Love the flavor of all their dishes. My favorites are the wild shrimp curry and the holy wings. The wings are perfectly crisp and flavorful. The skin is also fried down to a thin layer so good. They're a decent portion as well. The wild shrimp curry you have to add rice. It's so savory and perfectly seasoned. Love it!! I order to go since it's a really small location with about five small table or so. Customer service is great and efficient. The food is worth the wait. The food is great here and I've been here a dozen times. The upselling is so aggressive though, to the point where the serve has teased us for being "lame" for not ordering drinks and on another occasion, shading is for not ordering the more expensive sake. Food is amazing and very well flavored. So that is truly the most important. The place is small with a few tables outside and in. The ambience is mid and no frills - down to earth and low key. It got a little chilly sitting outside near the bathrooms so there was that. The specialty grapefruit soda and grapefruit basil tea were really refreshing but a little overpriced at $10. I added an egg to my eggplant dish (spicy and delish) that was +$4 more. Eggs are expensive these days but $2 would have been more reasonable. read more

Holy basil is unreal. Everything we had was phenomenal. Thai teas with milk were a perfect drink to pair with it all. Pork belly had to be the crispiest pork belly I'd ever had in my life and the green sauce they serve with it?? Perfection. Beef tataki is flavorful. Shrimp aguachile was so refreshing with the perfect amount of heat. Scallops on half shell with oyster special had one of the most delectable bites ever. And that panang short rib was so good I could've ordered another plate. Overall my only flaw was the fact that I didn't save any room for dessert. Highly recommend a reservation as you will have to wait if you just walk in. I like the inside seating as it felt cozy and you feel like you're in someone's kitchen. The food and service were amazing. The staff is very attentive and will help with recommendations. Wonton Nachos- 9/10 Texture was nice with the rest of the meal. This missed the flavor mark for me but it definitely is an app. We added this towards the end and then realized we could've skipped on this. Panang Short Rib- 10/10 This is a meal itself if you order it with a side of rice. Very flavorful and is one of their most ordered. Grandma's Fish and rice- 10/10 I'm not usually a fan of fish sauce but this has flavor once you mix in the fish sauce. This is definitely comfort food! Pad see ew- 10/10 Big flavor! Make sure you order this even though you might be used to the wide rice noodles. The vermicelli noodles really soaks up so much flavor you won't be disappointed. I had really been excited to try Holy Basil the last few months. I've had Thai food all over Socal and this has received a lot of hype. Unfortunately, I don't think it lives up to it. The food tasted pretty good, but I just can't justify spending $300+ for 3 people with only 2 items in each course and no dessert. Yes, we did get Sake, but I think Thai food should be relatively affordable and this was an elevated take on the cuisine. read more

Snagged an early reservation on Resy for Holy Basil at their Atwater Village location. Our table on the patio was great. The server had excellent reccos, loved everything that we had. The pad see ew had a thinner noodle than we were accustomed, but delish with lots of flavor! Highlights were the seafood: scallop special (not pictured), softshell crab and the prawn (don't sleep on the server's tips about how to eat it!). The green papaya salad was cool and refreshing but also packed a bit of heat with the chilis in the dressing. The sever recommended their rosemary infused drink special that did not disappoint by being subtle with the herbal notes and refreshing. Was bummed they were out of sticky rice so we got Jasmine instead and used it to sop up the spicy sauces from the softshell crab and duck dishes. Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu. read more

