We went to the Hightsown Diner today for breakfast and I ordered Eggs with Sausage with home fries and toast when I received the check I was shocked to see extra 50!cents charge extra for rye toast and I thought it might be a mistake toasted is a no brainer no charge for rye toast any diner in the state and I have been to hundreds of diners in New Jersey and Pennsylvania and New York and never have I been charged extra for rye toast , it's totally unbelievable needless to say never will we go back there ahead !! Came here as one of my last pregnant lady adventures with hubby, we were on our way up to the Englishtown Flea Market and I had the Hightstown Diner bookmarked because of it's feature on DDD. We came in pretty early in the morning and the place only had three people sitting at the bar top, so it was nice and quiet. The diner itself is what you imagine it looked 50 years ago, small, looks like a train car, and homey. The service was very pleasant, two young ladies working as servers and hostess, I was actually really surprised how friendly they were considering it was 7 am and they looked like teenagers. I had read about their incredible hash, so of course that's what I ordered! Hubby ordered a veggie omlette and then we waited. Our meals came with coffee and juice, the juice is concentrate and terrible. I wish I would've skipped it altogether because I hate being wasteful, but there it sat. The coffee was decent, I can't really complain, and considering it was refilled quickly, then I liked it even more. Now for the food.....the omlette was terrible. Really bland, terrible homefries as well. We were unimpressed. As for the corned beef hash, with 2 sunny side up eggs, it was decent. Not excellent, just ok. I really wish I had better things to write about this place, but the food was cooked with no love, which seems ironic if you come here. The whole place is so family oriented and cute, that I wanted my meal to be homey and delicious. I ordered the French onion soup, pastrami and corned beef Ruben, and the light side of the moon cake. The French onion soup was tasty with a generous amount of cheese, croutons, and the right ratio of onion to delicious beef broth. Some teacher friends and I decided to grab some bites at the Hightstown Diner during their early bird hours (2pm-5pm). It was incredible how much delicious food we got for a little over $10! I started with the chicken and rice soup that came with my special. Pretty good and satisfying as most soups go. I ordered the happy hour special Greek omelette (without the feta) which was yummy and filling. It was a giant egg pancake with sausage, onions, peppers, and potatoes that filled the entire plate and was almost 1 inch thick! Dessert was their rice pudding with a huge mountain of whip cream. Yum!! They were out of bread pudding, so the waitress suggested the rice pudding. No regrets! It was awesome! The service was friendly and attentive. We were treated like family even though we were first timers at the diner. Service with a smile :) and we left with smiles after having that great meal with hardly a dent in our wallets! read more

Was driving down from Hudson Valley and was deciding were to get breakfast on the way home...we decided it would be good to start driving... Then it hit me...the Hightstown Diner been there a few months back and had the eggs Benedict...and much to my delight it came out with scratch made hollandaise sauce not the mix variety...(little tip...if your hollandaise sauce is warm or hot it is not authentic) So mind made up drove there and once again ordered the Eggs Benedict and got pretty excited!!! BUT WAIT!!! Today the hollandaise was NOT freshly prepared with eggs and butter it was that warm chicken flavored yellow goop.. Lucky for me I did order it on the side but was extremely disappointed!!! 2 stars for my wife's breakfast she seemed happy! As far as I'm concerned would have a hard time going back...nothing turns me off more than inconsistency...because then you never know what to expect!! read more

Lived in the area for 18 years, passed this place many times. The outside is dated from a remodel, probably the 90's. Inside is more of what the diner looked like originally with exception of updated counter top and booths. On the front of the menu it stated Guy Fieri was here for a triple D episode and he came here specifically for the corned beef hash so I had to try it. It was good, hot, had lots of potatoes, peppers and onions. Not the best I ever had but very good. Eggs were cooked perfectly. The hash browns were awesome! Cooked on the flat top and had a nice crunch to the outer layer and not burnt at all. Wife has the Florentine omelette, egg whites only and said it had lots of flavor. The meal was inexpensive, bill came to $21. We eyed up the desserts. They had individual pies, blueberry, cherry and looked so delicious. Looks like a good reason to come back, cup of coffee and pie! read more

