Well deserved 5 stars. I'm a native east coaster straight from the heart of New Jersey where pizza rules and this my friends is probably the closest to NY/NJ pizza you are going to get. Really tasty. Besides the great food was the great atmosphere and even better staff. Also as a mom to three young kids it ain't easy going out to eat sometimes but let me tell you they gave our kids balls of pizza dough to play with while we waited for our food and they were entertained foreverrrrr! Might be the best in Austin, but maybe it's the water or the simple environment difference, but NY still reigns by a long shot. Large slices and hot out the oven. Harder than usual and foldable, but needs more oil. Pepperoni and meatball good on the pizza and at $4 a slice not crazy expensive for the area. Will be full on 2 slices for sure. Garlic knots are big and served with 4, but not worth it. Too much bread and don't have that quintessential fold that NY is proud of. Marinara sauce good but stick to the pizza. After 9:30 they serve by the slice at the brick and mortar so nice late night spot after drinking. read more

Truth be told, I've always been a little intimidated to try this place. It's one of those famous Austin spots but it has always confused me. Do I go up to the counter and order? or can I go inside? Well, today was the day I conquered my fear and figured this place out. The service was impeccable. My husband I both ordered softdrinks, and before I was even 3/4 done our server placed a brand new drink before me. There was no having to hunt down the server while I'm dying of thirst. This impressed me. Whenever I'm trying a new pizza joint, I always get the Margherita pizza. That way I have a base. The whole pies only come in medium or large. The medium was WAY too big for the both us. We ended up only eating half. The pizza was good enough, but it seemed a little greasy. Now that I understand this place a little bit better, I'll be back to try some of their other delights. Who knows, maybe next time I'll try the walk-up window. read more

Okay, I haven't yet had the opportunity to experience pizza in New York, but until then, Homeslice will do for me. I love the way this pizza is put together - the physiology of these pies makes them my Austin fave (so far). The crust is thinner than others, more crisp/cracker-like, with just the right amount of sauce, cheese and toppings to harmonize - i.e., not too much. I'm especially a big fan of the margherita pie. Plenty of garlic and LOADS of fresh basil put Homeslice way out front for me. Are the ingredients (sauce, cheese) less than top-shelf, as some others have penned? In all likelihood, I imagine, but for me that is no matter: A bite into one of these über-thin slices is an experience of unity between crust, sauce and cheese. The harmony is spot-on, so I'm not gonna worry so much if the tenor is wearing a cheap suit. Some of the very best pizza I've had elsewhere has been pretty humble stuff. Yes, there are caveats, to be sure. I'm not crazy about waiting over an hour amidst the throngs of SOCO hipsters for a dinnertime pie. That long a wait can easily build one's "this better be good" expectations to the point where, unless you're totally committed to thin-crust Nirvana, as I am, you're likely gonna want that hour of your life back. That leaves me to mostly order slices of Margherita pie during off-hours, and hope some daily special slices are on offer (i.e., other than cheese or pepperoni). That strategy has its hazards: I've had some slices that seemed like they'd been hanging around a little longer than usual, that haven't been heated enough, etc. But I'll continue to go back and suffer through those inconveniences and imperfections for pie that is put together in a way that "just does it" for me. read more

Love this place! Home Slice was one of the very first places we ate when we moved to Austin. We just made a return visit this weekend and it was every bit as great as it was the first time. The pizza is some of the best in Austin, the prices are affordable, and all the staff we interacted with were super friendly. Be prepared to wait if you go at a busy time. On Saturday we had an hour wait, though we were told an hour and 45 mins. The first time we went we were told 45 min wait and it ended up being 15 mins. The waits are rarely as long as they say- so unless its a super long time, order some drinks and sit down out front and people watch. read more

Pizza by the slice bro! That's what I'm talking about!! This place is a must if you're looking for pizza in Austin. So quick and convenient! The only thing I really had trouble with was finding parking but there's a lot with about 35 spaces for parking adjacent to the restaurant but connected to a nearby church. I got the pepperoni and mushroom pizza and the margherita pizza. Both were so good! I think the margherita also had some pesto on it. I inhaled them both pretty fast. The crust in its entirety (the whole bread) was the perfect crispy texture, which was my favorite part of the pizza. It's a small place so it might be hard to grab a seat and eat, but if you're lucky like I was, you can watch the workers make the pizza in front of your face! Super cool! read more

