The wait can be long but it's worth it. This place draws an attractive crowd. Delicious food. We ordered Gra Pow waygu with a fried egg of course and hands-down awesome Bangkok Crab Fried Rice. With or without the lime and spicy fish sauce, it's a must order. The entire staff was friendly with great smiles. From the host, to the guys in the open kitchen, to our server. Our server had to be the manager or owner. Very classy lady. Broke down the menu in detail by memory. And she offered up drink suggestions especially the Smokey Lucky Lady sake. Had been eyeing this place since it opened in Atwater (and bc I love and miss street food from Bangkok), and got a last minute resy on a random Tuesday night for dinner with a girlfriend. It's a tiny place, with v limited indoor seating. We got there a few mins early and the place was already packed inside (~4-5 tables), so we were seated outdoors (under a heat lamp). The energy is lively, but not too loud. What we got (food/drinks): they were annoyingly out of quite a few items we were interested in, and we were disappointed to learn that the DTLA and Atwater menus are different (some items are in DTLA vs Atwater and vice versa). We got the pad see ew and the grandma's fried fish. Both were incredibly tasty-- I felt like I was back on the streets of Bangkok. We also got the Hibiscus Agave Oolong tea which was so good! Per the business owner's response, the hostess stated the drinks could be stored in the fridge which seems like it would be a major health violation. We were never told they could be stored outside. - - - I was really excited to try this place and walked up with a matcha in hand from a nearby coffee shop. The hostess told us some weird story about the health department and how we couldn't sit down with our drinks. She said she could store them in their fridge, which seems like even more of an issue. I'm so glad to see Holy Basil open here in Atwater Village near Silverlake! My boyfriend and I used to frequent the one in DTLA when he used to live in the Arts District for our Thai food cravings, and it never disappointed us. I was so pleased with my dining experience at the new location, Holy Basil Market, where it offers a totally different menu from its first location in DTLA.   On the menu, you will see some classic Thai food with a twist, and all the dishes we tried were beyond amazing. The freshest ingredients prepared in the simplest way turn into unique dishes with a burst of flavors and texture.   So we tried Wild Shrimp Aguachile, Papaya Salad Fish Crouton, Scallops (daily special), Nam Tok Angus Beef Tataki, Soft Shell Crab Salted Egg Brown Butter, Tiger Prawns (daily special), Crying Tiger Short Ribs, Dungeness Crab Fried Rice, along with Thai Iced Tea and Hibiscus Bubble, which was quite refreshing with the perfect sweetness!   Every dish was amazing. The aguachile was so good with a Thai twist, which was very interesting in a really good way. You can also add uni for extra, which will add layers of its distinct creamy and sweet flavor profile to spicy, tangy shrimp. Each dish is so good that I can't just recommend one, but if you do get a chance, try as many as possible! Dungeness Crab Fried Rice was unique in a way; it was prepared with purple rice and did not feel greasy at all. I personally love the purple rice, so I love it so much. The sauce for Tataki was amazing and also the brown butter sauce for the soft shell crab was so delicious that I wanted to get a bowl of plain white rice and eat it together.   Since they use the freshest ingredients available, any dish you try won't let you down. Dessert was the perfect finish to our dinner, and we never had anything like it. I was told it is not on the menu yet, but that Lotus Ice Cream was indeed one of the best I had. The other dessert, which consisted of mango and orange, also looked great, but I am allergic and could not try them. My boyfriend said it was very uniquely pleasing.   There may be some waiting, even on weekdays. I encourage you to make reservations if possible, but walk-ins are doable if you're willing to wait a bit.   With amazing staff, food, and atmosphere (and being close to Silverlake), I can see myself coming back very soon! read more

It's a small quant place. A few sitting. Casual dining. Very authentic Thai cuisine. All the dishes were flavorful. They even have a jumbo prawn flown fresh from Africa that evening we went on a Saturday. Reservations can be made via Resy. It's a small and cramped restaurant and you'll be sitting in a covered alley way on little stools reminiscent of street market fare. There's a lot behind the establishment that fills up quickly, but you also have plentiful street parking. Let's talk food. Our server was so well versed on the menu and gave some excellent recommendations and commentary on each dish. We eventually ordered: Pad See Ew - this is not the flat noodle we are accustomed to, but a thin rice noodle. The noodles actually absorbed the sauce more efficiently as each bite was a flavor explosion. The pork was soft and tender and gave a great contrast to the snap of Chinese broccoli. Scallops - nice, fresh, and a little tamarind sweetness. Eggplant - this dish surprised me. It was perfectly cooked. Often times eggplant are either too mushy or undercooked and hard. This skated that line and was just pleasant. Crab Fried Rice - I love fried rice so this might be biased, but loved everything about this. They used REAL crab and you could see chunks peppered throughout the mixture of rice. The egg had one of the most beautiful colored yolks and highly recommend you get it added. The short rib or rib tip - It was served on a nice flat bread that used as your delivery device to your mouth. You could order