Hightstown Diner is a classic Jersey food emporium in the heart of the old burg by that name. Its stone fascade cannot hide the real treasure this house hides within. Long counter with spinners. Booths along the outer wall. Large fridge displays with tasty looking cakes, pies and puddings. Timeless menu with traditional breakfast and lunch favorites. When I saw they did a Greek Omelet pancake style with six eggs and fresh feta, I knew that was for me. I negotiated the order down to three eggs for a few bucks less. It still completely filled the large plate. Extra feta was spread on top, and the contents were a load of home fries, onions, peppers, tomatoes, Italian sausage and more cheese. It was fantastic. The toasted rye was a nice counterpoint with butter melted throughout, yet still crunchy. Coffee was refilled as often as requested. Hot and strong. Service was what we expect from this cultural forum. Friendly, attentive and ready to joke with the customer. Diners are still prevalent in NJ, and Hightstown has one of the best. read more

June 10 visit. If you rate diners on the quality of food served, along with friendly fast service then Hightstown diner gets five stars. This was my 4th visit in 3 years and I have been remiss in reviewing this cute little place that is only about 2 miles off the Jersey turnpike and well worth the stop. Exit 8 if you are going north, Today I have a five dollar lunch special and I got a grilled cheese on wheat with a cup of Soup or you can get a salad. Both came super fast and super hot and were super tasty. My friend got a veggie omelette which he raved over and his coffee was constantly refilled Although the coffee I ordered wasn't included in the five dollar special, it was refilled often without having to ask. Stopped by for a quick meal and was quite delighted with the results. This place has been around since 1926, and owned by the same family since 1957! AND it was featured on that Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives show. We had a Hot Turkey Plate and a Patty Melt. They were both perfect. The service was friendly and quick. On a cold winter night, it was nice to have a hot water radiator under the table too. Don't listen to those who wanna whine and compare this place to a fine dining restaurant. A friend of mine was showing my around her hometown and suggested we come here for dinner since that was her "childhood memories" spot. The outside could definitely use a remodel, as well as the interior. But it was very classic NJ diner type atmosphere. The menu was huge but we ended up sharing a waitress special - which was french fries, chicken tenders, onion rings, potato skins, and poppers. We also ordered a side of the corned beef hash featured on Diners Drive Ins and Dives. The fried food platter was fine, I would guess mostly frozen items but all cooked pretty well. I've never had corned beef hash before so it was interesting? It was very soft, filled with corned beef, potatoes, onions and peppers. We arrived for lunch, and the Hightstown Diner wasn't crowded.  It's a small diner located in downtown Hightstown.  It was actually featured on Diners, Drive In's and Dives several years ago! Atmosphere: The Hightstown Diner is what you expect in a diner.  Old school tables, booths, and full-length bar.  The outside is all cobblestone.  I liked the menus because they showed the diner when it first opened and a scenic photo. Coffee: The coffee was hot. However, we had to ask a few times for refills.  While good, I could have used a few more, Food: The menu at the Hightstown Diner is medium sized.  They don't have a lot of unique items, but they have everything a New Jersey diner should have: eggs and pancakes, sandwiches and a few seafood entrees if you want. I was craving a Gyro.  I like gyros, but they are definitely one of the messiest sandwiches you can order.  The Gyro platter came with a lot of food: soup, salad as well as French fries.  I knew that would probably be a lot so I opted to sub the fries with the "vegetable of the day" which was carrots. The Gyro itself was great.  I haven't had one in a while, and it was stuffed to the brim with meat, tzatziki sauce, lettuce, tomato.  The salad was rather big for a side.  The romaine lettuce could have been chopped more and easier to eat but other than that good. With the winter, I've been ordering a lot of soups.  Nothing spoke to me, so I decided to try something new: The Greek chicken.  I had no idea what to expect, and it was a cream based soup with chicken and race.  I couldn't locate much chicken, but in all, it wasn't bad. Service: The waitress was extremely friendly, but we could have used far more refills.  For not being overly crowded, it took a while for the food to come out.  Typically, that would haven't been an issue. However, we hadn't planned on staying for over an hour, and it caused us to somewhat rush eating. Summary/Would I Come Back? I liked the Hightstown Diner, and I'll definitely be back again.  While it was slower than hoped, the food and quality were excellent. read more

