One of the BEST restaurants I have eaten at during this trip. Its snowing crazy here but the staff in the restaurant are very friendly and warm. They offered hot tea and we had an amazing buffet lunch. Although we ate buffet but they made sure everything was taken care of. The bhindi masala was too good and also the saag paneer! The foundation of good indian food is good Indian tea. I had one of best Indian tea in Arizona We started with vegetable mono and thupka Had it after a decade , the soup in thupka was not just water . It actually had character to it. Amazing Second entree was saffron cauliflower- for the first time I could feel the flavor of saffron in the food Daughter had butter chicken( she is 6 ) in her words- rice does not have a flavor(plain rice) And the chicken was little too spicy both together in the middle of yummy. We used to go to Dehli Palace regularly for Indian food. Then we took a chance on Himalayan Grill. It improves greatly on the ambiance, and I even like the food a little better. We often go for the lunch buffet, and when we get there early, the selection of food is awesome, and I enjoy everything I sample (except maybe the samosas). If we get there later (still talking 45 minutes left of the advertised buffet hours), the selection is often a little lacking..and with adequate replenishment unlikely. Still...I've never left this place's buffet without being utterly stuffed. The booths along the window are very comfy-cozy. And the place is even prettier at night than by day. The wait staff are not pushy the way the Dehli Palace staff always seemed to be. My three year old enjoys experimenting with food here in ways she never does at other restaurants, and she loves the water fountain. I'm not a Pepsi fan, so I'm glad their hot tea is yummy. With Himalayan Grill trumping Dehli Palace for ambiance and service and trumping the India Palace for ambiance, food, service, and location, this will continue to be our go-to Indian food restaurant. read more

Worst service I have ever seen. This is the second time I had a bad experience in this restaurant. Never going back. The guy who was working was very rude. We went for buffet. Only one or two dishes were ok. When we asked the guy to bring some water he just ignored. Later after asking to remove used plates on our table he got upset. While paying bill asked for tooth pick. He was completely rude. Never going back and will recommend at least 50 of my friends not to go there. read more

Dining options near motel strips usually aren't that interesting. I stayed at the Budget Inn solely because I saw the sign for the Himalayan Grill (it was that or a burger joint/tavern called Bun Huggers). I had only had one thing here, but it was excellent, so the 5 stars are based just on that dish. I had the Tibetan thupka soup with lamb. I ordered it extra spicy, and it actually arrived pretty spicy. I asked for a couple different house-made hot sauces, and was successful in scoring a couple--one red and one a yellowish color, both really tasty. The noodles in this dish were a little on the well-done side, but not inedible. They should have been a lot thicker, like the traditional handmade Tibetan noodles. The meat was succulent. It turned out to be one of the best soups I've ever had. Service was friendly, sincere and pretty attentive, though there were a bunch of management/owner types sitting around up front, which is kind of annoying when you need something and your server is too busy busting her ass on her other tables to get you what you need. No big deal, though. I really appreciate friendly sincerity and an obvious concern by employees/owners/managers with your dining experience. Very elegant surroundings just this side of tacky. My friends and I wanted to stop for some Himalayan food. We stopped at 9:30 pm and while the restaurant was technically open till 10. He said we could only get take out in the next 10 mins. Which would have been fine if he even bothered to hand us a menu. When rushing through the menu, we asked if they had 'Chili Chicken' - he rudely dismissed that as a Chinese dish, even though it is a very popular dish found in Nepal/India. I'm surprised that he has any business at all, if that's the way he treats all his customers. Or perhaps it's because we were 3 women, and he decided it was okay for him to be rude and condescending. read more

Absolutely delicious. We had the non vegetarian sampler for two, grilled lamb chops, momo dumplings, and shrimp chau chau. A feast. The shrimp was a little overcooked but the noodles had a great texture. The restaurant looks very unassuming from the outside but quite nice on the inside. I have to get this off my chest: Lamb in my stuffed naan was not cool. I'm a vegetarian and that's not what I wanted, at all. Luckily, I think our experience was the exception, not the rule. Our order was written down wrong, and I didn't think "Oh, I ought to look in this bread to make sure it has the correct stuffing before I chomp into it," so I guess you could say it's sort of my fault. But while the waitress didn't offer an apology, a waiter or perhaps manager did take it off our bill. Moving on to the rest of the experience, which was OK: I ordered the vegetable momo, interestingly seasoned Nepalese dumplings, which were fine. I'd never been to a Tibetan/Nepalese restaurant before, so I have nothing to compare them to. My hot chai tea was, well, very milky. After plenty of flavorful chutney and greasy papadam and the aforementioned icky lamb experience, I was full with just half of my generous plate of dumplings eaten. Well, less than half if you count the two or three the fella ate. He enjoyed his food, though I can't for the life of me recall what he had, now. We paid our bill up front and were accidentally charged many hundreds of dollars more than we expected. The man had fat-fingered our bill, and he ran a refund before running the full amount through, but we were nervous for a couple of days about it being refunded properly. It all worked out fine. Four stars for the unusual and decently executed cuisine, two for the overall experience. We'll call it 3. If I lived here, it'd be a few months before I'd have the appetite for a return visit. read more