Hands down my favorite pizza in Austin. Great thin crust New York style slices. They have your standard pies like Peperoni and Sausage, and they have more unique stuff like Meatball and Onion. I have also had the Meatball sub which is good. They have a Lemon Shaved Ice type dessert (it's sort of like Sorbet) that is great. It's basically just ice with lemon flavoring.. but damn, it was tasy and very refreshing. I honestly don't know what else to say about this place. It is just a great pizza joint in South Austin. If you like NY Style pizza you have to take a trip to Home Slice. Every time I go to visit Austin, my friends tell me to eat here. I never really got around to it till recently, back in May. The wait was ridiculous, but expected. We waited about an hour for a table. Granted, we were a larger than normal party. I think we had 8? I wouldn't have minded the waiting, it's just.. summer was starting, so it was hot and humid outside, and there weren't many places to sit, so my feet got tired and I ended up wandering over to a short wall that surrounds a giant house next door to rest my feet. The service was pretty good. But I didn't particularly like the pizza. Let me just start off by saying I'm not a big fan of pizza, mostly because of the tomatoe sauce. I despise ketchup with a passion, so pizza is hard for me. I normally avoid the sauce or order a pizza sauceless. I am wiling to take a bite of any new pizza, though. I am not afraid! Which I did here. None of the pizzas we ordered I took any kind of liking to, unfortunately. Everyone at my table liked it, but.. I just wasn't satisfied. The Whole Foods that makes our Madison location look like a 7-11. But who goes to Austin and makes it a point to get pizza? This guy. And he gets it at Home Slice. I've had the real thing in NY, a lot. Anyone can claim they make an authentic New York pie, but Home Slice truly brings it. The crust is almost like it's made with piped-in Adirondack water, the sauce from tomatoes grown right out back in mama mia's garden, and the cheese layered and melted just so. Didn't think I'd spend a precious meal during my first visit to Austin eating pizza, but this is real New York pizza, no question. The last pizza joint I reviewed was Joe's in the West Village, and Home Slice is right up there. Ordered 1 slice of cheese, dusted it with garlic powder, folded it over once, and ate it in about 3 minutes. I am sure my one review of 192 won't change your mind, but I also felt the need to share my review. I have never been one to crave pizza, that is until I met Home Slice. They encompass the perfect pizzeria. I was there yesterday for their 3 year celebration and it was so kooky and fun. There was someone drawing "Luigi" mustaches on everyone, so there were families in the restaurant all dining "Luigi" style. There was a band playing out front with their washboard and accordian and gettin everyone in the groove. It is family friendly without being chucky cheese family friendly. Have I mentioned that there was the best hair rock playing in the background? I couldn't help rockin out while enjoying my pizza. What makes the pizza great to me is the fresh ingredients (inaddition to everything listed above). I always get garlic, pepperoni, mush, onion and peppers and it just can't be beat. I am such a sucker for fresh garlic. The service has always been outstanding when you know it can be a complete madhouse in there I have always been helped with a smile. In my opinion, the BEST pizza in Austin. Always busy, always a wait. Always Fireman's #4 on draft, a barstool at the bar, and a friendly face on the other side. The anchovies are tasty, and that goes a long way in my book. Pizza is thin and 'just right.' Although they are closed on a weird night (Tuesday's) any other night you can walk up to the window, order a slice and a beer, and sit outside on the street and watch SoCo full of life and commotion. Home Slice Pizza has pizza so good you'd swear a unicorn is in the back sprinkling fairy dust into the sauce. The only bad part is that you eventually have to leave. I tried a slice of pepperoni and a slice of sausage + garlic (a special of the day) - both were delicious, with a perfectly thinish crust that reminds of a perfect loaf of warm french bread (French bread probably dreams of being this thin and being covered by such luscious toppings). Neither slice was greezy (I hail from Missouri originally and that's the standard by which diners are judged) nor dripping with oils as some pizzas. The pizza was very flavorful, a sign of a perfect sauce. I'd say that I regret not having some leftovers to eat later cold, but I have no regrets (except maybe eating that brick of a rice krispy treat afterwards - and that regret is only because I was already full). The place was packed, inside and out, yet the line wasn't that long - about 2 or 3 min. It seemed to have a never ending flow of picker uppers. Clearly a local favorite in a great community. The staff (2 people behind the counter) were friendly as all get out and kept the place very clean. It's hard to truly describe a Vibe, but this place gave me great vibe. As a native northeasterner from the NY/NJ area, I am quite opinionated about pizza...but this place has pizza which reminds me of the NY-Style pizza back home! We ordered a margherita pizza. The pizza dough is very tasty and the vegetables tasted very fresh. We did feel there was a bit too much cheese, but it did not affect the delicious flavor. I recently went to Home Slice for the first time for lunch on a Monday. Having spent half of my spring semester designing a hypothetical art gallery next door, I had spent a lot of time in the Home Slice parking lot, but not Home Slice itself. I went with two other friends and it was really, really busy. The decor was not what I was expecting. Modern, kind of funky, the interior was darker than I thought it would be. I particularly liked the space with the booths near the back. I saw a curtain, so I think that this back space can be used for private parties, but I can't be sure. Because the restaurant is small, the tables and chairs are really crammed in there, so we were seated in this awkward intersection of the kitchen, the wait staff station, and the restrooms. Actually, when I went to the restroom to wash my hands, I could hear my friends' conversations, and they said the same thing when they went to the restroom. The food itself was good. We ordered a whole white clam pizza after reading a review that praised it. It was different, and I appreciate that. We also ordered an Insalata Caprese, which was very good, better than the pizza, in my opinion. I was impressed by the fresh mozzarella. The service was also good. With a somewhat small table, a whole pizza, and three people, we accidentally knocked over one of our waters and, despite how busy it was, the staff was very kind and efficient with dealing with the mess. Homeslice has been pretty hit or miss for me over the past few years that they've been hooking me up with slices... I've had my best experiences when I've sat down to eat there. Their pizza is not always the most consistent; there have been times when they've over/under cooked the pie but overall I'd say I've been pretty pleased with the quality. They also make yummy sammiches and calzones the size of your face! No lie. I've had some great service at the bar. Excellent wine recommendations and friendly banter. Wish I could remember her name! Now for the dark side... outside window service. I went for lunch one Monday afternoon and was shocked that there wasn't a line formed down the block. I figured it was my lucky day; WRONG. The rude girl at the counter completely ignored me standing there waiting patiently to order because she was busy chatting with a customer inside. My one slice of pepperoni took over 15 minutes. Seriously?? The slices are just sitting there waiting for their inevitable and brief trip to the oven. The outside service seems like a quick and convenient way to get your pizza fix but in reality it is just a frustratingly slow and frequently unorganized option. The 30-45 minute wait just might be worth it to sit and enjoy your pizza; especially since it's likely that you'd be waiting just as long for the window service on a busy night. read more

