We tried this cute little place for breakfast a few weeks backl ordered the corned beef hash,was a little dissapointed,it was thin slices of cornedbeef and cabbage with potatoes(potatoes were great) on the side,maybe l should have read the menu alittle closer,came with a really good coffee cake too.But l will be back to try the patio when the weather breaks and to order one of the other sandwiches on the menu.Give it a try! read more

My husband and I have lived in the neighborhood for 16 years and our visit to the Highway House this evening was a most welcome surprise! The atmosphere was cozy , the service professional and our entrees were absolutely delicious. I was especially impressed with the homemade pasta - unbelievably fresh ! The homemade split pea soup was the best I'd ever tasted and the wings were incredibly delectable. I was expecting just another run of the mill burger joint , all of which I have dutifully tried in the name of supporting local businesses, but Highway House was a fabulously atypical experience . To the wine list that finally "gets it" and the promisingly evolving ambiance I say welcome to the neighborhood and offer a resounding round of applause! read more

All of the food options seem to come breaded, and fried, so everything we ordered was extremely greasy. I guess that makes for late night drunk food, but not pleased with the food selection, and the amount of grease it comes with. read more

After going to the Half Acre takeover at Iron Horse (which was awesome) the wife and I decided to hit up one more local bar for a nite cap. We've been wanting to check this place out as we like to go out and we definitely like to support the local scene. Upon entering in it looked like a nice, clean place had a solid tap of craft beers and liquor selection behind the bar. However after waiting and waiting to be served at both the bar and then at a table we were completely ignored over other people sitting at the bar and other tables. We tried to get the attention of the bartender and servers but continued to be ignored. Not sure why as we were ready to order drinks with cash in hand, but they were straight up ignoring us. Totally rude and awful way to conduct a business. Must avoid. read more

I ordered the grilled veggie sandwich and when it came out it was SO soggy it couldn't be picked up and it was not good at all. Our waitress didn't come to see how everything was until about 15-20 minutes after she dropped off the food, she was the only waitress and it was crowded so I'm not terribly upset about that but when she gave us our check and asked how things were I told her it was bad and I didn't like it so she apologized and offered me something else. My family was done eating and I wasn't going to make them wait so I could order something else so I didn't get anything, seeing that I didn't get another sandwich the original one should have been taken off my check especially since only two bites were taken of the original soggy gross sandwich. Came for dinner on a Friday of Lent. My friend that wanted not to eat meat ordered the fried shrimp special. The fried shrimp was wrapped in bacon. He got 6 huge shrimp that were good, too breaded for his likes. It was served with very good mashed potatoes and veg. I got the hamburger, ordered it medium rare, but it came well done. The meat was good and moist considering it was well done. It is served on a Kaiser roll. Nothing special. Morrisons is so much better for a burger. We had the cheese curds to start which were delicious in almost a tempura batter. Nice wine list. Cute little place, very nice waitress. read more

Just giving everyone a heads up on Highway House. The wife and I went to Highway House to have dinner I believe it was Tuesday (12-2 ). We are the only ones in there mind you. The server comes over to ask what we would like to drink, we said we are ready to order everything we come here a lot. So we order drinks (lemonade & Chardonnay) , APPETIZER of 2 fried cheese curds , and dinner of chicken wrap and Polynesian Chicken Salad. Not to complicated. At this time another couple comes in and sits at the bar. The server goes over to them and starts welcoming them to the establishment no big deal. Now in the mean time we are still waiting for our drinks which have already been ordered. 5 Minutes later she yells across the bar ( what where your drinks again) After the couple already have their drinks. Ok again no big deal. NOW 5 min after we get our drinks here comes the appetizers AND 1 minute after that THE DINNERS. We said whats this? Shes like its your food, I know that but usually apps come out first then the dinner later. The response was priceless, " oh he does that all the time" . WELL if someone does it all the time SOMEONE should tell the cook THAT'S not how it is done. Again I was hungry so no big deal. But then the other couple who was in there said the same thing when they got their apps and dinner at the same time also. NOW comes THE GOOD PART 2nd bite into the chicken wrap I thought I had a piece of hair in my mouth I start to pull out a hair out of my mouth (approx 3 in ) and I'm like no way I'm imagining it. Go in for the 3rd bite and this time another hair (approx 4 in. ) comes out of my mouth and I spit out the food and place the hair on the napkin. WE GOT UP SAID GIVE ME THE CHECK server said don't worry about it and we WALKED OUT NEVER to return again. LONG story short be VERY CAREFUL of hair in the food. read more