Not sure why it got such high ratings. I've had better Himalayan/Tibetan food in California. We ordered the momo appetizer, naan and lamb thupka. The momo filling was really salty, and they might sell more plates if they offered half orders ($11 for 10 dumplings is not only expensive but the quantity is rather large for an appetizer). Naan was fine, but nothing special. Lamb thupka was spiced well but didn't have the depth of a good broth. It was also too oily. Lunch buffet might be more worth it. At $30 for a noodle soup, appetizer and side of bread, it's a little pricy for what you get. I don't live in Flagstaff, but if I do come back I probably won't return to this place. read more

My husband & his friends have eaten here multiple times and we were looking forward to this stop on our way back to LA from Page(AZ). We would have given a full 5 stars for the food. We had the vegetarian thali, the veggie chau chau, lassi & Indian chai. This time we were really disappointed with the customer service. They took 15 - 20 minutes to seat us & it took another more than 30 minutes for our food to arrive. Agreed, it was a sat night and the restaurant was almost full. Our server was not even ready to apologize for the delay & when questioned, responded as if it was totally normal. Given the fact that this restaurant is not a small or family run place with cheap food, this was unacceptable! Thankfully there was a manager who later came & apologized with an excuse that they were shorthanded in the kitchen & that the Thali required them to make a lot of different items which took too much time ! read more

This review is mostly inspired by the not so good service and the rude person who was taking our order. That guy seemed to be in so much hurry while taking our order and was not even willing to answer when asked for recommendations. When we tried ordering veg thali he said It would take 30 mins to come but our food was served after 50 odd mins of waiting (and we didn't even order thali) . They did serve food quickly to people who seemed to be speaking their local language. I do not know what was going on in the kitchen but if anything they should be courteous enough to inform their customers about the wait. With regards to food it was not great. They had this masala (typical Nepali spice I assume) which they used in all the dishes seems like. Because my noodles and my husbands curry tasted the same sans the ingredients. I had some of the best food ever here. I went with two girlfriends and one of them can be picky about her food. We were on our way back to Phoenix from the Grand Canyon, which was a long, great day. We were looking for something different, food my friend from South Dakota couldn't easily find. I didn't know what to expect and loved my tandoori lamb. I've never had a bad lamb dish but this was amazing. My friends ordered a spinach lamb dish and chicken chau chau, a noodle dish. Along with the fabulous naan and appetizer sampler, it was an enjoyable food experience. The waitstaff were friendly and super helpful. The prices were reasonable for the amount and quantity of food. Stopped in on a recent Flag trip and was quite impressed with their Sunday brunch. For about $11 per person, there were rice, naan, probably 10 or 12 hot entrees, salad, fruit, and dessert. The lamb biryani was very good, an impressive lamb to rice ratio. The lamb itself was tender and well seasoned. I also tried the butter chicken, saag paneer, mixed veggie korma, a potato and zucchini dish, and the vegetarian Thali. Everything was flavorful. The Thali was a mixed bag for me. I liked the flavor but there was something a little off about the texture of the noodles. Dessert options included mango pudding, rice pudding, and jamun, little fried dumplings in a sweet syrup. Honestly, skip dessert and focus on the savory side. It was a great brunch option and a good deal. read more

You pull a fast one and screech into the parking lot of the Himalayan Grill! Or at least, that's what we did! We pulled into the Himalayan Grill primarily because I knew there would be good vegetarian choices at a Nepali/Himalayan/Indian restaurant. We were not disappointed! Even though we weren't all "Veggies," we ended up getting all vegetarian dishes and sharing. The curries were very tasty, as were the vegetarian samosas. I have come here many times over the last 8 years and it was reasonably good for a long time. I just had lunch there after a 3 month hiatus and it has really gone down hill. Bland food, little seasoning and awful tasting chutney. The raita was like water rather that the thick yogurt based accompaniment that I'm used to. They used to have real pikoras and samosas as appetizers. No more...I think they took packaged Chinese spring rolls and fried them. The nan was thinly rolled and tasted like stale matzos. It seems that the food is so different that they must have hired a new chef. I probably won't return until they hire a different chef. Too bad, really. read more