The last time I was here my friend and I left with buttons popping on our pants because we were simply incapable of leaving any pizza left on the plate - it was that delish! I highly recommend the eggplant, ricotta, sausage pizza - if you can save some for the next day it gets even better! Wow, this is one of those places in Austin my wife and I never get tired of. I've gotten to know a lot of the staff over the past couple years and always feel like they recognize me when we stop by to put our name in for a table. Jess- one of the hostesses and managers is always very friendly. Our favorite server is Trey and we met him during one of our first visits when we moved to Austin back in March of 2009. We always ask for his section when he is working. Such a nice guy and he is great at his job. -My wife is very picky about her diet coke and making sure it's from a fountain machine (and not the squirt gun!) and we also like our pies cooked more on the lighter side which make for floppier slices. They gave us a hard time at first when we would always request this but now they know that's just how we like it :) We usually always start with the Greek Salad (love the Greek!) and garlic knots and get a large pepperoni pie. Cheesecake is also really good for desert! BE SURE TO ASK YOUR SERVER ABOUT THE THEME OF THE MONTH! -I have sung in front of the entire restaurant, sung a Broadway tune to my server (Phantom of the Opera), performed air guitar in front of the restaurant, and taken another table's order all for 10% off my bill. The theme varies every month. Currently (April 2011) the theme is "Truth or Dare" where you can get 10% off your entire bill. Don't be a wussy and take a truth! Other really good servers that we love are Michael, Alex, Gabe, Amanda, (Mark -just recently left to open his own Cajun style food joint), and Kelly. Everyone is great there but those particular folk definitely stand out!!! What's up homeslice? This place, that's what! Well, not really. They did book an amazing line up for SXSW and had a superb set up for seeing those bands. However, they had a poor set up for ordering and serving up the pizza. They quit selling by the slice from 5pm-9pm for some reason, so you'd have to sit inside, but there's a long wait for that and then you have to wait for your pizza to come. The wait there is outrageous- it took 10 min to get seated (not bad) 10 min to get our drink order in (no-one even stopped by to say hi until then) another 5 to actually get our water and soda and then about another 30 to get our pizza. I wasn't really bugged by the wait for the pizza seeing as it is all prepared there, just the lack of caring from the wait staff. Had for the first time last night after hearing many good things about this place. Went with a couple of friends and first thing I noticed when I walked inside was that it smelled delicious. The atmosphere is very chill and laid back as well. We decided to order a large pizza to split between 3 guys and chose the pizza with sausage, red bell peppers, and ricotta cheese. We sat down in a stool area overlooking the kitchen and watched the pizza makers freshly make pizzas along with making our pizza. Waited about 20 minutes for the pizza to finish making and baking. It was hot and fresh out of the oven and I took my first bite and man was this some good pizza, probably one of the best pizza's I've ever had. The crust wasnt thin but not too thin, and baked to a perfect amount of crispiness and softness. The toppings were very fresh and they did not skimp on putting toppings. Ate 3 of the humungous slices that they serve and was stuffed beyond imagination, but very happy at the same time.
