Four of us went for dinner. The outdoor setting is beautiful. The staff was attentive and friendly. I wish the food were better. We ordered the heirloom tomato and peach salad (the tomatoes tasted as if they came from a hot house, and the burnt eggplant mousse did not add anything to the dish), fried chicken (which was delicious), grilled salmon, and the black cod (one of the house specialities). While both plated beautifully, the salmon was dry and overcooked, and the black cod lacked flavor. The chocolate cream dessert was good, but nothing special. At these prices, I expected better. The staff, while attentive, seemed in a hurry to rush us through our meal. As soon as a plate was empty, they whisked it away, regardless of whether or not other people at the table were finished. We were in and out in an hour and did not have a chance to leisurely dine and converse. read more

It's been a few years since I have dined here... The ambiance is still great. Tucked away near Century City, the entrance is quiet and feels hidden away. Entering the restaurant there's an open air patio in the back with lovely greenery and lighting. The decor and service is lovely, but unfortunately the food hasn't improved too much since my last visit a few years ago. While sounding good on the menu, I felt the flavors were lacking especially at this price point. We were pretty happy with the raw items, the hamachi, oysters and scallops. The scallop crudo felt like it should have been served with some chips or some vessel... We were just scooping scallops, cucumber and avocado out with some forks. The pork belly came and was presented well, but the pork belly itself was quite bland. The skin is crispy, most of the flavors came from the pickled carrots and vegetables. The hanger steak was cooked well, but it was way too salty. It was paired with this orange dip with maybe gojuchang?, fried potatoes pieces, roasted turnip, dill and pickled onions...it didn't work and it just tasted like a salty 58$ mess. The crispy brussel sprouts were for sure crispy.. and there was a big bowl of it....but it was way too salty/acidic with no sweetness to balance it. Came in last month on a Thursday for a team dinner. Not too busy on a Thursday night so quickly sat and orders placed once the whole party arrived. For drinks I ordered a vodka gimlet, great flavor and very refreshing. For food we ordered almost everything to share- their house sourdough, hamachi sashimi, Maine lobster roll, jidori chicken, crispy Brussels sprouts, mushroom fried rice, grilled broccolini and roasted carrots. Everything was delicious! My favorites were the hamachi sashimi, lobster roll, Brussels and fried rice. For my main I opted for the black cod - perfected flaky and great smoky flavor. To finished we shared the miso donuts and pear tarte for dessert. Everything was great- the ambiance, the food, drinks, service and the company. Overall a great night at Hinoki. read more

Came for a big group dinner (40+ people) and we had the whole outdoor area to ourselves. Beautiful restaurant with Valet parking only. They had a smaller focused menu, and we were able to try everything since I came here with a larger group. We were seated outside, but the food did take a bit longer to deliver. The black cod, the tenderloin, with a side of crispy brussel sprouts were the best on the menu. The décor is an absolute 10/10, and the service matches it. The staff members were genuinely friendly, and the space itself is beautiful. I loved the lighting and the outdoor heaters--they created such a cozy atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the ambiance. I was disappointed because everything looked so appealing, but the quality and flavor just weren't there. The salmon appeared farm-raised, and none of the dishes really stood out. The sashimi and the scallops were so good. Great starters. The duck was quite dry and bao not really close to traditional nor better than normal bao. Oysters were kind of bitter and also not really accentuated by the toppings they added on. The cod was fine, cool burning wood chips next to it experience but not really flavor-affecting. Desserts were okay. Just normal donut holes were fine. Cake was fine. the trifle was REALLY weird. There was something in the matcha layer that was extremely bitter and almost chemical tasting it was inedible to me. Came here for my birthday and the hostess asked about it, saying she would tell our server. They didn't do anything though :( Also we were one of like two tables there that night, so was a little sad. Overall, would unfortunately not recommend thiss as a fine dining experience. We went for the Valentine's Day prix-fixe menu at $150 per person, and honestly... I feel scammed. Yes, the restaurant is pretty. Yes, the servers were nice. But none of that justifies the price when the food is a complete letdown. The portions were tiny--like, tasting menu tiny--but the flavors were not tasting menu quality. I wouldn't care if the plates were small if the food was incredible, but it was just... bland. Regular. Forgettable. Nothing that made me think, "Wow, this is worth $150." The only decent part of the meal was the steak (which was literally like five small pieces). That's it. Everything else felt like filler dressed up to look fancy. We spent around $400 for Valentine's dinner and left disappointed and still thinking about getting food somewhere else. For a place that charges this much, the food should be mind-blowing. Disappointed. This restaurant has been on my list for 10 years and I finally got around to driving all the way over here. And I was very disappointed with the food. The restaurant itself is beautiful and very very elegant and quiet but the food needs to match the decor. We had the hamachi, lobster roll, black cod, and Okinawan yam. Hamachi - it has so much sauce and other things on it, you can't tell if it's fresh or not. I didn't think the flavors worked with each other. Lobster roll - so blah and the bread was too dense Black cod - this was cooked perfectly Okinawan yam - that cream cheese topping was just disgusting with the yam. The yam itself was delicious but that topping just did not work at all Service was good. Waters were refilled very quickly. I now dont know why it was on my list of must try restaurants anymore....... Parking is valet or a paid parking garage in the back. read more