a side of rice, but we ended up enjoying it more with the flat bread. Second location that recently opened (as of 4/2024) in busy stretch of Atwater Village along Glendale Blvd. I've had the original downtown location bookmarked for a long time (still haven't been), but decided on this place for dinner for a group of friends hanging out at a house in Glendale. That said, we ordered take out so I can pick up on my way to my buddy's place. So I wasn't able to fully experience the ambiance of eating here. Also, and understandably so, there were certain raw items that you can only order when dining in. Between four people, we ordered: - Gra Pow Wagyu - Moo Krob Slav - Shrimp Kaeng Karen - Sheimp Yellow Curry - Crispy rice salad - Pad see ew Overall, I really loved our meal. I enjoyed everything and the heat level wasn't overwhelming. The dishes here are great for sharing and split between four people, it didn't feel overly expensive as well. Hoping to come back soon and eat at the restaurant to get the full experience and menu there. Parking could be stressful and tough in this area, especially during peak meal times, but I was able to find a spot behind the building in the parking lot. I took my kids here last week and there were four of us. We didn't make any reservation, but we were willing to wait for our table. It took about 45 minutes before we got seated. Let me tell you it was worth the wait. Thai food here was amazing. Good, unique and different. I am Thai by the way and normally I like to go to my usual place on Hollywood Boulevard but I wanted to try something different based on their great review. I was very impressed and cannot wait to go back. Service was nice and friendly. We order Thai bites Miang Kham and it was intense with flavor and delicious. Takes me back to home. The crab fried rice was irresistible. I ended up ordering one more to take home. Drunken noodle was well prepared with their specialty XO sauce and pork belly, which was fresh and very tasty. As a Thai person, Holy Basil went beyond my expectation for Thai food in LA. I have given up going to Thai restaurants to for my Thai food fix. If you want to try authentic Thai food no need to look further. Hands down the best Thai food in LA. It's located in a small alleyway with nice outdoor seats. You know when you found the spot when on the menu they indicate "we politely decline substitutions or changes to the menu to preserve the integrity of the dish." We ordered Moo krob, Nam tok Angus beef tataki, Gra pow wagyu beef with fried egg, Thai tea and Leo beer. Everything was perfect. I highly recommend the nam tok angus beef tataki. The sauce and the fresh herbs you cannot sleep on. They perfected moo krob, got the crispy skin and tender meat that I could never find that anywhere in LA. One thing I hope they consider adjusting is Thai tea. I wish they have added more condensed milk. Excellent service when we visited on Thursday February 6th. read more

I love holy basil probably my favorite Thai spot around Atwater. It's a pretty small space so make sure if you have a large party to make reservations probably not great for parties greater than four. Prices are average for this area expect to spend around 30-40 per person at least. Servers are all really nice but they might seem rushed because of how busy they are. They expanded their menu to have more delicious items since their soft opening. Shrimp aguachile: super punchy ceviche only bad thing was that there wasn't enough. I even ate the deep fried shrimp that was included too. shrimp curry: sweet and savory and so good. Would recommend getting it with a side of jasmine rice to soak up all the sauce. Pad see ewe: they use more fine noodles over the fat noodles and it was good and an interesting take. Holy wings: good appetizer. Comes with four pieces. We went here for family dinner on a Sunday around 7:30pm. It was pretty difficult to make reservations on yelp for some reason. So we tried contacting them. But no answer due to maybe how busy they probably were. I ended up making reservations on the app 'Resy' a lot easier. We were worry that we wouldn't find parking due to the location (located in the heart of Atwater) top of that it was a weekend. Luckily it took us 5-10 minutes to find parking literally in the parking lot right behind the restaurant. But be mindful coming to the area on the weekend usually are the craziest. So parking would most likely be tough We waited 15-25 minutes after our 7:30 reservation which we didn't mind at all. The host was very sweet and kept updating us. The restaurant is pretty cozy, there were probably 2 or 3 small tables outside as for inside let's just say if you have claustrophobia then you will definitely will be uncomfortable. So we ended up getting a table towards the back of the restaurant, including myself there were 3 of us pretty snugged. We were probably about a foot away from the other tables. It was extremely busy so we waited a bit for our server to come. We took the time to look at the decor and the cute paintings they had on their wall When it came to ordering our drinks + foods, they were MOSTLY out of everything which we were pretty bummed out about but understanding. