Sad to say like so many others, this was my last visit to Houston's. Been going there for 45 years, like others miss the Houston managed Houston's experience. Helped them a time or two during COVID carryout times. Corporate Hillstone management never met the bar for me. now Corporate has installed a system of maximum throughput. Each drone follows a mindless schedule to rush the "customer" out the door as quickly as possible. What's the problem? I came specifically to get rib bones for my dog. Had had a pleasant experience, the wait staff said she would bring out a box for them, did I want a bag too? Minutes later the system activated a drone to come and take my bones (yes my bones, I paid for them) away. Two minutes later the wait staff came back and was horrified to see the bones gone. The "manager" came over to assure me everything was ok, please leave a big tip. I assume that was what her script said to do. No bones, no compensation, no tip. The manager (white, slender) at Hillstone on Kirby was very dismissive, rude and a very poor excuse for a manager. She has absolutely no business being in any type of customer service/restaurant business/dealing with the public. I know this because of my experience today at lunch. My husband had just been discharged from the hospital and we were looking forward to dining at Hillstone. First of all they sat us in the bar because my husband was wearing a $50 Polo ball cap. When we asked to be moved to the dining room, because the bar was too loud, he was asked to remove his cap which he did. The aloof, kert, and dismissive manager came into play when I asked for an explanation of a paper card which was placed on our table saying basically phone use in the restaurant was prohibited as I was making a quiet call to the pharmacy. When I explained the circumstances, she had no consideration for our situation and ultimately turned her back on us and walked away. Can you imagine going into Carrabba''s, Grotto or Toulouse and being treated this way? My husband has left a review as well as we were completely flabbergasted by this treatment. There is a Big problem with the management at this restaurant and something needs to change! There was no attempt to satisfy us or to invite back. There is no need to worry about it because we will Never be back! It was clear to me that the waitstaff was in fear of the floor manager. I came to this conclusion when I asked for the floor manager to visit my table in reference to being asked not to use my phone at my table in the dining area. My waiter asked the floor manager twice to come tableside for an explanation of phone use. She finally stopped by for a grand total of 1.5 minutes and told me rudley that the enjoyment of the restaurant guests was more important than me making a brief quiet medical phone call and abruptly walked away. You definitely need a reservation for this place. We walked in last minute without one and were lucky enough to find a spot at the bar as someone was heading out. To start we had spinach artichoke dip and then for my main course I went with a grilled chicken caesar salad. I enjoyed the food and the atmosphere here. However, tonight, the service was over the top because we had the privilege of having a gentleman by the name of Darin serve us. He has been working at this location for years, and he was kind, present, exceptional to detail, and answered all of our questions. it was a true joy and Hillstone is very fortunate to have someone of this professional caliber work for them. Having a nice lunch on my day off with my husband when I get a call about my father falling and suffering a hip fracture. Get a card thrown on the table during my 10 minute conversation with his nursing home that I need to "Please" not talk on my cellphone at the table, even at a normal conversational level. Horrible people working there. The manager threw a couple out of the restaurant only because they had a toddler, who was just talking like a toddler - not bothering anyone. She was not crying or anything. We saw it all! A rather expensive restaurant, so I couldn't believe they would treat good patrons that way. My husband is going to file a complaint. He saw it all too. Hillstone is good for what it is: a chain upscale restaurant with an old-school classy bar feeling. It's a good spot for a business lunch. My salmon was perfectly cooked, and the kale side salad with peanuts and peanut dressing was delicious. The food was simple and well-executed. read more

