There is all your usual stuff that you'd expect to find at any diner. From your sandwiches, omelettes, crepes, typical deserts such as cake and pie, to just about anything else you'd expect to find on a menu for a diner. The service was overall fine but nothing super special but it still is a decent diner to go to for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It is better to go around dinner time because then they give you complimentary garlic knots which are delicious. And the televisions they have around the diner are also nice to watch too so you don't feel bored. The only major criticisms I have is that there are times when there are tables that are still very dirty rather its from dirty dishes or too much dust lying around the diner. Another criticism is that the deserts maybe dry from sitting in the fridge too long which is disappointing because they look delicious. The final criticism is that it can be noisy too inside when its always busy. But that is expected as that happens anywhere. In the end, its a solid diner to go to. But it's not the best diner out there as there are plenty other better options for food and to hang out.

I of course used Yelp to find a good diner on my drive from New Brunswick to Atlantic City. I found Broad Street located in Keyport not far from the Garden State Parkway. It's your "classic" diner which has that 1950's vibe with the exterior and interior decor. Elvis paraphernalia is featured here. They had a busy lunch crowd. I sat at the counter and ordered a McCaffrey Wrap which comes with grilled chicken, bacon, cheddar jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and honey mustard. It was really good. The side of sweet potato fries were crispy and seasoned just right. The staff were courteous and the service quick. There is a small parking lot that can accommodate about five cars. There was plenty of on street parking. The downtown area was nice and you can take a nice walk after dining here to the waterfront.

DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU HAVE ANY TYPE OF DIETARY RESTRICTION! I am a vegan and I explained to the waitress about my dietary restriction. The Hightstown Diner does not have any substantial vegan options, but it also is not accommodating by any means. I ordered sweet potato fries, expecting them to be vegan as I told the waitress. I got them back and as I was eating them I realized there were a few small shards of bacon in the fries. This may not seem like a big deal to someone who makes the active choice to consume meat, but it was upsetting to me because I had made it clear I did not want meat. The waitress was very apologetic, and told us where the manager was. We got up to pay, and after paying it was my intention to bring it to the attention of the manager. We explained the situation and it did not seem like the manager cared very much. She was having a side conversation with a waitress, but once we got her full attention she acted very laxidasical about it. She even went as far as to say, "Yeah, we are a diner. We don't do any of that vegan or gluten-free stuff". She made it sound like being gluten-free or vegan was a 'fad' instead of a lifestyle. I am very annoyed mostly because she made me feel like a bother. She explained that the fries were fried in the same oil as the bacon. This is upsetting because a lot of vegans can get sick if they eat that by accident. The waitress the manager was talking to chimed in and said that if I had asked then the oil could be dumped. I told her that I had told my waitress to make them vegan. THe manager said, "Yes but then we would have to dump the oil and heat it up again." She made it seem like it would be a big deal. My daughters are both former restaurant servers, so we understand how demanding the job can be and always try to be patient and understanding. We started with coffee, and my daughters both ordered the diner's most popular breakfast sandwich (#1 on the menu). I ordered the lunch special: open-faced tuna, which included a cup of soup. I chose the cream of zucchini, and it arrived quickly and was delicious. After waiting more than 30 minutes for our meals, our server came over and apologized, explaining that the kitchen had mistaken the "#1" breakfast sandwiches for "#4s." While I appreciated the apology, nothing was offered to acknowledge the delay. When the food finally arrived, my daughters enjoyed their meals. Unfortunately, my order was served as a tuna melt rather than the cold open-faced tuna I had anticipated . The menu description mentioned cheese, but it was not described as a tuna melt. I personally don't enjoy hot tuna, so while I ate some of it, I didn't finish my meal. The coleslaw on the side was also very bland and could have used more seasoning or tang. After the sandwich mix-up, it seemed like our server avoided our table. After waiting several minutes, I asked for the check and dessert. She also seemed unaware that my lunch special included dessert. We took the rice pudding to go, and it was excellent. I truly wanted to love this experience because the diner has so much charm. Unfortunately, we left disappointed. Our bill was approximately $80 for two breakfast sandwiches with home fries, one tuna lunch special, an order of bacon, and three coffees. Mistakes happen, but I felt there was a missed opportunity to recover the experience. Even a small gesture--removing the coffees, offering a dessert, or another courtesy--would have gone a long way toward making us feel like our time and patience were valued.

I never make it to dessert because the portions are so generous but they do have a great selection that always looks tempting in the display case. This place always feels like home and it is one of those diners you can always count on for a great meal and a pleasant experience.
