Ate there a couple times in the last month but only sat at the counter. Went in there tonight with a friend and sat in the booth. Within minutes of our order coming the roaches came across the table from the seat cushions by the dozens. The place is disgusting. So I left a lukewarm review on this diner some time ago. It was my one and only Yelp review that featured a bathroom critique. The food has always been good here but the condition of the restroom was awful. On our last visit, and there have been several since that review, the bathroom was just fine. I used to go to the diner a few years ago but I moved away. Well I ordered the fish sandwich. It arrived without tartar sauce, lemon or coleslaw. I asked for tartar sauce and ketchup for my fries. The fries were the only enjoyable item I had. The fish was breaded frozen fish. The tartar sauce was tzatziki sauce which I didn't care for on fish. They also charge for using a credit/debit card instead of cash. I will not be back. read more

Revisit #4 Awful! Stay away. The fries were hard and raw. Waitress, again no apology took them back. They attempted to cook them further. No improvement; almost white looking in appearance! Now I understand why at lunch this place was almost empty. Time for a new Diner! Ok. Revisit. The bathroom odor is completely gone. However, seriously the bathroom could use a major makeover. Throwing paint on rust that's bubbling is nasty. Put some money aside for capital improvements for sure! Increased my rating as the urine odor is gone! Revisit #2. We all have our biases, preconceptions and assumptions; I certainly have more than my own shares of them. However, as long as we are aware of them, there is no problem, is there? It is like playing pool with a handicap, reversed. One of my longstanding, hardcore and absolute belief was that American food was inedible as a rule, and diners - a.k.a. greasy spoons - which serve them, could not be anything more than at most bearable and serviceable; even then, with the caveat of being equidistant from any other possible dining options. On the other hand, I had often wondered and fantasized about the incredible and ingenuous food, which the ever-aggrandizing Wolfe had continuously wolfed down, prepared by Fritz and envisioned by Wolfe - i.e. blueberries-fed chicken - in the gastronomic world, as existed on West 35th Street (in Rex Stout's mind, unfortunately). Was food better back then, before the mass production kicked in after World War II and sucked the United States into a gustatory Dark Age*? *Of which I wonder if we are still in. I had intentionally stopped by at Hightstown Diners to write it off as a joke, but now I am contently writing it up. Five Pancakes with Corned Beef Hash I am not one who is fussy about the appearance of food. While I sympathize with the trauma one may feel at being presented a whole monkey head (I think this is where I may have to draw the line, in terms of esthetics only, however), it is all about the flavor. Nevertheless, I was slightly put off by the unassuming ivory plate (with many scratches) of pale and limp looking pancakes, stacked on top of each other, and the little paper cup of butter - paper cup, no less. Sighing inwardly, I took the plunge; my knife surprisingly encountered a bounce, which made the cutting a little tricky because of the intangible resistance. If I applied too much force, I would start tearing the pancake, instead of cutting it. Strange I thought, then I tentatively put a wedge of my diner pancake. It was a revelation: the pancake was fluffy, elastic and gaseous all in one. Especially the last characteristic warrants further description: it was akin to eating a marshmallow - the gradual release of the trapped air. While the flavor of the pancake itself was subtle - plain flour, eggs and milk, nothing fancy, the inherent sweetness of the milk and flour, barely touched with sugar, matched perfectly with the generic pancake syrup. The elasticity of the pancake, in fact, prevented the over-soaking of the pancakes so they would not be soggy, even in the face of a syrupy avalanche. Could the pancake be made more flavorful? Yes, of course, there is no doubt. However, it certainly and firmly had earned its place in the middle of nowhere in New Jersey. The renowned corned beef was very simple: corned beef, potatoes, onions and green peppers. At two o'clock in the afternoon, the hash was regrettably missing the crisp exterior I had been told from the slow-cooking on the grill, but the flavors were direct and plentiful, and not in the least greasy. French Dip An uncomplicated sandwich of crusty, lean French roll with a three-quarters inch thick stack of well-done roasted beef arrived with its own jus and largely cut fries, crowding another thick, ivory diner plate (where do they find these things?). Despite the appearance of promised dryness (perhaps there was, but I would never know) and mediocre taste, the roasted beef sandwich was full of strong bovine flavor and moist, but not soggy, after dipping into the liquid beef. On the one hand, the leanness of the meat made it not overwhelming or clogging; on the other hand, the leanness of the bread prevented it from over-soaking and sagging. In effect, the bread absorbed just sufficient jus to re-flavor and re-hydrate the beef and tenderize the bread. The mashed garlic rubbed on the inside of the bread perfumed every bite. Compared to such grandiose performance, the mediocre cole slaw and fries quickly faded into the background like the nondescript landscape in Mona Lisa (although of much interest to the scholars, no doubt). The very lack of greasiness in their preparation of food will give Hightstown Diner the standing to sue the colloquial "greasy spoon" as defamation. read more

