OK. So, we ordered a simple breakfast sandwich - eggs, ham, cheese - side of home fries (to go). I have never ever seen my husband throw away a breakfast sandwich before. He didn't even eat half. The home fries were dry and tasteless - also got tossed. I drive by and I cannot for the life of me, figure out how the parking lot seems to get packed on the weekends. Two stars is a generous designation for this historic diner. While it's easy to be charmed by the old school ambience, the food was barely there. We ordered a chicken parm plate that was bland, a Athenia burger platter, plopped on top of a dismal, pretend Greek salad, and several soups which came from a can. The waitress was harried and the men's room smelled like one of those damp humid corners of Penn Station circa 1980. There must be better options in this charming town. read more

Well I started off with the matzo-ball soup and let's just say it was flavorless to say the least. My sister got a short stack of pancakes which she only recieved 2, she described them as the taste of epsom salt. My aunts grilled ham and cheese and mine was not terrible until we found a large black hair. As you can see nothing complicated was ordered but somehow it was to them. Completely disappointed. About a year ago, I started going here and it was really great - great food and service. The passed 2 times I have gone have been very different. Although the food was still good the service was horrible. It literally took 3x longer to order and get my food than it took before. I like this place. It reminds me of old school box car diners (yes, it is literally that small). I wouldn't bring a client here, as it caters to locals (not that I don't love Hightstown, but its just not fancy is what I'm trying to say) I had breakfast here with my husband about 2 weeks ago (we were playing hookie from work :), the staff was friendly, the coffee perfect and always filled, and the food yummy. The prices were a good, but we ending up spending $40 on breakfast for 2 somehow, maybe we are just greedy lol, oh and HUGE portions! Amazing! My boyfriend and I were in the area and stopped in for a late lunch and everything was so fresh and delicious. We both got burgers and they were clearly fresh and homemade. No frozen food here! Also the fries were cooked perfectly. The staff was super friendly and made us feel right at home. Very reasonably priced, our two burgers and drinks came to about $24. Stopped in around noon on a Saturday with my nephew. The diner was about half full at the time. The wait staff was young and our waitrress in particular seemed to have minimal knowledge of the menu. My nephew had matzo ball soup which he really enjoyed followed by a cheeseburger that he thought was average at best but he really liked the french fries which were well cooked and hot. I chose breakfast and had scrambled eggs with corned beef hash on the side. The toast and home fries were cold. Eggs laid on top of the hash, which had decent flavor. Guy fieri struck out on this one! Quite possibly the worse service we ever experienced. My fiancé and I stopped on our way back from NYC. We had seen the place on tv. We were one of 3 tables of customers in the place but it still took 15 min to give us a menu. Gave us the wrong soup. Salad plate was obviously dirty. Main dishes came out at different times. It's a scam. 1.My boyfriend ordered a bowl of chili, the waiter said it should be enough for him because he always just eat a bowl of chili for one meal. But then they served us a bowl as small as a cup! It wasn't hot either. They charged us $6+ for that freaking tiny bowl of chili? And you think my boyfriend has a bird stomach that he can be full by eating that tiny bowl of chili? 2. I ordered a "doctor's choice" omelette, it was half size of the Greek omelette as I saw on the pictures on yelp. Didn't come with any toast. (No home fries and other sides either, because it's a doctor's choice I guess,but if it's a doctor's choice, why was it so greasy ?) didn't know what's wrong with me that I would order it. Both of us feel so hungry after the meal. 3. When paying the bill, the cashier asked me how much tip I wanna give. I said 2.15, she charged me 2.50. What can I say? Ask for that 35 cents back? I know that this place is a diner so the expectations shouldn't be too high but I really can't handle this place. It is very small and the staff will often talk annoyingly loud at the counter and its hard to tune them out. The staff also acts like they are on another planet and its hard to get any service in between the initial order taking and the check. I say that if you want cheap diner food just order takeout. The food is typical diner food. I usually get an omelet and I like them (my reason for giving this place 2 stars and not 1). It is what has brought me back several times but not anymore. The atmosphere has just gotten to be too much and I will get my omelet's elsewhere. read more

Worst meal I've had in a long time. Baked potato came out with a hard brown interior. I explained the problem and asked for a new one. It too was brown and hard on the inside. Both were over cooked and/or reheated over such a long period of time that they turned to tasteless crud. I ultimately asked for what is described on the menu as homemade mashed potatoes. Big mistake. They were clearly from a box of flakes and were 'homemade' only to the extent that the flakes were mixed with water in the kitchen. The fried flounder was a small thin piece of fish coated in a dry over spiced crust. My guess is that it was prepared in a factory and flashed fried onsite. My wife's meal was no better. We have eaten at this dinner every year as we travel back and forth to Florida. The food, and staff, have gone down hill in recent years. Today it reached an all time low. We decided to try this as we were in the Princeton area and saw this on Guy's DDD. Fantastic! As mentioned previously, the portions are huge, there is a lot to choose from, the waitress was friendly and attentive and the diner itself was clean and cute. We had the buffalo burger and the rueben turkey burger and neither of us had any complaints. It was typical diner food, as it should be considering it's a diner. I think a lot of the negative comments come from people who aren't used to diners and what they offer, especially if they are comparing them to chain restaurants. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there but if you're in the area, it's worth a stop. read more

