Hoagie city makes HUGE sandwiches. But perhaps too big for their own good. The inside of the restaurant isn't much to write home about, although interestingly they also sell meats and cheese by the pound in addition to making sandwiches. The menu is fairly limited, with mostly cold sandwiches and a couple hot options. The most popular cold sandwich is the Italian and the most popular cold sandwich is the cheesesteak. I ordered the Italian and a bag of chips, no drink. They offer half (8") or full (16") sizes, and I opted for the half. The half sandwich and a bag of chips was $14. The sandwich was absolutely massive, especially for it being the half size. There was so much meat and toppings on the sandwich the hoagie wouldn't even remotely close in order to take a bite, which led me to eating it open faced like a slice of pizza. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure some people love a massive sandwich like this, but the whole point of a sandwich in my mind is to be able to eat it as intended, with the bread on either side and toppings in the middle. Since I was attempting to eat it open faced, it also became extremely messy and the mayo and oil along with other toppings was displaced everywhere. I eventually took off some of the meat to be able to eat it normally, but then the excess mayo caused all of the insides to slide out all over the place. That said, the meat and cheese tasted good, appeared to be high quality, and definitely freshly sliced. After hearing and reading about real "Philly cheesesteak", we decided to try this place for lunch. We ordered the cheesesteak with cheese whiz, onions, and pepper, the "mini" plain cheesesteak, and the half pastrami. We went before the lunch rush hour - the young lady behind the register was helpful with her recommendations, and overall, the service was quick. First impression - it's a lot of food. A half hoagie alone can feed two grown adults. All the hoagies were filled generously, and the ingredients were fresh. Having tried Pat's and Geno's many times in Philadelphia, we were not really impressed by the cheesesteak. It was good, but not great. I felt that the ratio of the meat to cheese could have been more even. Again, not a bad cheesesteak (and certainly better than any of the other chain sub shops in town). The unlikely star of our lunch though, was the pastrami - easily the best we have had outside of Katz in NYC. I would go back to Hoagie City just for this sub alone the next time. Wow. Order a full size steak cheesesteak (with provolone, peppers, and onions) and it was HUGE. It is something you can totally split with another person! I have driven by this restaurant so many times and finally decided to check it out. I placed my order online and it was super simple to do. After I placed my order, it had given me a 30-35 minute wait time but it was actually way shorter than that. I got a text saying my order was ready for pick up 10 minutes after I placed the order! Looks like family run. We ordered the Salad and a $22 Cheesesteak. It was mainly a lot of guys there because we love this kind of stuff. First of all the salad was really good as it was a huge portion with so many different meats on it. Blew me away. My work partner ordered the cheesesteak. At first one I saw it I thought, it was kind of small for $22 until he told me the other half was in a bag for him to take home later (8" roll small vs 16" roll - large fyi) ! Cheesesteak he said was decent and I told him the bread was probably really good since they use Amarosa rolls from Philly. Definitely one of the top sub shops in Central Ohio! They use Dietz and Watson meats ..... the owner has been using them, from what I understand, for decades! Service was excellent! When you get a sub from this establishment, you don't worry about not getting enough quality meat on your sub ! The garnish and the seasoning that I got on mine was just fantastic! They also have old time pickle barrels, or you can even get a hot and spicy pickle . We did also order fresh cut fries, which were cooked perfectly. You also buy meats and cheeses per pound there. There is also a nice indoor seating and area everything was very clean looking from restrooms to eating area and counter. This is the type of shop that I look for when eating out ! A slight disclaimer that because I am pregnant most of the menu is off limits to me. Having said that I love a good meatball sandwich so thankfully I was able to find something to get excited about. The menu is pretty typical for a sandwich shop although a bit more pricey. I ended up getting the large meatball sub which costs a steep $19.50. For some reason I was not expecting two giant sandwiches. My husband got the large veggie and cheese and liked it, but shared that because it was so big, the bread/veggie/cheese dispersion was a bit off and it was hard to get a bite with everything. The meatball sub was really good but the sauce could have been more flavorful. Tons of juicy meatballs and the bread is delicious. The size of the subs makes up for the price but the taste didn't quite live up to my expectations. I like my sandwiches with a bit of a bite to it so I recommend ordering the vinegar separately (otherwise it's an oil/vinegar mix that I found to be heavier on the oil). Walked in and ordered 4 subs/sandwiches and was in and out in about 10 minutes. Some of the best deli sandwiches I've ever had. Meat loaded to the point that you can take half off and make a whole other sandwich. The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the lady checking us out kept getting upset when I asked for something not to be on the sandwiches and she couldn't figure out how to use her register. Also could have gone without Fox News blasting on the big screen. Let me preface this review by stating that I LOVE hoagies/subs. But the rumor mill was turning that this official Philadelphia owned Deli was bringing in amarosa rolls for their cheese steaks. It was kinda confusing because no one greeted us and there was no signage for where you order. I agree with another reviewer that the Fox News is very off putting, not because of any political affiliation but because it is sooooo loud. On to the food. We ordered all of our Subs with Mayo. we didn't get any which isn't a huge deal but is annoying. The portion is huge and it is a good sub. My only issue is there's too much meat for the bread type. The Philly Amoroso roll and Dietz and Watson meats and cheeses brought me immediately back to South Philly. I would recommend this place to both transplant and local Columbus folks alike! We got the Italian, Turkey and Special Italian hoagies and a cheesesteak with American and fried onions. All were fantastic but the standout star was the Special Italian with the sharp prov and hot and sweet capicola really brought me back to South Philly and the deli I worked at as a kid. Born and semi- raised on the East Coast and can say these subs/hoagies are legit. 8" (domestic) ham & american cheese on a wonderful fresh Italian roll. This place is a hidden gem if you want a good hoagie around Columbus. This is the next best thing to heading to Philly for a steak and cheese - and even Philly shops would struggle to beat this place. Every time I order there is a reason why they can't make my order. Last week they claimed they were not making hot food. I asked for my order to be cancelled after I was texted by the store. No refund has been issued, they don't answer the phone and when I texted back the number that texted me from the store that I didn't get a refund I got no response but they read the message (don't use an iPhone if you don't want people to know you are ignoring them). I have only successfully got food from them once and it was okay at best. They compensate for a lack of included toppings and flavor with a ton of meat which I guess is great for most on the American Diet but some of us want to taste more than meat and would gladly give some of it up for flavor.
