    Papdi Chaat
    Annie L.

Surrounded by numerous other Indian restaurants, Honest Indian is one to add to your list when looking for southern Indian slanted cuisine. Ordering delivery on a Saturday evening from DoorDash was a breeze and took about 45min to arrive. I decided to try the Papdi Chaat and had to go for one of the dosas--I settled on the Spring Dosa. The Papdi Chaat was a tasty appetizer, coming with a smattering of chutneys and yogurts to customize with. Flavorful and fresh--a great starter for 2-3 people. The dosa was the standout though! More than enough for one diner portions wise. The dough was paper thin, crispy and held up well to a brief reheat in the air fryer. The filling was a deliciously complex blend of spices with just a touch of subtle heat. Excellent first impression, Honest Indian team and looking forward to my next meal!

Tried Honest with high hopes, and as much as I wanted to like this place but honestly? Tried 4 times and Pretty disappointed. The pav bhaji? Stellar. Schezwan noodles? Surprisingly solid. But the rest? Let's just say honesty hurts. Everything else felt like a letdown. The hype around this place is baffling. The chhole lacked salt and the bature doubled as gym equipment--thick and tough. Mix pakora came deep-fried in regret: oily, burnt, and basically charcoal with a crunch. And the hyped-up Bahubali sandwich? More "Bahublah"--overpriced and underwhelming. Service was fine, ambiance was decent, but nothing stood out enough to justify the buzz. If you're visiting, stick to the hits and skip the heartbreaks. Otherwise, let the hype train pass you by.

Food here is always great, especially when you need to eat vegetarian options. The restaurant is casual and the employees are nice and considerate.

I came here on a Saturday afternoon and I ordered the chilly baby corn and the chilly garlic fried rice. The food had a lot of flavor. The chilly garlic rice wasn't quite what I was expecting but it was still very good. The corn dish was a good amount and it didn't feel overly greasy. I would def. come back and try more options. It was very busy, so I did have to wait about 20 minutes for my food, but it was worth it.

My experience at Honest Indian Restaurant in Maryland fell short of my expectations, especially given my positive dining experience at the similarly named establishment in New Jersey. The Special Pav Bhaji was bland and lacked flavor. The accompanying buns were not heated properly, resulting in a semi-burnt inner crust and a hard center. The Bhel Chat was unremarkable, failing to impress with its average flavors. It's a self service restaurant so nothing worth mentioning about the service. On a side note, restaurant can get pretty loud when busy.

This is a chain which apparently started in India and is now pretty widespread in the U.S., as this is my third Honest. However, the others were more traditional sit-down restaurants, while this one was an order at the counter kind of place, which was chaotic right up until it closed. The large families that congregate here will do that to you, though to the restaurant's credit, staff were pretty efficient about clearing tables and getting us our food. What arrived was credibly rendered food with an enormous array of vegetarian choices. My chole with puri was large and perfectly portioned; my fried bread ran out just as the last bite of chickpeas disappeared, and I did appreciate the onion and pickle accompaniment. I was stuffed having had a South Indian lentil donut, with no room to even finish the accompanying sambar. Indo-Chinese soup and classic dal and rice looked appealing as well. Then again, I could order just about anything here.

Of all the Honest chains I've been to (about 7-8 so far) this is my favorite location! Clean, nicely decorated and boy they bring ahmedabad flavors into your plates right away! The Punjabi thaali is HUGE- make sure 2 people are sharing. By far the largest sized Naan/roti comes here. Chaat was extraordinary, Papdi Chaat is massive serving of Papdis which stayed crisp till the end coated in gujarati phenomenal chutneys. Pav Bhaji is superb- authentic goodness in your mouth and the sweet Paan is a delicious finish. Staff is kind, courteous and very helping. Bathrooms were very clean and we were the first customers of the dine-in AM when they had opened. Will return every time we see in Baltimore!

    Punjabi Thali

I've been to Honest a few times now, and honestly, the service is always slow. We ordered the Punjabi Thali, which was decent and arrived within 15-20 minutes. We also got the Masala Dosa, which was pretty good, though the sambar dal was bit too spicy. However, we also ordered Bhaji Pav, and it took nearly 45-50 minutes to arrive. We had to repeatedly check on it, and every time we were told, "5 more minutes." It felt like they had completely forgotten about our order. This isn't a one-off experience--most of the times I've visited, either part of my order is missed or significantly delayed. The restaurant was packed, servers were constantly rushing around, which was making it hard to get their attention. On top of that, they add a 15% service charge to every table, whether or not the service deserves it. The food is good, but the service just doesn't measure up. The service really needs serious improvement.

