Fast service and staff is always very at Update***** I am updating my review as tonight when we had decided to come here for dinner, we found a piece of glass like substance in our sushi. After approaching the waiters about it, they just kept telling us it was plastic, not glass. In my opinion, it still should not be in our food. They offered to make us a new roll, but we didn't even want to eat there anymore due to that, and the customer service after we told them about it. I am not one to complain about food, but that was something they needed to know as it was a sharp piece. I wish that I had taken photos of it, but in shock I didn't even think about it. I have eaten here twice - 1 for lunch, 1 for dinner, and had the AYCE both times. Servers help multiple tables so you may get asked for things multiple times. I am fine with that because my drink stayed full and the table stayed cleaned up. The lunch AYCE menu is a bit shorter but I don't think you will notice unless you only like a specialty roll that isn't offered at lunch. But for sushi fans like me, this is a great way to get a little of everything, including nigiri. My favorite is the eel, which is prepared nicely here. Hokkai - you didn't leave me at WOWkai! It was a toss up between Hokkai and another sushi joint I've been to. Had this place bookmarked for awhile due to glowing reviews so we decided to come here. Not sure what the hype is all about. I noticed some reviews stating how great the interior is and being 'fancy'. I didn't find that to be the case for me. Different, but not really what I consider fancy. Neon lights in walls were interesting - but I've seen those before. Interior was a mix of modern and traditional and lighting was off depending on where you sat. We sat in the booth and the light above table was so bright I felt like a gigantic flashlight was on me the entire dinner. Way too bright....Yes, I'm all about ambiance and I prefer warm. It wasn't a busy night and plenty of servers were around when we walked in with a reservation. With the amount of Servers you would imagine service would have been more attentive. Our server came to our table maybe 3 times to check on us and seemed a little hasty. When I asked about the specials, she said the menu board in the front entrance lists them. Gee...she didn't know about the specials? I know I glanced at that board, but didn't remember all of them. Really? So I should get up and walk over to that board? Yeah, I don't think so. I expect the Server to know the specials and/or make an effort to find out and tell me. Service = 2 stars. As far as the rolls I didn't know they offered ayce and frankly the ayce is similar to many other restaurants I've been to. Is it a good deal for $22? Sure. But the rolls didn't blow me away. Premise/Introduction: A mom and pop shop sushi place that is excellent in quality and service. It is vibrant and the energy is pretty youthful. A nice, convenient location where it is easy to find parking and the staff is extremely helpful in finding what kind of sushi you are looking for. When you walk into the door, you have a long sushi bar to the left. You can just dine there if you'd like or wait to be seated at a booth or center table. It did start getting pretty busy so I can't fault the sushi chefs for taking time on our second round of sushi. Food/Product: I have been to quite a few different sushi places and this place was outstanding in terms of the quality of fish, the cut and presentation. They give thick cuts of fish especially on the nigiri and it tasted especially great with the soy and wasabi mix and siriachi sauce. The freshness of the tuna, salmon and yellow tail was excellent. Very filling and you can tell how fresh the fish is. Price: The price is extremely standard for AYCE (all you can eat) sushi. It was $21.95. For dinner, you're not going to find anything cheaper than this. It was worth the money since the quality was very good. Appetizers are also included if you order it. There are pot stickers, crab tempura, miso soup, etc. So you're definitely going to get your moneys worth. Overall Experience/Conclusion: This place is a great little mom and pop shop with excellent quality of food and good service. I came here for the AYCE lunch for a price of $17. They had a superb sushi selection. Every roll was very delicious, and tasted fresh. The non-sushi options (shu mai, gyoza, edamame, etc.) were also good, should you choose to order a few of them. Their specialty rolls were also interesting and yummy. The place was clean. My only complaint would be that service is a little too slow. It wasn't so packed when I went for lunch, but each order took a good while to come out. My recommendation for AYCE is to place your next order soon after you receive your previous order. I can't financially support Hokkai on my own, so I am calling on the help of the Yelp community. If this place closes down I will cry. You don't want to see me cry. We arrived around 5:45 pm on a Wednesday evening for a casual birthday dinner. The place was empty and silent but completely stunning. The owners definitely invested in the decor and remodel. Don't let the exterior of the building fool you. Service was an A+. We were cheerfully greeted by every employee of the restaurant upon arrival. Our water glasses were always full and our server was beyond helpful. We ordered the Angel Roll, Twister, Rainbow Roll, Spicy Tuna, and Spicy Salmon. The presentation was incredible. The other reviewers are indeed correct; each and every roll was boasting an enormous amount of fresh fish and very little rice. Freshest fish I've ever tasted. It was just such an overwhelmingly enjoyable dining experience I still can't get over it, twenty-four hours later. I couldn't pick a favorite roll because they were all so amazing. So I checked this place out after searching for all you can eat sushi near College of DuPage. Reviews pointed me in the direction of Hokkai and I was not dissapointed. Location: Just next to the Trader Joes on Roosevelt Road, Hokkai is easy to miss. From the outside it looks like a quaint hole in the wall. You know what they say about don't judge a book by its cover? Well the saying applies here. I walked in and was immediately impressed by the wood walls and contemporary lighting. Everything has a modern look and there is a surprising ammount of dining space you wouldn't expect from the outside. The decor reminds me of city Sushi places but without the pretentiousness. I dig it. Food: I ordered the lunch ACYE for 15.99 and it was delicious. I had a couple pieces of sushi and 2 rolls. I also had the veggie tempura appetizer. It was piping hot and a great portion size. The sushi included octopus which