This place has been on my list for so long, finally got to try it this past Monday. We got the cold apps sampler, soft shell crab salted egg brown butter, gra pow wagyu beef w egg and grandmas fish and rice. The dishes are definitely unique and on the pricier side. I think it's worth trying but not sure if I'll revisit any time soon. They pretty much only have outdoor seating and where we sat, they didn't have a working fire pit, so the food got pretty cold pretty fast. Holy Basil is located in a hidden alleyway that gives you the feeling of real street food place. The staff is very nice and helpful and the food is great! They have a great selection of sake and wine and a lot of them can be great pairing for the dishes on the menu. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is that I wish the portions were bigger for the price since we were only 3 people and spent about 200$ but didn't feel we had a lot of food worth the buck. Worth the hype! Food was decently portioned, prices fair, and flavors were authentic. Will definitely be back especially once they've worked through some of the early kinks! We came by Saturday night for dinner around 7 with a res and things seemed a bit discombobulated. It took at least 5 minutes for someone to check us in and even once we were checked in it took a while to be seated. Staff just seemed a bit overwhelmed and confused but No biggie! Once seated the waitress ran through the menu and specials one of which the soft shell crab fried rice piqued our interest. Just as we were ready to order another waitress let us know it was sold out so definitely a bummer but wish there was better communication amongst staff. Besides the small bumps in the road the food was stellar! We ended up getting the following: - Grandma's Fish and Rice (10/10): simple, texturally divine, and nostalgic. Tastes like something your grandma would lovingly make you after school! This dish is comprised of a fried fish filet, white rice, and some shallot, garlic, and seasonings which balance each bite - pad see ew (9/10): delicious and perfectly seasoned, super refreshing and light in comparison to the traditional flat noodle versions - Thai omelette (9/10): YUM! The food is delicious and different and the presentation is sweet and clever and these cute small plates. I have been there a number of times and am craving the crab friend rice! Man this place is legit. I'm usually not a fan of fancy shmansy hipster restaurants but every single dish we ordered was so packed with unique flavors. I love when a place isn't afraid to take risks with their dishes and this place does just that. We ordered basically every appetizer plus the grandmas rice dish. The grandmas rice dish looked dry but it was so good especially with the sauce they give you on the side. The only dish that was a little disappointing was the pork. It was cooked perfectly but the sauce just didn't match the meat. It tasted better with the sauces from the other dishes. Service was also great. The server was attentive but didn't bug us too much and let us enjoy our food. Ambiance is also really cool in a cute little alley. Okay maybe I do like fancy shmansy hipster restaurants. Fantastic food at a good price point and excellent service. My friends and I wanted to find a place between Burbank and Torrance to meet up and came here (we almost went to their DTLA spot). Anything that comes with their Holy Sauce is a must try. We had the wings, pork belly, and scallop appetizers which were fantastic! For entries we had dungenous crab fried rice, moo krab, Pad See Ew, and the shrimp curry. Service was friendly and helpful. If I lived in the neighborhood I'd be ordering take out all the time. We came to the soft opening of Holy Basil after the last and longest week of January. It is February now (w/ a bonus leap year day). Upon arrival, we wrote our name and party size (5) on a piece of paper hung on the door. We were a little worried that there wouldn't be enough space to seat all 5 of us. We talked to the friendly hostess and expressed our slight concern and she immediately reassured that there would be space for us in about 30 minutes. To kill some time, we went to Homestate next door to get queso & margaritas. We sat at a table outside next to the hostess. She came over to us and told us about a secret table in the back. We were so excited & couldn't wait to dine at our secret table! We were eating our chips & queso and drinking our margaritas when she came over and told us our table was ready. Uh Oh! We had to chug our margaritas! (those xl margs are hitting on an empty stomach) There's an open kitchen concept and we love to see whats happening. When we were escorted to our seating arrangement, we were walked to the back of the building and told "wait here" and we did. As we waited in anticipation to see our "secret table" we joked that we might be seated in the walk-in. LOL. moments later the back door swung open and out popped a head and she said "welcome to the back door!" we walk inside the back entrance into the heart of the kitchen. I feel as if we are in "The Bear" seeing the kitchen alive with dinner action. It's intimate and organic. Refreshing. Sorry, gotta go food's here! The shishitos came and a yeah they're really good not quite as blistered as some. never have I had a Thai aguachile, but it sure was tasty. Okay, we're back. Food was great! Very full. Very YUM! the chicken wings are perfectly crispy with a super tangy thai chili sauce. The pork satay was incredibly tender and perfectly accompanied by a rich and not-too-peanutty sauce. the winner of the evening was for sure the pad see ew. perfectly cooked thin rice noodles (vermicelli if you will) absolutely exploding with flavor. the beef tataki app CANNOT be missed. Came here to see Joy and Deaus creations that I've heard great things about. The food was decent, but the atmosphere felt off. Staff seemed really stressed and unsupported, it was hard not to notice. I love coming to this place whenever I'm in the area because I'm not able to get this kind of Thai food around where I live. The location is great and isn't too busy during the week. All the servers here are great, too, especially Bentley! He always knows what we need and takes care of our group. The beef tataki, rock fish, papaya salad with fluffy fish on the top, and the grandma fish and rice are amazing. I always come back for these and definitely recommend them. Not a great start. We walked in for table of 2. Hostess indicated she had a table of 2 at the bar that was ready and available - already set. Proceed to wait about 15 minutes before she finally got around to seating us, with continual reminders to clear the narrow alley waiting area that face the public restrooms. Ordered wine by the glass - smallest $17 pour we ever received. Server stated it's 4 ounces but I strongly question. The sampler appetizer was uninspiring and bland. The fish curry had four minuscule pieces of processed fish cakes and loaded with noodles in a sweet spicy Penang sauce. When we informed our server, she defended "the fish is blended in the sauce" (would be nice to have this mentioned on the menu). The manager ultimately removed the uneaten dish from the bill. The pad see ew was a greasy hot mess. On top of this, we were interrupted constantly by staff stacking bowls and plates stored above our bar seating. This place is basically expensive Thai food for hipsters. read more

Had some good authentic thai food here. The must haves are the whole fish, the large prawn, and scallop dish. Theres a fried rice with beef that was pretty good too. Papaya salad was great and refreshing and of course you'll need a thai tea. Only issue was the seating. We had a larger party that included family that was visiting from the philippines. We were not only seated at different tables but some of our party was indoors and the rest were outdoors. Completely separated. Couldnt even catch up with them which was the main reason for the dinner. When we were waiting for the 2nd and 3rd table they had given away our 3rd table and the 2 tables outside had to squish. Party of 6 at a 4 seater table. Its very tight even outdoors. Communication with server was not good but other than that the food is good overall read more
