It's terrifying to take my car to an unknown mechanic...but due to circumstances out of my control I had to rely on reviews and I ended up at Highlands Auto Center. Despite calling 4 minutes before close on a Sunday they answered the phone and were in constant communication for hours after; including the owner on his personal cell phone. They gave me a quote for everything that needed to be done to my car, and upon my request another quote for how much it would take to make my car driveable. Not only did they go above and beyond with my financial restraints, they sent me pictures and texts to update me on the progress. I was shocked by how quickly my car was ready. I thought they where really honest. I left my car to be worked on for a week. And one of the employees took it out rear ended another car. Highland didnt tell me my insurance called and let me know. They said they would repair my car and they did some work. But my hood looks awful they really messed it up then told me i could pay 350.00 to repair it. I showed up for the first time ever in the morning with my BMW that was smelling overheated and had an appointment I needed to get to and the owner insisted that I take his car so I wasn't late. I want to thank my fellow Yelpers for leading me to this place. I put a post asking where a good and fair mechanic was that I could get my 30K checkup done. I called several of the places that were suggested to me and by far the nicest and most accommodating on the phone were Highlands. They checked prices for me, were kind, and since Highlands was a two minute drive from my home, I decided to go there. Upon arrival I was greeted by one of the mechanics named Brandon. We went to the computer in the lobby and we pulled up what my Escape needed for a 30K inspection. He then took the list and looked at the car. Brandon then came into the waiting room, sat down next to me and went through the list one by one and gave recommendations on what we should take care of based on his inspection of the car (he also comped the labor on a few items, such as putting in an air filter). After he showed me, he asked if everything was ok to start and I said yes. As they were working, he showed me my front right tire which was basically bald, and said for $30 he could find me a slightly used tire (drove to another store to get it and brought it back) and they would put it on. When I checked out, I was happy with my price and the service. So if you're looking for a place that has personal service, attention to detail, and fair (I didn't say cheap), then go to Highlands. read more

These guys are awesome! I was having an issue with my starter. I was stuck in the parking lot of Kohl's trying desperately to start my car.. so imagine.. pushing down on the brake and pushing the start button and all you hear are clicks... and it was hot as hell outside!! So, I got it to start and drove it to Highland Auto Center and they did a diagnostic test and it didn't show that anything was wrong, so they reset the computer in my car and everything was fine. Hands down the the best quality and most honest service I've received from a mechanic. I have had my fair share of being screwed over. (They've heard the stories) The guys at Highlands don't list a bunch of parts that need replacement, they physically show you in person exactly what is broken, so you are fully cognizant of what is happening to your car. They don't just state that the axle needs replacement, they lift the car and show you the tear. They don't hide behind a desk when researching parts, they let you see exactly what price the parts are going for, so you know there is truth in pricing. My poor Altima is a teenager now, and if car years are anything like dog years, it can basically be considered geriatric. I have every ounce of faith, that with them taking care of Sheila (yes, I named her), she will easily hit 200,000 miles or more. My only beef is with Austin- why haven't you brought your pooches while I'm there? :) (just kidding, you're awesome) P.S. they will tow your car and provide transport home if the repair will be time consuming. read more

Complete ripoff. This shop will charge you out the butt for anything they can. This place charged me 600$ for a new starter, with the promise of a 2-year warranty. Less than a month later, the positive wire was burned. This happened because the wires were put on incorrectly after they put in the new starter. So I come back to this shop and they try to charge me another $300 for what should be covered in the warranty, right? If you put on the wires connected to the starter wrong, then shouldn't this be covered by the starter warranty? Anyways, don't come here. Unless you're ready to pay big $$$ read more

