Grilled Fish of the Day Plate Fish of the day was sole

Hook Fish is an excellent fresh seafood spot. Good fish, but small portions (and at about $18+ for any entree m with fish) and average at best sides. In addition, very high chance of lines and minimal seating options at the place. Overall: 4.0/5 Service was quick and efficient. Food was out fast, but our group did not order any fried food, which I imagine would add to the wait time. Managed to snag a table but that also may be a bit of trouble depending on the time. In addition, no indoor seating so make sure to go on a nice day or be prepared to eat in typical sf Oceanside weather. I ordered the grilled fish of the day plate, which happened to be sole. Had a nice light flavor, which I found quite tasty. The rice was a little hard, and the beans lacked flavor. I also thought pico de gallo was a bit bland as well. However the pickled slaw was excellent. Crunchy, with a nice acidity that brightened everything up. Aoli was also pretty good. The fish tacos looked good but at $9 a taco with no sides, it was a little hard for me to justify the price even with high quality fish.

Considering how remote it felt in the Outer Sunset, I was surprised how packed this seafood spot was on a weekday afternoon. But then what does a SoMa guy like me know about the Wild West of this city? I had heard about this place over the years but only recently tried it for the first time. Even though it sits in the middle of a commercial block in a heavily residential neighborhood, I got the impression they like to think they're on Fisherman's Wharf. That's because they operate more like a takeout window with all the seating outside in a parklet set up as a weatherworn, wooden pier. The menu presented fresh fish in a number of ways: burritos, tacos, lunch plates, sandwiches, salads, burgers, and even fish & chips. The grilled fish of the day was rockfish, so I ordered the $20 Grilled Fish of the Day Salad. It was a hearty serving made up of three large, flaky fillets on a bed of mixed greens. It came with shaved vegetables, everything seed clusters, a heavy dousing of vinaigrette, and a little cup of crema for good measure. The only problem was where to eat it since the pier seats were all taken. I thought I could share one of the sidewalk tables, but a nasty German tourist shooed me away. I waited for another table to open up and finally got to eat. It turned out to be pretty satisfying. Next time I'll know to order it to go, so I can sit on the beach.. FOOD - 4 stars...the grilled fish was definitely fresh and plentiful AMBIANCE - 3 stars...like a fishing pier...seating needs to be rethought for solitary diners SERVICE - 3.5 stars...no problem with the staff...it's the selfish tourists that will get on your nerves TOTAL - 4 stars...worthwhile for the fresh fish RELATED - Exploring the Sunset? Came by around 11:30am on a Saturday and there was only a short line to order. Seating was a bit limited on the outdoor patio due to big crowd but we got lucky with a table for 4. We shared two orders of the 3 piece fish and chips, grilled fish tacos, and grilled fish burrito. Fish and chips were fantastic. Hot, crispy, flaky. Fries were pretty good too. Tartar sauce was creamy and solid. Fish tacos were good too. Grilled fish burrito wasn't bad but more on the bland side. I'd say fish and chips were 5/5 but tacos and burrito were 4/5. I would try their poke burrito next time. Definitely a busy spot so plan accordingly. Took about 20 mins for food to be ready.

Came over for a late lunch on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30 pm and the line to order was short. I looked over the menus and ordered before trying to find seating in their outdoor area but it was pretty limited so we found space around the planters. We picked up our items around a 30 minute wait later. Fried Fish Tacos - For two tacos, the size and the amount of fillings were very good. It came with fried fish, avocado, salsa, veggies and a spicy aioli sauce. It is cool that they use the fish they have for the day and the tacos were very refreshing with the lightly battered fish and fresh vegetables. A lot of people have mentioned this place as a must go for fresh fish and chips related dishes and I understand the hype about it after trying it. I would definitely go back again and try to avoid the lines by going earlier or ordering pickup.

It has been years since I first ate at Hook Fish, so I was stoked to finally revisit today. We ordered the fish and chips alongside the burrito with the grilled fish of the day (Rockfish). The fish and chips were solid. The batter was crispy, and the fish was flaky --what more can you ask for? The thick-cut chips were also seasoned well. Now, the fish burrito is not your typical Mission District burrito, nor is it a classic San Diego-style fish burrito. It feels unique to Hook Fish and the Sunset. It's incredibly hearty, packed with a generous helping of slaw, beans, and rice. While it has plenty of flavor on its own, it pairs beautifully with their house habanero carrot hot sauce! My only gripe is that the rockfish plays more of a supporting role rather than being the main star of the burrito show. This place has gotten wildly popular over the years, so service can vary depending on the crowds. Outdoor seating is a bit limited, but I highly recommend dining here if you can grab a spot. Eating fresh seafood with Ocean Beach just blocks away is such a vibe! Plus, there's a cute coffee and bookstore right across the street to help you combat the inevitable food coma afterward.