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Unfortunately my sister who chose the place didn't really do her research because my brother has a shellfish allergy*** most of their foods are with shellfish so PLEASE be aware of that. He pretty much ordered white rice and Crispy pork belly. Let me tell you when we had the crispy pork belly 1000/10, I had to order a second round... that was probably the best I've ever had. Could not stop eating. We also ordered their Pad See Ew, Heirloom pork egg roll, and Beef Rib eye. All of them were so tasty!! Great portion too. Can I start off with "WOW"? That's what my mind thought when I bit into the chicken wings we ordered from Holy Basil. It's a pretty convenient location even though parking can be a bit tough at times. I'm not sure that I would have gone to the DTLA location, but wanted to try them out prior to them landing on the 101 list because duh, it's near my location. We also ordered their dark rice w/jasberry rice. It was amazing! We ordered our food for pickup with plenty of time in advance (2 hours), and our order took 25min longer than expected!! I mean their food was good, but that brought me down. It's not your typical sit down place either, so you have regular consumers and bystanders walk next to you if you happen to want to eat on site. Tonight was our first time and we decided to try the fried chicken wings, wild shrimp aguachilles, soft shell crab and shrimp in salted egg brown butter sauce, crab fried rice, beef short rib panang, and pork belly. The dishes are served family style and are perfect for sharing. The food is so AMAZING and they tasted familiar yet new at the same time. The layers and complexity of the flavors had us guessing the ingredients. If I had to pick my favorites they have be the shrimp aguachilles and the soft shell crab and shrimp in salted egg sauce! These two dishes are a must try for sure! Reservations are recommended as there is limited seating, but it's worth the wait if you decide to walk in. However, the food missed the mark for 3/4 dishes. Something can be advertised as "healthier" but if it doesn't taste good then I'm not interested lol. Pad See Ew: probably the best dish we had. It's different than other Pad See Ew I've had before, but in a good way. Would recommend. Wild Shrimp Fried Rice: hard pass on this. Includes 3 shrimp; let's try to get that to 4 shrimp please, sauce and rice. As you can see in the pic, the rice is glistening from the use of too much oil, hence giving it a greasy taste. There was a weird grainy texture to it too; for anyone who's never washed rice before cooking it, you know what I'm talking about lol. We didn't finish this dish because it felt way too heavy to eat. Lemongrass Mussels: this dish was a bit basic. Yea I'll say it, it needs more muscle behind those mussels. Wasn't bad, just didn't have much flavor. Mushrooms: mushrooms covered in a curry sauce sums it up. Wasn't memorable so I can't say too much about it. We did have a funny moment now that I think back. Our waitress asked "how wonderful was the food?" I froze since the question made an assumption that wasn't accurate, and answered with "it's ok..." I would like to try their DTLA location to see how it compares. There's a lot of competition in LA for Thai food and I def have other spots that I prefer to this spot. It's definitely not your typical Thai restaurant; it's creative and hip. The tea is that this place is an excellent mid to higher tier restaurant that happens to serve some Thai inspired dishes. Wow this restaurant is so innovative! Extremely fresh ingredients, very knowledgeable service staff, and a really great twist on Thai classics. We were served by our server Bentley. He was very knowledgeable about the menu and was helpful when we were ordering. Very friendly guy! I must preface this review by saying that this place is a restaurant that slings out fine dining food on foldable tables and plastic chairs you'll find on the streets of Bangkok. Their actual dishes are mismatched but their flavors and presentation is phenomenal. So with great ingredients, great service, and innovative menu do not expect your bill to be the same price that your local mom and pop Thai restaurants slaves away making only $3 profit per Pad Thai plate. If this doesn't appeal to you, I recommend you steer clear and find something more "bang for your buck." The scallops in seafood sauce was phenomenal. The texture of the sauce, the taste of the sauce, really complimented the scallops served on the shell over ice. The calamari larb had fresh shallots, great larb flavor with toasted rice, toasted shallots, and great texture on the calamari. The crudo was also good but I fear we may have ordered too much, I recommend 2 dishes per person to share. Dungeness crab fried rice was phenomenal. Great wok flavor to the fried rice, just the way mom makes it. I recommend the fried egg, we also used the seafood sauce left over from the crudo to eat with the fried rice. We also go the sea bream special that was fried with 3 flavor sauce. Delicious! A bit pricey though so make sure you pay attention when they tell you what the market price is. I went on a weekday right when they opened, without a reservation, and we were lucky enough to be seated at the bar right away. I highly recommend making a reservation, though, as it's a smaller restaurant. The open kitchen is a fun touch, letting you watch the chefs work their magic. This is my second time eating at Holy Basil and I can safely say that I feel comfortable ordering new things from this menu. The first time I was here I opted for the moo krob and shrimp curry, which were amazing. I came back intending on ordering these again, but this time, I was feeling adventurous. I went for the soft shell crab and the braised duck. I'm so glad I didn't just stick to what I knew was good, because the crab and duck were just as fantastic! The duck was juicy and tender like a filet mignon. And the soft shell crab was crispy and flavorful. Hot tip: order rice with these dishes to soak up extra sauce. So good! The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive. They did a great job telling us about their specials. As for ambiance, I love the vibe of this place. It's tucked away in a covered walkway.