What a joke...I ordered a "bowl" of chili and it was half empty and cold. It was barely the size of a cup for $6?! I really want to know who ate the the rest of it cause they should pay half! I travel a lot and I love to eat at out of the way joints and non chained Restaurants. I saw Hightstown on Diners Drive ins and Dives and drove out of the way to go here. I must say that the corned beef hash was to die for, it was amazing and you can tell it was homemade and fresh. The eggs Bennies were also delish. The service was great I had not only my waitress come by several times and ask me if I needed anything or how everything was but the manager and two other waitresses did too. This looks like it caters to the locals and was a very busy place at lunch time... If I lived in New Jersey this would be a frequent spot for me too read more

I've never been to this diner until today when my brother-in-law took me there. Diners somehow come up with amazing food, and the best ones seem to be in Jersey. The Reuben I ordered was simply outstanding. I used to live in a state where the best Reuben was at a national chain restaurant. This diner served a Reuben that left others trying to catch up. It was loaded with both corned beef and pastrami, not to mention the Swiss cheese. They also served fresh onion rings which couldn't be beat. Driving from MA to VA, husband & I decided to try to stop at a few places featured on Guy Fierri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives"--this was the only place we made it to, unfortunately. Maybe it was because it was featured on TV that we had higher expectations than normal diner fare, but really, I wouldn't have been impressed at all without knowing anything about that. Their menu is huge, and tries to cover everything--they have everything from chicken gyro (?What is that?) to burgers and gravy dishes. My husband's bacon cheeseburger was probably the most unremarkable burger ever--no spices, seasoning, just round-shaped hamburg with enough bacon to kill a person. Fries were decent. I had the grilled cheese, which was exactly what one would expect. Sodas come in tiny glasses with only one refill, which was rather disappointing. The diner itself was pretty classic, but a bit dingy; service was friendly, though our waitress couldn't recommend any dish. And be prepared that you have to tell them what tip you'd like to give if you're using a credit card; no write-in tip space. As we were leaving, we decided to institute a diner rule--you're a good diner if you're better than Friendly's. You're a not-so-good diner if you're worse than Friendly's. I have been to this diner prior to the Foodnetwork piece. Like the other reviewers said they have a big menu. I thought the food was decent but way overpriced for the location and portion, maybe they should cut down on the menu and specialize in specific dishes. I went back recently to try their famous corn-beef hash, while it was tasty but it was a little too salty for me and pricey ($almost $4 for a small portion). I also had the Spanish omelet and wasn't impressed. Overall, you'll probably find a better diner in the area like the Americana. read more

