. We shared an order of perfectly-seasoned crispy fries and a refreshing wedge salad with a decadent bleu cheese dressing (sans bacon). Be warned- the service here (at least at the bar) is notoriously slow, with some of the bartenders being particularly inattentive. However, given the retro, laid-back atmosphere, I feel like it is to be expected, and the drinks and food more than make up for it. Highland Tap is a good choice in VA Highlands for a classic, yet simple, steakhouse experience, and of course, a strong martini. Enjoy! read more

Our drinks were totally forgotten despite the fact that we asked for the waitress' opinion about the cocktails. She also forgot our side orders despite writing them down. Valentine's Day is a special night for couples. Didn't know I needed to find a place until Wednesday before "the day." Called a lot of places but were booked. I then remembered how much I liked the Highland Tap, tried them, and was able to get a reservation. We arrived at 7 pm and had no issues parking as they have valet and getting to our table was smooth. Service was prompt. They are known for their traditional martini and I thought it was great. My date ordered a chocolate martini and it was just ok. HT is or was known for their prime rib so that was what we ordered. What we got was a bit tough and difficult to cut - chewy. Not much flavor so thank goodness for the horseradish sauce and the au jus. Made a suggestion to pass to bartender to consider to improve the chocolate martini but server didn't want to hear it. What they brought looked like watered down chocolate milk. I will try HT again hoping this was a one out but really hoping the grade of meat and cutting utensils improve.
