This really saddens me to write this review for this restaurant because I wanted to love everything about it so much. Me and my girlfriend talked about dining here for about a week since it's one of her favorite restaurants. She usually goes to Houston's in Georgia and she wanted me to try it out for the first time. We we're assuming the food was the same here as it is there. So we booked our reservations online on Christmas Eve at the Kirby Location to have a much needed date night. My girlfriend has a chronic lung condition and isn't able to walk more than a few steps so we requested wheelchair accessibility on the site. It didn't give clear instructions as to how it works exactly so we weren't sure what to expect. Upon arrival I checked in with the greeter at the front and also asked her about a wheel chair while my girlfriend stood outside waiting. The greeter told me to give her a few minutes while she gets an associate to come out and assist us. At the end of the conversation a lady walked up to the counter next to the greeter and stared at me without saying anything (I'm assuming she was the GM). I proceeded to walk back outside and wait for assistance. We stood outside for about 5 minutes until the same lady walked outside in a hurry and she approached us and said "Do you have a jacket to put on?" I was wearing a long sleeved dress that comes down to my knees with nothing provocative showing. It's a fitting dress so it slightly rose up while walking but to diffuse the situation I pull it down to my knees. She says again (You still don't have a jacket?) So i explained to her that I didn't have once since there was nothing inappropriate about my dress anyhow. So afterwards she said (Okay never mind it's fine) then she turns around, walks away and as she was going inside I ask her if anyone is coming out soon to assist us with the wheelchair. She says that they don't have wheelchairs and she doesn't know what the greeter was talking about. She also couldn't explain what wheelchair accessibility on the site meant. So we had to slowly walk in and be seated on our own. The best part about the service at this place was our waitress. Thank God she was as sweet and polite as she was because after that incident I felt so disappointed and disgusted with the customer service within 15 minutes of us being there. I would have been willing to disregard the approach about my dress. But what really made me leave this review is the fact that the GM at this establishment was 100% inconsiderate to my girlfriend's disability. Instead of her coming outside and informing us about the wheelchair we requested, she walked all the way outside to only approach me about my LONG SLEEVED dress then walks away. My girlfriend just got diagnosed with this disease a few months ago and has already been feeling really down and discouraged and we specifically planned this dinner as an outing for the holidays and before we even made it inside, we were being treated HORRIBLY. That situation was completely unacceptable and ruined our entire experience here. We weren't even able to enjoy our meal. If it wasn't as late as it was, we would have left and went elsewhere. Today was our 26th anniversary, and Shauna and Edna made sure it was wonderful! We had the ribs and grilled redfish, which were delicious! To end the meal, we were served a hot fudge sundae. Have been going Hillstone and its namesake Houston's for about 20 years. Tonight my wife was not feeling well so I thought I would get her some of our favorites like the smoked salmon. I had one of the worst dining experiences at Hillstone's on Kirby Dr. (Houston) and feel compelled to warn others. We started by ordering their famous BBQ ribs, only to be told they were unavailable. Disappointed, we decided to order the French Dip instead--just to later find out it was also unavailable. However, we watched the French Dip being served to the table next to us, who arrived 30 minutes after us. When we questioned this, we were given a ridiculous excuse by the so-called "manager" Jennifer, who claimed they had just baked fresh bread, which is why they could suddenly prepare the French Dip for the other table but not for us. This made no sense given the timing, and we would have happily waited for fresh bread had they been honest with us upfront. We then ordered a steak, which came overcooked. After sending it back, the steak was returned undercooked--intentionally ordered that way by Jennifer to avoid another mistake. I ended up eating a steak at a temperature I didn't order, just to avoid more issues. To make matters worse, we later found out that Jennifer was not even the actual manager. When we asked to speak with the real manager, we were met with a woman that was rude, dismissive, and completely unprofessional. Instead of apologizing or taking responsibility, the manager justified the undercooked steak by implying I didn't know how I liked my steak cooked and even defended the French Dip fiasco by repeating Jennifer's excuse about baking fresh bread. When we tried to reason with the manager, she refused to give us her name, cut the conversation short, try to hand out a $50 gift card (after paying more than $250) and said she was "done"--then ran back to the kitchen without any attempt to fix the situation. To top it off, the manager actually had the audacity to suggest we shouldn't be complaining about bad service so close to Christmas, as if the holiday season somehow excuses incompetence, disrespect and sheer discrimination. This restaurant's lack of professionalism, dishonesty, and refusal to take responsibility for their terrible service is absolutely unacceptable. Instead of trying to fix the situation, the staff--especially the manager--made everything worse. I left feeling disrespected, unheard, and completely dissatisfied. I will never return and I highly recommend avoiding this location if you expect even basic customer service or decent food quality. read more

Came for a friends birthday. The menu gives chilis at steakhouse prices. The ambiance is nice but I struggled to find something I wanted. I ended up getting the traditional salad with the ginger vinaigrette and it was good and filling. The birthday girl got the spinach and artichoke dip which I tried. It was not good to me. Very spinach heavy and thus watery. It came with a side of salsa and sour cream for some reason (enter the notes of chilis) but the salsa was very good. She also had the ribs (chiiiiiliiiis baby back ribs) which she seemed to enjoy and then had the brownie for dessert which I tried and was ok. All in all it's a fairly popular chain restaurant (formerly Houston's) and that's the kind of food they have. I will say the service was great and complimentary valet parking was a nice touch so I upped it from 3 to 4 stars for that. read more