It felt a great spot for a dinner date. I got the cod and my friend got the steak. Very good!! We also got a side of mushrooms and broccolini. They were a very large portion! Hinoki & the Bird is probably my favorite restaurant in Century City! I come here for lunch at least once a week and it never disappoints. Most often, I order the salmon poke bowl. Having tried the other poke places in the area, I say with confidence that this is the best poke bowl in Century City. The salmon is always fresh and the other flavors and portion are unbeatable. The eggplant sando and fries are also quite tasty! In addition to the delicious cuisine, the staff is great. They are always welcoming and seem to remember us each time we come in. Met up with visiting family here as a sort of mid-point between Santa Monica and Hollywood. The atmosphere was nice! The back patio in particular is very charming for the area. The inside had a nice vibe too, but looked completely empty for a Thursday night. The food was all good! My favorite was the black cod entree, but the spring pea salad was also nice and fresh. Only complaint has to be the service. Our waitress was nice, but had a tendency to disappear or attend to other tables for long stretches. A hidden spot tucked away next to Century City Mall ! The vibes were great and the food was interesting. They serve Asian American dishes, so I had mixed thoughts, some things were hits and misses. Overall though, it's a decent spot to check out if you're in the area ! Lobster Roll - Decent! The lobster was great, especially with the hint of curry they add to the lobster mixture. The miss for me here was the charcoal brioche bun, it was a bit tough and had a grainy texture. Crispy Jidori Chicken - Crunchy! The chicken was really crispy on the outside and tender on the inside ! The radish cubes were a great palette cleanser ! Hinoki Scented Black Cod - Tender! The cook on the black cod was great, it was very flaky and tender to the touch ! The sunomono cucumbers were refreshing and the charred eggplant was cool. The miss here was the sauce (i think the soy reduction). I like the black sauce, but the light brown one took away from the flavor of the fish. Japanese Okinawan Yam - Sweet! You can't go wrong with Japanese yam, it has the perfect sweetness and this dish was plated beautifully. The miss here was the umeboshi crème fraiche. I had such high hopes and am so disappointed to have to review this so bad. Let's start positive: location is great, central & beautiful spot. The interior aesthetic is on point, warm, inviting meets older RH/Anthropology. Now the experience: if I'm being nicely insecure - service was mid/bad. Waited 5+ minutes for server to come by, water glasses went empty more often than full, tea wasn't hot, coffee was cold at best. Server brought new table plates and mine was noticeably chipped, server didn't even care. The food: not great, actually terrible if I apply the $$$$ priced yelp standards to my food experience. The hamachi- was mid, cut too thick, a bit fishy smelling and seemed salty. The fried chicken app - was the best but was basically gloried CFA filets with a dusting of spices and sweet dipping sauce. The poke bowl was basic, with again a fishy salmon taste, the only real sauce accompaniment was a soy sauce- super one dimensional. We got two desserts - matcha crème Brulé - that was good and the dark chocolate cookies (mid) not remotely worth the calories. Tragically the restaurant wasn't busy and they actually seemed a bit over staffed. To top it off, they automatically add a 20% tip (for 3 people) to the bill, so literally no one (cooks included) has any motivation to go for the gold. 3 people ($240) and the best service came from the valet. Also I'm giving this review as someone who expensed it, I didn't even have to pay for this and I feel ripped off on behalf on my multi-billion dollar corporation. I had the Hanger steak topped with shiitake mushroom jus, oyster mushroom, and sunchoke chips was seasoned mysteriously delicious. My side was outa sight. The ambience was casual and the patio area is beautiful. It got a little noisy during lunch rush, but it was still a good experience. I valeted my car and it was $12. Original fares, with good flavors and off the beaten path combinations. Trendy spot, cozy ambiance, bit pricey but that comes with the location I guess. Service was good but it took quite a long time to get our dishes and the wait for our entrees was a bit annoying. The sashimi was good. Great quality fish, the sauce was a tad salty for my taste and I could have used a touch of acid. The uni baguette was surprising and I like the flavor and taste. I am wondering if the serving temperature was right or if the plate sat a bit in the kitchen and the temperature of the bread raised the temperature of the uni. The temperature contrast might have been interesting. I didn't ask the waiter if this was the way the chef wanted it or not. The Japanese Okinawan yams were a nice surprise. The pickled onions made everything brighter. Good mouth feel too. The lamb rack was perfectly cooked. The tamarind seasoning was pungent, too salty on its own. However the yogurt sauce tamed it nicely. The surprise was the bed of thai basil it came on. It was actually really adding to the profile of the dish IMHO. The black cod was cook to perfection, glistening, moist, flaky. Very very good. For final, the miso donuts were a bit disappointing. What a hidden gem. Easy to get to with valet & self-parking option, however they're the same price. Great for a date, business meal, or friend catch up. The ambiance both inside and on the patio are incredible. It's gorgeous with greenery and low lights. Also not excessively loud. Great, welcoming staff. Our server had some good menu suggestions for us. The drinks were incredible. The Earth, Wind & Fire was a necessity and arrived at the table on fire. Easy to do a mix of staters and mains family style here. The daily sashimi & sourdough were excellent starters. Sourdough is fresh baked. Also started with the kale salad, crispy jidori chicken and crispy pork belly. All were great. The honey sauce on the side of the chicken is to die for. The black cod also came on fire and was absolutely delicious. The Japanese yams taste more like a dessert than a side. We went here with a group of 4 on a Friday evening. Reservations were made online the night before. It's located just south of the century city mall. There are tables inside and a large spacious covered outdoor patio with heat lamps. It was not very busy during our meal. We ordered the octopus, boar ribs, steak, pork chop and mushroom fried rice to share. We also ordered a round of drinks. The food was so good and flavorful, I really enjoyed the octopus, ribs and pork chop the most but everyone was truly great. Portions are not huge but they are sharable and everyone felt satisfied with the meal. It ended up being about ~$70 per person after tax and tip. Valet parking was $12. Not sure if there was anywhere else to park but there is definitely not street parking. read more