can be hot or miss in some places but it was great here. Their spicy tuna has a good kick too. I had a Tsingtao with lunch and the waitress brought it out in an iced mug. Service: Very nice staff. Checked on me consistently and very friendly. Bonus points for the chilled mug. All the fish just seem to melt in my mouth which ive never experienced before. The presentation was also very cool, so cool in fact i almost didnt want to eat and mess it all up. My wife was actually getting annoyed because i wouldnt let her touch the food until i took like 100 pics. The ambience of the place was also very trendy and modern and the only thing missing was more peoples. I went on sunday evening and my party were the only ones there. The server was also very sweet and took great care of us as well. You can tell they really take pride in providing great service/food and that in my opinion is what makes all the diff. The dinner menu is more robust, it includes apps such a seaweed salad and shrimp tempura. It also has more rolls that I wanted to order. And it had regular tuna sushi (piece of fish atop a small ball of rice), as opposed to white tuna sushi on the lunch menu. I started with seaweed salad, shrimp tempura, and scallop tempura. All were good. I ordered shrimp tempura, sweet potato, Hokkai, Rainbow, and Sweet 16 rolls. Hokkai was my favorite, the sweet potato my least fav. I did not see any dessert options on the menu, and frankly, was too stuffed to ask. The two reasons I'm giving Hokkai 3 stars instead of 4 is because: 1. They have no sashimi offerings on either lunch or dinner AYCE menus. 2. The service was spotty. The servers would all be standing around near the back, and multiple times I would make eye contact with one, she'd look right back at me, I'd wave, she'd look away, and another server would then head towards my table. Also had the avocado and shrimp roll and miso soup. This is the best sushi I have tried and by far the best tasting. The prices of the menu are not bad either. The rolls are perfectly stuffed with the featured ingredient. They don't overdue the rice which is the way it should be. I'm very picky about sushi, these don't fall apart like other places I've been to. We went on a Tuesday and the freshness of the fish left me wanting more. This will be the place I will frequent now. I walked in and I was immediately greeted and sat in a booth. I was handed a menu, a order form, and a pen. The all you can eat lunch special for $18.99 is absolutely worth it! Third time eating at Hokkai & I keep coming back for more. Throughout the years of eating out , I've limited my dining experience at buffets/all you can eats, as I've had my fair share of bad experiences at even the best of the best buffets/ all you can eat venues. For the price ($19.99) you can't go wrong with the all you can eat quality of sushi offered. You are provided a checklist where you check off the item ( appetizers, sashimi, and sushi rolls) & provide the quantity you would like. Make sure you don't go over board & order everything off the menu (unless you are able to eat every thing clean), otherwise there is a fee charged to ensure the business is not coming out with a loss of food / placing a dent in their pocket. I usually go with a 2-3 others and we usually end up ordering 4-5 appetizers and save room to order at least two rounds of sushi (usually 7-8 rolls) each round . Each roll comes in 7-8 pieces & are packed with the fish selection / sushi contents (they don't jip you here). Quality is amazing , I've had no complaints thus far with any "fishiness" or quality complaints. Everything looks fresh enough to keep ordering more. I highly recommend the "sweet 16", "Rainbow", and "Under Control" Rolls , my favorite. Fair to say everything on the all you can eat menu is fair game & just as good as the rest. I was looking for a lunch place to cure my Friday night's hangover. In addition to eating to fulfill my growling stomach before Saturday grocery shopping. Shall I say Tada, I present to you Hokkai's AYCE sushi lunch menu special for $15.99! At first I wanted to select everything on the menu from "Miso" to "Rock & Roll!" Then my inner mind trumped my growling tummy. So by process of elimination, my inner explorer decided to have items on the menu that I either could not pronounce or have never had before. I saw Marumaki? What is that? So I ever so eagerly marked one on that appetizer as I "Googled" it as I awaited it's arrival to my palette. Online research states that it is a Chinese inspired "spring roll." The Chinese introduced it to Japan during migration and the Japanese customized it by adding country inspired ingredients. Maru meaning Spring and that this was a food eaten that season and "maki" means roll. Hence any "Maki" is rolled sushi. I added my favorite salmon sushi and a yellowtail jalepeno roll. Both with fresh flavor and I like the underestimated rice. Finishing off, I wanted eel. Who doesn't love a little "ponzu" sauce. Aha, at the bottom of the AYCE menu I was "Rock & Rolling!" Fantastic dinner. Service was great. Friendly, helpful, and attentive. The apps were fresh and crispy. I had tempura scallops and shrimp, and they were high quality. The seaweed salad was fresh and flavorful. Even the fountain soda was worthy of a good comment because if you've ever had soda made with bad water, you'd appreciate the crisp clean taste of their Pepsi. There are many rolls to choose from. I had four, and they were all good. The rainbow roll was incredible. I would skip the volcano roll next time. Too "American". Heavy on the mayo and other sauce. Then I tried only three pieces of sushi because I was stuffed. Eel, octopus, and white tuna. Loved the eel, liked the octopus, the tuna was OK. I think I just got an edge or something because my tuna piece had one tiny edge of hard flesh. Overall, whether you're a veteran or brand new to Japanese cuisine, this is a winner! read more

My boyfriend and I just ate at Hokkai Sushi. The quality of fish and selections on the AYCE menu were wonderfully delicious. My favorite was the sweet 16 roll, the edamame and the gyoza! I love that they bring all of your round 1 order at the same time compared to places that bring rolls out one by one. I typically order water at restaurants however, My water tasted funny so I had to get fountain lemonade since they were out of iced tea The staff was attentive I thought but very soft spoken, it was hard to hear them. My only feedback was the ambiance. Although the venue was very clean and nice looking on the inside, there was no music. Best AYCE around. Fresh fish, extensive menu, helpful staff, delicious miso, great maki with many ingredients. I like the white ginger too.
