The menu selection offers something for everyone and the drinks are well made. My first visit to Hoof's last night. We had two couples. We really like Italian food, and Hoof's did not disappoint. We were able to sit outside last night. Cute tables on sidewalk out front with yellow metal chairs. Last night was really busy because of the activities going on in westerly last night. We had bruschetta, a nice burrata and heirloom tomato salad for apps. Entrees included rigatoni with chicken, veal Marsala, scallops and Seafood fra diavolo (not too spicy - just right). As you walk in to this bustling spot, you're immediately greeted and can spot the owner walking around making sure everyone is delighted. The service is immaculate. All at once you're presented with the most perfect bread rolls and delicious homemade roasted red pepper hummus that will make you want to lick the plate. Just when you think they exceeded your expectations, a plate of beautiful bruschetta is served HOT with a taste that made me roll my eyes in the back of my head. I could've engorged a whole other plate. My scallops and risotto was an experience I won't forget, with each bite I took I was entranced by the combination of texture of my creamy risotto and these little clovers kissing my lips. It was a beautiful jungle with mountains of scallops that were so tender I didn't need a knife. Crispy on the top and just the right amount of juicy in the center, little pillows of heaven. Already full, we couldn't resist the most giant piece of moist carrot cake and vanilla ice cream. The food at hoof's was immaculate, but the real treat was being waited on like a king and queen. Constantly on top of bringing another drink, asking how the food is, and giving out terms of endearment such as "my good man" and "lovely". As a local, I am so happy that we finally have a go-to classic Italian restaurant. Tony D's in New London is a local institution, and the owners decided to come over to Pawcatuck/Stonington. All the reviews here are accurate and this is authentic Italian. It tastes just like something I would expect out of my grandmothers kitchen. That's why it's my 8th 5 star review. We give 5 stars due to the service and how the owner gave our 3 year old ice cream for dinner. We really like this area so we will be back here for sure. Disappointing. Pleasant but clumsy service: drinks ordered, then appetizers, long wait, appetizers arrive, still no drinks. Menu uninspired, takes on classic Italian fare bizarrely and unnecessarily adulterated, resulting in neither a new take nor simply nailing the basics. Broccoli rabe not sufficiently prepped, thick, tough stalks inedible and needing to be extracted--inedible. Veal Marsala dumped on top of stuck-together fettuccine, and the whole mess disguised with sauce. However: one highlight in all honesty was the mussels appetizer, simply prepared in a delicately picante wine sauce. Think twice before choosing to dine here and perhaps stick to appetizers. read more

We were excited to try this spot, as it was recommended by the dealership from where we had just purchased a new car. When you walk in, the ambiance is that of a cool New York City Bistro. Darkly lit, bar off to the side of the dining room, booths along the window, where you can watch people passing by with their dogs and traffic going by. There's a large mural on the wall of what looks like racing horses taking off just after the starting line. You can hear rat pack music coming from the open kitchen. They offer a decent wine list and various cocktails. I ordered a vodka martini with bleu cheese stuffed olives...olives were tiny, cocktail was fine. For an appetizer, my partner ordered the calamari, served with peppers and marinara. It was fine. Nothing spectacular, but it was not bad at all. For main course, I had the surf n turf...it was a medley of filet mignon and seared scallops with mushrooms and sundried tomatoes over a bed of (my fave)pappardelle pasta. This dish was very good. He, on the other hand, ordered veal Parmesan with a side order of broccoli rabe. The rabe, was awful...bitter, bland and watery. The veal parm takes the cake though. I understand pounding veal(or any meat) for tenderness, but this veal was as thin as a piece of meat sliced in the deli. It was simply pathetic. The breading was four times bigger than the thinly (sliced)pounded piece of veal. It was a complete embarrassment to list that on the menu for $26.00. The manager came over, immediately saw how thin the veal was and offered to replace it with another cut...until he realized that there was nothing bigger than that. Then he proceeded to BRING BACK the plate of breading scraps and old pasta to him and explained how ALL of the veal was pounded out this afternoon. We told him we didn't want the rabe or even the old plate of pasta and scraps of (sliced) veal. Then he had the audacity to send the server over to offer us a dessert on the house. We politely declined. Do you think he even considered wiping the veal from the check, or even offering a percentage off? The answer is a RESOUNDING, "No!" Needless to say, we will never be back. read more