Great food option for a picnic at the park or the beach! Be prepared to wait- we waited an hour for take out on a Sunday afternoon. Baja burrito- hefty burrito with good quality ingredients. Unfortunately the fried fish doesn't remain crispy in the burrito, and it was a bit bland. Definitely need to eat with the hot sauce! Fish and chips- crispy and flaky white fish. We also love the seasoning on their fries! Their tartar sauce is great too.

I was super excited to try Hook Fish and finally got the chance! We came by for Saturday lunch and luckily came early enough at opening to avoid a line and grabbed a seat on the patio. There's no indoor seating but there is an outdoor parket with some tables. I opted for the grilled fish of the day plate which was rockfish and it was super fresh and delicious! Loved the flaky, tender rockfish that was grilled to perfection and it paired well with rice, black beans, pico and a slaw. The spicy aioli gave it a nice creamy touch but it was the carrot habanero sauce on the table that really boosted the flavor and we all loved their house-made hot sauce! I also tried my friend's fish burrito which was great as well. It's essentially the same components on the plate, just wrapped in a house-made tortilla. Such a great spot for lunch and it would be just perfect on a sunny Californian day.

Fish and chips are delish! Their guacamole and chips are tasty too for an appetizer that's on so many menus. I was surprised to see it on their menu, but it was fresh and yummy and so were the chips. It's a popular spot, and seating is limited so you need to be willing to pull-up a curb or find a spot to stand to enjoy your meal. Takeout is an option but the fish and chips would be best enjoyed right as they come out. There is not much interaction with staff except to order your food and drinks. Kitchen staff is busy pumpin' out orders.

So happy there is a hook fish in the city. Fish burritos are a favorite and nice to have the kids option so I can also have some of their top-tier chips. Perfect thickness and crunch. So many amazing menu options and cute outdoor seating - can't go wrong here!

Hook Fish is a great spot to grab takeout before heading to Ocean Beach for a picnic by the sunset. We ordered the poke burrito and fish & chips. The poke burrito was fresh and packed with quality ingredients. Be sure to ask for sauces on the side. They have a wide assortment to choose from. The fish & chips were fried perfectly with a light, crispy batter. The fish was fresh and flaky, and the portions were generous. The food quality is consistently good, and the casual beachside vibe makes it a great option. The only thing is that it can get quite busy and finding seating can be a challenge, but if you're taking your food down to Ocean Beach anyway, it's no problem.

A hidden restaurant in the middle of a residential neighborhood! This should have been a sign! The picture of my fried rock fish sandwich doesn't do it justice. The tartar sauce, the tang of the peppers, the perfectly fried fish and the butter grilled buns made for the best fish sandwich EVER! There were 3-4 pieces of fish on the sandwich. I had to eat it with a fork! There was about a 30 minute wait for the food once we ordered (worth it). Outdoor seating is very limited. Highly recommended!

Hidden gem near the beach and such a great spot for a quality seafood meal, whether you want takeout or to eat there. It is in a convenient beach area location with nearby street parking, although the limit is only one hour. The ordering process is very simple. You walk in, place your order at the counter on the left, and then wait to be called when your food is ready for pickup. Water is also available right next to the pickup area. It is an easy and straightforward setup that makes the whole experience feel casual and stress-free. There is outdoor seating only and no indoor seating, so keep in mind that it can get a little breezy because of the beach weather. The menu offers a great variety of fish dishes, including burritos, plates, tacos, fish and chips, and more. We both ordered plates, and even though the portions looked small at first, they were actually very filling and kept us full for the rest of the day. I also really appreciated that the sauces came on the side. For the poke, tuna is the only fish option, but it was delicious and worked perfectly. We also ordered a side salad for $7 to add some fiber, and surprisingly, it was one of the best things we had. I could honestly see myself coming back just for the salad. Overall, it is a spot I would definitely return to. Next time, I would probably grab takeout and bring it to the beach or even Golden Gate Park for a picnic.