Oh Hightstown Diner... how the townies love thee. As my great grandmother always says... "I can just go to Hightstown Diner and get a full dinner for $8.25" As you can imagine, you get what you pay for. Sort of blah taste on all of the food which is what older native New Jerseyans are accustomed to. Location is a plus if you want the experience of eating in a true Jersey Diner. Stopped here on our first ever "Triple D" road trip from NYC to Orlando. We ate what Guy ate, that's the rule of the trip. Two us shared the Original Eggs Benny over Housmade Corned beef Hash. The eggs were perfect so was the Hollandaise. The hash had great flavor but some house it wasn't warm, like at all. I like my food hot, to the point where I can see steam rising from it so that was my only disappointment. If your are doing a foodie tour I would recommend. Came back to visit my high school campus next door last month, April 2013. I still remember in 2003 when I was senior, my gf and I came in to have lunch on Saturday, and it was packed. About 5 mins into me raising my hand to get someone to get the check for us, a gentleman at the bar cried, "hey, let me get the check. You've waited too long and you don't deserve that." And so we got a free meal. I wished I'd ordered more food. Not sure who that gentleman was. I thanked him profusely. So anyway I come back on this quiet Sunday and I notice again a case of obesity amongst people in the area, and overall nothing has changed...except I get my check this time without having to wait forever. I'm a regular here for several years now and I haven't reviewed yet. Ownership has changed three times, and the new owners, probably for the last six months, have stepped it up. The food is good for what you pay and very consistent. They kept a lot the same and then added some new things and it's all been great. Omelettes for breakfast usually and a variety of entrees for dinner like the meatloaf, the pork chops and more have all been great. It's a diner that puts out good diner food. read more

This is a hidden gem! I am a huge diner fan .. This one is excellent! Everything in home made on the premises and the food tastes like it. Portions are generous and you get a lot of extras, like a cup of home made soup or a fresh salad. Service is friendly and fast. Prices are very reasonable. We were taking my grandson to the Hightstown Library for s sing along. Decided to stop here because we were short on time and figured a diner would push out the meals pretty quickly. Both my wife and I had eggs and home fries. Both our meals came out in a timely fashion. My wife always requests well done home fries and hers were done as requested. I requested eggs over easy as did my wife. They were done as requested. We ordered silver dollar pancakes for the grandson. There were six of them and they were a nice size for a 4 year old. My grandson likes to fold his pancakes and dip them in syrup. The waitress was very prompt when we asked her for a small bowl for dipping. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive. I have been to the Hightstown diner many times for breakfast. It has been featured in Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives some time ago, but I was a frequent guest long before I knew that fun fact. This diner is never super packed when I go; in fact, I can always get seated right away or at least within 5 minutes. I love how homey it feels and that it's been around for so long, it's a testament to how good the food is and how it's the heart of hightstown. I always order a Western Omelet which comes with home fries and a side of toast with butter. It never fails to be delicious. We always split a belgian waffle and bacon. The belgian waffle is light, airy, and taste great. The bacon is usually crispy and just the way I like it. The home fries are not the greatest I've ever had, but it's good. This time someone ordered the belgian waffle a la mode and it was a young child's dream breakfast packed with lots of sugar. The staff is always friendly, and the atmosphere is inviting. Overall, hightstown diner is a great place to enjoy a homey and hearty breakfast. read more

We love this place! Fast seating, fast service, coffee refills, everything a diner should be. Always come here for breakfast food, especially omelettes, though the lunch menu is popular. Food is served in large portions and is consistently delicious. Also, it is a good value and I would recommend it over the other local diners. It is also a very popular place and they have early bird dinner specials too. Waitress took 7 minutes to ask me if I wanted a drink and bring menu because she was so engrossed in conversation with customer. Clearly she thought her and gossip was more important than taking my order. When she finally took my order she held it in her hand for at least five more minutes and went back to her conversation with the patron. We had a breakfast dinner at this diner on Saturday nite and thoroughly enjoyed it. I had eggs benedict and it was great. My husband had the sausage and eggs and was pleased that the sausage was not spicy and cooked to perfection. As it was a very rainy nite, the diner was not crowded. All the waitresses were very friendly and attentive. It was so enjoyable that we went back the next morning for breakfast and again enjoyed it. I had the bagel and lox and the bagel was toasted to perfection with plenty of lox and cream cheese. If we are ever up that way again, we will definitely return for a great meal and wonderful atmosphere as we love diners! read more