This is a hidden gem. On the southern border of Connecticut and Rhode Island this Italian restaurant has great food and atmosphere. Last night was my first time dining at Hoofs. Having no idea what I would find behind those big glass windows I was more than pleasantly surprised with the sleek decor and perfectly lit lights. We were greeted by everyone and shown to a lovely table. The service and professionalism by the the entire staff and our wonderful server were the very best. Now the food, I always try a restaurants meatballs and Hoofs were amazing, all the right seasonings, moist, generously sized in a lovely sauce with fresh ricotta. My arugula salad was nice and peppery as fresh, good arugula should be. My friends pappardelle bolognese was different from what I typically have, a nice change... so thankful he let me try it. We have been to Hoofs often and we are never disappointed! From the moment Patrick greets us at the door to the time we finish dessert it is a delight to be dinning at Hoofs. The atmosphere is vibrant and energetic. The servers are personable and helpful. They serve wonderful cocktails to start you off. For meals, wife loves the Hoofs pasta, while my fav is pork chop Calabrese, but don't pass on the veal chop if it's a special. We have never had a bad meal and look forward to our next trip! read more

Meatballs appetizer was very good! However, the rigatoni a la vodka was very disappointing...underdone with underwhelming sauce and the chicken Francese was served with I shoot you not instant mashed potatoes. Not okay for the money spent on an entree. If you are looking for atmosphere but so so food fine. If you are looking for good Italian food in westerly go to vetranos or casa de la Luce. read more

The staff were incredibly nice, never rushed but very attentive.The salads were the best I have had in the area, fresh and perfectly seasoned. My entree was delicious and plentiful. Been here many times. Never disappointed. Last nite had a seafood risotto that was unique and delicious with lots of fresh fish and shell fish. The service as always was fantastic. The family that owns Hoof's makes everyone feel like family, in a good way. There is no need that they won't fill if possible. I have been told when asking about a special that I was afraid was going to time out, "Don't worry just ask for it and we'll make it for you anytime." This place is relatively new and there was a big noise problem for the longest time. We would always request the quietest table to alleviate that problem and always enjoyed our meal. Now they have installed baffles in the ceiling and it helps a lot. If you are in the area you should try Hoof's. read more

Service was excellent! Food was not very well executed. My husband's steak order was not only the wrong entree but doused in a heavy sauce. My Chicken Oscar came in a bowl over mashed potatoes with a runny sauce that mixed with the potatoes to make a soupy mess. The seafood tasted frozen and not fresh. The waiter immediately came over to ask if everything was ok. I sent my plate back while my husband just ate his fatty meat. My plate came back, same food just more mashed potatoes and less runny sauce on a different type of plate. Same awful food just presented differently. An owner came over to hear my complaints and offered a dessert on the house which we politely refused. Despite that, dessert came anyway. Will not go back. read more

Quality of food top notch. Pork chop was huge and delicious with amazing potatoes as side. Custom made homemade paparadelle with house made marinara was small portion in comparison with other 3 dinners but delicious. Clams on linguine was perfect. The menu is definitely solid here but their service doesn't match the quality of the food. Went for an anniversary dinner and had a 7pm reservation. Arrived at 6:58 and the place was packed and having a reservation was essentially meaningless. They didn't have a table ready and just said "it would be a few minutes". I went to the bar where there was an open space and made eye contact with the bartender to order a couple drinks while we waited. He looked dead at me, gave a head motion like "I can't take your drink order right now" and walked away to clean some glasses and do other things. No problem. I waited there for a few minutes. Nothing. Never came back for a drink order. Meanwhile, Some other people were seated (no problem, they could have had a reservation too) and then after about 15 minutes a couple people left a very small high top type table near the bar and that's where they stuck us. We were there for drinks, apps, and dinner. The little table barely could hold everything without plates and silverware almost falling off. We ordered 2 apps- the Lobster Nachos (excellent) and mussels (very good). Those 2 apps and drinks and waters barely fit on the table. When you make a reservation for dinner, is it too much to ask to be seated at a nice table in the restaurant and not right near the door at a little bar high top? For dinner I saw they had a rigatoni vodka on the menu and they also had a veal parm. I asked if I could have the rigatoni vodka with a piece of veal parm also with vodka sauce on it instead of marinara. The server answered "absolutely no problem". Her response made it sound like it was something they do all the time. Well my dinner arrived and it was Veal parm with marinara, over linguini with vodka sauce. No rigatoni vodka anywhere in sight. I didn't say anything because I didn't want my wife eating her meal alone while mine was being corrected. So I just ate it the way it came. You'd hope the server would have noticed and said "that's not what you ordered" but that wasn't happening. Last thing that goes to the overall "you should be happy we allow you to eat here" vibe this place gives. I ordered a vodka drink that I've ordered a hundred times at a hundred other bars. It comes in a rocks glass. Always filled with ice and filled to the top with beverage. The same drink here showed up in a glass that was LITERALLY half full. It was so strange. I want to say that the food here is legit. It really was very good food. But they need to button up the quality of their service in a big way. read more