I cannot say enough about this place. I've been here one time, 2 days ago, and I can guarantee I will come back with any car issue I have in the future. This was the third place I went looking for someone, anyone, to tell me what was making the annoying noise when I drive. I spent about $200 at a national tire chain for a new wheel (that I probably didn't really need) and left still hearing the same noise. I was angry and decided to pull right into Highlands Auto Center and see if I could get a fourth opinion. Not only did I get an opinion, the mechanic drove my car around the block and diagnosed the problem immediately. The owner (I'm serious) drove me home while they fixed my car and then came and picked me up when it was done. My car now drives like a dream and no more noise! Also, while I was there, a lady came in for an oil change and she was ready to roll in 15 minutes! DO NOT EVER GO HERE! I had dropped off my car to have an error code checked out about my oxygen sensors, and when they called they said they would need to do a compression test because I was having misfires, and it would be 200$. I said no I didn't want the test and I would come pick up the car. So I get there and talk to the mechanic, and he says my engine might be bad because I'm having misfires, makes absolutely no sense engines don't just go bad and misfires are certainly not an indication of that. And then he tells me I need new spark plugs and 3 coil packs are bad, 2 things that absolutely cause misfires and are easy fixes, not my engine being completely bad like they so thought. And if I wanted to get my plugs and coils replaced there it would be 1100 DOLLARS, so I went online and got all the parts I need for less than 100$ and will be doing it myself for no extra cost. They get 2 stars only because I didn't actually go through with their services so i cant gauge their workmanship (I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt). Anyway, I called in recently to inquire about a PPI (pre-purchase inspection) on a vehicle; quote, time frame, what they cover, etc. They were very quick in explaining that they do everything, doesn't matter what vehicle. Seems okay...however here is why they earned a less than average score for me.. When attempting to schedule a time to bring the car in, the gentleman i spoke with had a very thick accent and was hard to understand. He also seemed very rushed and hurried to just get me to bring the car in; without first asking any details on the car or where it was coming from. I tried to explain to him that the dealer would bring the car in and before i could finish explaining when, who, and what vehicle, he kept cutting me off (more than once i tried to explain) and said "yeah yeah yeah, we do inspection, ($75 btw for those who want to know) we do all cars, just bring in." This concerns me, as he did not even know WHAT car i was going to drop off, or what areas I would have liked him to pay extra careful attention to. I'm not even sure he understood 100% of what all I was talking about. Before buying a used car, I would HIGHLY recommend getting your vehicle inspected, but that doesnt mean by any average Joe.. I'm Sorry, but I will be taking my business else where to a more experienced shop who would at least appear to understand what my concerns are and who specializes in my specific automaker's vehicles. read more

Alright, the reason they get two stars from me is, I've never had a bad experience with them up until this point. And I've done business with them for years. I'm a diesel mechanic for anyone questioning my knowledge. Things that require a lift, I used to just bring to them. Had a clutch installed, this being a very high performance street clutch (extremely capable for what the engine is putting out currently), less than 6 months ago, but I rode my bike during the summer and recently for a couple months because I had a turbo go out. So there was not that many miles on it. To the point though, I kept having issues with the flywheel coming loose. Now this is the second time, but I'm not willing to go back because they damaged my shift knob, my main seal looks to be leaking again (I had that done with the clutch install), and they want to blame my clutch not working (which it works, perfectly minus the horrible rattling noise from the flywheel being loose) on my parking brake being on all the time, and applying itself more when in motion. Why I have a problem with that is, my parking brake has not worked since I bought the truck. And the vehicle in motion does NOT make the parking brake apply itself. Brandon is a good guy, and so is Hussein. But sometimes he needs to slow down and take a little more time with the customer. I understand warranty work is hated. Believe me, I know, I work in the same field as them but on concrete mixers. But if you do it properly the first time, there wouldn't be any warranty work to do (given no manufacturer defects.) Hussein, I've always felt you've done me right, up until this point. But you've lost future business from me. read more

I would not recommend using Highlands Auto Center as your mechanic. The mechanic working the front desk was nice, but I felt uneasy from the moment I left my car with them. They did not have an official form to fill out when I left my keys with them, and they seemed pretty disorganized and unprofessional as far as checking people in and keeping track of the keys. When they ran the diagnosis on my car, they gave me an estimate of $1700 for labor and parts. I was trying to take care of an issue turning on the check engine light so my car could pass inspection. I still had to pay them $90 for the diagnosis (which is waived when you decide to have them do the services). My dad did the work on my car and took it to be inspected for $75. He told me they suggested work that was completely unnecessary and their estimates for labor alone were outrageous. read more

I've personally dealt with Hussein and Austin, but I'm sure all the people who work there are the same caliber. I've never been treated more honestly when it comes to car repairs. Awesome! Over the top! Superior! All those come to mind. It's a relief being a single Mom to trust what they tell me so explicitly. Austin is a walking encyclopedia it seems of every make, model and engine from older cars to newer models. They do transmission work, preventative maint and general repairs. All of it, across the board. He helps me prioritize work that needs to be done immed. for safety reasons vs work I'll need to do in time. This helps me budget and be in control. When I took my van to a dealership, they tried to "sell" me over $6K of work. I took my quote to Austin and he gave me options, told me what was critical and explained a workable time frame to have it done. It cost me less than half of the dealership quoted price to have a safe, well running vehicle. I've gone to them for a few years now, several different cars in our family, and I've never been anything but relieved and happy with their service. read more

I've just driven my 2000 Honda Civic from Virginia here to Dallas to relocate and I had a number of alerts lighting up my dash. Brandon, working the front desk when I walked in answered all my questions about fees and timeliness about an estimate which was finished in a few hours and Hussein, the mechanic who looked at my car was over-the-top helpful - when I didn't understand the extent of the damage he described, he pulled my car back in, lifted it back up on the jack so I could go underneath and see myself, even pointing to problem spots so I could take pictures. He honestly suggested buying a new car would be the best option for me and even waived the $90 estimate fee, knowing no small repair would be able to fix my little car.