As far as diners go, you can't beat this place. I am stuck in Freehold on business. I stopped by last night on a whim on my way back to my hotel. Glad I did. Very clean, very quaint atmosphere. Super friendly staff. Unusually so for New Jersey from my visit thus far. This place has some real history. 85 years in business at the same location. Must be doing it right. The food was awesome. I had the meatloaf special. 3 or 4 slices of meatloaf covered in a real(not canned) mushroom gravy. You can tell they use fresh mushrooms. Green beans were also fresh from the garden vs canned stuff in most places. My meal came with a home made lintel soup that was amazing, Bread pudding, salad & a beverage for $12. Best diner I've been to in years. I'm going back again tonight and this time I'm bringing a friend. There isn't much in this little town but Hightstown Diner is worth the trip. p.s. For those I see have posted bad things about the service, well, there is a new waitress there who was as sweet as they come. Her name escapes me but I do remember Becca. Three of us went to diner on a Saturday. There were more staff than customers. It was an order of 2 sandwiches and one large salad. Their's were served, but not my grilled chicken sandwich. I waited and waited and all I got from surly waitress was attitude, no apologies, explanations---nothing. Finally came out after my friends were more than halfway through there's (got pictures to prove it,) The chicken was 3 very flat pieces together so no excuse for it to have taken so long to cook. Food is mediocre diner fare, not worth the trip despite what Guy Fieri thinks! And as a former waitress who worked as a waitress for years, diners included, I stiffed her (that means no tip) It has to be pretty bad service for me to do that because I know how hard a job it is. I was going to NJ for a family reunion and selected this off of Guy's Diner's, Drive-ins and Dives. I have a lot of negatives and only a few positives, so I'll start with those first: Positives: 1. Our server, a male who'd only been there for two weeks was friendly and sweet. Very attentive. 2. It appeared clean. 3. Portion sizes are large and so is the menu, if you want it they probably had it. Negatives: 1. If I had one word to describe the food here it would be "Tasteless", if I had a second it would by "Yucky". Based on what I saw of the other diners this place caters to the senior citizens of the town, and that probably explains why nothing I ordered had any seasoning what so ever. We got an appetizer platter to split, which consisted of very thin mostly breading chicken strips (no taste, no salt), jalapeno poppers (which the jalapeno fell out of on first bite because there was very little cheese), potato skins which appeared to be good but yet again lacked any seasoning what so ever, onion rings (which I passed on). I got the roast beef wrap with Thousand Island dressing and red onions which I didn't finish because the thousand island which could have added some flavor had been clearly watered down. 2. The other servers were down right rude. My dad tried to ask one of the ladies for something and she straight up ignored him. I guess she couldn't be bothered with helping a table that wasn't hers, not that the place was overly busy it was 3 pm on a Friday. 3. It clearly became obvious why the women servers (three of them) had attitudes; it appeared that the owner's kids were there to watch things. First a Hispanic male, probably around 17 and his girlfriend came in and where in and out of the kitchen answering the phone etc. When he got ready to leave his sister and a friend came, his sister answered the phones and rang us up. You could tell the women servers were upset, I don't know if the restaurant had recently been bought out and they were bitter or if something had happen previously in the day, but the tension in the restaurant was so thick I could cut it with a knife. 4. The three lady servers when out to have a smoke and a bitch while we were there. Only the young blonde came back and washed her hands. I wouldn't go back. I don't know what the hell Guy ate or what letter he received to get him there, but I can imagine he won't go back either. read more

My wife and I had breakfast there this past Saturday and OMG this was Easily the ABSOLUTE WORST breakfast I have EVER had! Almost scarred for life bad! This place DOES NOT make fresh corned beef hash - that segment on Diner's Drive In's and Dives was for sure staged as I know corned beef out of a can and what they served was ABSOLUTELY of the canned variety. The only places where you can be sure to have the real thing in New Jersey is The Mad Batter in Cape May or Colonial Diner in East Brunswick. As for Hightstown Diner it was beyond disappointment we will NEVER go back there again. This place is only for locals - if you have to go even 5 minutes out of your way NOT WORTH IT! I just went here for diner with my friends and the food was amazing but most importantly the 2 women working there were the nicest people I've met in a long time.