This review is a sad one I have to make that is very long over due. A little while back, I used to frequent this diner almost every weekend. I'd make the bit of a drive from where I live just to order their (at the time) delicious French toast with cinnamon on it. However, one day I was served French toast with green fuzzy mold all over the bread. I mean, it was so obvious I don't know how it made it out of the kitchen to be served to me. Unfortunately for me I was so hungry and used to getting this meal that as soon as I got it I ate a few bites while talking to my mother across the table and not directly looking at my meal (I was mortified once I saw the mold). When I pointed it out they quickly grabbed the plate and removed it before I could even get a photo and kept claiming it wasn't mold it was "something else" (we all know what mold looks like on bread). Finally they half-apologized and asked if I wanted something else. I was starving and had someplace to go afterwards so I ordered something else. The craziest part is they were extremely rude to me about what happened and still made us pay for our meal (minis the French toast) which I found shocking, especially after allowing a customer to be served moldy bread which I consumed some of and was panicking about becoming sick from it. We were not offered anything to accommodate for the terrible experience (which again I was unsure if I would be sick from what I ate). We left without a formal apology from the manager or owner. I was a loyal customer and they knew that and still treated me this way. It was so sad because I used to come here so often with either my mother or my friend. I haven't been back since. read more

Went into the diner early Sunday morning. Greeted right away and took a booth. Ordered coffee and water. I saw the coffee was Lacas brand from Coffee Associates. The little creamers were from Cream-O-Land. Coffee was good. Ordered two eggs over hard, bacon, home fries and white toast. The bacon was nice and near crispy, eggs were done right and the home fries were slightly burnt the right way. There ketchup bottles were real Heinz Ketchup. The young girl refilled the coffee. They have no napkin dispenser so there's only one napkin and wasn't offered more napkins at anytime. A decent breakfast in an old time sort of blue collar diner at middle of the road diner cost. Hightstown Diner was surprisingly good. The menu looked old and sad, and there weren't a variety of options for salads and wraps--the food we usually end up ordering. However, the quality of the food was very good. The chicken Caesar salad wrap was good but needed more dressing. However, they gave us a side of more dressing when we asked, and then the wrap was very good. The lettuce in the wrap was extremely fresh and very clean looking. (Other diners will sometimes give you wilted lettuce, so this was nice.) The fries that came with it were very good. We got the grilled chicken, mozzarella, and grilled tomato sandwich without the bun. The chicken was cooked perfectly. The side salad we ordered was very fresh also. Service was prompt. The staff wasn't especially talkative or friendly, but they weren't rude at all either. They were just there and doing their jobs. They were very accommodating. Can't complain. read more

Old time little diner. We were passing through from NY and stopped in for a quick bite. All the sandwiches came with a soup. We both had crab soup. We thought it would be thin and red, like Manhattan Clam. This was a creamy crab soup, and surprisingly delicious!! My husband normally just tastes diner soup - this soup he finished!! My husband ordered the Feta Fried cheesticks for an appetizer. Just like mozzarella sticks, but feta cheese - pretty good. As Feta doesn't melt, it stayed solid, not like a stringy mozzarella & still served with a marinara sauce. I ordered a fried chicken wrap with lettuce, tomato and avocado, which was very good. The fries were nice and crunchy. My husband had a bacon cheeseburger that he enjoyed. If we were locals, we would definitely be regulars. read more

Reviews for this place are so skewed that I wasn't sure what to expect but this place is really nice. Stopped in with some family and friends and everything we ordered tasted just fine. For the price we were very happy with portions and taste was good. Granted this is no five star fine dining restaurant but for what they offer it's really close to a 5 star rating for it's specific offerings; cheap eats. Always a favorite for our family. The place is exactly the same as 15+ years ago. Consistently good food, typical diner decor, friendly Waite staff. This team knows how to get a lot done in a small space. My only knock is that it is not as clean as it could be. Basic things like food in the cracks of the seats and dirty window sills. BAD SERVICE Waitress An older lady waitress who works in the mornings with a shitty attitude. She brought me my order wrong when I told her that they prepared it wrong for me, she totally ignored me. The tostada's were burnt I was never offered ketchup or hot sauce. The whole time he didn't bring me more coffee until I asked him, he didn't even go to ask if everything was okay. It is because of employees like that that Businesses Fall. I know Noel The chef is a very good person but with waitresses like that you don't want competition because they alone destroy the business. Went here for lunch today with a business associate. The menu is a standard diner menu. How can they have that many items in their pantry? One of my sons thinks that diners have a huge, walk-in cooler/freezer in order to supply all the items on the menu. All in all, not a bad little diner but it is out of the way and only picks up local traffic or traffic passing by on NJ 33. It is about 1 1/2 miles off of the NJ Turnpike. My Patty Melt was actually quite good (had to explain to my associate, who is from Ireland, what a Patty Melt actually was). We both had soup (chicken noodle and Manhattan clam chowder) which wasn't bad. The chowder could have been a little hotter. Not a bad stop for a quick lunch. read more
