Hey SoCal yelpers, what're you smoking? And can I partake? When I saw the nearly 5 star rating for Hong Kong Express I grew excited. When I realized where they were located (strip mall anchored by a Dollar Store) I grew skeptical. When I returned home with armloads of food (under $28 total, served 4 with leftovers) and began eating I understood the sentiments expressed in one yelp tip for the place: "If you want quantity over quality...". A mountainous combo plate with rice, Chow Mein, Orange Chicken, and Broccoli Beef was less than $6.30. The Orange Chicken was tasty in a totally disgusting way (as Orange Chicken often is). The Chow Mein was a decent accompaniment. We opted for white rice over fried and had no complaints there, but at the Broccoli Beef the whole equation started to fall apart; this beef is not good. Two dishes I had "made to order": Mongolian Beef and a special Chow Mein which included chicken, beef, and shrimp. The quality of beef used in the former - and in the Broccoli Beef and Chow Mein - is best described as "grey", chewy and neither tasty or appetizing. The protein included in the special Chow Mein was overwhelming, with pieces cut too large and again, that meat. It's accurate to say I ate the noodles and avoided the proteins, making the need to order the Chow Mein as a special dish completely unnecessary. While waiting briefly for my order a fellow diner began chatting me up. Obviously a regular, he couldn't even vouch for the quality of what was on offer. Words like "better than it used to be" and "the shrimp is sometimes old" had me about ready to run. If you care only about quantity here's my tip: order from the already prepared foods that sit in the steam table in front of you. You can see what you're getting before purchasing and you'll get a whole lot of it. With certainty that I'd not be consuming these leftovers later, I deposited all remaining evidence of this meal directly in the garbage. If all you care about is quantity and price, you've found Mecca. If you care about more than that, I'd drive on by; I'm no fan of the Panda chain but I think I'd prefer it to this. Nearly 5 stars? Customer Service is welcoming!! Came here to place an order for party size chow mein for pick up the next day. While we were there my friend placed an order for dinner. And the portions were GINORMOUS!!!!! The plate was over flowing and I thought times were tough!!! No complaints though!!! Other reviews are not lying, they give you huge portions. I literally had lunch and dinner with just a 2 item combo. Definitely a great bang for your buck, for greasy Chinese food. I ordered the Orange Chicken and Beef with broccoli; it was good, but greasy. I couldn't order the Chow-mein or Fried rice, because the other 2 items I had was rich in sauce and grease, so I had to compensate with white rice. It was a guilty pleasure, to eat such good Chinese food. You can tel by how it taste that MSG wasn't used, but still had a lot of grease. I'm definitely coming back if I have that craving to eat Chinese food. Definitely better then Panda and way bigger portions. Honestly I'd give it more like 3.5 stars, but I think it's just not the best place for vegetarian food. The meat dishes looked fantastic and the portions were definitely insane. I had the spicy tofu and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't amazing. It was a good level of spice, but just way saucier than I wanted. For $16.50 you can feed a village with the massive portion size they give you. Quantity aside, this is the first "Chinese" fast food place that I've visited that isn't heavy handed with the msg. We've been in search for a good "fast food" Chinese place for a while. We have had Hong Kong express a couple times now and it hits the spot. The portions are huge so my husband and I always share a plate but everything is really good. A $1 more expensive than Panda Express for pretty much twice the amount of food was what brought me to Hong Kong Express (and insane photos of the overloaded boxes of course). You can order entrees or sides by themselves or you can order 1-3 combos! The combos are pretty much chow mein/fried rice with 1, 2 or 3 entree items for ~$7-$10. I did the 2 combo this time and got chow mein, orange chicken, and BBQ pork! In terms of quality, this is definitely not your gourmet Chinese food or anything but if you're looking for some simple Chinese takeout like Panda's, this place does it and I think is worth it for the insane amount of food you get for decent quality. My only complaint would be that some of the meat tasted pretty hard and kind of difficult to chew (esp the BBQ pork when I came) so that dinged a star for me. But I loooove Chinese takeout and for the price and quantity, I would definitely come back here. It is totally doable to split one box with someone else and still be satiated. read more