This restaurant can be very good, if you're careful with your selection. For example, I think the ribs are excellent, and the fries and coleslaw that come with. Also thumbs up for the seared tuna salad. The prime rib was dropped from the menu, bad move as it was one of their best choices. The cocktails in general are very good, but here too care must be taken. I ordered an Aeperol Spritz and got something with grapefruit juice in it: turns out it's how they make it. But grapefruit juice, IMO, destroyed the drink and, furthermore, it's common knowledge that grapefruit juice dilutes effect of several meds that customers may be taking. So why not at least issue a caveat to those who the waiter or bartender sees are not looking at a menu. So Hilstone could easily be a 3 star. What an EFFING joke. We were seated almost 2 hours after we got there. Quoted a 45-60 minute wait, but no - it was approximately a 100 minute wait. I think we only got seated that fast because my wife had an "interaction" with the hostess who raised her voice at my wife and was rude as fuck and then said she wasn't going to continue the conversation because my wife raised her voice in response. Hey, did you know the bar has a separate wait list than the restaurant? Neither did we because no one bothered telling us, 0nce seated, some waitress showed up and took our orders, so at least they're getting things going. All of the sudden someone else shows up and she's got about half our order so we basically have to start the process over. We had barely finished our appetizer when we got our salads. Great, they're paying attention. NOPE!!. She dropped our salads and within a minute she was dropping off our steaks. Fucking ridiculous. And the Hawaiian steaks... not even close to the quality they used to be. Tenderness was fine but the flavor wasn't even close. Menu says it's served with French fries. We didn't get any French fries. Waitress came to the table and apparently ignored that my wine glass was empty. No offer for another glass. Had to ask when she came to the table 5 minutes later and then wait, and wait, and wait for someone else to bring it to me. This place has gone so downhill. We'll never go back. I've been wanting to go here when it was called Houston's, and finally was able to go. Didn't have a reservation, so the wait was over 30 minutes, so I'd definitely recommend to make a reservation! Ordered their Caesar salad, French dip au jus, and the Hawaiian! The croutons on the Caesar is amaaaazing perfectly crunchy & seasoned. My family and I absolutely love this restaurant. We have been coming here for years when they used to be named Houston's. We like to get the Hawaiian Steak, baked beans, Spinach Artichoke dip, Thai Steak and Noodle Salad, and the Apple Walnut cobbler. We recently celebrated my birthday here. This restaurant does not provide free birthday or any celebratory dessert. This restaurant is great for any occasion. The staff are professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. The service is always excellent!!! I highly recommend eating here if visiting Houston or looking for a great meal as a local. read more

This restaurant has gone down hill since it has been taken over by new management. I ordered my steak medium and it came rare. When the waitress was going to take it back the manager Schauna Porter said to stop complaining it is Christmas Eve. Then she proceeded to say to feed your baby faster so she doesn't make any noise. Besides the food going downhill now - service is awful. Schauna shouldn't even be a manager of McDonalds. After reading reviews many people feel the same way but I guess these Californians who bought Houston's out don't really care how she treats their patrons. We have been going for 20 years but will not visit again till things change. I'm sure she will find a hard time finding a job later though when someone looks her up. Grown up going to this place when it was known as Houston's. We always loved the fries and club sandwich. Sadly they don't have the club sandwich anymore. Went this past weekend for the first time in years and it wasn't that great. The French dip sandwich was lukewarm at best and the fries were soggy. I don't like the elitist vibe of putting "cash only payment" signs all over and on the menu. Everything else was good but not worth the trip. Everything is overpriced for what it is. I have been dining at this place for no less than 30 years since it was called Houston's Restaurant and I must say this might be my last. DO NOT COME WITH CHILDREN!! This is the most ANTI-CHILDREN restaurant I have ever been in my entire life. From the moment me, my wife and my two children (1) & (4) walked into the restaurant the hostess immediately told me they would not allow the stroller into the restaurant and that she expected me to take my one year old onto my lap so that she could put the stroller away. She said she would give us a booth until the manager finally came out and said we could get a table and pull a chair out so that we could park the stroller there with the baby. (common sense!!). My children were well behaved and did not male any noise to bother other patrons at all. But my one year old cried briefly for about 3 mins while mom mixed his bottle. This was enough for the manager to approach us complaining that our baby was making too much noise. Well screw you!! I am not stepping foot on your discriminatory restaurant ever again. They make you feel like you are nuisance if you bring your kids with you. DO NOT GO THERE IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN!! read more

This establishment has been a staple for years of mine and my family's. In the last several years though it has become a place that imposes more rules on its patrons (specifically in the bar area) than a prison. If you've ever been slipped a note to please be quiet or directly asked to leave for putting your phone to your ear, then you understand my meaning. They have arbitrary rules and consider themselves a restaurant with a bar area so they have requirements for sitting in that area. I have seen at least one person get kicked out every time I am there for violating their standards. Yet when their food isn't up to par or service is lacking, there is no accountability or apology, just please be thankful they allowed you to sit there. With such a limited menu and ever climbing prices, I would hope they would defer to their regular patrons and maintain a welcoming attitude but alas they are more restrictive than ever. I would suggest going to Carrabas, Graces, Kata Robata, or Eddie V's in the immediate vicinity than give them your business. They are far more welcoming and less restrictive. read more