Now this was a fun place. Love the retro decor and the grilled cheese with bacon I had was great along with the split pea soup. Its funny I'm not a die hard fan of split pea but I really enjoyed their variation on it. We had the worst experience today for lunch. The food came out late, bread 15 minutes after eggs, asked three times for a refill of an iced tea, was told an item was not available ordered, another was told that half the order, orzo noodles had been run out of after the shrimp came out without the orzo. Rare burger came out half well done.. Soup came out cold. We paid for the meal, told them we will never be back and the manager smirked and said nothing. I have eaten there 25 times. When a tv show visits a diner or any eating establishment they focus on the one or two things the diner does best. In this case it was breakfast and specifically, corned beef hash. We took a ride and order eggs with the homemade hash and it was terrific. Freshly made, crispy and worth the drive. For the reviewer from Mass I love the idea of the road trip and trying places you've seen, we do it all the time while traveling. Id just recommend that you stick to what the specialty was. Other then that, the diner is small, service is nice, its a bit out of the way as others have mentioned but go get a breakfast wrap or stick with the Corned beef hash, the owner is making it from scratch every morning. We went to this diner on our way to pick up our puppy only because it was recommended by "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives". The particular episode that recommended this place showed that the corn beef hash was made fresh and that it was incredible---same w/ the waffle. The corn beef hash was probably the worst we've ever had! There was nothing fresh about it at all. It was like mashed potatoes actually. I think it was worse than canned corn beef hash since it was sooo soggy! The waffle was ok, but definitely nothing to write home about. It was probably the most disappointing experience we've ever had from a diner recommendation. "Triple D" probably was paid to have this diner show up on tv and recommend it. While driving along the NJ Turnpike last night, my husband and I decided to visit a local restaurant suggested by The Food Network's Diner, Drive-ins & Dives. We pulled into the parking lot, a table of patrons looked out, and then the lights went off. It was 8:40 pm on a Tuesday night. A waiter looked out the window at us and paused - she was probably checking out our molars from our gaping wide open jaws. I've never experienced anything like this before. Who does this???? Certainly, this is not acceptable customer service. We very much would have appreciated the waiter coming out to tell us that the restaurant was closed and they were waiting for the last table to finish up. In hind sight, this was a good thing. I'd never recommend patronizing this restaurant and glad Hightstown Diner didn't have the opportunity to get our business. They don't deserve your business either! read more

The Hightstown Diner is a small town diner right smack dab in the geographical center of the great state of New Jersey. The food is good, the service is good, and the atmosphere reminds me of "Cheers"-where everybody knows your name. It is a great local eatery with the best chocolate pudding on the planet. I would also recommend the roast turkey dinner, steak, tuna melt, cheese steaks, burgers, fries, onion rings, navy bean soup, and cheesecake. They also make awesome milkshakes! The lunch and early bird dinner specials cannot be beat and are an amazing value, especially with today's economy. The patrons are mainly locals and they all bring a great hometown atmosphere. If you are looking for good food at good prices in a small town atmosphere in a metro area, then you must try the Hightstown Diner and say hi to a wonderful throwback to a simpler time. read more

I am convinced that the people who have written positive reviews either lack taste buds, and/or perspective. I've tried this place twice, and after my last visit, am completely convinced that I will never return. I disliked the service and the food. First and foremost, this place is small and you feel compacted when you sit inside. The two times that I visited, I never had the distinction of sitting in the front where there is lighting. I was sat in a very dark and gloomy back room. A room without any ambiance. You had the choice of looking at a few dusty pictures of former diner glory, or an outside backdoor which was opened a crack. This room had a very musty smell as well. You aren't given much space to sit, and it's impossible to hold a private conversation. I was forced to listen to a conversation about politics, one which was antiquated and not very welcoming. It took an unreasonable long time to receive service. I got the impression that we were "out of sight and out of mind". The last time that I visited, I had ordered the chicken fingers. A meal that is typically impossible to get wrong. The chicken fingers that I got were severely undercooked (clear and pink). The side of french fries omitted any kind of flavor. My company wasn't impressed with the burger that they got either. But seriously, how do you get chicken fingers wrong? Just throw them in the deep fryer and push 5 minutes. The cost of this terrible lunch came close to 30 dollars (including the tip that I left). I get the impression that it was featured on Food Network because Hightstown looks nice on film, and the fact that this diner has been a mainstay for decades (not sure how). Clairmont on Route 130 N is such a better establishment. Generous portions, generous cost, and a cleaner and nicer look. read more

Well we were on our way back from Englishtown and decided to stop here since it was on Triple D and man was it AWFUL! First off its dirty, second the food is awful and third, they should be ashamed of themselves calling this food. First the soup, we got the onion soup that came with our sandwich, it was inedible. Sent back and got the seafood bisque and that was horrible. There was maybe 3 pieces of "seafood" in it and I could literally taste the flour they must have used to thicken it up. Next the sandwich was halfway decent, we got a chicken cheesesteak on a pita which was a real piece of chicken, not the minute steak. I asked for ranch on the side. The waitress said yes indeed it was their homemade ranch when it turns out it was tarter. Oh and as I was handing the waitress my plate there was egg yolk on the bottom of my dish and once my fingers felt it I almost threw up! Anywho, never will we ever be back here. read more
