The simplest roll, yellowtail, was my favorite. Cuts of fish in all of the rolls were generous and excellent quality. Rolls were also not overloaded with rice. There was an excellent fish to rice ratio. Their special rolls have some very interesting combos. I can't wait to try them all. Although the angry dragon was outstanding so that will probably have to go on the regular rotation. So glad I stepped out of my usual ordering spots and gave this a try. What a local gem. I took my daughter for her first taste of Japanese cuisine. Big hit!! The food was amazing. Cooked to perfection everything. Literally I could find nothing a miss in any dish we tried. We had three appetizers everyone was very flavorful. Top shelf soy sauce as well. We also tried the California rolls which I loved. Then main we spilt a udon with chicken not a surprise once again perfection. Everything cooked to the right temperature for the ingredient. Sauce was amazing and I wanted to eat the rest at midnight. We resisted finishing everything because we wanted Mochi once again the right temperature and well presented. This is on our favorites list and our go to Japanese cuisine destination. A must-try if you're a big eater and want excellent value sushi for lunch! If you're not so much into All You Can Eat (AYCE) sushi and are more into a fancier sushi experience, you have a lot of options in the area and some must-try places in Chicago (Omakase Takeya is my personal favorite for special occasion sushi in the city). Hokkai Sushi's menu is more on the bare bones side when it comes to sushi. You have your standard selection of fish, and classic rolls you'll see at every sushi shop, the Cali Roll, the Alaska Roll, etc. But if you are looking for an excellent value as a big sushi eater, Hokkai rocks! For those who are first-timers to AYCE sushi - Order small and you can order more as you go along. AYCE sushi always comes with a "Pay for uneaten rice and sushi" notice, and you definitely don't want to be paying full price for rolls you could not finish. But if you know your limits, definitely go ahead and order to your heart's content! Appetizers here are very solid quality and included with your AYCE. I like the fried gyoza dumplings and scallops. Dumplings have a nice crisp-fried wrap, but not too greasy, and come with a bit of soy sauce to dip them in. Scallops here are covered in a light layer of flaky batter and are cooked very well - Crispy on the outside and milky delicious on the inside! Just don't be tempted to over-order on apps and not have space for the main star of the show, the sushi itself. Sushi, as mentioned, is your standard sushi menu with all the classic rolls and fish offerings. I have been here a number of times, and the sushi is always consistent. Very nice fish to rice ratio (They definitely do not pack in excessive rice due to the AYCE) and the fish is always fresh. The Rainbow and the Tempura rolls here are my favorite of that category, as they are very nice visually. The menu does a good job of describing what goes into each roll, and I recommend just picking anything that appeals to you. The AYCE menu during lunch doesn't include all of their available rolls, but having had the AYCE during both lunch and dinner periods, I never felt I was missing anything much, despite the much lower lunch price of about sixteen dollars compared to about twenty-four. A definite step up from your usual supermarket sushi and a good variety to fill up on. Service here is OK. Never had an issue, as they always keep your water or tea filled, always quick to remove plates you're done with, etc. and they don't drag their feet to ask if you are ready to order more if you're on the AYCE or if you've finished any of your alcoholic drinks. Definitely will continue to come back here for the AYCE lunch sushi, as it's a super value. Not the fanciest of sushi, but always a consistent and satisfying meal! read more

It was around 745. We finally get noticed 15 mins later at 8pm. We get seated, server came after 5 mins asking for our drink order. My husband gives her the form for the ayce sushi. I see nothing that I want in the menu. There is no udon, ramen or pork katsu. I settle and order the chicken teriyaki so I can share with my son. My husbands apps come out fast, same with the sushi. I'm just waiting and waiting for my entree so I can feed the kids. 850 rolls around and out waitress is nowhere to be found so I flag someone else and she says she will check. She comes back and says 5 mins which ends up being over 10. Again, restaurant not full. All I ordered was chicken that you dump sauce on. My food finally comes and it's more like pepper teriyaki chicken. My son isn't going to eat this. I give him my rice, ate 4 bites of chicken. It was dry and peppery. My poor son only ate rice. My daughter at least was able to eat some crab Rangoon. Not sure how this place got 4 stars. I gave it two only because my husband said it was okay. Not great, but okay. Won't be back. I mentioned it to the server and she said "it's cream cheese" so I ate a few pieces of the roll that did not seem to have pieces from another roll on it. To all AYCE sushi veterans and sushi lovers in training, only stick with AYCE lunch here (specifically the classic rolls) if you really wanna get your money's worth. This place has gone done hill over the years in terms of how much rice they keep adding to their nigiri. Surprisingly, the rolls come with very easy rice just like how they always used to when Hokkai opened. From eating at 10+ different AYCE sushi places in the Chicagoland area over the last several years, I can say with absolute certainty that Hokkai currently has the best