First time there. It was nice sitting outside & the service was good. I originally ordered an Absolut & lemonade. I took one sip & almost gagged! She said the bartender before her had made the lemonade & OBVIOUSLY FORGOT TO ADD WATER TO THE CONCENTRATE!!! I knew the minute I saw it something was wrong since it was bright yellow & looked thick! She kindly got me an Absolut & soda. However, $7 for a drink with maybe a drop of vodka?!?!? I'm a bartender, unacceptable! The soup & bruschetta were very good. Been here a few times now and every time has been a great experience. Love the atmosphere and the staff is so friendly, especially the manager. She always has a smile and is very attentive to her staff and customers. The food is awesome!!! Cheese curds with ranch and jalapenos, the best! My favorite are the fish tacos, cod is always fresh and love the sauce that they add. Have had the chicken wrap and the shrimp and grits appetizer, both are amazing! The place inside is clean and the outdoor patio is beautiful. Perfect to enjoy a Bloody Mary (which are so good!) or a cold beer. This has been a welcome addition to our neighborhood! Had the most amazing seafood chowder last night, loaded with large shrimp, clams and potatoes! The portion was so big I ended up taking most of it home. Started off with fried cheese curds, also amazing. And the desserts are all homemade by the owner, Lisa. The chocolate cake is to die for. Just discovered this unique restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect and they have a beautiful patio that's so cozy you don't feel like you are even in the city. The food is fresh and homemade. There is a large variety of beers and wines. They make homemade burgers that are juicy and tasteful. The food you are served is plenty I can make another meal with leftovers. Had an assortment of appetizers that were all 10+. Tried the breakfast last weekend out of this world. Fresh homemade coffee cake...service was great. The menu has appetizing choices. This is definitely my new spot. If you haven't visited Highway House you must go. It's worth your time and money. read more

My wife and I stopped in for a few drinks and ended up with a great experience.Lisa gave us some corned beef sliders to try that had a little creative taste twist but were fantastic. I love this new Norwood Park bar and restaurant! The food was excellent, as was the friendly service. The best surprise was the great wine selection. My husband and I like to sit in the bar area and order an appetizer or light dinner. The problem I usually encounter is a mediocre wine selection - just the opposite here! I had the fish tacos which were plentiful and done to perfection. My husband ordered the grilled cheese which he said was good, accompanying fries were great. Great to see a new restaurant and bar in the neighborhood, but it's nothing special. It's a friendly atmosphere, catering to a 50+ crowd and, in some cases, families. Menu is OK, though not terribly diverse. Service was decent. They'll need to try something special to set themselves apart. read more

The staff here said it best, a nice little place off the beaten path, with a loyal neighborhood fan base. They grind their own meat, make their own fries and chips, make desserts from scratch, have top shelf options without top shelf prices, and it's all wrapped up with a great staff. My husband and I were looking at houses in the neighborhood, and were starving...so glad we stopped in. The pecan (yes, PECAN) burger with manchengo cheese was ridiculous....not only do you taste the roasted garlic which melds wonderfully with pecans and cheese, but the ground beef is FRESH. Never have I ever been able to taste the difference in ground meat, but I've been schooled! He had a grilled chicken salad which was also amazing. We indulged in the homemade apple crisp...you can taste the freshness of the apples. Worth waiting 15 minutes for it to bake. Not much else going on in the neighborhood, but that's why they get to know their loyal customers. Love love love read more

First time I went there for happy hour sat at one of the tables by the bar the TVs were on and wished they played some music in the background the mood was very boring. Got the hamburger sliders which was just OK. Nothing special about the place. We went there a week later for happy hour sat at the same place with two other people in the restaurant this time but this time the news was on but they played music but it was 60's 70's music, I just wasn't feeling it. I don't know what type of customers the owner is catering towards. We ordered the southwest egg roles which was ok and the bacon artichoke dip which smelled and I only could imagine tasted like dog food and we left the whole dip, if it was good we would have had no problem eating it. Probably won't go back again which is a shame because it's in the neighborhood. There are better bars and restaurants on Milwaukee Ave which we will be going to for now on. read more