I've gone to this restaurant many times, and the food and service have been consistently good, with courteous, friendly, but unobtrusive service and reliably good food. It may not be the healthiest choice, but the French dip is always delicious, and their kale salad is the only way I can actually enjoy that particularly nutritious veggie. Their kale and chicken salad is also ample enough to share. Hillstone's is not a noisy place, no oppressive music, so if you go with friends you can have conversations. Not a lot of people bring little children, which is also a plus if you don't like the way some people let their kids ruin other people's dining experience. The ambiance is fine, and you can choose to easily park your own car free or have curb service, another plus. read more

First time trying Hillstone , wait time on a Thursday night was about 20 min staff is friendly and ambiance is normal for a restaurant. Pricing for food isn't bad but be ready to spend a bit vs a regular restaurant . The food was good the the jumbo shrimp are pretty big for entree I had the rotisserie chicken which had great flavor I was questioning if it was fully cooked or not haha, my friend had the ribs great flavor. The entree came with dirty rice but my chicken came with a bit of rice my friend got a side of rice and it was a bigger portion but overall not to bad I expected a bit more but for now 3 stars is good being that the portion of rice on my food seemed off . We are frequent guests at the Hillstone group's restaurants in Houston, Austin, Dallas, Irvine and Newport Beach and the Kirby location is as nice or nicer as any of them. But down to only one restaurant left in Houston? Really? Hillstone, please find some land and put one in the Tanglewood/Memorial area again. This time we ordered the smoked salmon and spinach dip for our first course, and they were delicious, as always. Next, I had the Hawaiian Ribeye, and it was tender, tasty and perfectly cooked. I wasn't intending to order a steak, but the steak knife they set on the table was such a good, heavy utensil, I felt compelled to have one, anyway. And my wife was so happy that the seared tuna salad is back on the menu after an absence, and it did not disappoint. And apple cobbler for desert. Their iced tea is so excellent; what do they do to make it so good? Our server was an absolute pro, and made our meal so enjoyable. The appetizers were the star of the show here. They were tasty and we were almost full just from the starters. The drinks were a little hit or miss with some of our party enjoying the drinks and others thinking they were a little too sweet or were just okay. The servers were very friendly and cheerful when serving us. Besides the appetizers, I was not too impressed by the food. They allowed us to order the chicken sandwiches, but then returned about 10 minutes later telling us that they were all out for the night. The Thai noodle salad was amazing. I loved the flavor, the peanuts, mango & steak. All of the different textures were phenomenal. After completing the Chevron marathon, we wanted to celebrate by going to Hillstone, as in past years. We had seen reviews about their dress code, strict adherence to no large parties and no special accommodations for small children, so we came prepared. We brought a change of clothes and made a reservation before we left downtown. We had a wonderful experience - our table was ready upon arrival, Jordan and the service team anticipated our every need and the ambiance was lovely, candle light and a quiet adult atmosphere. We ordered their Prime French Dip and their Knife and Fork BBQ Ribs. The food was excellent - the French Dip was on fresh toasted bread, thinly cut prime beef, au jus and horseradish sauce with crispy fries... yum! Two 4 rib racks of ribs (St Louis & Baby Back) were falling off the bone tender served with cole slaw and crispy fries. Jordan brought an extra plate for bones, ketchup, spicy mayo and hot moist towels at the end. It was a wonderful, quiet dining experience. Their rules make sense after experiencing a meal there... good food, excellent service and quiet adult atmosphere. Perfect place for celebrations, special occasions or date nights. read more

I'd love to be able to review their food but I can't because they lost our reservation. We called this morning to see if there were any cancellations and were told they had one available time at 7 pm. We arrive for our reservation and we're told we were not on the list. You HAVE to have an email or text message confirmation otherwise they will not recognize your reservation. We called so one was not provided. Bummed to have this experience considering this place has been on my dying to try list! Heartbroken by the Decline of Hospitality at Hillstone. I recently visited Hillstone (formerly Houston's) with my family for a special occasion--my sister's two daughters' baptism celebration. My mom and her husband, who now live in San Antonio, were excited to return to a place they fondly remembered for its bar seating and lemon drops. We were joined by my uncle, his son, my cousin, and my father. What was meant to be a joyful reunion quickly turned into a deeply upsetting experience. We seated ourselves at the bar, unaware of the policy prohibiting children from sitting there. After we had already settled in, staff abruptly informed us of the rule and asked my sister, her husband, and their two daughters to leave the area. They were told that seating in the main dining area would be over an hour wait, so they left the restaurant entirely. This lack of flexibility and empathy fractured our group and cast a shadow over the evening. Later, while showing my uncle some old acting videos I made at 20, I was told I was disturbing nearby guests. A card was dropped off, followed by a verbal warning--yet when I asked the guests next to me, they confirmed they hadn't complained. This felt like another unjustified reprimand. We spent over $600-$700 that evening, and when I requested to speak with the general manager, Schauna Porter arrived accompanied by security--as if I posed a threat. I hold an MBA from Rice, graduated from USC, and am a Senior Property Manager overseeing a major city center. I understand rules and engagement, but above all, I value hospitality and respect. This experience left me feeling criminalized and deeply disrespected. I will never return to Hillstone or any affiliated restaurant. What was once a cherished establishment has lost its warmth and grace. I am heartbroken. read more

My family has been enjoying trips to Houston's/Hillstone for over 40 years. Our last two experiences have so bad that we're done. They won't care. This time wewere told they no longer seat parties of anything larger than 5. We're a family of 6 and were told one person would have to sit at another table. The manager was rude, the hostess was even worse. Five max??? No business dinners? Two couples max? We had two kids under 10 and were told to go elsewhere.
