Tonight found us looking for waterside dining in the Embarcadero without a wait. Hofbrau was that place after striking out at a few others. Customers approach the counter and order from a fairly extensive menu board. They advertize the roast beef on their sign and 2 members of my party ordered that with fries. I ordered the fish, shrimp and fries. One of us also ordered a Sunny Days beer on tap. The sandwiches were filled with sliced beef and very tasty. The fish was batter fried as was the shrimp. It was a bit greasy but overall not bad. The fries were ok, not greasy or overcooked but nothing special other than there was a large serving of them. The total cost for this meal for the 3 of us was just over $50. Considering it is in the heart of a tourist hotspot directly in sight of Morro Rock that is probably about average or better. A steady stream of customers came even after the normal dinner rush. I think anyone looking for a quick bite of filling fare and casual dining will enjoy this waterside eatery. read more

We tried the roast beef, corned beef, pastrami, and clam chowder. All were good. I have to say that we ate here twice and they had two different people making the sandwiches. The first night with the older gentleman, the sandwiches were superb. He really got the meat dipped in that Au Jus and cheese melted well on the press. The second time, there was a lady making the sandwiches and she barely dipped the meat in the Au Jus and the cheese wasn't fully melted. This made the meat less flavorful and a little more dry. I guess your experience may be different depending on who is doing the cooking that day. It was still good regardless. Their clam chowder was yummy. Super creamy and thick. Great for dipping with the soughdough. Jusy wish it had bigger chunks of clam. The bread bowls could have a little more crust and structure as sourdough should but the flavor was good. Nice casual dining with a great view. Walk-in order/pay and food is brought to the table. The staff were nice and courteous. We shared the clam chowder which was good and that was okay with us. This place was recommended to us by two different people. We are so glad we listened! It's in a perfect location looking out at Morro Bay Rock. You can sit outside on patio or inside to be a little warmer. When you walk in the menu is hanging up. Right under that is a huge skewer of Roast Beef, and it looks delicious. You order right at the front and walk down the line. They had a perfect table open, so my son grabbed it. We decided to get a variety of items and share. Here is what we got: Calamari Broiled Burger Calamari strips Fish & Chips French Dip with provolone Cup of Clam Chowder All this was about 45$ which I thought was very fair price. Perfect amount for us and only a little to leave with. I would not change anything about our experience here. The only thing I would not order again was the clam chowder. It was just, ok. If you want refills, to go box, or anything extra you have to stand up by the register and ask for it. That didn't bother me though. I went with clam chowder and 2 piece fish n chips, my husband went with 2 piece fish n chips and beers to drink. After having been away for over 25 years, I made it back to the Hofbrau. The new location is much more beach casual than my memories of the old place. Back then, it was hard to imagine ordering anything but the roast beef. Now, on the other hand, there are many other tempting items on the menu. Today, I tried their Calamari Steak sandwich ($11.95). The options are fried, breaded, or grilled. I chose fried. It was a great choice. I also upgraded to clam strips instead of fries ($2) The sandwich came on a slightly sweet brioche bun with dill pickles, tomato slices, and romaine lettuce, tarter sauce on the side. The fried calamari steak was substantial with a fantastic crispy battered exterior. I added half the tarter and assembled the sandwich. The balance was perfect between the moist softness of the calamari, the crunchy fatty saltiness of the batter, the sweet softness of the bun, the creaminess of the tarter, with the contrast of the lettuce and tomato. The dill slices added just the right amount of bite. Fantastic. Would recommend The clam strips were typical, breaded and fried. Nothing special. However, I added some yellow mustard to the tarter sauce and . Fantastic. Overall, great location, nice patio seating, wonderful service, and an amazing sandwich. Bravo! read more

This German themed restaurant in the heart of Morro Bay Embarcadero was a pleasant surprise! It's has a order counter similar to "wahoos" but that's where the resemblance ends. Even though you can get fish entrées there the daily special was for a French dip sandwich that had jalapeños and spicy cheese. It was out of this world there was so much roast beef on this and that little mini sandwich that I had my husband and I decided we should've split one. There's also a little convenient bar that has homemade chunky mustard and the hottest freshest horseradish I've had in a long time similar what is served at a true steak restaurant like the claim jumper. They carve the fat off so the sandwich is all meat, and serve with a side of au jus. It isn't sitting in some juice/water & being thrown on a bun. The Fish and Chips was also a hit. The batter was light, similar to a tempura batter. It must have been cooked in very hot oil, as the batter was crisp & perfectly browned, and the fish was firm & flakey, not soggy. My oh my, that au jus!! My husband was the one who got their famous roast beef sandwich and I was fortunate enough to steal a couple bites. And honestly that's all I needed because that thing is heavy! The star of our whole takeout lunch was really that delicious au jus dipping sauce though. I loved it so much that I ended up dipping my grilled cod sandwich and fries into it. It was that good. My cod sandwich was really fantastic as well. Lunch on a Sunday was BUSY. We placed a phone order and they said it'd be ready in 15mins. It ended up being 30mins so we ended up waiting on their deck overlooking the water for awhile. It is a walk up, order your food, go a little further pick your drink, pay your bill, grab your number for the table, grab your plastic ware, napkins etc and go sit down somewhere.. then they'll bring you your food. The clam chowder had a nice creamy texture, but not a lot of flavor. The fish and chips were delicious, the fish was super moist and the breading was good. It's been a tradition to have lunch here everytime we visit Morro Bay now. Food is solid and its just a nice casual environment which is great for our small kids. Roast beef sandwich (4): Everyone loves lots of meat and this sandwich has it. Really nice cuts. Served with some juice to dip your sandwich in. Throw some of their dijon mustard and horseradish on there and its pretty good. I typically split it cause I want to try other stuff and the flavor is tiring after a while IMO. If you like roast beef though, this is a good sando. Seafood combo (5): Fish n chips with calamari. This is amazing! Huge chunks of fish lightly battered and fried to perfection. Comes out piping hot everytime! Even though everyone raves about the roast beef, this is my favorite. Clam Chowder (5): Large chunks of clams and potatoes. Creamy soup. Bread is perfectly soft on the inside and crispy on the outside. Doesn't get much better than this on a cold day. What a view. It was chilly on the day we visited Hofbrau, but we still enjoyed the beautiful view from inside. When I ordered at the front, the cashier and the person working in the kitchen took my daughter's allergies very seriously, even looking up the ingredients in the bread. I am saddened that this restaurant is no longer a true hofbrau. My husband and I have been coming here annually for close to 30 years. It was 2 years since our last visit due to illness last summer. We were so excited for lunch today and ended up very disappointed. First, what is with the new counter with the line out the door. Covid is not a life threatening factor. Let us back in. It's not warm and friendly to line up outside. This restaurant used to have whole turkeys, roasts, and hams on display and cut into sandwiches. That feature is gone. A picture of it is our their website if you want to see what it was like. Now, the bread is in this area. Today, our turkey sandwiches were just hot deli meat with cheese and au jus. Just okay! Not anything like previous years. Disappointing! Probably another restaurant killed by the next generation or Covid. Unfortunately, we are not planning to return. Years of patronage and memories end. This place had a nice little glassed in area outside on the water with a view of the bay. Views were great, even saw an otter or two and all the boats and kayaks going by. Food came out relatively quickly and they had a decent kids menu. The soup bowl and fish and chips were good but the fish pieces were pretty small. The burger looked somewhat poor quality meat but kid enjoyed it. Fries were also good.
