HKR is AOK and then some. My one and I came here quite hangry after antiquing or more specifically "fleaing" in the area. This is a teenie place and quite cozy with booths and a bar area up front. Staff was friendly from the get-go. American staff here and a toned-down but prevalent Oriental decor with the de rigueur Oriental bric-a-brac kitsch. It's dark and old school here. I like that. Morgan was our waitress, and she was awesome, and we kicked things off with a Volcano Bowl that was Mai Tai. She kindly hipped us to the fact that you can get any drink and convert it to a Volcano. It was delish and copious and had the ever-fun mile-long party straws. It's "the usual" on the menu: Moo Goos, Moo Shoes, Subgums, Kao Pangs and the like. The cocktail menu is excellent with the usual and then some. My interest was immediately piqued when I spotted the "Scooby Snack Tiki Bowl" on the drink menu. Interesting... We decided to be rather pedestrian and simply go for the PuPu Pladder for Two. We worked on the Volcano Bowl for a bit and then our Pladder appeared with a smile from Morgan. It was gigantor AF being fully loaded with 'Goons, Shrimps, WIngz, Beef Teriyaki, Fingers, BSRs, and EggRolls. It's all here, folks! Most places try to rake in extra bucks by having various-option Pladders that include only a few of these items thusly "making" you pay extra if you want Shrimps or 'Goons or whatever. Kudos to HKR for making their Pladders "all inclusive" and nondiscriminatory. This Pladder was yumski as hell. The BT was the star with a tender chew and umami. We also got House Fried Rice which was very good. Everything was freshly cooked and piping hot and greasy in the best way. I pigged out to the max and I enjoyed mixing the Yum-Yum Sauce and Goo-Goo Sauce and Hot Mustard with my foodstuffs to create spontaneous ad hoc mash-ups. Upon finishing the Volcano I ordered the Scooby Snack Tiki Bowl. This was delish with Banana Liqueur and stuff and awesome. Prices are very reasonable here and portions are gigantor. The service is great and the vibe is wicked pissah. I like that. Needless to say, my one and I were on Cloud 9 and tickled pink with our experience here. Highly recommended for all Chinese/American old-school YELPers!

    Mmm just want I wanted.

Hong Kong Restaurant was an unexpected surprise on a frigid visit to the New Bedford area recently. It's unassuming from the outside, and located in a small strip mall with a very narrow parking lot (especially with the awfully plowed snow at this time). The decor inside is actually a lot nicer than you would expect. I really like the light fixtures, and I love the Asian art embedded in the tables. We were told the Peking hot and sour soup is "sweeter" than most hot and sour soups, so we decided to pass on that. We elected the wonton soup instead. It was actually quite good, although I didn't care of the piece of sliced pork in the soup. It was just a little awkward to eat. We enjoyed the shrimp spring rolls, but thought the vegetable lo mein was just alright. It included HUGE chunks of vegetables that were also a bit awkward to eat. I would have preferred smaller pieces, and perhaps a larger variety than mainly snow peas, bok choy, onions, and water chestnuts. Overall, I was satisfied by my meal and Hong Kong Restaurant, but not overly impressed in any way.

Ordered: house fried rice, veggie fried rice, sesame chicken, orange chicken, general tso fried tofu, and green beans. Their house fried rice was filled with bbq pork, shrimp, and chicken! Menu has all the usual Moos Goos and Moo Shoes and Kow Pangs, etc. My Hot n' Sour Soup was great. Big-ass portions and drinks are strong and yummy. Drinks are cheap AF and taste awesome and they have American Classics like Jager Bombs and Slammers and Gin Martinis and Tokyo Blasters, etc. As anyone who knows Chinese American the Chow Mein Sammie was invented here in New Bedford/Fall River area. And they got 'em here so they are legit. All phood was scrump AF and this place is a blast to hang out in. Cheap prices and awesome cocktails of all types and great phood and huge portions are what Jade Garden is all about! Peep it out !!! HOT TIP: Chinese American phood pairs great with American Cocktails like Manhattans and Rusty Nails, etc. I usually warm up with a couple Tiki Drinks and then ease into the Rob Roys and Gin Martinis, etc., as the meal progresses. Give it a shot.

Wah May has been slinging chow mein and other old school Chinese goodies since 1961 from what looks…read morelike a former residence. Surprisingly, no bar. Unsurprisingly, plenty of combination plates. Chow Mein Sandwich: They have several choices for this regional specialty, which can also be had as a chop suey sandwich. Proteins include chicken, beef, mushroom, pork strip, and even shrimp or scallop. I went with chicken. What arrived was a humongous assemblage of thick-cut celery, tender chicken strips, and onions, with crunchy flat noodles interspersed and a thin, dark brown gravy (neither sweet nor salty) underneath. The bun was basically a garnish, so this demanded fork and knife eating. I think of it as a crunchier Chinese version of a hot turkey sandwich, with the bun the least important element but what makes it unique. As chow mein, good flavor and good texture, coming in well above average to near-elite. Shrimp and Lobster Sauce (on a combo): Five shrimp, ever so slightly overdone but serviceable, buried in a faintly sweet sauce with a more potent dark black bean base, with a few swirls of egg white. Scallions on top were more than a garnish, providing a savory counterpoint to the sweetness. Well above average. Egg Roll (on the combo): I have to admit, there are times I'm not fully certain on whether an egg roll filling is celery, cabbage, or a mix. This was NOT one of those times. The celery brigade can rejoice, as this one goes well past "celery forward" and onto "celery in your face," and I'm talking more in your face than an Elaine Benes Christmas card. Dark green, thick chunks, all with some crunch, and fully loaded. Baby shrimp and pork can also be found lurking, but this is all about the dominant celery. The wrapper brought a bit of greasiness (though within tolerance) but a strong, pleasant flavor as well. This unique egg roll bordering on subgum-in-a-shell is an absolute must-try, and I liked it to an extent, but wouldn't want it regularly. It's an acquired taste, so it's tough to score: overall, probably average, but a really fascinating average. Pork Fried Rice: A little dry in spots but dark of color with flavor to match and an acceptable amount of pork, onion, and bean sprouts. Above average. Very enjoyable meal, good food, different food, and a place I'm eager to revisit. Fairhaven is just over the bridge from New Bedford and boasts some stunning works of architecture in its town hall, Millicent Library, and Unitarian Memorial Church, all right around the corner from Wah May and not to be missed if you're into beautiful historical buildings.