I had eaten at this place around 4 years ago everything was decent . Decided to stop by today and the experience was awfully disappointing. We arrived at 9pm and requested for paneer tikka the owner I assume says it will take time to cook so he can't take order of that.. OKAY(restaurant closes at 10pm BTW) ...we ordered other stuff anyways. Now the series of unprofessional events. -Firstly they served the naan bread without any main curry dishes that we had ordered, they all came after 15 min by then you can imagine if u have eaten Indian food the naan was already cold and hardened. Nice service right there.. -Secondly the owner was in absolute hurry to make us leave probably because we were the last customers. He kept hovering around every few min asking if we are done. He tried to clear the plates and we had to tell him we are still eating. Truly rude and uncouth behavior for being a restaurant owner and lacking all kind of dinner table mannerisms. Lastly after asking him what time do you guys stop serving he replies with an audacity that last take out order is at 9:30. I would suggest changing your timing online if you can't provide basic services after 9pm. I believe incidents like this go unnoticed majority of times if a restaurant has been in place for a long time. We should not let past reputation excuse the present actions. I would strongly suggest reconsidering your choices for the future visits. Food was tasty hence 2* however everything was wrong with the service at this place. read more

A serious surprise! I discovered this place thanks to a Restaraunts.com coupon. And it blew me away. The flavors were unlike anything I've ever had. It is NOT Indian food, don't expect that. It is food from the crossroads of India & China. More subdued than Indian, tangier than Chinese. Everything seemed extremely fresh. A rich, exciting food experience. I had the Lamb Chao Chao, my wife had the chicken karai. It was impossible to say which was better. I recommend this place highly to anyone who wants to try something a little new. read more

Oh My. I wasn't that thrilled to have Indian Food because I guess I have never had good or great Indian food before. Friends went here the night before and said we had to go and they came with us again. It was wonderful. The interior of the restaurant was very nicely decorated, the service was great and the food was awesome. 2 of my friends were from Britain and know Indian food and they said this was the best they have ever had in Arizona. I had a chicken chou chou: the vegetables were hard to find, the chicken was disgusting (old, probably reheated -- I couldn't eat it, too much fat), the noodles were good though. My husband had lamb Korah which was okay but rather creamy. We were very unhappy with the service. The waiter was rude, ignored me several times, eg just stared at me when I asked whether he could recommend something. He gave us a bad feeling -- never had this before in the USA! We were shocked. I only ate here once before I moved away from Flagstaff and that once was literally 2-3 days before I moved which was sad because what I discovered is that this is the best Indian place (and I think now the only Indian place? If my memory serves me correctly the Indian buffet on W. University closed awhile ago...?) in Flagstaff. I went with two friends - myself and another friend were vegan, and the third in our party was vegetarian. Our waiter was super nice and accomadating telling us what was vegan and what wasn't, answering all of our questions about the food, and frequently checking up on us to make sure everything was okay and to refill our water. You can also order beers and tasy mixed drinks while eating here. I think they have a buffet during the day, but I would probably still order off of the menu if I came during the day. read more

They have the Chicken Takhani and the Shrimp Takhani, which is similar to Butter Chicken. The Takhani sauce is absolutely the best I have had, perfect for dipping your Naan in. They also have a great lunch buffet as well. The atmosphere and ambiance makes the meal even better. The frosting on the cake is their service. Unless it is really busy or there is a large group, you can expect some of the most attentive service. I happened to be in Flagstaff overnight and found this on Yelp. I like interesting spicy foods and this wonderful version of Northern Indian was a delight. Interesting fish fried dumpling with great sauce and Saag Lamb for main course. The lamb was very good and served in a spicy sauce with many ingredients I could not identify over the basic ginger. Had a Nepalese version of a Vodka Martini with blue Curacao. Probably not original but quite good although a little sweet for me. The restaurant was large and comfortable and appeared to be family owned. Working hard to please which is hard when one only has basic English language skills. A nice evening. read more

This is the best Indian buffet I've ever been to. The selection is incredible--there are probably 20 different options--and every dish is delicious. In addition to the rice, soup, noodles, samosas, staples (saag paneer, tandori chicken, curry, etc) there is always a rotation of lamb dishes, vegetarian/vegetable dishes, and an extensive fruit/vegetable salad bar with pickles and chutneys, and at least two deserts, usually kheer and gulab. Speaking of the Kheer, it's astonishing. Unspeakably good! The dinner is also excellent; there are many interesting vegetable dishes on the menu. The owner is (handome and!) very friendly and said hello to us whenever we ate there. One annoyance: The Naan takes FOREVER to arrive to your table, and you have to ask for it, usually more than once. However, the reason is because they cook it fresh as you order it, and it is as fresh and delicious as can be. On Sunday for a bit extra they do a champagne brunch and serve all you can drink champagne with the buffet. Simply heavenly. Many restaurants have failed at this difficult-to-access location, but I think the Himalayan Grill will last. read more

Loved this place. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We eat Indian food quite often and know good Indian food when we taste it. The popadum which is served when you are seated was excellent. The naan was good and fluffy but could have been warmer. I don't think it was served to us fresh out of the oven. I had the Dal which was good. Not overloaded with ghee and heavy cream. My husband had the vegetarian tofu dish which was excellent. He had them fry the tofu to give it a firmer texture.....they did it perfectly. My sister had a noodle dish with lamb. She liked it but I think the flavors were overwhelming for her. But she enjoyed it a lot. This is a great place to have dinner. It's warm and inviting with fabulous photos to display the Himalayan culture.
