Hog Island is inconspicuously located inside of Bauhaus coffee shop. The sandwich board outside helped point me in the right direction. I've had two sandwiches from here--hopefully I have posted pictures to follow this review. My go-to at any sandwich store is the italian, so likely I got some version of that here--and the sandwich was great. PACKED full of meat and veggies, everything was fresh and tasty too. If you're in the area and in need of a sandwich, and want to pay HALF what you'll pay at Un Bien, I can't recommend this place highly enough. read more

This is located in a bar with a different name. It is definitely a pain in the ass to find the first time. The food is okay but I hate the bread they use. I struggle to bite through it. It ends up making a mess. Ideally you want the bread to have a crunch on outer layer but it should be soft enough to easily bite through while absorbent enough to soak up the sauce. Wow!! What a find. I've been in Seattle for 3 years and have been searching for a good deli. Although not a deli in the traditional sense, the Italian hoagie was the best I've had in Seattle. Great meat, oil and vinegar, and lil momma's peppers. Delicious. The tator tots as a side were a great touch, and they had a nice spot. Can't believe I've never been here and I live a mile away. what a letdown :( the highlight was the friendly service. the bar seems chill, and everyone there was very nice, so thanks. dang though, this sandwich was sad. $16 and hardly any meat, and also pretty skimpy amount of veggies. most of the sandwich was a stale-tasting, bland dry loaf of bread -- and horseradish. granted that spicy goodness is why i ordered the one i did -- the 50,000 horsepower -- but whew. it tasted like they crammed it all into one corner of the sandwich, so about a third of the way through, i got a nose full. tots were meh. nothing special, not bad. sadly wouldn't recommend this spot in an area sorely lacking in quick, reliable lunch spots. i guess go with royal grinders instead. read more

Really tasty (expensive) hoagies are all I ever get here. My favorite is the Hog Islander. So good. They're inside Petoskys and I'm not sure if under 21 is allowed inside. I'd call on that one. Street parking can be rough. Solid taps and full bar. I think the pizzas are only after 3 or 4 PM so I've never tried those. I don't live close so this is a sometime treat. read more

Ok I'll start with the good...for the most part, this was a really tasty sandwich. The meat, cheese and veggies were all fresh and high quality, and the pickles, peppers, and gardiniera were great. If that's where the story ended, this would be a 5-star review. The beginning of the bad is that for a $14 sandwich, there definitely wasn't enough meat (eg 2 slices of salami), and the bread was fairly dry, particularly at the butt ends. They also claim their sandwiches are 9", but as you can see my roll barely hit the 8" mark. If that's where the story ended, this would be a 4-star review. Where my visit really went downhill was watching my cold sandwich be made with bare hands. That's right, no gloves used to handle the meat, lettuce, onions, pickles - anything. The woman working here was very nice, and I didn't have the heart to say anything...but I should have. It should be glaringly obvious, even if we weren't in the midst of a pandemic, that you need to wear gloves when preparing ready-to-eat food in a restaurant. It also happens to be ILLEGAL not to. Not cool, and I definitely can't recommend you eat an establishment that has this attitude towards food safety. read more

Worst sandwich I've ever eaten. Or rather, NOT eaten since it went promptly in the trash after two bites. So tiny. Like the size of a Taco Bell bean and cheese burrito. The bread was massively underbaked, thin and stale. Filling was mostly iceberg lettuce and vinegar was the only flavor. Tater tots were too salty to eat. Saw the Hog Island Hoagie sign as I was walking by Bauhaus Ballard coffee shop( I don't walk and stare at my phone), I decided to come back another day to grab a hoagie for lunch. It may be tough to find, but it's inside Bauhaus Ballard coffee shop, so just go in there like you are ordering a latte or something but order a hoagie instead. Menus are on the counter. Everything inside is the same, it's just they are making hoagies in the back along with serving coffee. I checked out the menu, they have about 10 hoagies to choose from, so I decided to order the "British Armada". It's a cold hoagie that had turkey, ham, roast beef, cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions and those lil' pepperoncinis, and some other condiments like mustard, oil & vinegar etc. The hoagie roll was real good, it didn't collapse on me, seemed freshly baked that day. Pretty decently fat honker of a hoagie, about 10" long, and overall it was pretty tasty. All the ingredients seemed fresh, the meats were tasty, not sure how much is in-house but it was fine with me. Most of the hoagies were about $12, so it is a bit pricey for a sandwich. Not much other sides except chips and soda. There are vegan options for the vegans/vegetarians out there. Staff was friendly, it's the same staff as Bauhaus but they just use a different register to take your order on. I would come back to check out the other hoagies. I was pretty full after eating the entire hoagie, so I laid down on the couch afterwards and played Xbox. read more

The Italian hoagie was a good hoagie to be sure - the bread was simultaneously super fresh, sturdy, and tasty, and that can be a hard combo to come by when you get a sandwich delivered. Something felt like it was missing, though; like it was hearty and spicy, but there's a tangy element I like in an Italian hoagie that wasn't quite there. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed it. They also had Chickie's & Pete's Crab Fries flavored potato chips!! I didn't think anyone here even knew what Chickie's & Pete's was; like I was shocked. I've definitely never seen Herr's brand of anything on the west coast, literally ever. Also: I thought I had ordered a dill pickle on the side, but it was actually Herr's dill pickle flavored potato chips (oops). Very excellent chips. Would not have ordered 2 bags of chips, though. Not sure if they sell actual dill pickles or just the chips. For reference, delivery was a little over $32 for the sandwich and 2 bags of chips, including tip. read more