Hook Fish completely ripped us off today. AWFUL. I love their poke, so we ordered a pound for $37, then drove 20 minutes to pick it up. Chips were extra, and we added a tip. Grand total -- 47 bucks. Then we waited outside 30 minutes for our order. When we got home, we found a sad little scoop of poke in the container. We weighed it, and it was not a pound -- it was 10 ounces! Basically, a $50 snack. TOTALLY DISHONEST PLACE. BUYER BEWARE. SUPPORT OTHER RESTAURANTS. read more

Hook Fish is a great addition to the west side of the city. The line is usually insanely long on weekends so I recommend coming here during lunch maybe on a weekday. I ordered fish n chips and the crab burger! Both delicious but a bit pricey for the quantity. I wish the crab burger had a tad more crab for the cost of $19. The fish and chips were yummy especially the fries. I do want to try some of their cod next time as they were all sold out. The food does take a little time to come out too so be prepared! read more

This place is aaammaaaaaazzziiiing. The seafood is so good and fresh and the people are very nice - THE ONLY PROBLEM IS SEATING, there is literally nowhere to sit because it's so popular. I think this is an idea place to get a to go burrito and head on over to Ocean Beach and enjoy it there, which is what I wish I did instead of sharing a bench with what felt like 17 other people. read more

An excellent restaurant featuring fresh fish! I really enjoyed that the menu told where the fish was from and what vessel it came on. I had a poke burrito which was amazing. A safe haven for fresh and comforting food to-go in the COVID era. Food is always consistent and the service is always cool. The freshest and most Sustainable Fish in the city! They even write the vessel used and where it was caught on the menu each day. The Ahi Tuna Poke is phenomenal to take home over steamed rice or for lunch as a burrito. Fish Sandwich and Fish and Chips is some of the best you'll ever have. And the fish burrito plate is the SLEEPER on the menu, you'd be pressed to find a better quality fish plate anywhere else. These dudes worry about the details and that's why they've taken all of my money since discovering them. read more

Wow, what a great place to eat. Everything is fresh and clean tasting. I just wanted to state that this place hit a home run. We had the Poke + Chips (Albacore, chili tamari marinade) soooooo good, just order this for the table! trust me. My wife had the Halibut tacos and I had the Sandwich (Blackened fish) Yellow-tail special. Again, simple, very fresh, everything you want a fish plate to taste like...otherwise, here are our take aways: 1. Well trained, service oriented team working here that knows their product = fresh fish. 2. Friendly atmosphere which seems so rare these days! 3. Layout and design is simple, beachy, functional and very cool/relaxing. 4. EVERY dish we ordered was fresh tasting and cooked perfectly. The menu is linked to the catch of the day - locally and the fish is displayed on ice (like at a sushi restaurant). If you are in the area check it out...we are NOT locals but always visit here when we hike nearby and take the kids to the SF ZOO. Very casual, kid friendly with some outdoor seating. 2nd time here and the line was out the door at this tiny place. Surfers, dog lovers, all converge to try this place across from the famous 3 fish studios, where they sell their famous bear holding California print. The line moves fast, but sometimes can be a little bit of a wait for the food-- I mean it's coming from a small kitchen, and well worth the wait. The prices are a little high, but after seeing the size of the burrito ($13) we were more than pleased that we could split one between two people. My girlfriend could not stop talking about the delicious pickled veggies inside and the balance of flavors was wonderful. Walk down the block and across the road to the beach to enjoy the waves with your meal! read more

My husband and I shared a really nice meal outside in November or so, and I wanted to leave a review because of how memorable it was! We had a great meal and tasty beer, and the service was awesome, too. The fish and seafood was incredibly fresh and flavorful and we loved the chowder and tacos. We came here almost by accident and because we were in the area. If you are looking for a very laid back place with a nice california vibe and no pretentiousness, this is your spot. For me, it is the ideal place to have a light and chill Sunday lunch sitting outside under the sun. Not many places have outdoors sitting, but these guys do and they have done a really good job with the lay out. Not in any place one has the feeling of being in your own garden while sitting on the street. In any case, enough about the decoration. I had a nice crab burger, which was very moist and have an avocado sauce instead of cheese. That was a nice touch and I had to be stopped from ordering a second one. read more