fish to rice ratio for rolls (despite nigiri being a complete different story) and among the best fish quality out of any AYCE place in the area. Another thing about this place that I'm not a really big fan of is that they really don't attempt to get any more creative/flavorful beyond making a bunch of California and shrimp tempura rolls with just different sauces and toppings on top of each roll. There are just a lot of other better AYCE options in the suburbs when it comes to getting really tasty rolls (e.g. Sushi City/Sushi Naper and Sushi Nova). This and the fact that the nigiri is often very heavily packed with rice is why I only recommend opting for AYCE lunch -- as you can enjoy getting a lot of raw fish with relatively very little rice for only ~$16 by ordering mostly just classic rolls. In the end, with all the other AYCE options out there, I just don't really see a reason to come here outside of lunch hours. To add insult to injury, the service I've gotten here has generally been the most lukewarm and lackluster out of EVERY sushi restaurant I've been to. read more

This review is to address vegetarian options in more detail. There are several vegetarian options on the menu: appetizers include vegetable tempura or edamame; the miso soup appears to be veg; you can get sesame seed balls (not on the regular menu, but on the all-you-can-eat - still, they'll let you order them); sweet potato tempura; and sushi rolls. The sweet potato tempura and sushi rolls are marked with a green clover on the menu so you can find them. There are also salads but I didn't inquire as to which were veg. The tempura were delicate and lovely; the sesame balls were red bean paste inside a mochi type ball studded with sesame seeds and deep fried. You get about 6 for $6; we liked them very much. The sushi rolls are a bit bland but pretty: avocado; cucumber; asparagus; vegetable (asparagus/lettuce/avocado). I've never seen a cucumber roll before that was literally just cucumber; the pickled ginger (not dyed! huzzah!) and the wasabi came in handy. My partner, who normally doesn't like sushi, seemed to like them well enough. The mochi were served quartered and buried in whipped cream with sprinkles; the red bean was lovely; other options are strawberry, mango, or green tea. We had dinner for two with tea and mochi for about $40 including tip. This was our second attempt at dinner here; it was a rainy Saturday around 4:30, so it wasn't too busy. I ordered multiple rolls, the Hokkai roll, eel unagi, angry dragon roll, volcano roll, and octopus unagi. Every roll was delicious and so fresh. And they never over stuff your sushi with cream cheese. It's just the perfect amount. It's about $30 bucks with tax and everything for AYCE. Def got pricier. I have just moved into the area a little under two months now and have been at Hokkai a handful of times already. I have got to say, this place is hands down the best AYCE sushi I have ever been to. The sushi selection is slightly smaller compared to any other AYCE sushi restaurant. However, the quality here are undeniably incomparable to the many AYCE I have been to. The fish are much more fresh than most places I have been to, both a la carte and AYCE. Also, the fish on the nigiri sushi have a generous thick cut. I have always ordered the red and white tuna sushi each time I went to Hokkai, and it has never disappoint! As far as sushi rolls go, my boyfriend and I's favorites are the Green Turtle and Sweet 16 Roll - both rolls are a good compliment towards each other and would recommend ordering together! As far as the service goes, it never bothered us much, as we usually hit the early hour of dinner (around 5:00pm). The place is always empty when we arrive, so the food would come on a timely matter, and attention to service was on par, nothing in the odds. Hokkai sushi has an ayce for 21.95 that includes all speciality rolls. That alone should tell you something about this place. Fortunately you might assume that its low quality or they skimp on the fish like crazy and overload with rice, but I guarantee you it is not! This place is awesome, it's the 3rd time I've been here and every time it is the same awesomeness you can expect. I love their appetizers, almost all of them are delicious and hot (just made to order) The sushi and nigiri is great! The fish cuts on nigiri are pretty thick, not the thin pieces that you normally get during happy hour or other normal sushi buffets. And on top of that they aren't super strict about eating all the rice! Of course you are supposed to but we always "leaked" a little rice out of each nigiri and they seemed totally cool with it! For appetizers, I ordered two seaweed salad (my all time fave), shui mai, crab rangoons, fried shrimp, veggie tempura , and fried scallops. They brought the appetizers out on a timely matter. Presentation was great, was brought out fairly quick despite having a party of roughly 15 people. The issue here was the rice to seafood ratio was almost palpable. We were basically eating huge chunks of rice. Sushi is not meant to have rice that much especially if it extends past the actual seafood itself. Went here for lunch with two coworkers today and it was excellent. I had the chicken yaki udon (I'm not a huge sushi person) and it was filled with delicious noodles and lots of fresh veggies! Their pot stickers and crab rangoon are fantastic. They use such a light wrapper that you get all the good filling with a nice crisp exterior. Highly recommend. Seaweed salad was a new one for me, but I really enjoyed it! The sushi all looked wonderful and my coworkers kept saying how good each roll was. I wish they had bubble tea here, but that's ok.