Overpriced sandwich that looked nothing like the pictures online. We ordered the italian hoagie and the bread was completely different, about half the size of the pictures they had on the website. The bread looked closer to a breadstick than a hoagie roll. All we asked for was no tomato, peppers, and onions and they forgot to put on vinegar, salt, pepper, oil, and oregano. On top of that it was a $17 sandwich that was finished in about 6 bites. If you're an east coaster, especially from the Philly area (like we are) don't make the same mistake we did. UM!?!? Why didn't I try this place before?! I pass this place constantly, as I live extremely close. I never really thought seriously about trying it for whatever reason- I'd pass it on the way to another place, or it just never came to mind when I thought of where to eat lunch. So you walk into the cafe (they do not have a separate entrance, it's part of the coffee shop), and you go to the left and there's a place where you specifically order sandwiches. I'm pretty sure they stop serving sandwiches at 4 pm, but the cafe is open a little later. They do have chips and some retro sodas to choose from but we had purchased our own elsewhere because we weren't sure if they did have these options. I ordered the Hoagan's Hero and it was delicious! Definitely would order that again, no question. It comes with oven browned turkey, smoked tavern ham, mortadella, white american cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, salt, pepper, mayo, deli mustard, oil and vinegar. I got mine sans onion and mustard. The bread was amazing, the meats were good quality, the veggies were fresh. The ratio of meats to bread to veggies was spot on. It was also a SUPER hefty sandwich for $11. At first when I saw they were $11 I was thought "omg Ballard are you serious", but honestly you definitely get a good amount for your money and it's good quality stuff. My boyfriend got their signature sandwich, The Hog Islander Hoagie. This sandwich reminded me of The Mantooth from The Other Coast in the heart of Ballard, but this place is way closer to us, and also this sandwich was better. I'm kind of shocked that there aren't a lot of reviews for this place because it is such a good hoagie. I'll definitely be back, not just because of convenience, but because service was chill and friendly, and the food was bomb. We ate our food on our apartment's roof top and contemplated if this place was named after the Pig War of 1859 that took place on San Juan island. (Whether it is or is not, you should probably look up that story if you don't know it and/or somehow didn't learn about it growing up if you went to public school in Washington. Holy effin WOW... Went here on suggestion of a homie whose friend started it up... In fact, had my entire nursing unit here in Ballard order up and so amazed at the flavors. It was really difficult to find this place, until I called and learned that it is actually in a coffee shop on the corner, not in its own location. Once inside, the staff was friendly in taking my order, with a nice, clean cafe establishment. As far as the sandwich, it was decent. I would have liked more zest/bite in their signature sandwich, which was just a bit bland for me. Good bread and good quality meat, but ya gotta dress it assertively to capture that true "hoagie" feel. Some places are just worth checking out again. Whatever complaints I had about timeliness in my last review will be unfounded by current patrons. My hoagie today was prepared promptly and adeptly. It took less than 2 minutes honestly and the high quality was consistent. You know, one thing I didn't notice last time that is worth mentioning is the bread. I don't think I've ever had a deli sandwich, grinder, sub, or hoagie where I was conscience of the bread's flavor. The bread on my Hogislander today was just outstanding. Pity the gluten intolerant, for they know not true joy. Finally, the horseradish sauce was the perfect puissance. Most of the time, horseradish leaves one's sinuses a dedicated wasteland straight out of a dystopian horror. Not this. It enhanced an already excellent sandwich. I'm not sure if it was an error in preparation or a "too creative" take on a Buffalo Chicken sandwich, but I was not impressed with the sandwich I received. I ordered a fireship sandwich, which was said to have Buffalo chicken and a blue cheese Buffalo sauce. So, I expected your classic spicy, slightly orange, guilt inducing Buffalo chicken hoagie. Instead, I got something that looked and tasted like a turkey sandwich with sweet peppers. Zero spice, and zero Buffalo taste, and certainly not work the $12 menu price. I understand it may have been a creative take on what one may think a Buffalo Chicken sandwich could be, or it could have been an error in preparation, but either way I was not impressed with the sandwich I received. Came the day after Christmas to try hog island for the first time. We called ahead of time using what Google said was their phone number. After confirming they were open, we made the trek down from Snohomish. Driving by the door we learned they are actually located inside the bauhaus coffee shop. We waited at the coffee counter to order or at least ask how to order the sandwhich and then learned that hog island was in fact closed. We were saddened that we came all the way down and weren't able to get a sandwich even after making the effort to call ahead. Hog island's website didnt have any indication (that we noticed) that they were not their own entity, which would've been very helpful in our situation. read more

Good sandwiches, but the barista working there this Tuesday afternoon was so busy talking to a customer on the coffee side he didn't even acknowledge my presence even though I was the only person standing there for 5 minutes.