I give this place actually a 3.5. So fish and chips - GOOD. Probably the best in the sunset. The fish was fresh and juicy. It wasn't overly battered. The chips were also good. The price is a little high - 3 pieces for $17, but I guess you are paying for quality and rent. Honestly if you get fish and chips from any where else, even at a restaurant, they're usually $15+. I don't think Cod Mother at the wharf is much cheaper. Also ordered the grilled fish burrito. It was disappointing. It was loaded with cabbage, which lacked flavor. Would only return for fish and chips - skip everything else. read more

This used to be my favorite place when I drove from Sacramento to Ocean Beach San Francisco. I went there with my son Jahan Saturday it was pretty crowded they said 45 minute wait. That would have been 3 50 pm. After asking 5 times but order still not ready it was almost 4:30 p.m. still nothing they kept saying it was being worked on. Finally I had enough and I said this is ridiculous you said 3:50 p.m. plus we got a text saying our order was ready. Where is it? Finally they went back there and checked again.. said the order was messed up they were working on it it'll be ready in 4 minutes. All together we waited almost 2 hours. Don't go there on a Saturday. I'm still frazzled about the whole incident. And to top it off it was only two tacos and Poke nachos. How hard is that to make. Don't go there on the weekend. Sure they compensated us a bit on the order still home and at night and still freaking frazzled. Don't get me started on PARKING ...nightmare. Sure it's amaZING food but my order was slapped together after 2 HOURS!!!!!!!!! read more

Went on a Sunday at 3pm. Long line but well worth the wait! Got a two piece fish and chips, and this was some of the best fried fish I've ever had. The fish is thick and super fresh with light almost tempura like batter. Fries were well seasoned and almost too plentiful. Great tartar sauce with lots of dill! Poke was not good, lots of fish but could have more sauce. Seating is kind of hit or miss but there's a lot of turnover and if you really can't wait it's a short walk to either the beach or the park. read more

Ordered fish and chip, crab sandwich, and fish taco. Overall not impressed with the food. Batter of the fish was way too thick, making the dish heavy and oily. The crab sandwich was tasty and definitely best of the three, but not special enough for revisit. And fish taco was average. Nothing about it made an impression. Saw the long line and the 5 star reviews so decided to give it a try. Food taste doesn't justify the price. read more

Wow, great random Yelp find! The fish was so fresh - literally saw a dude carrying a cooler of fresh fish into the building. Everything tasted fresh and the fish was expertly cooked. The Poke Burrito has Great layers of flavor but the tacos are where it's at in my opinion. The fish and avocado tacos - wow. And make sure you put some of their carrot habenero sauce on there. Awesome place - these guys know seafood and tacos for sure. Wish I was here longer I'd try their whole menu! read more

A cute place with cute outdoor seating. Great spot for a rare sunny day in the sunset. You can hang at the beach and come here for food after or before? I had the crab cake salad. Basic mixed greens but the crab was fresh and perfectly flavored and cooked. One of the best I've had. Portion is a bit small but guess crab is expensive these days. The poke on the other hand was quite underwhelming. I found it way too salty and lacking texture. Very mushy and not fresh tasting. I would stay away from it. read more