One of the singular features that defines a fine dining establishment is consistency. Is the cuisine as delectable as you remembered it, the service, the attention to details? And, though you might be tempted to recall your last (memorable) visit by ordering a repeat performance, were you adventurous enough to test the menu? Happily, a recent return of Hincoki & The Bird, not only lived up to my previous visit, it went beyond it. From the cordial greeting to the "We look forward to seeing you again," it was a delight, from the designer cocktail to the fresh made donuts and dipping sauce for dessert. But it was the in between dishes-- the butternut squash salad and the remarkable double cut Kurobuta pork chop with miso butter pickled plum that knocked it out of the park. The pork must have been sous vid to be that tender and then grilled, served with a single spare rib as an extra tasty tidbit, garnished with a forest of micro-greens. It will be hard to resist ordering it again, but I will continue to explore the orderings to be had-- the rack of lamb or the whole duck, perhaps. To be continued... read more

Save yourself the embarrassment. It's very weird policy, but I'm assuming it's due to their target clientele, which I think id older clients that still write checks. Younger clientele, or people that work in tech are rare in these parts. Seems like a local lunch spot or post work spot for people in the finance or consulting industry, which explains the adherence to more of a conservative/old school way of paying your bill. Interesting given the music selection and the food, selection and rings more contemporary/hip . Think the kind of place Sarah Jessica Parker would go to if she were in LA instead of New York. The food: I ordere two appetizers and two drinks . The Koji butter with a bread definitely taste better at room temperature as the fermented rice butter really develops into a creamy sweetness that perfectly accompanies the fresh baked sourdough bread. Had this place saved in list of to try. The restaurant in its entirety presented with a lot of promises to impress. It has its own valet. Exterior and interior decor without any flaws. Menu was enticing; I wanted to order almost everything. Ultimately had the oysters, gem salad, lobster pasta, strawberry parfait tasting menu with wine pairing and the hamachi, chicken, steak, and donuts tasting menu. Wine pairing here offered very frugal amounts compared other restaurants I've been to. Oysters were delicious, my compliments there, but everything else in my meal (salad, lobster pasta, parfait) was underwhelming. Was nearby and it was decided to try this place out. It is definitely a different experience. Nice selection from the bar, the staff is friendly and made our experience enjoyable. Very modern and clean location. They have a great patio area if you want to eat outdoors. The black lobster roll is definitely different in a good way. Usually the rolls they use for lobster rolls are traditionally buns and here they make their own black roll which is very good and pairs well with the lobster they prepare. Phenomenal. This is a late late review but this is more about service than the food. A taller gentleman (Asian with a swoop in his hair, I believe Bryan?) was the best server of my life. Came in through a friend's invitation and he was so kind and was on it. It was a busy evening as well and he kept it moving and was still attentive. Food was great - high price point but worth it! I had the Wagyu burger, crispy brussel sprouts, and pommes frites here. The burger was pretty soggy. Two of my other coworkers and I all ordered it and not one of us ate those buns since they got so soggy. The fries were majorly lacking salt and the white sauce that came with the fries was not good. The only thing I loved was the Brussel sprouts. They were very good. I think I just ordered the wrong thing here. I probably should've just had the salmon or their signature poke bowl. I haven't tried these dishes but I'd like to think they'd both be better than the burger. read more