Menu showing Dosas that Honest is not willing to take orders on over the weekends and asking me to come on weekdays!

Changing my review to a 3 star, since the restaurant tried addressing the concerns in a cordial manner. Provided some suggestions on what they can do to improve availability of food advertised on menu. It was frustrating to hear a no every time I visit during weekends for a simple Dosa. May be they should just place a note at the counter and on the site that no dosas would be served during peak times and that will solve the issue.

    Hyderabadi biryani
    Madhurima D.

Was craving a rose falooda and searched on Yelp. This place showed up, it is a bit far away to order delivery. So drove up there. Place was clean and staff were helpful. It was bustling with people. Ordered falooda, Hyderabadi biryani and dahi poori. Falooda satisfied my cravings even though it was all mixed up. Dahi poori was good too. But the biryani peeved me. This is a vegetarian restaurant, so the biryani was vegetarian. It was green in color with lots of broccoli. It was flavorful with mint and coconut. I am sure somewhere in Hyderabad, India they make this biryani. But when I think of Hyderabadi biryani, this had no resemblance to it whatsoever. So, I was greatly disappointed. They should seriously consider changing the name to prevent other customers from getting disappointed.

It is certainly the best restaurant in Catonsville, and you won't have to pay $50 for one dish (like you would at say Beaumont). We have like 10 favorite things on the menu--I just tried 2 new dishes last night--and now maybe that number is up to 12. You basically can't have a bad order, the food is absolutely delicious. If you like spicy food and ask for spicy, they will actually make it spicy which is SO nice. (Usually when I ask for spicy and emphasize SPICY anywhere I go, I get a mega mellow spiced dish and it's hugely disappointing). My top orders are chicken xacuti, kerala fish curry, kashmiri naan, mixed spicy pickles, and malai kofta. Oh, and kheer (so good). I love it all. Not only is the food phenomenal, the ambiance and service is top notch. The dining room is absolutely gorgeous and spotless. The front of house staff wears button up shirts and dress pants. There are fresh flowers (and if I remember correctly, candles) on the tables. There are beautiful murals painted on the walls. It's absolutely romantic. And! Cherry on top: it's BYO, so you can bring your own bottle of wine. Absolutely a gem on Frederick Rd.

I've seen this spot when driving in Catonsville and have been meaning to test it out. I ordered some veggie samosas and saag paneer (spinach sauce with cheese chunks). The samosas were very good, a little spicy, and came with a green and brown sauce. The saag paneer wasn't my favorite, it was very concentrated and the spinach flavor was incredibly overwhelming. It was bitter and I had to stop eating it. When I ate the second portion, I added some heavy cream to lighten up the flavor and it was a little bit better, but I've had better saag paneer. I would try this spot again, especially since it's so close.

I just wish there was a bit more kadhi or gravy to go with the rice--to help balance out the carb load (I know, it's a lot to ask!). We also tried the dhokla, which was excellent--light, fluffy, and flavorful. Will definitely order that again. When I picked up the order and started eating it, it was extremely spicy to the point where I could visibly see all the spice in it. It was completely inedible for me. I called the restaurant politely just to let them know there may have been a mistake because I know for a fact I ordered mild. I even double checked while placing the order because this is something I always order the same way. Instead of trying to help, the guy on the phone kept insisting that I ordered spicy. That made absolutely no sense because why would I intentionally order food I literally cannot eat? I have no tolerance for spice at all. What made it worse was how dismissive and rude the conversation became. He kept saying things like "I heard you correctly" and blamed it on two orders coming in at the same time. Instead of taking accountability for a simple mistake, he kept trying to argue with me and basically imply I was lying about my own order. I even went back to the restaurant to explain the situation in person, and he still kept insisting that I had ordered the biryani spicy. At that point I was so frustrated that I just threw the food away in the trash right in front of them and left because there was clearly no effort being made to resolve the issue. The frustrating part is this is not even the first issue I've had here. Another time they completely gave me the wrong order but I didn't make a big deal about it because mistakes happen. This time was different because of how poorly the situation was handled and how defensive the employee became instead of trying to resolve it professionally. I've been ordering from here for a while, but after this experience and the customer service I received, I definitely will not be returning.