Really really like this place but I hope they will get things running a little more smoothly before summer. I was there on Presidents' Day so I imagine it was a bit busier than normal. When we walked in the guy said that it would be about a 30 minute wait. Then the text that I got immediately afterwards said 40 minutes. An hour and 10 minutes later we were texted that our table was ready. By then, we had already finished the lunch that we ordered to take out. If we had actually waited the hour and 10 minutes to be seated, then we would still have to get in line and wait for food, putting us at at least an hour and a half to two from arrival to ordering. And then, if, God forbid, we actually wanted some thing to drink, we would have to wait in yet another line to order that! Something just doesn't make sense with the ordering and waiting process. So we just ordered takeout and ate it on the ground outside in the sun. We still had a 40 minute wait for that but it sure beat waiting an hour and 10 minutes for a table and then having to wait in line to order food for which we would have to wait yet again. They need to simplify something here. Other than that the food was really good and the vibe is awesome and it's an overall terrific place. I had high hopes for Hook Fish in SF, especially after moving from Southern California and missing places like Bear Flag. Unfortunately, this spot didn't quite live up to the hype. The menu: fish tacos, burritos, and poke, but I was disappointed by the lack of ahi, which I was really looking forward to. I ordered the albacore burrito, expecting raw albacore, but it came with cooked fish instead. My mistake for not clarifying, but I expected more transparency given their focus on fresh fish. The freshness of the fish left much to be desired. For a place that claims to base their selection on fresh availability, the fish didn't seem up to par. On a positive note, the habanero sauce was a standout--drench your food in it for a burst of flavor. The poke was okay, but the absence of ahi or salmon was a letdown. The chips were great, earning a solid 9/10 from me, though the guacamole could use a bit more salt. I was really disappointed in the burrito; I've seen people rave about the fried fish n' chips, and it does look appealing, but, you can't really screw that up. I didn't find the experience memorable. Great spot for seafood! We had four adults in our party; Hook Fish Co. is a walk-up restaurant with outdoor seating only. The seating is quaint and the road was not busy so it was pleasant. Highly recommend the fish and chips, fish was flaky and light with crispy batter similar to what you would get in Ireland or England, the fries seemed to be double fried and have a great seasoning; malt vinegar is available and a perfect accompaniment to both fish and chips. Also recommend the shrimp ceviche was tasty and unique with salmon chunks and pineapple. Grilled fish tacos were flavorful with many ingredients that blended well together. Smoked fish salad was good but the other dishes we had were preferred. They have a good selection of beer and wine. Prices are reasonable for most of the dishes since they provide decent portions for the price, only exception was the fish tacos, but it's the catch of the day, so probably an acceptable price for fresh fish, which was delicious. read more

I ordered their fish burrito, and when it arrived, I couldn't believe how fresh everything tasted. The fish was perfectly cooked and flaky, and you could taste the ocean in every bite. My friend got a poke bowl, and the portions were huge - way more than you'd get at those trendy poke chains for twice the price. What made the experience special was the staff. The guy behind the counter was so enthusiastic about explaining their different fish options and helped me pick something I'd never tried before. You could tell he genuinely loved working there and believed in what they were doing. The location is perfect too - just a few blocks from Ocean Beach, so you can grab your food and walk down to eat by the water. The whole experience felt authentic and local, not like some tourist trap. I'm already planning my next visit to try their fish and chips, and I'll be bringing more friends. First time here. The food is GREAT!!!! Stopped at Hook Fish Co. For an early dinner in a Monday evening about 4 PM. It is a small shop. They do have a large parklet but no cover. You can't enter so the ordering and register is set up out front. I ordered the Cerviche with tortilla chips and the 2 pc Fish & chips. The cerviche was a mix of pieces of white fish, salmon, orange, shrimp, jalapeno and cilantro. You get a good amount. Super tasty. You have the choice of 2 or 3 pieces. I selected 2 and glad I did. The pieces aren't large but they are Thick and flavorful. After the cerviche it was more than enough. The fish batter was not heavy but the fish was so moist it lost it's crispiness after sitting while I ate the cerviche. Definitely, will be back for the cerviche. My friend and I visited Hook Fish on a Friday night, and it was bustling with activity! Fortunately, finding parking wasn't too difficult, although it's all street parking. The ordering process is straightforward--there's a small window inside where you place your order, and you pick it up outside when it's ready. Since the dining area is outdoors, we saw plenty of adorable dogs hanging around. Seating can be a bit challenging, as there aren't many tables available. We received our food before finding a table and ended up waiting around 20 minutes before snagging one. The wait was worth it--the fish and chips were delicious! The batter was incredibly light and crispy, and the fish was cooked to perfection. Overall, I'd definitely recommend giving this place a try! read more

Came by this great spot to pick up a picnic dinner to eat on Ocean Beach during this weekend's heat wave. If you're a fish lover like me, you will have a hard time choosing from this tasty menu. My wife and I decided to split a poke burrito and the smoked trout salad - zero regrets! The poke burrito had a balanced combo of poke with rice, beans, greens, and other delicious fixings. The smoked trout was also HQ, and was a nice light balance to the heavier burrito. It's only a 5 minute walk to enjoy your dinner on the beach bluffs. Hook Fish serves up some really solid seafood! I got the fish sandwich and fries, and both were delicious--fresh, crispy, and well-seasoned. The portion size was good, and the quality of the fish really stood out. The only downside is that they only offer outdoor seating. While it's nice on a good weather day, it might not be ideal if it's too hot, windy, or cold. Still, the food was worth it, and I'd definitely come back for another meal! read more