Had the WORST customer service experience I've ever experienced with the manager of Hillstone. Having lunch with work colleagues and had to bring my 2mo and 5yo sons since day care closed. We sat in a corner booth against the wall by the window that was out of the way since I had a stroller. There were multiple issues that made my coworkers and myself uncomfortable. First- we ordered an orange juice for my 5yo son, it came in a chilled cocktail glass. Not ideal, but luckily my son is careful when he drinks. As we were waiting for our food- my 2mo starts to fuss so I pick him up out of his bassinet stroller. The manager suddenly comes around, places her hands on my stroller and demands " I need to take this stroller away, we can't have strollers in the restaurant. I'm pulling it in the back!" There was no discussion or asking to take the stroller, she just started pulling it away. I was shocked and speechless when this occurred. We had been seated at the restaurant for awhile and now you rudely decide to take my stroller away. You could have told me this up front as we checked in or even asked me to put the stroller in my car from the start. But the manager had the audacity to just take it away from me without even a conversation. My co- worker had to go to the back, unhook the bassinet part and we laid that in our booth which was just larger enough for us all to squeeze with the bassinet for the baby. Next, still waiting for our food, my son started playing with his toy cars and driving them on the booth and window next to him. He was not being loud or destructive or I would have redirected him. Then the waitress comes and says in a stern voice "Can you tell your son to stop touching the blinds." I got a little offended at this point, but did tell my son not to drive his cars on the windows anymore. The final straw was after we were paying out. My 5yo son was starting to get restless and was playing on the 3 steps next to our table (again corner table, out of the way). I saw my son jump down the steps, at which point I pulled him aside and told him this wasn't ok. He stopped and sat next to me. Not more than one min later, the manager again pops her head around and rudely demands, "You need to tell your kid to stop playing on the stairs." I was literally about to say I already told him so, but she just turned around and stormed off. My co-workers and I were appalled. I have never EVER been so dismissed or talked down to as a paying customer at a restaurant. No one even offered to get my stroller back when we finished paying out. We had to go to the back ourselves and get it out of the back room. Just a horrible way to end our lunch. My co-workers and I are in a customer oriented field and deal with children and parents every day. This is NOT the way you communicate expectations or treat professional mothers who are also managing her children. I will NEVER set foot in this establishment again and urge those who expect great service to stay away from Hillstone!!! read more

They said they wouldn't seat us if he was on the phone. Seriously? Isn't this a free country? TL; DR - service was poor across the board and food was uneven. My daughter was in town and we looked forward to revisiting a restaurant that we hadn't been to in 20 years but was a regular favorite when she was growing up. But after I noticed several parties who arrived after us being seated I checked things out to see them seated at tables that would have worked for our party of 4. Not ever sure what happened but not a good start to the evening. After taking our drink order our waitress disappeared for about 20 minutes. Dinner was a mixed bag - spinach artichoke dip was excellent as always my steak was good as was my wife's ribs. But the fries. No longer the crispy, salty shoe string fries we so fondly remembered. They were straight out of the back of the big white truck - luke warm, pale, and soft and flabby. Everyone at the table agreed that they were undercooked. We sent them back. They came back hot, pale, soft and flabby. Total fail. To top things off we had to ask twice for our check as the restaurant emptied out. 2:45 total time. It was very disappointing. Oh edited to add. So, I have heard about Houston's FOOOORRRREEEVVVEEERRRR since moving to Houston, and I have been meaning to visit here but the timing has never been right....until last week. My coworkers and I came here for a holiday lunch and the first thing I noticed was that this spot was popping at 11:30 a.m in the morning (what sorcery!). What I gleaned from this little introduction was that is was probably a place where business is conducted, which explained the general layout and atmosphere. We were seated around a circular table at noon and were given a few minutes to ponder the menu. Now, what I like to do is create a meal out of the side and appetizer menu items. However, with the items listed under the appetizers and sides on Houston's menu, I could not. So I opted for a full meal - ribs with coleslaw and fries - and a house margarita. The house margarita was a creeper; one minute I was wondering whether or not it had alcohol and then the next was was in the mood to serenade the entire floor. Excellent! (5/5) The food was underwhelming. The cole slaw tasted very earthy and the ribs were bonier than meatier. The very sweet BBQ helped but it was all meh to okay to me. I was a bit disappointed but I rallied on! (Thanks to the margaritas!) (1/5) Our waitress was very sweet and patient with us as we all tried to figure out the menu (as newbies).
